Restaurante Akelarre | Pedro Subijana Donostia Reviews from The Last Year
An impressive experience
Impressive, it cannot be described any other way. The food, the wines, the views, the attention, everything is a pleasure and is taken care of with exquisite care.
Great Atmosphere
The service and atmosphere were above the clouds. One of the best Michelin experiences that I’ve ever had. The food was super fishy which is also local and I know it is super personal as well. We’ve been there in March, I cannot imagine how lovely it would be during June/July where you can sit outside and sip your champagne during sunset!
Overnight stay with dinner
We stayed in the hotel overnight and had lunch, dinner and breakfast. We were wowed from the moment we entered. The view is stunning. The architecture very modernist, and the steel staircase phenomenal. We were taken to our room on the lower second floor, and we were super impressed when we entered. It was very elegantly designed, with a superbly comfortable bed, amazing windows with views to the ocean and seamless storage with hidden doors. The staff were all super attentive and friendly. We loved the complimentary bottle of Rioja in our room. We used the spa facilities and enjoyed the steam and sauna. My only feedback is that the whirlpool jets lacked power, and the temperature was a little too cool to be totally relaxing. For dinner we had tasting menu A, and switched out a few dishes with menu B. The service was effortless and just seemed to happen flawlessly in the background. The decor was minimalist, and at night you don’t get the benefit of the sweeping ocean views, which you would do at lunchtime. There was nothing in the decor to remind me that I was in Spain or San Sebastián, it’s a very neutral palette. The food used traditional elements but I struggle to identify a stand out dish. The presentation of each dish was very creative but the tastes and flavours didn’t deliver an awesome stand out dish for me personally. There is nothing at fault it’s just personal taste I’m afraid. I would recommend going for lunch to take advantage of the views.
Marvelous
Either menu is worth it!!! Pure art!!! Everything special and unforgettable!!!! Very professional and friendly service. Finish off by drinking coffee on the terraces of the Oteiza space, a true experience
No comparison to other 3-star restaurants
This restaurant is primarily impressive due to its incomparable location on the cliffs of the Bay of Biscay, which is unfortunately the only criterion for the star rating. Once through the door, the tables are lined up close together, the restaurant is completely overcrowded on a Saturday lunchtime, any atmosphere disappears in a cacophony of increasingly loud voices and the staff are at their limit. There is no trace of the service expected of a 3-star Michelin restaurant. The champagne is served unchilled, apparently the selection of varieties is too large for the storage capacity. This is followed by a series of rather unimpressive dishes that did not leave a lasting impression in terms of taste. At some point the star chef took a quick look into the room and then disappeared back into the kitchen without even greeting a table. In our opinion, the rating of this restaurant is at best historically based, in fact it hardly meets the standard for one star, let alone three.
amazing
We arrived wet from the rain and everyone there was like family, extremely kind. And the most important, the food, was of course amazing, not a single dish disappointed
Go for the view and the lovely staff
Let me begin with the very good things. The STAFF! Wonderful, charming and delightful people. The location. It is the main reason I had picked this place. The view is spectacular. When I booked I had 8 (Michelin Rest.) options in San Sebastian, to choose from. As mentioned before I mainly chose it for the setting. I strongly suggest that you go during the day. In the night you will not get to see the panoramic view and I cannot imagine that the lighting in the evening is going to enhance your dining experience. As for the food it was underwhelming.
Nice Food
It feels like it should be given 5/5 (which I give it) because it is a 3*, but something is missing, it's a feeling that it lacks some spark. The service is very pleasant, but it is not spectacular, it is very correct, but it lacks level staging. The food is good, but you don't fall in love with it. I see the timing of the pass as very correct. When we compare it with other 3* restaurants it does not reach the top 3, it remains "tied" in fourth place. You have to innovate and add it to dishes, service and presentation. If you think about the price I don't think it corresponds to the experience. I see it as very expensive, it is not proportional. And without a doubt, the best thing is the views you have while you eat.
Slight disappointment
Great culinary experience even if sometimes not all the expected flavors were there. Beautiful, neat presentation. An attentive sommelier who took time to explain the wines presented to us. Good service until 3/4 of the meal then after a certain hour we had the unpleasant feeling of being "abandoned" for the end of the meal. We had to call on someone to get a coffee. It's a good 2 stars... maybe not 3.
Disappointing, and disappointed
My partner's birthday. Booked since August, with great enthusiasm, thinking of going to one of the “no va más” of Spanish gastronomy. Big mistake of mine, for not reading the negative, and completely accurate, comments about this restaurant. What can we do…! Privileged location, with spectacular views; all the ingredients needed for a fantastic meal; all but one, perhaps the most important, THE KITCHEN and, specifically, the two, and unique, menus they offer. In this type of restaurants, with one or more Michelin stars, the experience is very similar: very attractive dishes, with a lot of color and a lot of verbiage in the presentation of each one. It is what is popular today but, in a restaurant of this category, you cannot leave with the feeling of having been in one with fewer stars (and at half the price). As has been said in other comments, none of the dishes were up to par. Tasteless (as we told the waitress, when she became interested in it) and not at all flashy; nothing surprising and nothing to remember (except disappointment). Nothing we haven't seen/tried in other restaurants, even below them. From my point of view, charging €5.5 for a coffee, on a bill of almost €700, does not look good. The service, very good, pleasant and correct. The detail for my partner's birthday is appreciated. We missed the presence of Pedro Subijana who, while in the room, did not approach any table in our vicinity to take an interest in the food. By the way, I greeted him when he was returning from the WC, and I asked him if he could take a photo with us: he replied that “in a while, in here (indicating another room).” We were waiting there until we saw that we were alone. We paid and I became interested in the photo in question… “It can't be, Mr. Subijana is no longer here,” was the response of an employee. In short, I consider that it is a restaurant that the “Michelin” should take a look at and be stricter with their stars; From my point of view, there are some leftovers. There are restaurants, with one star, from which you leave much more satisfied. NOT TO RECOMMEND. Mr. Subijana, I would appreciate it if you or someone from your restaurant responded to my comment. Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
