Perfect Saturday night
Superb dinner experience throughout. The welcome from the cost check and host team was really lovely, started our evening off perfectly. The atmosphere of the main dining area is buzzy and made for a perfect Saturday night. It is loud as other reviews comment but a great balance for us. We weren’t looking to be in quiet dining room. The mixed seafood starter was absolutely delicious, so fresh. I’d highly commend the olive oil cake for dessert. I’ve eaten this a few times in Italy and this was the real deal. For the standard of food quality and service here, we felt decent value for money was offered. In short, if you’re looking for outstanding Italian food with a slight twist on the classics, then this a good choice. We’d certainly come back on our next visit.
Be the first to ReplySophisticated dishes, delicious.
Sophisticated dishes, not quite traditionally italian, delicious. Our three course meal had a "branzino" that was nice and crisp.
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant. Good service.
Portale represents a wonderful offer within the complex NYC restaurant scene. It is Italian cuisine with a modern twist. Wine list is very extensive. Italian ones are awesome. We had a Brunello di Montalcino. Superb. If chef Portale will go down in history for anything, it would be the Risotto. The best I’ve ever tasted. Popette (meat balls) are an outstanding appetizer. Cheesecake is to die for. My review of 4 dots is due to some inconsistencies in service from some waiters. If you’re coming to NYC, give this one a try. It is worth it.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food - a bit pricey
After a looong day wandering Manhattan (11 miles walked in the rain and high humidity) we found this gem for dinner. It was recommended by our hotel and only a few blocks walk so we gave it a try. No reservations needed - we were seated immediately when we arrived at 8:15. The burrata salad appetizer was fresh and cool and hit the spot. My wife’s risotto with shrimp was creamy and perfectly done. And my spicy lobster sauce over pasta was excellent too - just the right amount of spice and nicely al dente pasta. One glass of wine, no dessert - our total was $150. Great food in a nice atmosphere, just a little pricey.

Wonderful dinner at Portale. The dining room was packed and as a two top were given a table near the server's station so a bit busy. We enjoyed the crudo di Tonto, pallette, agnolotti, risotto. The entrees were the real stand ours - branzino with confit cherry tomatoes, eggplant puree, olives and broccoli tabe and the ippoglosso (halibut with mushrooms, asparagus and potato puree. Finished the dinner with olive oil cake which was good not memorable. Highly recommend the cocktails- Vecchio Spritz and the Portale. Great service, good pacing and good food. Next time will ask for a table along the wall. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyPortales, my favorite restaurant in NY.
This is a fantastic restaurant. The food is outstanding, Happy hour they have creative drinks and exquisite food for very reasonable prices You can't go wrong here. the dinner offerings are just delicious. From the minute you walk into the restaurant you will be treated like family. This is my favorite place in NY and in my neighborhood. the staff is outstanding. I'm greeted with a smile the minute I walk in the door. Isn't that a nice way to be treated.
Be the first to ReplyA classy, upscale restaurant with friendly staff
As we were walking by, headed to our hotel, this spot with the large windows caught our eye. From the exterior it looked like our kind of place and we knew from the name, there would be great Italian food here. We were NOT disappointed! It was superb!

Great food, quality fresh ingredients. Music was not too loud. The crowd was people looking for good food not trying to impress. Service was great. We appreciated how they split in 2 plates the appetizer we wanted Only 2 negative: after desert the server did not come back or say goodbye, it felt weird to finish this great night trying to flag down someone else (we were thinking he was gone on a break so we waited) Food was very good although a little too salty (bred and 2 pasta dish)
Be the first to ReplyFun evening, good food.
Delicious food, good vibes. Not cheap, but worth it. Attentive wait staff. We would definitely return when next visiting the city.
Be the first to ReplyAn ‘OK ‘ experience despite good food.
It was classified an Ok experience, even though the food was excellent. You got rushed through the evening, from the start to the end. The service was Ok. The check came on the table without asking for it, we were not asked if we would like after dinner drinks after our Dessert, which we would have loved. So we paid and left, and had drinks else where.

Dined on a Saturday night at 8p. Excellent meal. We were seated exactly at the reservation time. Dining room and bar had a great vibe, but managed to not be so loud that you couldn't hear. Service was excellent throughout the meal, from our personable main server to the sommelier to a very attentive team clearing plates, refilling water, etc. Classic Italian approach to the menu; easy to share or order your own plates. Lots of tempting pastas, mains, etc. All food delicious. The cauliflower salad was superb, as were ricotta meatballs. Pappardelle with mushrooms was rich and earthy. Chicken was moist and beautifully presented. Excellent meal!

Don’t let their staff guide your dining experience. They will seek to maximize the bill and will not tell you if/when they are recommending exorbitant suggestions. I know it sounds silly but I want to trust my servers in restaurants but here if you don’t confirm the pricing of what you order you’ll be in for an unpleasant surprise. The staff here are only interested in having you order the most expensive items possible. Mind your wallet and choose carefully. If the sommelier is your guide, be sure to ask him about his recommendation. Buyer beware as they won’t be good but they will be costly.

