Suntory Yamazaki Distillery Shimamoto Reviews
A highlight of our trip!
A must do while in Kyoto! Tickets sell out well in advance so plan ahead. Although we were unable to get tour tickets, we had a great experience in the museum and tasting room. Limited seating for those with mobility issues and a good distance from Kyoto but worth the trip!
Very bad experience
The internet page was telling that a tour you have to book 3 months in advance. But a tasting and look around in museum is possible. When I arrived after a 1 hour trip to get there the lady was telling me nothing is possible. Not a look around, not a tasting. When I show her the website she was just telling again nothing is possible! I am absolutely not happy about how I was treated at Yamazaki distillery. She was absolutely not helpful or at least any understanding about the situation!
Disappointing
The website needs a revamp. There are 5 factory tours per day and these are released 2 months in advance for booking. Once subscribed, they disappear as an option on the website, leaving museum tours only. So, not knowing this, we booked the museum tour, naively expecting a tour that included the factory. The museum isn't terribly impressive and certainly not worth a special trip. The gift shop doesn't sell full bottles of anything. The whisky offering is mostly gift packs of 180ml bottles with something else e.g. chocolates, a glass, the usual tourist tat. The tasting bar has a decent number of options, The one with 10ml of each of the regular, 12 year and 18 year costs Yen 1,600. No droppers available to add water. Overall, disappointing. I guess there's so much interest in the product at this moment, so they don't have to try too hard.
A Taste of Suntory
Want to taste Japanese whiskey? A taxi ride out of Kyoto brought us to Suntory Distillery and what a treat. So much to see in Kyoto but a change in temples brought us to whiskey tasting. When the taxi turned to the small streets, we saw the distillery nestled in the trees. A beautiful spot, helpful people and three generous taste of Suntory. Be sure to make a reservation early, they fill up fast. No tours were left for us so we opted for the tasting only slot and it worked well.
If you love Japanese Whisky, this is the place for you
Whilst unable to get the tour tickets which are done by lottery I was able to secure a tasting visit. The distillery is very easy to get to by train and an easy 10 minute walk. There is a small museum recounting the history of Suntory which is well done. Then onto the tasting. One is only able to purchase 3 tastings per person so choose wisely. The price was adequate for high end whiskies. There is ample space to stand around high top tables and enjoy the tastings in a leisurely manner. Unfortunately, there is not much to purchase. We did purchase a lovely Suntory tumbler and a very small bottle of one whisky that they were selling, otherwise it is just what is available to taste. My husband loved this side trip from Kyoto and it is well worth the hassle of trying for the tour in the lottery.
So worth the fight to get tickets & commute!!
We absolutely loved our visit! We unfortunately weren't able to win tickets through the lottery despite putting in for all possible dates but were able to snag the first come first served tickets that opened the month before. We got the 30 minute self guided tour and it was so well done! The museum part is well curated and had tons of interesting information and the tasting (while extra cost) was so worthwhile and affordable compared to trying these whiskeys elsewhere!
Fun Whiskey Experience for Kyoto Trip!
Wow, what a great experience tasting whiskeys at Suntory Yamazaki Distillery! We weren't able to book the full tour but we did get reservations to visit the small museum and tasting lounge. The staff was amazing and so friendly in providing suggestions and explaining the process. We were able to taste many very high-end whiskeys from Suntory at a very reasonable price. It's unfortunate that you can't buy any (I'm not sure if that will eventually change) but hey, just tasting them was a very cool experience.
