Smalhans is good! Real food and real wines
The food is absolutely fantastic. They run exciting combinations with fantastic ingredients. They have brought in chefs who can cook good food. Good natural wines are also available here.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming
Pretty unimpressive dining experience here. The service is not impressive. No one explains the concept to us, or how the relatively unknown Sami dish should be eaten, no one asks how it tastes or if we have what is needed. - And we don't have that! The bowl of onions and cabbage is far too small for six people. We don't see anything to the mayo topping and thus the dish doesn't quite come together. The bread, which is the main component, is not cooked through and the breadcrumbs are rather ordinary. consequently the food doesn't impress us either. the coffee we ordered for dessert is empty as the latter arrives some ten minutes later. The spice cake is very ordinary and, in addition, in the driest layer. Foam and quince jam taste nice and little and thus put a full stop with a resounding "yes" around our table. With so little enthusiasm from here, the place is off the list of visits to be repeated.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Inattentive and service-oriented service and a long wait for the food (which was relatively tasteless). Generous wine glasses. All in all a disappointing experience. Not Michelin Bib Gourmand worthy!
Be the first to ReplyGood choice
A place that deserves its Michelin mention in its own right. A gem for the quality of the cuisine and choice of products. A little out of the center, but worth a visit. The crispy cod and the herbed carrot are excellent

We were a group of four, who chose the Smalhansmenyen, with accompanying wine package. There were six courses, served as five. We started with turnips with mussels and a shellfish sauce. Well. Then came long ones with peas, pea sauce and pea shoots. Very good. Right three was a variation on onions and nuts. Fantastic! Then came pigwings with gratin beans in gruyere. The pigwings were very tender, but were under seasoned, so here we had to ask for salt and pepper. I could eat the beans au gratin every other day. They were indescribably good. For dessert there was an apple variety with cake, compote, sorbet and fresh apples. Absolutely good. The wine package contained two generous glasses of white and red, as well as ice cubes for dessert. It was sour, bordering on sour, but it worked. Pleasant premises and waiters made this a very pleasant experience.
Be the first to ReplyFood is good, but...
We had reserved a table for 4 people at Smalhans on September 18th, 2023. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. When we greeted us, the waiter asked us which menu we would choose and pointed out that we all had to choose the same one. Basically, the food was very good and we agreed on it. A chef was also nice and gave us a quick update on the “Bycatch”. However, we didn’t find some things so good for a restaurant with a Michelin entry: • The individual courses are served on a small plate (small portion for 4) You then have to divide them up among yourselves. The main course too. This is not so easy with some dishes and doesn’t look so nice. However, the restaurant kitchen only has to prepare one plate = savings • Clearing away empty dishes didn’t work, we had to ask for it twice because there was no room on the table and the staff were chatting behind the counter. • The second course was again served on a small plate in the middle, now our used plates from the first course were still there and we had to ask for new plates here too. (different dishes!) • Nobody was unfriendly, but nobody was interested either... That's not enough for a restaurant of this class and can be improved. Best Regards Stefan

Fantastically good food, good service and guidance on wine to go with the food. It was a proper culinary experience without us being overly hungry. Good ingredients and high-level cooking topped off with good wines. Have been here several times and it is delivered at a consistently high level!
Be the first to ReplyNot Worth the Wait
So SmallHans is a fine dining experience. The food was good, the service was good, the atmosphere good. There was a fixed menu of either 6 or 9 courses. We chose the 6 course menu and we were there for THREE hours. Way too long. Yes I understand we were in Europe and sometimes service is slower; and I am all for that, but at one point we waited for 30 to 45 minutes for the next course to come. The food was just not worth that kind of wait , so that is why my rating is 3 stars and not 5.