My wife and I dined here for the first time this week and loved it. The atmosphere was perfect: energy in the room but easily able to talk. Whitney was a fabulous server. The food was excellent. We started w/ the burrata. Rather than coming w/ tomatoes, it came w/ pickled vegetables and prosciutto. We also ordered the loaf of brown bread which came warm w/ salted butter. Both excellent. Our entrees were a pasta dish and the branzino which we both enjoyed. We ended the evening with the donuts which were served w/ vanilla and chocolate dipping sauces which stole the show. Best I have ever eaten. Cost was $250 before tip which included $100 of wine. Wine by the glass was very expensive but good selections. We would return.

First the wait was wonderful at the bar. Great atmosphere. The staff were very cool. And the food was great. There seafood is fabulous. Their shrimp and risotto is fabulous. Just a wonderful end to our evening. From a art exhibition of a family member to Portale a great night.

I had the the Ravioli that was on the menu in September,, it was quite possibly the finest tasting meal ever. Five stars for sure!

We picked Portale based on the 2022 Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence and the menu seemed perfect for our one dinner in NYC on our way to France. We arrived for our reservation and had a short wait at the bar where we reviewed the wine list and menus and had our first chance interaction with Micheal Dolinski the wine director. I asked about the best Negroni and he suggested the Maserati which I have to agree was the best I have had. We also talked about Roero Arneis a favorite white from Piedmont as our plan was to have seafood. Our selection for appetizer the insalata pomodori which was perfectly balanced with the perfect combination of heirloom tomatoes, strawberries and ricotta salata. For our main courses we chose after consulting with Ben our competent and gracious server the Mafaldine with Maine lobster and Calabrian chili and the Branzino with broccoli rabe and eggplant purée. Both were delicious and paired perfectly with the 2020 Giovanni Almando Le Rive del Bricco suggested by Michael which was spot on. This was our first visit to Portale and we will most definitely return on our next stay in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food; warm and wonderful service; remembered my food allergy from a previous visit
We’ve had a wonderful time the two times we’ve been here, and we cannot wait to go back. Love the cocktails (though the delicious negroni Bianca doesnt taste like any negroni I’ve ever had). The pastas are exquisite and worth every penny (lumache and lobster pasta special). Adored the lamb special; the steak special, but also the duck and the branzino from the regular menu. The kale salad is perhaps the best in the city. We haven’t sampled any dessert yet but the bomboloni, but plan to do so eventually. The tables for two are tighter than the four tops, so try to go with friends. And the bread is delicious and worth the surcharge.

This is my second visit. The food here is wonderful. It’s fine dining but in an understated way. The restaurant has a neighborhood feel, not at all touristy, thank goodness. You can go in very dressed up, or dress casual. The decor is contemporary but comfortable. They have a very knowledgeable sommelier, he made fantastic recommendations for wines by the glass, did not push the most expensive wines which we appreciated, The pairings were spot on. I know very little about wine, other than that this absolutely complemented my meal. It was all about the flavor for what we were ordering. It was fun. The servers were very attentive without lingering, and the prices are very reasonable for the excellent quality of the food and presentation. My husband had the Bolognese which was a white sauce, unexpected, but divine. I had the risotto with asparagus and peas, sounds very simple, but it tasted like Spring. I’ve been dreaming about it. I would highly recommend Portale, and can’t wait to go back.

food was tasty but they came 3 times to ask us about tips. We were expecting the change so we could leave any tips we wanted and they came 3 times to ask us about the service and the food because we didn’t leave “enough” tips.

Again diverting from "vacation" reviews to opine on a local joint.. been trying to eat Alfred Portale's food since we lived closer to his last famous haunt down on 12th Street, but now that we live up the block from this newer establishment it was finally time. Best. Restaurant. Meal. In recent memory. Impeccable service, absolutely terrific food, spot-on sommelier who after fun discussion recommended the *least* expensive Piedmont wine.. this is fine dining in Chelsea, Manhattan at it's best. Fairly expensive, but highly HIGHLY recommended. Tip: bombolini for dessert. I'll be back just for those!

We ate dinner in a private room with a group of old friends. Everything about the experience was excellent. The room was great. Service was extraordinary...attentive but not obtrusive. The meal itself was quite wonderful...we had the choice of the whole menu, and as far as I can tell, everything everyone had was wonderful. What a great experience. Very hard to beat.

We arrived 10 minutes early with the restaurant half full (it was an early booking) and were told by a stern receptionist that we needed to wait in the bar - felt like being put in the naughty corner. Wait for what?
Finally were asked to 'Follow me' and were taken to the table. The waiter, Chris, was very friendly and knowledgeable. We finally felt welcome.
In short, the food was excellent - very tasty, and a nice modern take on Italian classics. We asked the sommelier to help us with the wine, but that didn't work out very well - it was above our initial budget, but was very inconsequential. He didn't check during the meal if we liked the wine. Wise.
Nice atmosphere in the restaurant overall, but nobody really below 50. I don't think we will be rushing back.
Truly splendid
My wife and I visited Portale for my wife's birthday. The food was better than splendid. The servers were attentive and charming. Portale is a grand place to celebrate and enjoy.
The food is even gorgeous.
A crowd Pleaser
Back again and again, another very good meal. The pastas are a standout. Serviced is good too. Good place to bring friends.
