SumoMaya Scottsdale Reviews from The Last Year
Had dinner here with a bachelorette party.
..and we were not the only one! Service was great, they accommodated when we arrived early, and food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals but the noodles they say were a bit spicy. The crispy chicken mole was delicious and presentation beautiful, but the waitress recommended the rice, which I got, but didn't need. It was great on its own and with the plantains. Prices were a bit high but likely on par. Overall, a very pleasant experience.
The brunch is my fave spot in all of Scottsdale.
They provide good portions and drink special is very good

The service was great the food was okay good location was able to find parking. The drinks were okay my favorite was the spicy peach margarita
This is by far one of the best meals I have ever had.
To top it off the service we received was exceptional. I'm still dreaming of the Waygu carne asada, it was so flavorful and perfectly cooked.

Made a reservation for 8pm and we were told there were no table available when we arrived. They stated there were no time limits on tables so were unable to quote us an estimated wait time. Manager and hostess said there was nothing they could do but sit us outside in 113+degree weather with no misters on patio. Horrible service and unfriendly staff! Make a backup plan so your night isn't ruined!
I'll start out with the positives first.
The calamari was delicious as well as our korean beef tacos. The inside atmosphere was also quite mysterious but in a good way. However, the service was heavily lacking. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles and they were extremely heavy on the sauce and incredibly spicy. We also would have appreciated some disclosure on how spicy this dish could be. Our waiter never checked up on us after we got our food until we got our check. We wanted to let him know that we literally could not finish these noodles since they were upsetting our stomach but we never got the opportunity to since he did not come back. If you can handle spice get it but there were other things better on the menu.

SumoMaya excels in its fusion of Japanese and Mexican
SumoMaya excels in its fusion of Japanese and Mexican cuisines, offering a menu that is as diverse as it is delicious. Here are some highlights from my dining experience: Sushi Rolls: The sushi rolls at SumoMaya are a creative delight, blending fresh seafood with unique flavors and textures. The vegetarian sushi was also delicious! Tacos and Small Plates: The Mexican-inspired dishes are equally impressive, with tacos that burst with flavor and small plates that offer a variety of tastes. Don't miss the street corn, which is a flavorful twist on a classic favorite. Cocktails: The cocktail menu at SumoMaya is extensive and inventive, featuring expertly crafted drinks that perfectly complement the fusion cuisine. From margaritas with a Japanese twist to sake-infused cocktails, there's something to please every palate. *****

I was able to experience SumoMaya for the second time to celebrate a birthday! The opportunity to curate a unique menu for brunch that came out shareable style was an exciting way to explore the menu. The items came out in a flurry, almost too fast but I'm slightly a slow eater. Overall a great experience. The bottomless brunch is the icing on the cake.
Forrest was great.
He was attentive and pleasant to interact with. There was a miscommunication regarding some aspects of the event and he handled it courteously. However, after Forrest already corrected the issue, the manager, Cameron, came over, unprompted, and readdressed the issue without tact. The Food was great as always,
Average Sushi
Nothing exciting about this place Great selection of Sushi rolls which were average Food does not come out all together which they tell you but we're all eating while others are still waiting for food Salmon and Seafood paella was ok
I have been to this place twice.
The food was wonderful, tasty, and unique, Would Igo back, no no no. The reason was the music was eardrum LOUD.It destroyed a wonderful evening.
Love SumoMaya.
Brunch is a must do, but come hungry. Dinner has so many delicious options.

I was craving kimchi fried rice recently and lucky for me, Sumomaya had a great plate and it hit the spot. I also tried a classic roll and it did not disappoint. From what i saw while picking up my to go order, the ambience was nice and im looking forward to dining in soon. Service was quick and easy to order on phone

I ended up with food poisoning after eating at this restaurant on March 13, 2024. Our reservation was for four people and I chose the pan-seared salmon accompanied by rice and asparagus for my meal. Unfortunately, within ninety minutes, I found myself in a state of illness characterized by bouts of vomiting. I am certain that I had a foodborne illness from the salmon. No one else at our table got sick. Additionally, we had poor food service as the kitchen or the waitress failed to place an order for one of the meals. Although we were informed that it was on the way, it took way too much time to arrive, and the three of us had already finished our dinners when her food arrived. I sent an email to the restaurant but received no response. If someone had responded to my email, I would not have shared the bad experience online.
I would not go back

