Tl;dr high expectations, but underperforming; lacked
Tl;dr high expectations, but underperforming; lacked seasoning and depth but great presentation and nice ambience The wife and I are visiting New Orleans for the week, celebrating our second marriage anniversary. We've somehow become our parents, so we decided we should have some Indian food while traveling. We were excited about Saffron's menu, which advertised to have a New Orleans twist to Indian food. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant itself has a nice modern, yet elegant aesthetic. We had made a reservation and were seated quickly. Our waiter was very nice and gave descriptions for the dishes. My wife ordered a mocktail, which had a mix of lime, roasted mango and mint and was lovely. Good blend of flavors with the roasted mango not being overpowering and overall being refreshing. We ordered four small plates first. The fried oysters with naan triangles and salmon pani puri are how we started. The fried oysters were good, but nothing special. They had an average Nola grilled oyster with naan triangles, so missed the opportunity to incorporate Indian flavors. The salmon pani puri again had an eye-catching presentation, but lacked the depth and refreshing flavor that gol gappe are known for. These should be irresistible balls of goodness that you can't get enough of; and that feeling just wasn't there. Next up were the onion pakoda and chaat bird's nest. Onion pakoda had an inconsistency; again, the expectation was crunch throughout with seasoning, but we bit into some soft portions. The dish had two chutneys that gave it nice depth though. As great as the presentation of the chaat bird's nest was, it was the most disappointing. A garbanzo mixture on top of a bed of fried potato strings topped with two chutneys and a crunch, overlying a bed of yogurt; great in theory but again lacking in flavor in garbanzo mixture with the potato strings over-fried and dense at the bottom. Last up was the chicken biryani. Nice presentation in a cast iron pot with saffron, fried onions and soft boiled egg on top. The saffron definitely came through in color and flavor. The chicken was well done and flavorful. Probably the highlight of the meal. However the kitchen seemed backed up and so the dish didn't come out for a while. Overall, a solid 3 out of 5. There's definitely potential but a lack in consistency and a lack of flavor. Over promised but under delivered.

Just happened upon this place while visiting last week and was blown away by the food and creativity! Had the oysters, potato nest, dahl and paneer dishes. Service was spot on, and we had an excellent time! Only feedback was there was a line item on the bill "Kitchen Appreciation". When we asked the server if this went to the kitchen staff, they said it was to pay for medical coverage for the kitchen staff. While I appreciate the owner covering his employees benefits, I find these add-on's confusing and often are detrimental to the gratuity that is left for the staff.

We were in New Orleans celebrating a friend's milestone birthday and decided to try an Indian restaurant for dinner. We picked Saffron based on yelp reviews. The entire dinner was an amazing experience - right from the cocktails to the appetitzers and then the entrees and dessert, each dish was bursting with flavor and authenticity. We had ordered the fish which came with a dollop of curd rice and pickle! We loved it so much that we asked if they could send us seconds of the curd rice. I would like to throw and big shout out to our amazing waiter Landon who always had a smile on his face and was spot on with his recommendations. The highlight of the day was the chef who graciously came out and checked in on each table. You can see his passion reflected in each of the dishes served today. It has been an amazing experience. If you are in NOLA or visiting, do check out this gem of a restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyFood was so intensely good: tasty, healthy, unique.
The service was amazing, and they nailed it on their recommendations. Would love to come back and try the cocktails.

