Rintaro San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Rintaro offers a unique take on the Japanese Izakaya
Rintaro offers a unique take on the Japanese Izakaya experience. The beautiful indoor space Includes a bar (made from a single slab of hinoki cedar) that separates guests from the open kitchen. They make their own tofu, umeshu, umeboshi, and other fresh pickles. First things first: reservations are a must. If you don't snag one, you'll be facing their waitlist, and even with a reservation, your entire party needs to be present to be seated. There's no set time limit while you dine, but once you've finished your meal, the table will be needed for eager patrons waiting their turn. Rintaro offers both a tasting menu and an a la carte option, but be aware - the tasting menu is an all-or-nothing affair. Everyone at your table needs to commit to the tasting experience, which is a standard norm at most restaurants that offer a tasting menu. We opted for the a la carte menu. While there were some definite highlights, there were also a few misses that kept the experience from being truly exceptional. Let's start with the high notes. The Sakana Furai (minced yellowtail amberjack and white miso) was the star of the show. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the panko crust achieved a delightful balance of crispiness and lightness. The accompanying Rintaro tartar sauce added a welcome tang. The Hojicha Panna Cotta was another winner. This Japanese toasted green tea panna cotta was light and refreshing, with a subtle tea flavor and a delightfully smooth, almost jelly-like texture that balanced perfectly with the almond cookie. The Yosedofu (freshly-made silken tofu) lived up to its name. It was incredibly silky and jiggly, with a clean flavor that showcased the quality of the ingredients. The Kama Tama Udon (Rintaro hand-rolled udon "carbonara") was also flavorful, with the udon itself boasting a good texture. However, the katsuobushi (shaved bonito flakes) was a bit of a letdown, being chewier than ideal. Unfortunately, some dishes fell short. The Hanetsuki Gyoza (Becker Lane Berkshire pork gyoza with chicken foot jelly and "wings") sounded unique, but in reality, it was just ordinary gyoza. The promised "wings" amounted to a small amount of ground meat and didn't add much to the flavor profile. Similarly, the Yakitori Negima (charcoal-grilled chicken thigh + onion) was surprisingly bland and dry. The Kyuuri chu hai deserves a mention as a well-balanced and refreshing drink. Overall, Rintaro was a 3-star experience. There's definite potential here, with some delicious dishes and a beautiful space. Rintaro might be worth a try, but be sure to manage your expectations.
In SF on business, and I was very lucky to land a walk in
In SF on business, and I was very lucky to land a walk in seat at 5 pm when they opened for dinner. It's a very beautiful space, fresh and artful but unstuffy, wabi sabi feel. Service was excellent, very present and attentive to detail. The artistry at this restaurant is elevated; it was a special experience for me to get to try it. Gindara no sunomono was outstanding, miso black cod had melting texture and great contrast with delicate thinky sliced cucumber, lightly tangy and refreshing. Freshly made tofu was an experience to eat; the waitress guided me in spooning it onto the plate and mixing it with shoyu, ginger, green onion and shaved katsuoboshi. Anchovies were fried to perfection like they do in France, I loved the pickled kumquat with these, though the dish could have used more kumquat and less anchovy to make it more balanced. My favorite thing was hojicha panna cotta. The custard itself wasn't sweet at all, just had a subtle tea flavor, enhanced by the tea syrup, very elegant dessert presented prettily.
Food is very good.
A great variety and the dishes are unique. We especially loved the tempura and tofu

Yum! Everything I ordered was on point and the udon was freshly cut by the Sensai next to us! Totally best udon texture that I've had in my life! Would definitely go again
Huge Disappointment
Rintaro was a huge disappointment for us. Cool atmosphere and great service but the food was consistently boring and bland. After two of our six selections we looked at each other and asked “are we in the right place?” Sashimi was just okay and the squid salad had almost no squid. Other selections were the same. Solid saki list but beer and wine selection was pathetic. One crappy tasting white? Really? We just don’t get the hype.

Walked in for party of 2 on a Friday evening around 8pm and waited around 5 mins. There was an available table in the outdoor area that had a reservation coming so they gave us a 1 hour time limit, which was fine by us. We shared the yosedofu (silken tofu), yakitori momo sansho, yakitori sasami, and maguro no yukke (tuna don). Yosedofu was decent. It was very fresh but personally felt like it was too plain if you didn't put enough sauce/toppings, but then a bit too salty if you did add the sauce. The consistency of the silken tofu was a bit too thick/creamy for my liking. Between the two yakitori orders, both were great but I liked the yakitori momo sansho better. The chicken was very tender with a nice smoky grill taste. The maguro no yukke was my favorite dish! Tuna was very fresh and it came with a side of nori over burning charcoal which kept the nori fresh and crispy. Mixing the raw egg yolk in the bowl made it very creamy and I enjoyed it. Service was wonderful. Everybody we interacted with was super welcoming and friendly. The ambience is super beautiful. Can't go wrong with either indoor or outdoor seating. Feels cozy and peaceful yet bustling at the right level at the same time.
