Restaurant Rosso Peperoncino Taormina Reviews from The Last Year
Relaxing, friendly and wonderful food!
We were looking for a lunch restaurant in Taormina but so many looked like tourist traps. We saw a sign for Rosso Pepperoncino. It's a bit off the main walk and a little downhill. A local resident noted our discussion and said we should try it, helping us make up our minds. First thing you will note, is how cute they've made the restaurant. We appreciated being away from the bustle of the main street and noted a number of couples known by the staff. Repeat/local customers tell me a lot. We were seated quickly and noted the hostess to be very friendly. We ordered the citrus salad to start (oranges, leeks, onion and olives). It was DELICIOUS - reason to visit Taormino all by itself!! I mean, AMAZING. I got the homemade ravioli filled with shellfish in prawn and zuccini sauce, my daughter the homemade ravioli filed with aubergines in swordfish, cherry tomatoes and wild fennel sauce, my son-in-law the gnocchi with prawns and basil cream and my wife the spaghetti alla carbonara. We gave tastes to each other and I can honestly say that I'm not sure which was best, they were all so good! End of the day, this is a MUST VISIT in my mind. Relaxing, friendly and wonderful food! It helped make our trip to Taormina a wonderful one!!
Lovely restaurant away from the madding crowd!
Taormina old town is manicly busy with dozens of restaurants - we were recommended this one or we'd never have seen it as it is tucked away just off the main street. You are seated in a delightful, cool courtyard, the service is friendly, English speaking, and the menu extensive. Food was good, wine list included some excellent Sicilian wines and the price was fair. We returned there a second time which is as good a recommendation as any.
Great dinner, but too little of the tomato sauce on the spaghetti
Our dinner at the end of our fourth day here on holiday in Taormina was spent at this attractive restaurant, located down at the bottom of a stepped alleyway off of the Corso Umberto (the Taormina Centro main street). The alleyway runs down the eastern side of the Duomo di Taormina (a basilica having the features of, or having been built, to serve as a cathedral). The restaurant has a large enclosed patio area with a roof, suitable for ‘semi-outside’ dining. This patio area was empty save one diner who was all but ‘ostracized’ because he was smoking (quite right too). Inside the restaurant was not particularly busy, apart from a large dining party of English-speaking tourists who were moderately noisy and got increasingly noisy as the wine flowed. There were one or two other couples, plus ourselves, in what was a good-sized and pleasant dining room. We were approached by a very pleasant manager/waiter who confirmed that we could have a table for dinner. We studied the wine list and sought advice for a bottle of white wine that was dry, with subtle fruit tones. He recommended a the Principi di Butera Grillo (at €30). This was excellent and very much enjoyed. The menu here was truly impressive, featuring a very good choice of plates and dishes. After much consideration my Partner chose the start with Mussels, followed-by a main of Spaghetti Carbonara. I chose to start with the Parma Ham and Burrata Cheese, and a main of two combined plates of Spaghetti in tomato sauce and Meatballs. The mussels were really good, served with toasted bread to mop-up the cooking liquor (latter made with wine and herbs) in the bottom of the bowl. My Partner really did enjoy this great starter. My starter featured Burrata, an Italian cow's milk cheese made from mozzarella blended with cream. The outer casing is solid cheese, whilst the inside contains stracciatella (literally ‘little rags’ of cheese) and clotted cream, giving it a lovely, but unusual and distinctly soft, texture. This starter was really different and absolutely fantastic. Our Spaghetti plates were entirely different but the spaghetti on both was perfectly cooked. My Partner had a carbonara sauce which is a cheese sauce served with crisped pancetta pieces and a sprinkling of black pepper. My tomato based sauce was a bit mean: I really would have liked more sauce with the pasta and to accompany what were actually very firm, meaty and tasty meatballs. Overall the main plates were very good, but I love the taste of a good tomato sauce and there just wasn’t enough of it. I decided to take a dessert and I’m a sucker for Panna Cotta, it is my all-time favourite Italian dessert and this one was very good and very much enjoyed. My Partner declined a dessert, but did have an Americano Coffee with hot milk and a glass of ‘Amaretto di Saronno Aroma’ (Bitter Almond Oil). On our way out we noted the smoker had gone.
Best meal we had during our 2 weeks in Sicily
Best meal we had in Sicily(2 weeks). We had Raw Sweet Shrimp*, Squid Sicilian Style, Rocket salad, Pistachio Ice Cream and of course a bottle of dry white wine. It was all great. *Raw Sweet Shrimp are usually only found in high end sushi restaurants where we live and are typically about $5 each.
Great Food and excellent service.
We had a wonderful experience here. Every dish we ordered was just delicious. The service was prompt and friendly. We’ve been to several restaurants in Taormina and this was definitely the best!
Good Food. Service needs improvement.
We were recommended to this restaurant by our hotel in Taormina. It's centrally located. The food was good. The service, however wasn't great. The servers weren't friendly and didn't smile much. They weren't attentive so it took too long to find them when we needed something and then more time to actually get what we needed. Since it was our first dinner in Taormina, we didn't think much about the lack of service. However, after having many more meals in Taormina, we found the service in the other restaurants we ate at to be exceptional. There are so many other places to eat in this lovely town that have both good food and service. This would not be my first choice.
