Overall great experience, love every single piece in the
Overall great experience, love every single piece in the omakase. The toppings and seasoning for each piece keep surprise me, truffle oil scallop, yuzu ikura, truffle foie gras salmon . The rice is a bit too soft almost fall apart when piece up by hand, a simple dessert like ice-cream would be a nicer ending. Really a steal for $78, will come back when I visit NYC in the future.

I went to Sanyuu West for bento box sushi and it was phenomenal. Everything was fresh and beautifully packaged. I loved every single piece and it was good on the go. I definitely would order again. I hated that I had to wait till 5 to order but it definitely convenient.
Be the first to ReplySanyuu West is an omakase sushi bar only restaurant
Sanyuu West is an omakase sushi bar only restaurant offering unparalleled quality and value for its price point. The omakase offered is a 15 piece set for an astonishing $78 during my visit (12/2023). The omakase from Sanyuu West would be a great gateway for the unadventurous eater as the relatively low price point and quality fish offered are elevated in flavor but close in texture and taste to what you would see at a typical sushi restaurant. My favorite dish from my omakase experience was the toro hand roll and the botan ebi ( sweet shrimp). While this omakase experience was not the most engaging experience with the chef, his expertise in crafting quality nigiri at a reasonable price triumphs all. One thing to note is that they were also able to accommodate several dietary restrictions for other guests during my visit (kosher and no beef) so make sure to inform them if you need adjustments ahead of time. I would highly recommend Sanyuu West if you're looking for a quality and affordable omakase experience in the West Village/Chealsea area.

My first omakase experience, it was such a great experience, Im not sure what's in each of the courses but for someone who doesn't experiment a lot with seafood, I truly enjoyed and had a great time!!!
Be the first to ReplyCute omakase spot that was very intimate.
Great experience as a couple! $78 pp for 15 course meal. Dungeon crab - refreshing appetizer Hamachi with chive- my favorite so flavorful Seabream Tuna with chive and daikon radish Medium fatty tuna with crunchy garlic- delicious O-toro fatty tuna with caviar- yummy Botan Ebola sweet shrimp- good but very wasabi flavor Hotate scallop with lemon juice and truffle sauce- VERY wasabi flavor Salmon roe- meh, quite salty Amberjack fresh ginger and chives- yummy Uni- yummy like butter Salmon with foie gras- delicious Unagi- good and standard. Large piece of eel Wagyu- good Toro hand roll- great taste and ending to the meal! Staff was extremely friendly and we were full at the end! Was definitely a great experience here. We ordered 4 additional from the a la carte.

They are so sweet here! They had a private party the night I wanted to order takeout and still accommodated my order. The food is also AMAZING. Totally worth the price with such a good choice of ingredients. You can tell they put a lot of thought into their menu. I ordered the to go kaisen box.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a real gem.
I love that it's just an hour, because who wants to eat for hours on end, and just 78$ for the omakase (such a good deal), and it's just all different fish (none of the other random stuff that usually comes in an omakase like chalawanmushi) Of course I'm going to like Toro and Uni and Botan Ebi. But even types of fish that I don't usually like as much (Madai and Shima Aji) was prepared in a way that made it delicious. And even the seasoning in the Ikura was wonderful (instead of just being straight up salty, it was clearly cured in a lightly yuzu-flavored, slightly but not overwhelmingly sweet soy sauce mixture). They also didn't go over the top with the toppings. Just a bit of citrus zest and sea salt for the scallop or a small brush of soy sauce with a thin thin shaving of truffle. It lets the fish shine. One very small gripe is the foies gras mixed with salmon is a bit intense and the flavors/textures compete for attention. I think they should be separate, though I suppose that would increase costs. Another tiny tiny gripe is I think the sushi chefs could say a little bit more about the toppings and where the fish is from etc, etc.,. I always had to ask and I got great answers, but it's nice if they come with explanations by default :)

Pretty good price for omakase that is 15 piece course for $78. All of the pieces were good and I loved that some of it had toppings on top to mix up the flavor. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to try a new omakase spot.
Be the first to ReplyFood 9/10 Reasonably priced and thick slabs of fish.
Rice to fish ratio is very good. We also got a bottle of sake to pair with, and that worked wonders. My favorites include the Japanese barracuda and chutoro, but honestly, all of the nigiri didn't have any fishiness, I thought they were all relatively fresh. Atmosphere 8/10 A nice little space in Chelsea, a three-sided bar seating with the chefs in the center. Service 7/10 We had to sit for a while before our seating was ready, but I didn't feel rushed eating there.

Fish is so fresh, this is a great omakase spot if you're looking for a more traditional experience. The pieces are presented without much fluff/extras. As with a lot of the more affordable omakase spots in NYC, the seating time limit is 1 hour as they seat new rounds at every top of the hour. So, it will be a bit more rushed. Prob not the best place for a date or longer catch-up session, but great just for the sushi itself!!