Be the first to ReplyGood food at a fair price
Famously the only Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient in a city known to be quite expensive Smalhans resides in the St. Hanshaugen neighborhood and focuses on a shared menu featuring local farms that changes daily. Opened in 2012 and defined as "scarce way of life" it is through nose-to-tail cooking that Smalhans offers three different ways to dine daily in addition to a collection of natural wines, though the Smalhans Menu for NOK 675 seems most popular. Casual and convivial, the kitchen is currently run by Mads Ekrheim who isn't afraid to let less prized ingredients steal the spotlight while service is pleasant and educated. Fast paced compared to other Norwegian eateries, a 5-course menu lasting just 75 minutes, it was with Smalhans’ own White Wine that Turnips started the meal with a complex Sauce of Mussels perfumed by Chervil. Focused on sustainability, bycatch Whiting as tender as larger specimens with Parsley and Peas, Ekrheim’s best dish this evening came as Caramelized Onions and Leeks lent texture by Hazelnuts. Serving the last savory in two-parts, Beans with a bit of tooth covered in Cheese adjacent meaty “Pig’s Wings,” Dessert took four Ingredients and combined them in a bowl allowing each to shine on its own while also complimenting the others.

We loved it. Great service, original cuisine with a balanced menu and good value for money in Norway. We especially liked the fish of the day and the caramelized onions!
Be the first to ReplyIt’s ok but tooooo slow
The dishes are mediocre but not a wow experience. Meanwhile if you don’t have good patience please don’t choose here, an 8 course dinner will take you at least 3 more hours, too slow really unbelievable. Not sure if that’s Nordic pace of life…
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, mediocre staff and ambiance.
Place was full and buzzing when we arrived at the restaurant. We were welcomed at the bar and were ushered to our small table by the head waiter. We quickly ordered the 6 course meal and went for two mediumpriced bottles of wine. Every single course was amazing. The structures, taste and presentation of the food on the plate were really good. Now for the negatives. Our waiter, although pleasant enough, could neither speak norwegian nor english very well. This is a problem when introducing the dishes and we were left with a feeling of too much "lost in translation". Several of the dishes crossed each other and this is simply not good enough. Let the guests finish a course before cramming in another on the table. Lastly but most annoyingly was the music that was played. I honestly was not expecting such a cheesy soundtrack to accompany my meal. This involved 90's teenage dancehits playing at far too high volume, notably "Barbie Girl", Cotton Eyed Joe" and "Mr.Vain" etc. The staff seemed to enjoy the music immensely, dancing and singing along to the words as they were, the guests however I seriously doubt. I understand the staffs need to unwind at the end of a busy night, however I recommend that music being played after the doors close.
Be the first to ReplyNo place in any Michelin guide
This restaurant has no place in any Michelin guide. This is a flawed and mismanaged restaurant. We spent a long weekend in Oslo, and this was supposed to be our one nice dinner out. We were concerned about the bad reviews, but decided to give it a try anyway. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, and there seemed to be a private party in a back room, as well. We waited at the bar for our table, which was fine. The bartender/manager (role unclear, though authoritative) jovially offered cava to everyone waiting, so we felt like this would be a fun evening. We were seated at a tiny 2-top that felt like it was in the middle of a traveled way, and the waitstaff kept bustling around us. Little did we know this would turn out to be a long, hungry dinner. We sat for over 35 minutes before getting our first course. It was a small, but tasty fish. It was very hard to share with 2 people, and ended up being about 3 bites each. Another 20ish minutes passed and we were presented with a scallop dish. 1 scallop per diner. They were good but on a bed of inedibly salty daikon/cucumber salad. But, it was hard to tell because it was so salty. 20 minutes later we had a grilled celeriac course, which was fine at best. Then the “entrecôte,” which, let’s be real, was prime rib. And it was cold. My husband took a photo of me touching it with my knuckle, testing the temperature. It was cold. But we’d been there nearly 2 hours and we were starving, so we said nothing and ate the cold steak. The dessert was pretty good, but by that time I just wanted to eat the ice cream and run away. The service was not good. At one point my husband got up to use the loo (behind a door that was very hard to open), and observed a full restaurant where no one was eating. When there was service, it was uneven. A waiter served the table next to us by reaching directly over/in front of me. (That table also ordered wine and it was a bit of a thing for them to finally get it) There also seemed to be some sort of internal drama among the waitstaff. I don’t care what it was but it made the place seem unnecessarily tense at times. So, I wish this was better. It just wasn’t.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing
Went to Smalhans after some tips from friends but I got very disappointed with the experience overall on a Bib Gourmand restaurant. We were greeted by a waitress that looked annoyed for some reason. She wasn't very friendly and this went on throughout the meal. We booked the 5 meal course but the descriptions of the food were so nice that we asked if we could have the bigger menu, which she agreed. But when the food came it was the first dish from the smaller menu. We decided not to say nothing so not to mess with the pace of the kitchen. The first dish was pollock with beef consome that lacked salt on it. The fish could be less cooked and the consome didn't have flavor. Next a braised scallop with a daikon and cucumber salad. Again, the protein needed more salt and the salad was bland being seasoned with some oil although It was told was it had a vinagraitte. After this, celery root on a foamy sauce with hazelnut. Celery root was overcooked and lacked salt. Then the meat. Very nice piece of grilled meat with a very good jus. It's a shame we weren't served bread because id' love to eat the rest of it. The garnish was some blanched young carrots but they lacked salt and a creamy potato puré with cheese - too bad the cheese was probably some mild cow cheese from Tine. Since the sharing portions were kind of small, we asked the cheese plate and this stepped on the realm of ridicule for a 2250kr meal: We had 2 pieces of a hard cheese form Norway and a Camembert/brie style one and on the side 4 slices of toast from supermarket bread, 2 thin slices of nut/fruit bread that were cut from the ends of the same bread - I mean, like leftover tips of bread - and a bowl of kumquats that the waitress mistaken for orange tomatoes. The dessert was monkey bread with caramelized white chocolate ice cream which was alright. I was kind of disappointed by the experience not only by the food but also the service in a restaurant that wasn't even full.
Be the first to ReplyDon't go to Smalhans
We were super excited as it's mentioned by micheline guide and we had read good reviews - but WOW! We were so disappointed.. The service was horrible, they served us and our neighbours wrong stuff (multiple times). We also hade to ask for the wine and they never served it with the food, we had to ask after we got the food. It was also only nature wines in the wine package that did not go well with the food. When I asked for the dessert wine after the ice cream had already melted she said "I don't know what wine is for dessert" - even though we hade the wine package?? like what?? The place is expensive and the food, wine and service does not match it what so ever. My only advice is: DON'T go to Smalhans.
Be the first to ReplyNice place, but up to Michelin standards?
We took the bigger 9 course meny. We had expectations for good food because of the Michelin status. The 9 course meny was more like 7 course meny. I don't think boiled potatoes or couple of sliced salami would count as one course. Many of the courses were pretty simple and didn't offer any special taste experiences. Nevertheless the food tasted good. Especially we liked the grilled duck heart. Only bigger disappointment was the butcher's beef and potatoes which were one of the main courses. Meat was tender, but it didn't offer any special flavors. This dish was something we would eat on a normal weekday, not in a better restaurant. The staff was very polite but the waiter changed all the time which caused a little confusion. Also the tables were too close to each other and because of that the waiters had hard time moving around. Overall we liked the atmosphere. Couple of the courses were really good, but some were below the standards we expected.
Be the first to ReplyVery creative new nordic food
Great local charcuterie; very fresh scallops, good local cheeses; fascinating chicken with morels, cabbage, and pistachios. Lovely, helpful staff; very knowledgeable about these good creations. Nice walk down hill from dinner to hotel.
Be the first to ReplyLow key and for foodies.
This is a cosy, neighborhood restaurant providing 6 or 8 course set menus of local produce that is interestingly prepared.

