ss Rotterdam Reviews from The Last Year
Top stay on this historic ship
Spacious suite Executive room on the perfectly preserved SS Rotterdam. We particularly enjoyed the historical tour included with this type of room. Buffet breakfast was tasty & plentiful. Friendly staff as well as a complimentary pick up from the nearby metro station.
Wonderful tourist in your own city
On April 9 we went to Danny Vera in New Luxor, and to make the memory even better we had dinner, overnight stay and breakfast on the SS Rotterdam. Upon arrival, we had to look for the reception, which we could not easily find. Nice spacious cabin, large bed, had to look for my partner haha, large TV, everything available, small downside, we are not the slimmest, so the toilet is a bit cramped, and the rack in the shower is in a place that is not a nice place for us. We walked around a bit before we went to the Lido Grill, where we received a very friendly welcome, a seat by the window, the food was very quick and delicious, after dessert and coffee it was time for the water taxi, where you can get on after booking the drill. Ideal. Upon returning to the boat we had another drink, a delicious handshake cocktail. Very extensive breakfast, something for everyone, good coffee, friendly service, in short, it was great
Exciting escaperoom
Escaperoom Metro was a true adventure. Very nice setup, wonderful guidance from Xavier and exciting puzzles. Time flew by and we managed to escape. Hints were given at perfect times and we didn't feel lost for too long. Totally recommended it!
Spend the night in heritage and listen to oral history
We can only review our room, which was a spacious outside cabin on the port side with great views of the skyline. It was fine, clean, with a good bed and quite a few historic interior elements. We enjoyed the atmosphere in this special hotel, which is also an important Rotterdam maritime heritage: both the ship and the interior, a real 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. The hotel staff and volunteers are friendly and hospitable. We really appreciated the detailed stories about the ship, shipping and the city. A fine example of 'oral history'! Be sure to book a tour, but the audio tour is also worthwhile. We did not do the escape rooms. From the ship you look out over the renovated Katendrecht, the Maashaven and the other side (North). The water taxi has a stop on the SS Rotterdam itself and that of the foot/bicycle ferry to Charloisse Hoofd (only during rush hour) is next to it. We skipped breakfast because we thought it was too pricey. We did enjoy a tasty, pleasant and reasonably priced dinner. If a huge cruise ship passes by during dinner (no matter how environmentally harmful it may be...) it is a special encore.
A special experience on the old cruise ship with charm. Nice rooms and good location with a view of the skyline.
We spent 3 nights on the SS Rotterdam. The ship is conveniently located on a quay near the city. There is a parking lot right in front of it (15 euros per day). There is also a free shuttle bus for guests to the nearest metro station and you can also get there quickly with the 77 bus. There are also 2 water taxi stops right next to the ship. It is a great experience to spend the night on the old cruise ship. The interior has retained the charm of the past well, everything was clean and in good condition. If you want to see more of the ship, you can book a guided tour for a fee. The breakfast buffet had a good selection and was of good quality. There are bars and 2 restaurants on board. We also had a good and delicious dinner at the Lido Grill. A table reservation is definitely advisable. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a very nice stay on the ship.
Easter weekend
The ship was beautiful inside and out, the food was good. The staff was very friendly. And the line railway had nice things for sale, only the sweaters were not in our size, there was a lot to do on the boat and there was a museum, the Easter breakfast was excellent.
Nice afternoon
For a birthday we had booked lunch followed by a tour. For lunch we had the sandwiches. Because the rolls are quite large, an average of two would be sufficient. Now there were quite a few left. The children ate a children's menu. Also quite a lot and there was a lot left over. Nice table for all of us. Service a bit distant. Then the tour with John and he had a lot to say. An hour is enough with children. In short, a nice afternoon.
Seen and approved
You have to be aware that you have booked a ship - and if it wasn't more expensive than other city hotels, you have booked an inside cabin. There are long corridors and everything is decorated in a maritime style - in the style of the 1950s, or rather the decorations are from much earlier eras. You have to like that. The ship is definitely worth taking the time for a guided tour (you can do it without an overnight stay). It's actually too bad to use it as a mere "flophouse" for a business trip. The room was spacious and well equipped. The water in the shower stayed evenly warm. The bathroom was a successful combination: a sink like in the 1950s, but a single-lever mixer and shower with an electronic mixer tap. I also thought the solution with the swiveling towel rails was a good idea. The vacuuming could be done more thoroughly and regularly (elevators). I would like to highlight the staff in the restaurant and bar. They were attentive without being intrusive and I felt seen as a no longer young solo traveler - unfortunately that is not a given.
Not anymore
We did not find the service friendly. Food was also really mediocre. Breakfast 25 euros per person. It was not worth it. Many bins were empty. Coffee was undrinkable. Couldn't make cappucino. Milk was gone. Toilet paper was like sandpaper. Everything as cheap as possible there.