Great value omakase option! Such a casual spot and perfect for people who want to experience an omakase but don't want to feel intimidated either. The food was spectacular and everyone was friendly and inviting. Highly recommend.

Be the first to ReplyThe service is the worst out of any restaurant I had been
The service is the worst out of any restaurant I had been in NYC. They only have two servers and they can not manage the all the table. Super stressed out with the attitude. There are no more BYOB (which is fine and understandable) and cordage fee is $40 without offering any cooler. Oh, they will definitely make you hurry to eat, the sushi will start before they serve a glass of water or ask you for the drink. Can't forget to mention they have really bad selections of the sake (300ml) for super pricy too. I will never ever go back to Sanyuu and will not going to recommend to anyone. There are more beautiful and tasty sushi restaurant in NY with under or around $100 omakase. Please do not ruin your date night or celebration at this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: incredible quality sushi, unbeatable price for what
TLDR: incredible quality sushi, unbeatable price for what you get, would definitely come again!!SETTING: made a reservation for a Friday night at 7:30pm relatively easily. The restaurant is bigger than most serving this kind of omakase - counter seating only and about 15 seats. Though crowded (i.e., every seat was taken), we never felt rushed or cramped for space. Very modern, cool decor - the ambiance is nice for date night, friends, family, really any occasion ! FOOD: the sushi here was drool worthy. I'm always blown away by the quality of the sushi from this group (we learned they also own Shinn East, which I also thought was a 5 star meal, and 13 waters, which is on my list of want to gos). The thick cuts of sushi, perfectly sized bites of sushi rice, perfect dab of wasabi... every piece hit. Some pieces tasted fresh out of the ocean, and I've never had such a tender piece of scallop before. We gobbled up every last bite.SERVICE: I loved the service and staff here. Our omakase chef Mike, was amazing- working like a machine to serve 6-8 people at one time. Each piece was perfectly put together and the chef did an incredible job. Not to mention we got the best piece of sushi I've had in my life here (think wagyu, THICK piece of toro on top, with truffle..... drooling as we speak). I would go back just to eat that again and again. No one stood behind us or rushed us or made us feel uncomfortable as other reviews mention so maybe they've changed for the better! We were promptly helped with any request and had a great experience.VERDICT: for this price (around $230 for 2 omakase courses, 2 beers, AND a bottle of sake) and this many pieces of sushi at this quality, Sanyuu may have just topped my list of favorite NYC omakase places that are actually WORTH the pretty penny you inevitably spend!!! Definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyMake sure you show up to your reservation on time.
It's a small place with limited counter seating. The entire meal is timed within 70 minutes because of the chefs fast pace and rhythm. $78 for 14 delicious pieces and a hand roll. If there is still time you can request any supplemental pieces you want to try again. They also serve alcohol. We had read an older Yelp review where it used to be BYOB so we brought a bottle only to be informed that we couldn't drink it there. They stored it in their fridge for us which was nice. Staff was super nice, (young) and the place is very minimal and clean. A great place to keep returning for more delicious and fresh sushi. Everything really was phenomenal!
Be the first to ReplyThis has been our go-to Omakase joint for a few years.
We last visited two weeks ago (it was great) and again this evening. Two weeks ago our experience was a 5. Tonight, somewhere in the 3-3.5 range. There were noticeable changes in service, quality control (two chefs preparing each course differently), and ambience. While the food remained quite good, we felt rushed from the time we sat down. The servers, while we'll meaning, stood behind us which just wasn't a comfortable experience. They're no longer BYOB, however have a very limited beverage menu (mostly Sake by the bottle; no wine). I think this might be the last time in a while that we visit.

A new spot with limited seating inside made for a cosy, minimalist, aesthetically pleasing dinner. Very affordable omakase and decent value for the price. The spot prawn of all pieces was my surprise favorite and I ordered an extra one a la carte at the end. The servers were very attentive and helped all the guests with drink selections as well as those who had BYOB.
Be the first to ReplyValue for money with the quantity and relative menu
Value for money with the quantity and relative menu diversity. What you pay for is what you get though - while ingredients were mostly fresh, there wasn't any that particularly stood out for me. The rice fell flat for me, it wasn't warm nor did it have much flavor to it, and I could feel the unevenness in texture - anyone who enjoys omakase would recognize that the rice or shari, is a very significant part of what makes good sushi. Felt very much like a fast food version of omakase, passable but left me wanting better.