This was among the best Indian restaurants I've ever been to. Fancy ambiance makes it a great choice for a special night out, but amazing food makes it a great choice anytime! The biriyani was fantastic and a plentiful meal; loved that I could taste the saffron in it.
Be the first to ReplyThese dishes were probably once great.
Authentic Indian, from street food to classic dishes, with a NOLA twist. Unfortunately, on a midweek visit, the whole meal seemed rehearsed and mechanical, lacking the character I'm sure it once had. The oysters came out immediately, as though they were sitting there, waiting for us. The gumbo was piping hot, but the side of rice (and the rice that came with the pork vindaloo) was cold. The Potato Nest Chaat, which is made to look special (framed in a box on the menu) was $25 - probably 25x what it costs to make. They even took away the chutneys and told us to let them know if we wanted more (there's a better way not to waste). And the old-fashioned cocktail was "pre-batched", leaving one to wonder where the mango chutney was and what was distinctive on this NOLA twist of a classic. The service, however, was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyNot great if you love the classics of American based Indian
Not great if you love the classics of American based Indian cuisine. The naan isn't there. The bright flavors of great Indian food is just missing. Regardless of whether it's traditional or a modern take on this cuisine, you have to impress with flavor. There's not much under the hood here even though the presentation layer is hip. The really fishy and unfresh seafood in the bouillabase is noteworthy and shows the ingredients are pretty subpar. But the really boring naan that comes out cold and almost crusty really show that they have no idea what they're doing. Three stars for making up for the food with excellent service and nice ambiance. There was no alcohol in my cocktail.

Have not been able to get out of the apps yet! Really tasty treats, plated beautifully!
Be the first to ReplySaffron is one our favorite places in New Orleans.
We usually make the reservations a month ahead to make sure we get in. The cocktails are top of the line at Saffron! The charbroiled oysters served with naan bread are the best I've ever tasted. Friends that came with us could not stop talking about them. For the table we ordered Pork Vindaloo, a few orders of chicken Biryani, one of the specials, a kebob dish, and a few gumbos. Every dish was better than the last. The food here is amazing! Saffron's staff are very attentive and the restaurant is so warm and inviting with ambient lighting. The bar is great, too.
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed the experience here.
Beautiful ambiance, really low key. The grilled shrimp curry was much milder than I expected but I still inhaled it. Would stay away from the roti and only get the naan. Chicken biryani was good not great -- didn't quite meet expectations. The squash appetizer was the best dish we had (my picture came out blurry so I couldn't post )

Saffron Nola is such a gem! The ambiance has great attention to detail so you are blown away as soon as you take a seat. The service is very attentive and thoughtful. Everyone seemed eager to make our experience special and unforgettable. This would be a great spot for a special event. The food was very flavorful, tasty, and unique. There were a ton of vegetarian options as well.

Indian/Creole fusion? Sign me up! This was a great meal all around, and I can see why the chef is a James Beard finalist. The dining room and ambience is wonderful, very modern and with a cool modern playlist in the background. Service was on point at every juncture with a friendly staff, and we even had an appearance from the chef to present and serve the Biryani dish. The cocktail list is large, diverse and very interesting, not to mention delicious. The sommelier was great and helped explain our beverage options. Our waitress was friendly and professional. How about the food you ask? An explosion of flavors! Do not pass up on the "oyster bed roast". Fantastic flavors, perhaps not really Indian flavors, but wow did this plate surprise me with delicious tasting oysters. The onion Pakoda was another big hit at our table. Somewhat like a blooming onion but oh so much better. I could have eaten the entire dish on my own, but grudgingly shared with the other diners at our table. We were a party of four, and all were happy with our food. Entrees were reasonably sized and shareable if you have some appetizers. The biryani was really delicious and a large portion. Our waitress suggested the side order of Raita, which was a pretty sophisticated rendition, and so glad we ordered it. We enjoyed the food so much that we were just simply too full to explore the dessert menu. We will absolutely need to visit again on our next trip to New Orleans. In a city of great dining, this is a real gem
Be the first to ReplyOn par with the best Indian restaurants in the UK.
Excellent food. Still a very underrated restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyI've wanted to go to this restaurant for some time.
It was recommended by a coworker and a member of my synagogue. A friend was in town from New York and when she suggested this restaurant, I jumped at the chance. We shared two appetizers which were quite flavorful: Pakodas and crab pudha. I had the eggplant dish: Baingan bartha which was vegetarian and felt lighter than many other local vegetarian fare. Often, it seems like local vegetarian restaurants compensate for no meat with added fat and calories. This dish was tasty without being overwhelming in calories.Edited to add: you have to have nan also. It was a pillow of flavor.
Be the first to ReplyI recently visited Saffron and had an incredible experience.
The staff was incredibly attentive and seemed to operate as a well-oiled team. The bartender even suggested I try the lamb, which I don't usually order, and it turned out to be a real treat. The lamb was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend it to any red meat eater. Overall, Saffron is a must-visit for anyone in search of delicious Indian cuisine and top-notch service.