Probably top 10 meal ever eaten.
Outstanding, creative, subtle and bold flavors. All perfectly balanced. Just beautiful. Our server was not very attentive but the rest of the staff was. Kitchen staff was a delight to watch at their craft. This place is art.
Really cute little spot with fun Japanese decor.
The izakaya food was great but I wish they had more authentic bits (was really craving offal meats). The sashimi was decent, not the best fish but also by no means bad either. Service was friendly and ambience was good.
The food was so good.
Service was impeccable and the space is beautiful. Can't believe I hadn't tried the place all these years. Def coming back.
Amazing quality food, surprisingly drinks were my highlight
Amazing quality food, surprisingly drinks were my highlight of the night I had a yuzu infused cocktail. Unfortunately, we went during on of the last hours and many things were sold out, so if you want more bang for your buck i would go at least 3 hours before closing on a busy day. Service was nice and the space was cozy with good music playing.
Food: Everything tasted good and was cooked expertly.
The house umeshu (plum wine) and hojicha panna cotta were favorites. Unfortunately, nothing else stood out as exceptional and the set menu courses came out a little fast and started to pile up. Service: Staff were great. Everyone was kind and available when you needed them. As of June 2024, there were no service fees added to the menu price. Vibe: This is among the most enjoyable places to eat a meal in the city. The dining room is naturally bright and has a lively atmosphere. Open kitchen. Avant garde rock and jazz funk music. Woody scent (cedar?) in the dining room. Buzzy but not too loud.
Excellent Japanese food
Excellent Japanese food in a cool environment. The service was excellent. We sat at the counter and enjoyed our conversation with the chefs, especially Brian. The Kama and miso cod were excellent. The homemade tofu and kake udon were also excellent. We will be back when we’re in San Francisco again.
Rintaro is a must-visit when you're in SF.
The restaurant is decorated with beautiful Japanese keepsakes and its wooden architecture mixed with plants and thoughtful lighting make you relaxed and feel like you're immersed in a new place while on travel. I did the tasting menu, which allowed me to try out a lot of the "hits" on the menu. I got to sit along the bar facing the kitchen, where you can interact with the chefs and watch as the chefs grill seafood, plate food beautifully, and blend ingredients impeccably. Everyone on staff, including your server, the hostess, and beyond, treat you so kindly and warmly. I loved every step of my tasting menu. Some of my favorite parts included the sashimi, the hand-rolled udon, "bathing" daikon and fishcake, korokke, and the charcoal-grilled chicken. The dessert has a delicate green tea flavor that truly wows you. As you can tell, I pretty much enjoyed every part of my meal. For a tasting menu, you come away pretty full, extremely satiated, and very satisfied with a wonderful experience. I thought the price was also reasonable for SF, especially with the amount of food you get with the tasting menu. Worth a try and I look forward to visiting again soon!
Love the vibe! Wonderful, attentive service.
Delicious food. Got lucky as a walk-in on a busy night.
we had a dinner reservation at 5:00pm and we were seated
we had a dinner reservation at 5:00pm and we were seated right away. very quick service and loved the ambiance: think a fancy japanese cars land. if mater from cars land had generational japanese wealth and opened a restaurant. kanpachi no sashimi: this was amazing. they give 2 different types of ponzu. mix the fish with the ponzu and the GREEN SAUCE. this was life-changing hanetsuki gyoza: only OK, wouldn't order again. it's made with chicken jelly, but honestly this wasn't that special furofuki daikon: this oden soup was brewing for 3 days, according to the waitress. AMAZING! an earthier, richer cousin to the miso soup. the daikon was an added bonus kurobuta tonkatsu: this dish was nice. also nothing super special, but the chicken was very fresh and juicy! halitosis tsukune & inner thigh yakitori (off the menu): these 2 skewers were amazing. the meat literally melts on your tongue, and combined with the spice powder... perfection. kama tama udon: their most popular noodle dish, and i can see why. a combo of ginger, onion, butter, sesame, yummy goodness. order this!! hojicha pacotta: simply delicious! only wish they give bigger portions of this because this dessert is something i could never get tired of
I wanted to like this place, but it was by far the most
I wanted to like this place, but it was by far the most expensive AND worst tasting meal of our week-long trip to San Francisco. My husband and I did the set dinner menu. The yakitori, I'm sorry to say, was disgusting. It was all gristle and crunchy fat/grease. When I remember that dish, it gives me chills at how gross it was. The other dishes were bland and bitter. The one good dish was the panna cotta dessert. I feel bad leaving a negative review but the dishes were complete misses here and I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Highly recommended, the sashimi is sourced from known
Highly recommended, the sashimi is sourced from known fishermen, the options are unique and well paired with the menu, would totally come here again -smoked buckwheat tea on ice
Everything went well.