Came here for date night and it was lovely! The fish is fresh, the staff was friendly and kind. Our reservation was for 6:30 PM and we managed to stay till 8:15 PM. A bit unheard of at most omasake spots in NYC. Since they just added a cocktail menu and we weren't sure if they had one, we brought our own bottle of wine which they allowed us to do. Each piece was fresh and creative. I was pretty full with the $85 menu.
Be the first to ReplySuper recommend this place for mid/lower tier omakase.
The space had perfect ambiance for pairs. There aren't that many seats at the counter and you can also really chat with whoever you are with, the acoustics are great and it feels intimate and private. The omakase itself was delicious and felt worth it. Also its byob so I would recommend bringing a sake or a wine to enjoy. For 80$ (pre tip) per person I couldn't really ask for more in this experience.
Be the first to ReplyRelatively new omakase spot by the same owners as Shinn
Relatively new omakase spot by the same owners as Shinn East, Ume, Sekai, and Thirteen Water. I've been to all of these except Ume, and I'd rank it somewhere in the middle. The sashimi starter was a bit disappointing and counts as 5 pieces of the 15. But the nigiri were all decently good - my friend and I thought they did the simple pieces really well (uni, toro, shiro Ebi (+$10 add on), golden eye snapper (+$8), and striped jack to name a few). Some of the "creative" ones were a little too strong and overpowered the taste of the fish, which we didn't like as much (lean tuna + garlic being an example). We ended up getting two extra pieces (white shrimp and golden eye snapper) since we didn't feel completely full. 15 courses for $78 - all in all not bad for the price, but personally would recommend Shinn East or Sekai above this.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a wannabe.
It's a wannabe modern Japanese omakase. It's not, the staff speak Chinese across the bar while the customers are eating. It's a wannabe knowledgeable omakase. It's not, the chef doesn't know where the tuna or the other netas are from. It's a wannabe friendly service. It's not, the staff doesn't really know how to handle billing that go beyond just paying with card (i.e. cash, they don't really know what to do to a point where you have to tell them they have to bring change after a while). What I was impressed with was the temperature and the quality of the rice. It was clear they worked on that. What lacked in professionalism and experience is that they had staff from the back kitchen come up front with earphones on and replace the rice mid service. Omakase is about details. This place fails at details. However, if you are just starting with the omakase scene, this place is good beginning.
Be the first to ReplyIt's been a long time since I left a restaurant mindblown
It's been a long time since I left a restaurant mindblown and sanyuu west restored that passion for dining in me last night! The restaurant's vibe and service were on point and the food was just what I needed after a long day of work. They offer a pretty affordable omakase experience without sacrificing the quality of the fish. My favorite pieces of the meal were the soy marinated king salmon and fluke sashimi, the toro/caviar, and the uni. But every piece was pretty much to die for that it was extremely hard for us to pick a favorite. The pacing of the meal was very good as well and it was BYOB! Most of the other diners also brought their own bottle of alcohol. The restaurant can hold a bit more people than other places I've been to, but it was intimate enough that we were able to hear the piece being presented to us, as well hold a conversation with each other.Definitely a more low key omakase spot that I will be recommending to others and returning to!
Be the first to ReplyDined here with a couple girlfriends and was super excited
Dined here with a couple girlfriends and was super excited to try this new, more affordable omakase. Overall, I really enjoyed the dinner and would be happy to try it again after they settle in a bit more. It's still a fairly new restaurant, so they were BYOB (Yay!) and seemed to be working out a few kinks in the menu. We had read about the $78 standard omakase, and a more Premium option; however the night we went they were only doing the one standard dinner and had a few 'additions' and 'toppings' listed on small blackboards behind the counter. We inquired about those, and were told that the toppings (summer truffle or foie gras) could be added to any piece, but since we didn't know what we were getting it was very confusing as so how we would request them to be added. For additions, they were offered after the final handroll - which was ok, but a bit unusual in my experience. The fish itself was great - very fresh and flavorful. The toppings were well balanced to accentuate the fish, not overpower it. A couple pieces had a teeny bit too much wasabi and the scallop wasn't as sweet as I've had in other places, but otherwise all good. I especially loved the madai and botan ebi, the latter of which was slightly charred and provided for an interesting mix of textures and flavors. We ended up adding on two pieces each - the wagyu (+$13) with foie topping (+$5) and one other (botan ebi for me). I didn't think the wagyu was worth the price, even with my love of foie. Then came dessert, which I hate to say, was super disappointing. It was a sour rice-pudding that tasted like a runny hawaiian poi - and it was not sour-tart, but like a sour-spoiled flavor. I tried one spoon and couldn't go back. My friends tried to eat the pistachios on top, but everyone agreed it wasn't good. I'm all for trying different foods and flavors, but this is not at all what I would expect as a 'dessert' and left the meal ending poorly for me. Aside from the dessert, I really enjoyed the meal and the service/atmosphere. I wasn't stuffed, even with the two extra pieces (and my friend even joked about getting more food after), so it may not be enough for everyone... but I think for the price it's a solid meal and would recommend trying it. Especially while it's still BYOB!
