So I like this place.
Friendly staff. Chill old school vibe. Even their COVID based sushi bar setup is pretty (ya there's plexiglass between you and the chef but the overall feel is open while he slides your nigiri through the uncut of the shield). I think my issue was probably my time of year (late November). There were three mackerel like things: Gizzard Shard, Pacific Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel. Now I don't mind it (I actually like aji)...but it was a bit too much. One other fish (I forget which one) was a bit ice water cold...that was odd. But that uni handroll was near perfection at the end of the course so that helped a bit: the Edo style sushi here adds a lot to enjoy. The chef telling the diners next to us "you need to eat the sushi once I put it down, don't let it sit out" was priceless. I'd come back probably in the spring and see the fish selection...assuming the trade hasn't gone the way of the chip shortage by then.

While the quality of the food here was excellent, our dinner was so pricy (about $250 total for dinner for two) and yet we were very hungry afterwards. I made reservations a few week in advance on Open Table. The service was very professional.During COVID (July 2021) there was no bar seating, and they had built temporary walls between each table. The tables were temporary patio furniture. As a result, there was not much ambiance. Please see my photos for detailed reviews of our food!

I felt that I was transported out of SF and into Tokyo.

A very straightforward, no frills omakase at the very affordable price of $85. Kamoizumi (Hiroshima) - Nigori, unfiltered sake | $15/glass I am a huge fan of unfiltered sake and really loved this! The sweetness and creaminess were just right. I wish we were able to sit at the bar for the full experience, but understandably, due to COVID, it's still table only seating. Our server was super nice and friendly, explaining each selection as it came to us, which was helpful since there were multiple pieces served at once instead of individually. There were 3 types of sea bream which I thought was interesting as I don't usually eat much of it, and all were very tasty as expected. There are add-ons like the o-toro, scallop, and uni which are a bit pricey and ended up bumping us up to about the price range of other omakase spots. In addition to the Tamago at the end, the Fuji apple soaked in Yuzu juice was a super delicious way to finish the meal.

This was my first omakase experience and it did not disappoint! Sad to say we were secluded to our separated tables rather than the typical set up around the chef, but I appreciate them taking measures to take COVID precautions seriously.Top notch service with knowledgeable servers, first of all. I honestly didn't think price point was bad either. I'm no sushi expert by any means, but still appreciated the quality of the fish. And having a set menu with variety delivered to you is quite delightful, as it allows you to try things that you otherwise wouldn't have known or have been daring enough to try.Recommend with two thumbs up.
Be the first to ReplyExquisite sushi omakase at Sasaki last week.
The otoro sushi was melt in your mouth, and the Hokkaido uni hand roll was just utterly luscious, and I added on a serving of fresh Baja uni sushi too, along with octopus and scallops.

3.5 starsDue to COVID, they only offer a cheaper and shorter version of the original omakase (9 nigiri, 1 hand roll and tamago). A small piece of eggplant was the only one appetizer. Then followed through the course and ended with Fuji apple with a glaze of yuzu juice. We also ordered more uni from Baja. The food was pretty ordinary. I feel like it's the price ($85) that attracts people cuz you get to try different types of fish under a low cost.

My fiancé and I have been to almost every omakase spot in SF and Sasaki is still our favorite by far!! Very authentic omakase experience, memorable menu and remarkable quality!!! We cannot wait to go back for indoor dining.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing edomae sushi that's really all I can say.
sasaki sans sushi rice was so flavorful and perfectly sour. I will say I think his Saba is the best around and I'm really serious about my Saba nigiri. Other highlights were hotate, sawara, and kanpachi. Actually everything served was a highlight to keep in short I will just say that. Tamago was served at the end and paired with the sweetest Fuji apple soaked in yuzu. Somehow the chef managed to turn Anago into a delicious dessert item at the end as well, this really through me for a loop and it's something to remember.I can't wait to come back and dine inside when the chef is ready for us.ありがとうございました
Be the first to ReplyNOTE: Sasaki reopened their outdoor dining in Feb 2021.
That's when I visited them. Covid protocol: staff wear masks and gloves. All guests are required to wear masks. They provide hand sanitizers. Food: Omakese is $80 per person that contains Amuse(we got a bite size piece of pumpkin), Chef's choice nine pieces of Nigiri with one Temaki(hand rolled sushi cone) and Tamago(Japanese omelette). We ordered an additional Toro nigiri (fatty tuna) that cost $14 per piece. All fish was fresh and melted in the mouth. Ambience: there isn't any to be honest. You are out on the street just watching the vehicles go by. Hope the indoor dining opens soon. Service: the servers were polite and explained what each dish was when they served it.
