Very very bad experience
Visited this restaurant for the first time last night. The food was decent & the ambiance was great. Our hostess & waitress were courteous, personable, and polite. It wasn't until towards the end of our meal that our experienced became uncomfortable & very disturbing. I decided to order a nightcap. Service was kind of slow all night, so i didnt think anything when it took a little longer than "normal" to get my glass of wine. At some point a very curt and unapologetic employee by the name of Chris approached our table and attempted to explain (while fumbling over his words as if he was searching for an explanation) that the last call for drinks was 10:15pm, albeit i ordered my drink before that time. He stated that our waitress just approached him about the drink. I asked why was i being penalized because he just received my order. He stated that they were a neighborhood restaurant and was settling down. Keep in mind, the place had at least 20 patrons or more still enjoying the beverages. I let it go! It wasnt until i saw the table nestled in the corner with 6 or more caucasian patrons receive what appeared to be "shots". I immediatedly called chris over and requested an explanation. He explained those were desert wines they ordered a long time ago & had to be chilled. I asked him repeatedly did they order before 10:15pm. He stated yes. So i repeatedly stated that i ordered my wine before that time, and asked what was the difference in our orders. chris expressed a clear indifference to my frustration. We spent a good amount that included an automatic 20 percent tip. We were mindful & polite patrons the entire time in the establishment. The only difference i saw in the situation was the color of everyones skin. Those patrons that received their chilled desert wines at approximately 10:47pm (yes i purposely noticed the time) were caucasian and i was among the handful of Black patrons in the restaurant. chris is rude with an obvious bias for persons that spend money at primrose. SN: i chuckled when he thought he had to point out that primrose was a neighborhood restaurant. lowercase chris i am fully aware of that!!! Get this chris i grew up in that neighborhood!!!!. Lived there for over 20 years guess what else lowercase chris...i even went to Saint Anthonys 2 blocks away....can you imagine 😳. This is my first and only experience feeling this kind of discomfort in an area restaurant. I informed chris i will be sure to share my experience not only here but every social media platform/professional, networking, and social setting!!!! Don't judge people chris. We know the city is gentrified, but treat everyone fairly....especially when we are spending the same green money. Next time ill stick with Brooklyn's Finest. DC is filled with great restaurants that dont show bias or discriminate....but ill make sure everyone knows about the one that employs persons that do so willfully & cheerfully.

We celebrated our anniversary with our family at Primrose. The food was excellent and the staff was great. The barman recommended some really good wine for us. The atmosphere is very nice. We will go back.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t bother
The staff at this restaurant is excellent. We commend the service. We selected this restaurant because of the French menu, the ratings, and the area of DC. We we're willing to pay the inflated prices because we believed the ratings, and believed the menu would be available. We were wrong! Southwest Virginia cuisine is very different from French cuisine. Please don't just spring this on patrons, unless you understand that no one will come there and no one will pay the same prices for Stanton food they pay for French food. Our first visit is also our last.

Excellent meal & service; portions on small side but quite good & tasty; nice wine selection and tempting desserts; overall great dining experience
Be the first to ReplyExcellent French food!
We dined for brunch on Easter here. it was the first time we ate at this restaurant. The food was wonderful! as well the service and decor. The only negative was they are imposing a 20% service fee on all orders.
Be the first to ReplyFood surprisingly mediocre at best, service slow,
This was a great disappointment. First the service is slow. After being seated, my guest and I were waiting 6 or 7 minutes before anyone came to the table and then we waited another 10 for our drinks to arrive. Slowness in wine and drinks was a feature of the evening, with some food arriving before the accompanying wine and the waiter at one point saying 'the bar is a little slow tonight'. My guest ordered butternut squash soup for a starter, which they thought was fine if a little cool. I had the cheese and meats board which was also fine. My main course was, however, not good. I ordered halibut which came dried out (overcooked or held too long) and on a bed of green beans that were slightly undercooked so really challenged the texture of the fish. It was topped by a mound of fennel too large for fish serving and the tomato coulis was at the bottom of the pile, a long distance from the fish. I could have done a lot better myself at home. My guest ordered the steak which they said was ok if not spectacular in any way. The one highlight was the waiter who seemed to know her way around the menu and was very knowledgeable on the wines, but the initial service and especially the drinks service were poor. Overall, the experience was at best mediocre. I shan't be coming back and I would not recommend Primrose.