The food was spectacular. Did the tasting menu. Since I went during Lent and it was a Friday, I wanted to do the tasting menu but not have any meat. They offer a pescatarian option for the tasting menu also did the sake pairing which was truly the best sake I've had. Service was fantastic. The vibes were so great. We sat in their outside courtyard area which had this cover very high over the top and so many well-working heaters so we weren't cold at all. And it was late February. Cannot speak more highly of this place.
The food is excellent, nice heated patio, we tried the set
The food is excellent, nice heated patio, we tried the set menu and it was great. It's hard to find the restaurant and parking is hard so take a Lyft

Came for an early dinner on Friday evening for 2 in their courtyard seating section. Should def try to get a reservation in advance as it's quite busy. Got recommend 5-7 dishes for 2 people and that was a solid amount of food: Tuna croquette- 3/5 tasted good but kind of reminded me of what a fried tuna meatloaf would taste like Kama Tama udon - 3/5 al dente udon for sure, kind of plain tasting though Yakitori - 4/5 wish I got more options like the chicken thigh and pork Crab salad - 3.5/5 generous portion of crab and the kumquat was a nice garnish, but the lettuce was bitter Mabodufu - 3.5/5 solid and cozy with nice balance of ginger and green onion Overall 4/5 since the ambience is wonderful and staff is attentive. Came here for bday and multiple staff wished us happy bday. Will come again to try other menu options
My husband and I loved our experience here! We were seated
My husband and I loved our experience here! We were seated at the counter, which we love because we enjoy watching all the kitchen action. We were browsing the menu and saw that Rintaro had a $75 set menu option that looked really good. We ended up ordering that! The set menu was delicious and super filling! My favorites were the chicken & cheese katsu (juicy chicken + light and crisp batter was a match made in heaven), the ikura don (their ikura was SO good), and the hojicha panna cotta. I cannot explain how delicious the hojicha panna cotta is--so perfectly creamy, not too sweet, and had the fragrant hojicha flavor. Overall we had a great experience and would love to come back to try more of the menu!
Absolutely one of the best Japanese restaurants I've been
Absolutely one of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to! Sustainable and locally sourced, utilizing Japanese techniques and tastes, perfect blending of traditional preparation with a California twist. Along with the delicious food, the artistic plating and impeccable service beg you to hurry to find the next evening you can return to try more dishes. How lucky we are to have such a wonderful place !!!
Food was good.
I was disappointed that they sold out their set menu. It was to celebrate my son's birthday and we were looking forward to the set menu.
Located in San Francisco, parking can be hard to find here
Located in San Francisco, parking can be hard to find here so just a heads up. Upon entering the restaurant, they have a beautiful outdoor seating with heating available. If you sit outside, you can see someone make the oden meals. The interior inside is gorgeous, gave me a cozy vibe that brought me back to Japan. Service here was top notch. I really liked that they were attentive if we needed more water or had any questions regarding the menu. Everyone was super friendly here and welcoming. They have a variety of food on their menu where they are under different types of meals: Sashimi, Dressed dishes, Ryo Unagi, Oden, Fried dishes, Yakitori, Final dish (rice/udon), and Dessert. If you feel like you can't pick and choose they do offer a set menu with their popular dishes that costs $75 per person. All the food we ordered ended up being so delicious! The maguro was so fresh, the udon and the broth tasted so good that you can tell it was cooked for a long time since the broth was so flavorful. The oden really brought us back to our time in Japan. Luckily, when we went there was someone from Japan who was grilling the unagi. The unagi tasted so different from what one typically gets from a japanese restaurant. Try it, you won't forget it. Unfortunately, we ended up ordering so much food that we didn't have room for dessert. Definitely coming back again to try out more dishes AND the dessert!
A treasure in the Mission
We have a new favorite for our Wednesday Date Night. The place was so busy and the staff is so friendly while being totally professional. Our waiter suggested the Prix Fixe so that we would get a chance to try all their "Greatest Hits" so that is what we did. We added a plate of sushi to start which was some of the freshest fish I have had. There was a selection of wasabi, mustard, and a sauce for the fresh scallop that was so good. The Yakitori Tsukune was so tender and flavorful it could be a meal on its own. My favorite was the Mabodofu Don which is what I am definitely ordering the next time we go. My husband enjoyed it all - especially watching the owner hand prepare the Udon noodles we had in our Kake Udon.
Excellent food, overwhelmingly loud music
I’d been wanting to go to Rintaro ever since a friend raved about it some months ago. I wish I could rave but being there felt more like being IN a rave. The music was excruciatingly loud such that we couldn’t hear people sitting next to us never mind on the other side of the table. We asked for it to be turned down which it was but the difference was negligible. When I asked again, the server said she’d already asked them and that she wasn’t in charge of the music. I could go on with details but suffice to say that the music was so loud that it was hard to enjoy the excellent food. If you like Hard Rock Cafe-level sound, you’ll love this. If not, bring earplugs. No joke. And order the reasonably priced and delicious tasting menu.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