The service is great and the food is even more spectacular!! Eating here I forgot I was in New Orleans, I thought I was in India! It's like Indian food with intense culinary mastery. 10/10 would recommend.

A must try if you're in New Orleans and exploring the length of magazine street. The music and ambiance was spectacular and the food had immense amounts of delicious flavor. Each dish better than the next. Really recommend the Pork Vindaloo! Would love to come back again on our next visit to New Orleans.

Everything! Have ALL the things! BEST naan I've ever had! Same for the chicken. If it's on the menu, order it. If it's the daily special, same. A place this good, one would expect exceptional service. And YES, it's got it for sure. This place is beautiful, we'll lit, warm, and suer cozy.
Be the first to ReplyIndian cuisine, New Orleans hospitality, Magazine Street
Indian cuisine, New Orleans hospitality, Magazine Street savoir faire, with a sumptuous interior that is somehow as upscale as it is cozy... this is like my perfect choice for a night out. I absolutely loved every bite, every sip. From the moment you walk in and you're met with the aromatics, until you take your last bite (wishing to the fates you had more room in your stomach after a week in New Orleans), you'll be so happy this was the choice you made. Perfect for a meeting with old friends, work friends, new loves, far-flung and reunited besties... it's hard to imagine what this would not be a good pick for when you're here. I'm so thankful my colleague suggested it (and secured the reservation). I always feel like New Orleans is a little bit other-worldly, but somehow, Saffron takes that to a new height. I hope to get to come back to Saffron, but I'm also smart enough to recognize a once-in-a-lifetime experience when I see one. I'm thankful to have spent a few hours of my wild life, tucked into a dimly lit booth, solving the world's problems over biriyani with a person I'm lucky to call a friend.
Be the first to ReplyNOT A FOOD REVIEW! Reservation for 5pm.
Arrived at 4:53 and the door was open so we attempted to go in just to wait inside since it was 45 degrees outside. Told to wait outside in the cold and come back in 8 minutes. They locked the door behind us. Stood outside in the cold then tried the door at 5 and it was still locked. We left. Not how you treat customers if you want them to come back.
Be the first to ReplyWow! This place is fantastic! Best Indian food I've had in.
. forever. Really! That good! Delicious, authentic, great service! I'm very impressed!!

I walked in last night after reading great reviews and this place lives up to the hype. I left so full after each amazing dish. The staff was very friendly and had lots of compliments and wit. Great mood lighting for a romantic night.
Be the first to ReplySaffron came up as an advertisement on Instagram and I
Saffron came up as an advertisement on Instagram and I found the concept of fusion Indian and southern food so interesting! Made a reservation straight away for an anniversary celebration with my boyfriend. For food, we had the Bombay shrimp, chicken Lasooni, shrimp gumbo, and oyster bed. The shrimp and chicken were to dieeee for! I've never had chicken so perfectly tender. My mouth is water just thinking albout it. Shrimp was also so flavorful and delicious. As far as the oysters, they're chargrilled. I usually hate chargrilled, but I found these pretty decent. My boyfriend hates oysters and will only eat chargrilled but that too begrudgingly, and he thought these were fantastic! So if you're someone who likes chargrilled, this is a must. Shrimp gumbo was also good, but nothing spectacular. For drinks, we had the anti-inflammatory which was okay, and the raw silk which was really good! Had a couple more but can't remember what they're called. Perfect ambience to celebrate an occasion or for a special date night.
