Little gem of restaurant that rivals the michelin big names in its own way
among NYC Japanese restaurants, Masa is absolutely the best: extremely creative and delicious starters, fresh and fancy variety of fish. Nobu is a huge commercial success with its well crafted and extensive fusion style menu. This little gem of restaurant by Chef Yokota deserves equal recognition as those michelin starred, world renowned establishments. This is the only place I know of in the New York area that makes tempura the center piece of the menu. The starters are delicious. On one of my visits the smoked eel on top of the soba noodle was by far the best eel I v had. I did not know one could prepare eel that way. A well thought out assortment of seasonal sea foods and vegetables is prepared in from of the 6 guests. u watch the chef peel the shrimps, dip in the batter and toss into the pot. even though each main course is deep fried, it does not feel greasy at all thanks to the fresh oil for each seating and the well balanced alternation between sea food and vege. When the chef is laser focus on the boiling pot of hot oil in front of him, The waiter/manager keeps the guests entertained. With each course, he explains the dish and recommend the seasoning (salt or sauce ...). The presentation is very delightful. We can't understand his heavy Japanese accent 100% of the time but that only adds a very light atmosphere to the experience. not every day your food is served with an iphone showing a picture of a fish. He then go around the counter to load and unload the dish washer, come back to pour water and drink. Does so much work with a huge smile on his face all the time. We also had the great pleasure to meet the chef's wife who came in to help over the weekends when she does not have to go to her corporation job. The work ethics of this family and the manager is inspirational.

I probably had one of my favorite meals in the city at Secchu Yokota. It blew me away. This place is a two-man team: one chef and one server. As such, the meal does take a while to finish. However, watching the chef do his thing and expertly craft the omakase with such attention to detail is riveting. The server is funny, entertaining, and helpful. Each course, each tempura, was amazing!
Be the first to ReplyAmazingly delicious tempura!
We planned to visit Secchu Yokota but it was super difficult to make a reservation. We were excited to hear that pickup is currently available and couldn’t wait to try.
The options were limited on the menu but we still had a hard time making our decisions. We ordered via phone and assigned a pick up time. We were there on time, the staff was friendly, attentive and served everything quickly.
We had their Tempura Tendon Set and Tempura Chasoba Set with reasonable $39 and great portion. The food was totally worth the price and amazingly delicious especially the tempura.
The tempura was fried properly and well flavored. Our favorite was the shrimp tempura and the eggplant tempura. The rice was decent and the chasoba was light & refreshing.
Overall, it was one of the best experiences we have ever had for Japanese bento boxes. We will definitely visit again for their other options.
Excellent Japanese food, great hospitality
This was the second time I've been here and the food and service was as I remembered. Each course is carefully prepared and served. The ingredients are so fresh. No wonder this place has earned 5 stars all the way. There are only 8 seats so each customer gets their full attention. You will leave completely full and satisfied!
Be the first to ReplyAmazingly Oishii (Delicious)!
This review is long time coming. I've had the pleasure of going to Secchu Yokota twice and the dishes and service were amazing both times.
As a Japanese, you think we'd be used to delicate tastes and impeccable presentation but this place was beyond our expectations.
Everything is fresh, cooked right in front of you and seriously "oishii (delicious)!" That's really the only way I can describe it.
Oh! They have a great selection of sake too.
The tempura is very delicate and comes with a selection of condiments. Just thinking of it makes me want to go there again...
The service is impeccable. Attentive but not intrusive, and professional all the way.
There are 2 seatings per evening (6pm and 8:30pm) and the restaurant is cozy with 8 seats so reservation is a must.
I highly recommend this restaurant!
The best tempura you may ever eat
Chefs Atsushi Yokota and Nicholas Seider prepare and serve a dazzling tasing menu of tempura fish and tempura vegetables punctuated by sushi dishes and a final entree of beef or duck. Homemade desserts are usually a combination of cake or pudding plus an esoteric ice cream, sorbet or custard. They adjust the menu easily for people with dietary restrictions or kosher style. It’s really an amazing place! I usually try to eat there 1-2 times per month.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Tempura Omakase - New Standard for NYC
Yokota San is a true tempura master. This meal is as close as it gets to an authentic tempura omakase in Tokyo. There is some western influence in the starters (some salads, and beautiful soups) but of course the tempura is the main event. Batter is light and crispy, and never overpowers the underlying food. Scallops and baby chicken are personal favorites. The soba noodles to close are divine, so refreshing and smooth. Great value as well and fantastic service. A+ all around.

This restaurant seats only 8 and there are only 2 seatings each night so book early. This is unlike any other Japanese restaurant in NYC and perhaps in the whole country. You start with a mushroom "soup" that was beyond wonderful, followed by several plates of sashimi, followed by a seemingly endless servings of tempura. We had fried sweet potatoes. okra, mushrooms, and at least a dozen types of fish, eel, crab, etc. The presentations are works of art. It was a meal I'll never forget.
