We had previously been big fans of this restaurant and we used to go almost every time we visited Tokyo. So I was rather looking forward to our last visit - dinner for our last evening in the city. Those of you who've eaten here probably know that there is a 5-day cancellation policy on the reservation. Unfortunately, a strong typhoon that was meant to hit Taiwan swerved unexpectedly to Japan and by that afternoon, we had received information that most restaurants, shops, malls, spas, etc will be closed starting from 5pm that day.
Once we heard the news, we called the restaurant at least 5-6 times starting from 5pm (when they supposedly open), as well as reached out to our Amex concierge to determine if they would still operate that evening. None of our phone calls were answered. Knowing that the subway and all public transportation were suspended that evening and not being able to confirm if the restaurant was open, we decided to eat at a neighborhood restaurant nearby that was still open.
A few days after we got home, we were notified by Amex that we were a "no-show" for dinner that evening and were charged for the full amount of the dinner. This was absolutely ridiculous, as we would have gone if we had KNOWN the restaurant was open. Given that we are foreigners and were not able to fully comprehend any of the public information available about the storm, it was unbelievable that they expected us to take the risk of showing up at the restaurant when they DID NOT answer our calls in the first place.
DON'T let this happen to you - we'd highly recommend visiting another outstanding tempura restaurant in this city who is more respectful of your rights as a consumer.
