VERY EXPENSIVE TOURIST TRAP
VERY EXPENSIVE TOURIST TRAP. There are much better places with MUCH better service and reasonable prices. A place TO AVOID
Excellent evening
During a mini break in Vienna my husband and I together with two friends had dinner here one evening. Two of the main courses consisted of beef with fried onions and another was a Mincemeat Schnitzel. The food was excellent as well as the wines. As Vienna is not a cheap city, this was certainly affordable. The staff too, were very friendly and kind in helping us choose our menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Vienna as you will not be disappointed. However, please make a reservation first.
When in Vienna …
If you’re in Vienna, you really can’t miss trying the authentic Austrian dishes at this restaurant. First of all, the ambiance is wonderful; we sat in the conservatory on a beautiful day with the roof open. The service is extremely professional, fast, and attentive. All the dishes were of high quality, fresh, and well-prepared. In short, there’s nothing to fault at this establishment, and it is absolutely recommended!
Excellent speedy check in to our table in this very well
Excellent speedy check in to our table in this very well appointed restaurant in Vienna. The best Wiener schnitzel I've had tasted for sure. However we don't get the friendly service we get in our home state comparing to restaurants of the same caliber.

Gabriel is amazing!!! He made our dinner the most enjoyable in All of Europe. You must make time to have the Tafelspitz. Absolutely one of the best meals I have ever had! Thank you Plachutta and THANK YOU Gabriel!