We discovered this amazingly nice restaurant on our way to North Pole. The food is good without any doubts. The service is super nice and they even stay open on Sunday lunch!! I tried local beer, one is IPA with the smell of mango, another one is white light beer. Both are very nice. The one with the smell of mango seems more attractive to girls, but it’s actually stronger and more sour. From the taste, I’ll recommend the white light beer to girls. I also had a glass of red wine from Piemonte to match with the bœuf. It’s quite light and fruity and didn’t get covered by strong sauce of meat. The most surprising part is the wine glass itself. Usually a normal restaurant will not buy wine glasses with such good quality. I assume the owner of the restaurant loves wine very much too. The owner not only told us the food tradition in Norway and nicely gave us a lot of suggestions for visiting Oslo. A very attractive point is that just one minute by walking from this restaurant, there’s a city park on the left. After enjoying this great lunch, you can have a nice nap on the grass under sunshine without worrying to be robbed🤣🤣 I noticed that it’s 4/5 on this webpage of TripAdvisor and ranked 105 in Oslo. This is very unfair for such a well prepared restaurant. I know it’s really hard and huge work for people who run restaurants especially after the pandemics. They survived with all efforts and they deserve all your supports. Please be kind and do not hesitate to write down something and give them 5/5 if you also had nice moments in this lovely place.
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant in town
We tried some restaurants in Oslo. This one is definitely our favorite one. The food is amazing, a real research in flavors. The staff is so nice. The atmosphere is also very casual. We spent a very good moment there. There is a park 3min by walk from it, so you can enjoy a peaceful nap after a wonderful lunch. Hope we will have the opportunity to come back one day.
Be the first to ReplyNice food, service could be improved
Visited on holiday from London - dishes are very good and filling (although we were expecting something a little more adventurous). Unfortunately the let down for me was the staff - one of the staff members had a large group of friends standing in the restaurant. As a result the staff were distracted and it was hard to get their attention. In particular, when the main course came while my boyfriend was in the bathroom, I asked the staff member to come back to explain the dish. Unfortunately, she forgot. To pay, we were dropped over the card machine and left to fend for ourselves - not even a goodbye or thank you as we left as the staff were on their phones. Ruined the experience for me unfortunately, but think we might have been unlucky.

Authentic norwegian food. It was me and my husbands’ firstime hear and we had the meny of the day and it was so flavorful that the meat is melting in your mouth. Nice staff very friendly ang accomodating. We will definitely be back.

Overpriced and overrated - the service is ok at best, usually very slow. Go someplace else, this will probably let you down.
Be the first to ReplyVery very good food! But..
We finally decided to eat at Smalhans that we have heard so many positive things about. Table was booked a few weeks before-hand.
+ We had the Krøsus menu and loved everything that was served!
+ The waiters who served the food always explained what was in the dishes
+ Atmosphere was cozy, but..
+- They didnt have the Smalhans red wine.
- ...when we arrived it felt like the music belonged to a night club?
- Waiters wasnt really attentive.. we had to wait for a long time before we were asked to get new drinks (beer/wine)
- We even had to ask to get our check when we wanted to pay. Waited for at least 15 minutes then gave up waiting, so we kind of felt a bit neglected by the service.
Overall, the food saved it, along with the waiters who served the food.
I think its cool and all that Smalhans is mentioned in the Michelin guide, but honestly.. dont try and live of that and treat your customers with more care.
Great food and service in the chambre séparée
We were 9 people out for an evening in the chambre séparée ("Leiligheten"). This is a cozy, separate room suitable for 8-14 people, I'd say.
We had the room the entire evening - I think the normal (non-pandemic) deal is two sessions per evening.
There's no extra cost for the chambre séparée, however there's a minimum number of guests, and they all have to order the Krøsus 7-course menu.
All guests agreed that food was very good. Sevice was also very good - with good knowledge of the courses as well as the beer/wine menu. A couple of the courses could maybe have been slightly warmer - but they were just fine.
There's a TV with AppleTV connection and a record-player/turntable at your disposal.
No big deal - but they should provide some device for playing your Spotify lists, or to connect your bluetooth device - most people don't carry a case of their favorite LP records around. However, you can always listen to the music played in the restarant, or bring your own portable speaker as we did.
All in all - great food, great service and happy guests.
