Portlander Wellington Reviews from The Last Year
Nice restaurant if you are allowed to eat inside!
Staying in the Rydges and thought a steak in the lovely ambience of the restaurant would be nice. Upon asking for a single table in the more than half empty restaurant I was pointed to the pub menu and a bar stool by the ‘head guy.’ Upon asking for the proper restaurant menu I was again told to sit on a bar stool outside the restaurant. Proceeded to have an entree and a $50 steak on a bar stool. Not quite the experience one hopes for. Not even a serviette! I guess the guy ‘decides who’ gets to eat in HIS restaurant. Other staff good. Big letdown on the desk…….. Will have other dinners somewhere welcoming.
Service pathetic. Ordered few lamb items and it took more than 40 mins to get the order. Extremely poor service.

One of the Best Meals of the Trip
.For our last night in Wellington, we made reservations at this highly recommended restaurant and were not disappointed. Located in the Rydges Wellington Hotel, we entered its lobby and soon located the ground floor restaurant and were seated promptly. Throughout the meal the service would be excellent as we engaged with one of the waiters, a young American from the west coast. We started with a loaf of Ciabatta to eat along with the Wairiri Mozzarella appetizer (manuka honey confit butternut, compressed cucumber, spiced puffed rice, red wine vinegar reduction) and honestly, we could have made a meal of it that’s how good it was. There were drinks involved as well starting with the Montana Festival Block Chardonnay, a local Tualara Reptillian IPA and a Daiquiri, Pink Lady, and a White Lady, all good choices to begin the evening with. For dinner, we’d share a bottle of a North Canterbury Pinot Noir from 27 Seconds (100% of their profits go towards helping survivors of slavery), which was a perfect choice to accompany the entrees we had all selected. These were, the Handpicked Eye Fillet (55-day aged pasture fed in South Canterbury) with the pepper brandy sauce, a Handpicked Ribeye (55-day aged pasture fed in South Canterbury) with club mushroom sauce, the Slow Grilled Leg of Lamb (marinated with preserved lemon and garlic, cooked to medium and carved to order) and Marty the Rump and Rib Lamb Duo (grilled 10-hour sous vide rump and glazed slow roasted rib). We enjoyed a couple of sides as well, garlic mashed potatoes and cauliflower gratin. As would be the case with every meat-based meal we would enjoy In New Zealand and Australia, the quality and preparation were excellent with reasonable pricing an added bonus. As it was our last night on the north Island, we of course ordered dessert, the Elder Flower Panna Cotta and Sticky Date Pudding while Marty and I had one more drink apiece, the Taylors 10 year Tawny port for him and a Martell VSOP cognac for me. When we settled the tab, we also left a cash tip of 50NZ as the service was so good. The total then came to 539NZ ($350), less than $70 per person for a great meal that included many drinks and a bottle of wine.
Just a little off
I'll start with the good-great, the (head?) waiter was great, knowledgeable, very easy to understand, precise and the steak meal was of course fantastic. However... We were greeted brusquely by the Maître d' who appeared a little put out by our appearance, admittedly my partner and daughter were dressed to watch the nearby football immediately after the dinner so were warmly dressed, for Wellington, at 7Pm at the end of April: while I had shorts on to accommodate a knee brace, but were in no way scruffy or unkempt. Despite booking 24 hrs earlier and being on time we were told to stand "over there" while he found a table for us. We were taken to our table by a waiter who tried offering my 21 year old daughter the kids menu. Finally after dinner the Maître d' seemed to have no idea where anyone had been seated and would follow each diner to see where they had actually been seated - odd. So, some good, some great and some, just a little off...
The food and the ambiance were both wonderful.
We had our four kids with us and the kids' menu selections were great. At some other local spots it can tend not to be enough food, but these were good portions.
Great restaurant
Portlander is always good, had lunch there today 23/1 and must say staff are tops in presentation and service. Food was A1 and steak was cooked as I ordered (and I’m a fussy old curmudgeon). My wife’s dish was also great and we will return with friends. Cheers, Rod
A bit bi-polar
We ate in Portlander twice during our stay in Rydges Wellington. We had some good, less than good and bizarre experiences. Some of the food was delicious for example the burgers and the sticky date dessert, others were very bland (clam linguine and the fish of the day which was salmon that day). The bizarre came when we were considering ordering a steak and we were told that a 700 gr sirloin would take 70 minutes to cook! We asked to double-check with the chef and he said it could probably be done in 50 minutes. We understand the searing, finishing in the oven and resting, but 50-70 minutes for a steak is something we've never experienced in our lives and we've had a lot of steaks around the world. The restaurant was not full by any means.
Mystery cook?
What arrogance. The waiter explained they could not honor your cook request for your steak, instead you got it how the chef chose to prepare it. I’ve had plenty of chef meals and I’m fine trusting the chef generally, but at an expensive steakhouse you usually get your steak like you like it. I can’t think of any reason for this other than their convenience or chef arrogance. Regarding service, the bar staff and drinks were outstanding. We dined as a group, and service was horribly slow. Several considered leaving hungry, rather than continuing to wait, and most left before dessert. The steaks were good, not great, when served, mostly cooked rare to medium rare, albeit uneven. The side dishes were all terrific. So, and overall uneven experience, some very good, and some quite disappointing.
Casual steak house ambience.
Decent wine selection. Amazing ciabatta bread! However I was disappointed with the steak. We order the 28 days dry aged ribeye MEDIUM RARE. Ask the waiter three times to make sure it is not over cooked. The steak came out medium WELL. When we notified our waiter, the general manager attended our table to tell us WE "should've ordered it rare if we wanted medium rare". This is a first for me!! Ha!! Negative star for service.
Enjoyed our meal here very much.
All 6 of us , traveling from US had one of two lamb choices and felt that it was the best that we ever had. Came out medium rare and I was concerned because I always ask for lamb medium but it's just different here! Had a 2015 Penfolds Shiraz that was decanted and served by the Som expertly. Very unpretentious atmosphere. All service down under is slowwww but this place was still faster than most
A great event
I was lucky enough to get an invite to the Fine Wine Masterclass for wines from the Church Road Winery. It was a great event, the MC had a brilliant knowledge of the wines and really engaged with us all. The wines were superb and are well and truly on my go to list from now on. Well done to all involved.

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