Totally high end traditional Austrian cuisine and atmosphere. We took the most affordable bottle of Austrian white wine and it was very good! The food -and the service were amazing.
Have not been to a restaurant with service worst than this
Have not been to a restaurant with service worst than this one. First they messed up on the reservation. Blamed our hotel first. Then hotel called and called and it turned out they overbooked and bumped our reservation. We waited around half of an hour, standing by the bar, for a table. Waiter was rude from the start to the end. We wanted to order sides for the beef soup and he kept on saying there's already vegetable in the soup. We ordered after finishing one portion and received the most appalling comment that "you are big". Forced to tip. We only tipped 8% which was the minimum shown on the credit card machine. Our credit card was literally throw back to us.
Excellent service and food.
I always love to come back. Bought the English book Viennese cuisine
This was an awesome experience.
Great service and classy. I highly recommend. We got the tafspitz of course and just got it for 1 to share. It was plenty for us. So good. Great value - I'd totally come back here. Thank you!
Came by on a trip to Vienna after seeing the tafelspitz
Came by on a trip to Vienna after seeing the tafelspitz featured. The restaurant is very nice and teeming with staff. Even at 9 or 10pm it was very crowded with most of the tables occupied. Service was very gruff but attentive and quick. Everything came out very quickly but we never felt rushed. The schnitzel was tasty and came with adequate lemon. It was great that it came with side sauces as well (including a very delicious horseradish applesauce). The tafelspitz came with great presentation and was a very healthy serving enough to split for two. Pricing was pretty expensive but not out of range of most restaurants in Vienna.
Didn't really want to get bread but each table gets it
Didn't really want to get bread but each table gets it anyway and charges for every person. Ordered schnitzel, beef goulash, and calf liver with onions. Gotta order the liver, so delicious! Did not have reservation was told we might have to wait at least thirty minutes; we waited less. Ordered still water but got sparkling instead. Got our food pretty quick.
If I could score this 10 out of 5, I would.
This was one of the dining experience of my life. The service was impressively attentive and fast. The staff and the manager are taking their role seriously. The outdoor sitting was very comfortable. They provided blankets. The food and the wine was amazing. One of my coworker from Germany told me that his parents will sometimes take a 4 hour train ride to go to this restaurant.
The worst restaurant in Vienna? Probably.
I mean, they charge you €4.80 for silverware. I've visited 28 countries and have never had a worse dining experience anywhere, including in the US. Especially not one that cost me €51. Maybe Plachutta was good once upon a time, but that's now a fairy tale: i.e. a nice story that isn't real. Where to start with how bad this place is, I don't even know. I started writing this before I even got my food. That's how bad it is. Let's start at the beginning. The hostess was your typical ice cold Austrian. (Obviously the concept of hospitality died when it arrived in Vienna. While this is a city-wide problem, not Plachutta specific, they are certainly making sure to keep the inhospitable Viennese tradition alive and well). My waiter asked how I was, so I asked how he was. He tells me he's sick. And sure enough, he's coughing all over the place. I have 7 more days left of my trip and I really don't want to get sick. He should not be at work. Or at the very least he should be wearing a mask. We all have a drawer of leftover masks from Covid - have some common courtesy buddy. I get stuck at a table right by the entrance which shouldn't even exist. I get blasted with cold air every time someone comes in and the waitstaff bump into my table pretty much every time they come to the computer that's right beside me to enter an order. Including the sick waiter who keeps coming over to the computer and coughing, literally a foot away from my head. They have five wines by the glass. I ordered the Blaufrankisch and it's disgusting. I've been here for four days and had several glasses of Blaufrankish elsewhere and I know how it's supposed to taste. This is worse than Two Buck Chuck. It's flavorless, it tastes like purple watery alcohol with that distinctive super cheap wine aftertaste. You know what I'm talking about. Look, I will drink mediocre wine and have. Many times. Also, I HATE complaining about things at restaurants. I was a waitress for YEARS in a big city and I understand what a thankless job it is. But this wine is undrinkable. I asked if they have any other wines and said the one I have is "disgusting." The waiter confirmed there were no other wine option and walked away. Um, really? I at least expected "can I get you something else?" So the food comes out and ok, the broth is pretty good, but very salty. The rest of the meal is foul. The texture of the meat is like overcooked roast beef. It has a bitter flavor and is so salty it's nearly inedible. The potatoes don't taste like potato anymore because they're basically all salt. At this point I'm trying to cut my losses so I asked if they could remove the couvert because I haven't - and won't - touch the bread basket. The waiter replies that he cannot because the €4.80 couvert is for silverware too. THEY. CHARGE. YOU. FOR. SILVERWARE. No other purportedly nice sit-down white-tablecloth restaurant in the world would dare charge you for silverware. But see my comment above about Vienna and hospitality. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They did at least take the disgusting wine off the bill. That doesn't make up for the rest of the horrible experience though. There are many other places you can get Tafelspitz in Vienna. Go to one of those. Don't waste your money in this tourist trap.
This is an upscale place with quality food.
The Tafelsoitz (boiled beef) is a piece of art in my opinion and the presentation and order of consumption is quite entertaining. The wait staff was a bit overwhelmed with the busy place but it was definitely an experience. The drinks were great as well and don't miss the desserts.
Average restaurant with a service attitude
The Tafelspitz ( beef broth) is too salty. Not as good as the one at Figlmüller Rest. The spinach ( too salty) is extra and the horse radish is also extra. Quite expensive extra. The horse radish ( mixed with cream or potatoe) is not good compared to Figlmuller which is fine and very fresh. and it is free at Figlmuller. Service at Plachutta is better for locals as we saw waiters serve the locals whereas they just put the plates on our table. They also try to sit us at a table next to the cash machine whereas there were many better tables still available. Figlmuller is better and less expensive.
Bad experience
Dont go there expecting having a good experience , service is reallyyyyy bad , food is ok Waiter was rude because we did not give enougth tips according to his expectations and compaining working too much We come here to have a great time not to have this type of behaviors You should pay more attention to your recruitments
This is the best place in Austria for boiled beef out of 3
This is the best place in Austria for boiled beef out of 3 tried. The presentation and flavor was a cut above. All of the food was very good. The restaurant is very popular, noisy and the servers knowledgeable if a little overwhelmed.
I Dream of Tafelspitz
Don’t leave Vienna without trying Tafelspitz here. The broth is so flavorful and the beef is so tender. Service was top notch and the outdoor seating very nice.
Had lunch at Plachutta today.
.. The good: outdoor seating is really nice, service is friendly enough, food came out quickly, and food is tasty for the most part. The not-so-good: prices are ridiculously high (this seems like an understatement). As if this isn't bad enough they charge a nearly 5 euro cover fee per person for stale bread and table service. And then they have a note on their receipt that the service charge is not included. Bottom line: prices are too high to consider returning, especially when there are way better restaurants in Vienna.
Recommend to make reservation.
We were lucky and got a table around 6pm. Don't risk it, particularly if you are short on time. This is a must in Vienna. Ambiance is a mix of local families and tourists, but this is not the typical touristy place. Service was fast, not too friendly but expedient. Place is crowded, and they gave us a table w/o reservation so will give them a pass on that. On to food. You will be tempted to go for Schnitzel and I will not judge. It is really good: tender, crispy, buttery. Go with potato salad or cucumber salad so you have something fresh in your palate to balance the Schnitzel. Now, locals share Tafelspitz and you should too. Do a bit of research and pick the meat that best suits you. Procedure : start with the soup, they will bring a big bowl to share and individual bowls for each person. They should serve you the first scoops. I had 'pancakes' (thin slices of thin bread) as a bed for the soup. Delicious! Then, go for the bone marrow. Yes, just do it please. I have eaten it since i was a kid. They do a good job here. Take the bone marrow out of the bowl and spread it on your bread. It is a perfect companion to the soup. The meat was a bit underwhelming, i tried the mint sauce and made it more interesting, with more texture. We had to skip dessert, as this was plenty! Excellent dinner for a cold winter night. It will get you satisfied, nurtured and ready for a nice walk in one of the Economist's most livable cities in the world. Go on enjoy!

