Amazing Japanese dining experience!
After a few meals ordering from vending machines we were keen to try a more intimate dining experience in Japan. We stumbled across Masa’s after the restaurant we were going to try was closed. Well it had to be fate! We are so glad that restaurant was closed so we got to try Masa’s. The whole experience from the moment we walked in the door was incredible. The service from Miho was amazing, she offered us blankets on arrival and was very attentive to all of our queries. It didn’t take long for us to strike up a conversation as we were keen to learn a bit more about living in Japan. Was cool to learn that Miho and Masa lived in Melbourne and Sydney for a number of year and that Masa worked at Tetsuya in Sydney, which is one of the top restaurants in Australia.
The food was delicious. We ordered the tempura Sushi, Herring Soba and leek and bean curd Soba. It was very flavoursome and perfect on a cold winter night, as was the buckwheat tea served with dinner.
All in all a great Japanese dining experience. Can’t recommend highly enough!
Great food, fantastic experience
Went there on our first night in Osaka after reading about it in the Michelin Guide (1-star restaurant). Small place, less than 10 tables. Very simple and very clean. The ambiance is quiet and cozy, no photography or talking on cell phones allowed.
The friendly staff was quick to offer us an English menu and spoke basic English to explain the various items on the menu, and especially how to eat each item for gaijins like us.
On to the food: Absolutely delicious! We were first given a plate of cold fresh peanuts to munch on, very refreshing. The menu itself has several choices of handmade cold and hot Soba, as well as various a-la-carte items such as Tempura, tofu and other things I'm forgetting. We got the cold white and black Soba which were both amazing. The mixed Tempura was also very good, light, fresh and tasty. Total bill for two, including a beer was 4000yen which is very reasonable for the quality. You can get away with under 1500yen per person.
Highly recommended for the food, and equally so for the service and kindness of the staff who laughed with us when we were clearly uneducated on the Soba eating process. And to add, the highest vote of confidence came from the Japanese lady eating next to us, who vouched for the quality of the Soba as being superior to most other places.
Would definitely return.
Michelin-starred restaurant in Osaka
The restaurant had a nice environment - no phones were allowed so people were eating and chatting with each other. The food was great. You can see the kitchen from the dining area. Food was prepared fresh. Overall a nice experience.

We heard about this place whilst in Australia watching a Japanese cooking show. It opened at 6:00pm on Friday and was full by 6:10 (with us being the last table!). This restaurant seats 20 people max and this would likely be the nights service.
The waitstaff spoke great English (as her and the Chef apparently lived in Australia for 5+ years) and was lovely and helpful for us first timers. Whilst there was an English menu available, we selected several 'starters' that we saw other patrons dining on. These included miniature shrimp on ryokan radish, squid mouth balls (translated!), and whole dried sardines (and yes you eat them whole!). We then had cold black and white soba with tempura. The soba dipping sauce was divine and flavoursome and the tempura perfectly crisp and fresh.
We are no soba experts, but if you are going to eat cold soba- this stuff was awesome and the overall experience even better. Remember to SLURP your noodles. It is polite!
Wonderful evening topped with warm sake and wonderful local company.
The best soba
We were there following the recommendations from a tv show, and it it was really better than we spected, the best cold soba I have ever tried