Our first visit in over a year! Three of us: each had a different cocktail, and then shared a very nice Gambas al Ajillo, french fries, a cauliflower appetizer and a single order of fried chicken that left us with a take-home portion.
Be the first to ReplyGood Food, Less-Than-Accomodating Service
My friends and I traveled to visit this location due to it's great reviews and cool aesthetic. Due to COVID, all dining is outside (totally fine) and service is only through a pick-up window
I was really unimpressed with the service and/or attitude of the staff who didn't seem very eager or accommodating to new guests. and with gratuity already included on all checks (our table was for 4), it would have been nice to feel a little more welcome
The food itself was very good - a little pricey - but very good. the fried green tomatoes were my favorite.
While I had an OK visit, I probably won't be back again, unfortunately.
Charming French bistro
This charming French bistro provides an old-Europe ambiance, with great food and service. The feathery light fixtures above the high-top tables made me think I was looking up the skirt of a dancer at the Moulin Rouge! The menu and wine list are not exhaustive but well thought out; the classic French onion soup and steak frites alongside a wonderful charred squash salad and rabbit rilette. I can’t wait to dine again!
Be the first to ReplyHidden Gem...A MUST TRY (One of the best restaurants in DC)
I have nothing but good things to say about my experience at Primrose! We had a Friday night reservation and the place was packed. The ambiance was great and we were seated right away. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all the dishes and helped us navigate through the menu and made great recommendations. We ordered the french onion soup, the chicken liver pate and shrimp toast. All appetizers were amazing to say the least. The soup was not too salty, had the perfect umami flavor that came from the mushroom stock and perfectly melted cheese. One of the best onion soups I've had in awhile. The duck liver pate was so creamy and decadent and paired well with the crostini. The best dish of the three though was the shrimp toast. The name doesn't do it justice! It has a shrimp paste top with a donut sweet and savory crispy bottom. It is so hard to describe was SO SO good. One of the best dishes I've had in DC hands down. We shared a dry aged rib eye and it was easily enough the feed the both of us. The steak was perfectly cooked and I enjoyed the creamy mashed potatos and roasted maitake mushrooms. Everything was cooked to perfection. I cannot wait to come back here again; Primrose has easily become one of my favorite restaurants in DC!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious lunch!
We stopped in for a late lunch after walking through what seemed like most of DC! Tired and weary we were in for a treat! My husband had one of the best burgers he's ever had and I very much enjoyed the Korean Chicken Sandwich. The ONLY slight negative is that the ladies room could really use some attention. Out of three stalls, one was out of order, and one had a door knob that was ready to fall off at any moment. In fact, I was very hesitant to use it as I was afraid I might get stuck. That was a distinct departure from what I witnessed in the rest of the establishment so hopefully it will be addressed quickly.
Be the first to ReplyTomahawk Steak & Free Range Chicken!!
My daughter came to this new neighborhood bistro in the Catholic University neighborhood of Brookland and had an excellent meal so when Dad came visiting the whole family opted for a return trip, with three adults and twin toddler. Our reservations were for 5:30 pm when the restaurant opened and we were greeted warmly and the table was correctly set up (3 adult chairs; 2 boosters) - always a good first sign. Our order was very simple: a Tomahawk steak (something like a huge rib eye that come on a bone with a T-joint that resembles a tomahawk) whole free range chicken - both plates intended to feed the entire table. The large steak was $42 and the chicken $50) (the menu specified that these entrees were for two people, hence the price). So 5 of us at for $92 and the quality and taste of both the chicken and steak was fantastic! An excellent value! Their were side dishes included for both entrees. Service was friendly and the owner greeted us at the table. Locals need to put Primrose as their go-to neighborhood bistro
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding staff and food (and wine)
Extremely knowledgeable and helpful waiter. Excellent food. Delightful atmosphere.
3 of us shared a few appetizers, and I had an excellent glass of wine:
Of the two tartines, the spring vegetable version was better. The fava beans were crunchy, and the waiter's description that it was like a bite of spring was spot on. The fruit-de-mer tartine was quite nice, but the mussels were not flavorful enough to bring punch to an otherwise very good arrangement. The purple ninja radishes were tart, crispy and the mussel paste added a special twist to the dish. The rainbow carrot salad was wonderful.
The Domain Clavallon Chard wine (a red blend from Languedoc) was exceptional.
There is outdoor and indoor seating, we were seated outdoors. The restaurant was not crowded, so the sound level was very tolerable. My impression is that sound would be comfortable inside even if the restaurant was relatively full.
Our waiter was really exceptional. He took time to explain dishes, and made recommendations based on what he was hearing from us. During our meal, he was attentive but discreet.
The prices are reasonable for DC, and exceptional considering the quality of the food. Other restaurants that I've been to at this level of quality would be measurably more expensive.
This was my first visit here, though I've driven by the restaurant several times as I live nearby. I've seen it very crowded, but on this Wednesday evening at 8pm it was comfortably buzzing but quiet.
Fabulous Continental bistrofood

Do you go and enjoy it and see it for yourself. Primrose just won the best wine list in dc for 2019 family friendly with high chairs and changing tables.
Be the first to ReplyGreat neighborhood spot
We came to celebrate my birthday. I wanted good wines and small plates, and this fit the bill. Such a fun space and very good service. We had a sitter, but I want to come back with the toddler- saw nice high chairs and a changing table in one of the restrooms. The duck liver mousse and steak tartare were my favorites. Pot du creme is very rich- definitely share it with someone!