My hotel made my reservation when I arrived at the restaurant they didn't have it, I was standing next to him when he spoke to them I have to assume it was the restaurant that screwed up, They did seat me at a loud table by the front reception desk. That looked as of were just thrown there. Kinda the kids table at Thanksgiving. Was highly recommend by several people so I stayed otherwise would have left

This restaurant is one of my favorites in Vienna and I have been bringing my business partners there for the last 15 years. The last time I came with a colleague, I was very uncomfortable, first, because of the unpolite staff and the amount of Tafelspitz that was served (and charged) for two people, which was actually for one. When I complained about the quantity, the waiter told me that there was a little more soup and potatoes, but I said that's why less meat and spinach. He probably didn't know that I was in that restaurant very often and that I knew what the portions were usually. Moreover, it is one of the more expensive restaurants in the city. Last visit left a bitter impression, I am very disappointed.

It's rare that after all these years of eating around the world I encounter something truly novel to my palate. I can totally see why Tafelspitz was a favorite dish of Emperor Franz Josef, since it's delicious and has many different phases from the same pot. I think the first phase with that delicious broth was my favorite. It had the long simmered richness of beef pho, minus the Asian spices. Perhaps the best beef broth I've ever had. Instead of noodles, there were thin pancake slices that worked well. I also like the thinly sliced and tender veggies in the mix. The second phase was truly indulgent where you scoop out a marrow bone, spread a heaping portion of bone marrow on toast and then season with salt and pepper. Bone marrow as an appetizer is not new to me, but fishing the bone out of the soup that it had flavored was new and exciting. The final phase felt like prime rib dinner service, but with pot roast as the meat. I liked the presentation of fried potato shreds, blended spinach, apple horseradish sauce and creamy chives sauce. The meat chunks did indeed taste like their "boiled beef" name translation, so felt like common pot roast. But with memories of the previous two phases, it was still elevated in my mind. The place also felt kinda fancy with table clothes and formally dressed waiters. While we had it as a late lunch after a long day of tourist trekking, many other people seemed to be having fancy business lunches to impress their business guests.