Well worth a visit
We spent around 4 hours here today and really enjoyed the experience. We started with a tour of ‘below deck’ with Fred who has worked on the ship for 50 years! We then did an audio tour of the main parts of the ship ending with a short film of what it was like to travel on the ship back in the day. We then had drinks and snacks in one of the bars served by the lovely Judea who was friendly and very efficient. She recommended a few local snacks for us to try and they were excellent. It was a very pleasant visit and would highly recommend to anyone interested in ships and/or cruising.
I arrived a bit late in the day to take advantage of the
I arrived a bit late in the day to take advantage of the tour of the S S. Rotterdam, a nicely preserved Holland America cruise ship from the 1950's. I plan to return to Rotterdam next year and will take the full tour. This cruise line celebrates its 150th Anniversary this year as the world's oldest cruise line. They must be doing something right in The Netherlands to have the 150-year legacy of Holland America and the 104-year legacy of KLM, the world's oldest airline. But just to soak up the atmosphere of this era, and be thankful that this piece of important history was preserved is a great feeling. Although I didn't stay at the hotel onboard, I did enjoy a couple of the Espresso Martinis that were being featured. Tourism is grueling. Relax with a nice drink and just slow down.
After I boarded the ship for my10 day cruise, I sat down in
After I boarded the ship for my10 day cruise, I sat down in the main dining room and ordered a salad, chicken tacos, and a Campari spritzer. In my opinion, the food and the service was certainly lacking, so I never ate another meal in the Main Dining room for the rest of the cruise. After I left the main dining room I was still hungry, so I went up to the Lido Deck 9, where I found a station which had the absolutely best hand-made Mexican food, and had all the extras for either soft or hard shell tacos. In my opinion, the Lido should be your choice of venue for all meals, but especially for lunch. As for dinner, I was extremely happy I joined Club Orange (CO). I never waited at breakfast or dinner there, and the Maitre 'd, Edgar, was the best of the best, in managing this specialty restaurant. If you are like me, and hate second-hand smoke, then you will hate sailing on the Rotterdam. I thought that there was no smoking anywhere inside the ship, but I was wrong, because there was a portion of the casino that permitted smoking. There is a second pool at the back of the ship on deck 9, right outside the Lido dining room, but I would never go out there because of the smoking. One of the other issues I had was the entertainment. I went to see the dancers in the World Stage on the first evening, and for a major show in their only large room on this ship, in my opinion, it was mediocre at best, and would not be worth wasting your time. With regard to the entertainment, it seems the Rotterdam has really cut-back on its entertainment. I mentioned second hand smoke as a serious problem on this ship, but the other problem, which in my opinion I found to be just as horrible, and maybe worse, was the noise level, the Decibels (dB), at 2 of their music venues: The Rolling Stone Rock Room, and BB King's Blue's Club. All the shows playing at these two lounges were extremely loud with decibels that I measured on my Apple Watch at 97 and 98 decibels, and I was not even sitting down inside the venue near the music; I took the readings on the walkway connecting all the music venues. Speaking of loud noises, from my experience the noises from the slamming entry doors, and even the bed-shaking noises from the verandah doors slamming was a regular occurrence. In my opinion, the noise is really startling and very loud. Of the two, the worst is the verandah doors that open and swing outward onto the seating area, so when the ship is moving, the pressure variation between the stateroom and the outside is extreme, plus the wind from the moving ship, forces the balcony door to slam with such a force and intensity, that it literally shook my bed every evening when my neighbors went out onto their verandah. The ship sails every evening, so you can expect any neighbors who go out on their verandah's to have their doors slam closed. Also, the entry doors do not have a pump-type device on the back of the door to control the closing of the entry door, which therefore caused the neighbor's doors to slam every-time they leave or enter their stateroom. If you like the taste of aluminum in your water, you will love the Rotterdam. The company, has switched-over to everything aluminum when it comes to canned-water, at least that is what I believed until my last day onboard. Prior to that time, if I ordered water, I got a very small aluminum can with water, and because I paid for the special drink package, I was able to get these cans without any additional charge. I was very disappointed when I discovered on my last evening onboard that one of the dueling piano entertainers was drinking from a regular plastic bottle of water. I asked him where he got that water bottle, and was told it is provided to the entertainers. It took me 4 days after I returned home to get the aluminum taste out of my mouth, and that was an experience I will never forget. I know one thing for sure, that I got horribly sick from food that was either not cleaned properly and/or served raw at one of the dining venues on the Rotterdam. I was so sick with serious diarrhea, both day AND night, and vomiting one night, that I could not leave the ship for many days. Because my symptoms were so horrible and debilitating, I was planning on possibly having to rent a hotel room upon arrival in Ft. Lauderdale, so I could get better before I tried to safely travel home without having an "accident." Fortunately, the medicine the doctor prescribed for me worked. Let me be clear that I had the worst "stay-near-my-stateroom-experience" for a number of days AND nights, and no amount of monetary credit, the few hundred dollar future cruise credit, can repay me for what I endured. Based on my experiences, I would never recommend anyone I know to sail on the Rotterdam, or any of the other Pinnacle Class ships, based on my personal experiences on the Rotterdam. Fortunately, there are many other well-run cruise lines to choose from.

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