Really enjoyed the food and the service was really good.
We got some pomegranate guacamole and also had some rolls to share with the table. Parking is challenging so it's best to use the valet. I tried to park on my own initially, but couldn't tell if it was going to be ok or not so I went to valet. The only thing I didn't love is the Lagunitas IPA that they had on tap. I was looking forward to a really good IPA and was disappointed to learn that that's all they had. Not sure why they would have chosen that mass produced and not very tasty beer when there are so many great IPAs, including some local ones. but that was a minor thing. The only other thing I would say, is that the music was pretty loud and as the restaurant filled up and people were trying to talk over each other it got very loud as the night went on..
Everything was delicious!!! Can't wait to come back.
Best sushi roll I've had, perfect amount of spice. The service was awesome and vibe was too.
Travis was a great server.
Being from out of town we got the best recs and hospitality. We loved our food and drink. If ever back in Scottsdale we will be back (and asking for Travis)!
Great experience and great food.
Lively ambiance. Love the tree in the middle of the restaurant

I'll begin with saying that our server (BRENDAN) was outstanding and very nice. As to our meal last night, none of us plan a return. The type of dishes offered are very familiar to our group and the restaurants that we eat at, which are all located within 10 minutes of SumoMaya are priced similar. The sushi and sashimi and related specialties were all not of top notch quality and no one enjoyed any of these dishes. The tacos were leaded!!! The pad Thai was horrible and was sent back. The calamari was no where of the quality that we eat many times in other restaurants. It was not crispy, the portion size was a fraction of what is normally served and the quality of the fish itself was not high level. Almost every other dish we ordered other than the guacamole (excellent), was excessively highly spiced and almost inedible. The dessert was good but the tres leches cake was not great. All in all, the vibe in the restaurant with over the top loud pounding music was not a great addition to enjoying even this very pedestrian dinner. I think your chefs are out of their league! By the way, as to our music review, we are all big rock fans.

SumoMaya is a restaurant I love to bringing my out-of-state friends to, there's a very cool atmosphere, great service, and one of my favorite guac's in The Valley.
This restaurant was like an oasis of water in the dessert.
The dishes we got were great, and the star was definitely the paella. The mix of flavors had the right balance of richness, spice, and acidity and the seafood was all cooked to perfection without being overcooked. Additionally, the regular ceviche was a great way to start off the meal. Making your own tostada with the array of flavors was fun and engaging, and the flavors were a pure delight. We also got the carna asade, which was a pass - overcooked and relaitvely bland compared to the other dishes. Additionally the specialty cocktails were kinda actively bad. Some of the ratios of liquor to bitters is probably off. While there was a sorta weird vibe with the live DJ and the mix of being a club or restaurant, I think things still worked out in the end.
Confused menu
I find this place confusing. It seems they make a variety of cocktails and seem to do a significant portion of their business at the bar. That said the nonalcoholic menu is virtually nonexistent, despite the fact that they have the ingredients to make many things. As an Asian Mexican fusion restaurant, the menu can be categorized as interesting tacos, and sushi rolls, and while the food and atmosphere have a bit of chic appearance, and the staff are pleasant, it is pricey for what you get and I’m left wondering what I would come back for.

Came here on a girls weekend and wow, what a perfect vibe for cool moms ;-P We truly loved everything we ordered, including the chicken dish (most of us were all about the sushi), so I don't think you'll go wrong with anything that intrigues you.. our waitress was also extremely knowledgeable and helpful to navigate the menu / make suggestions. When it came to cocktails, I ordered a Pisco Sour which I can rarely find in most places... so that was a nice surprise. The overall vibe felt classy, unique (that tree!!), upscale, and modern.. enjoy!!

Hi @ExhaustiveMilk80, to be able to hold a bid you must have either the key holder medal or concierge medal. Holding bids allows you to work on trying to secure the reservation without someone else getting it before you and filling it