After much research, I had this Plachutta location selected to get my first Viennese meal. As I was waiting for my luggage at the airport, I saw video advertisements for Plachutta above the conveyor belts. I thought uh oh, this place I'm planning on going for dinner has tourist trap written all over it. But I did read this particular location seems to be more popular with locals and better than the other ones. Perhaps because of the heavy tourist advertising, my expectations were low...but everything was outstanding. And the Wiener Schnitzel left me searching for one as good on the rest of my trip, and I never could. Chanterelle mushroom terrine appetizer - 4 stars. This was a very nice beginning that had a richness to it, along with some greens. Perhaps a little crunchy something would have been nice to spread it on. Tafelspitz- 5 stars. The reason for coming really, as it's a fun word to say, and one of the most popular Viennese dishes. Kind of like an Asian Hot pot, but eaten in reverse, first the broth is served and then the sliced tender beef is plated with crispy potatoes. Also enjoyed the horseradish applesauce side that you eat with the beef. We ordered this for 2, but along with other dishes ate it family style for 4. Wiener Schnitzel - 5 stars. Like I said best I had while in Vienna. Nice and crispy on the outside, tender savory veal on the inside. The vinegar like room temperature potato salad is very important to enhance each bite as is a light squeeze of lemon. Goulash and dumplings - 5 stars. We had them served separately so we could share easily. Very tasty. I would have been happy to just eat this as my main dish as well. My tourist fears were put to rest at this location...and I highly recommend Plachutta as a must do, to anyone coming to Vienna.

This place had been recommended by a fellow American who knows Vienna quite well, and it exceeded our expectations. We went with a group of friends, who all shared different versions of Tafelspitz, a beef dish served in the most exquisite broth! Anyone who goes there should try this particular dish! The atmosphere was jovial, the servers attentive and in good humor. Next time we go to Vienna, I know we will return there!

Love this place! I have been here years ago while on business trip and now so glad to visit with family. The best wiener schnitzel and really enjoyed the veal goulash and roasted calf liver! I appreciated information on allergens according to Codex recommendations. Overall service was great!

You go to Plachutta for their Tafelspitz , which is the best according to Viennese friends . Incredibly nice and helpful staff who taught us step by step how to eat the meal properly they're extremely popular and of course busy so you need to make reservations in advance
Not up to the hype - way overrated.
Heard so much about this place before going - and left us underwhelmed. The service was rushed, unfriendly and not very helpful (the specialty Tafelspitz has some nuances to serving this shared meal - zero explanation offered - burnt fingers from the hot plate). Four of us spent over 400 Euro (with a couple of drinks each). Interesting to see some of the pictures of famous people who passed through - but really do not get the hype, We went to numerous other restaurants during our stay (some comparable such as Lugeck, some smaller family owned (which were by far the most enjoyable)), and Plachutta was our lest favorite and by a long shot, most expensive. One and done!
Amazing Tafelspitz
We had been trying to find the best Tafelspitz in Vienna, and after some good (but not outstanding) tries we found the very best. You would probably want to make a reservation, this is one of the most popular Viennese restaurants, with its fame well deserved. The Tafelspitz was superb, starting with the very tasty soup. Yes, you actually eat the soup here (in another famous restaurant we were very much looked down upon when suggesting) and it comes with bone marrow on toast – delicious. The meat was tender, juicy and tasty, and the spinach extraordinary. The Grüner Veltiner was good. Service was polite and efficient. We had an excellent lunch! Shall most certainly return for more.

Outstanding cuisine with excellent service
It’s an outstanding restaurant quite near to the centre. The service is amazing. They gave us a really nice treatment. The stuff is very friendly and polite. The quality of food is amazing. They serve a typical Austrian food. My family and I rate us with five stars
Once was enough. Barely average.
We found the service was slow and uncaring. We had a reservation, for which they seemed unprepared, and made us wait at the bar, which has no chairs and is like a runway crowded with the waiters hustling drink orders. It's also the passageway for the service staff. We had no option but to stand there, which embarrassed me since I had a guest, and we just had to wait to get the attention of the waiter. Food was average, OK, nothing special, virtually all meat dishes. For me, having invited a guest there (for the first time) the experience was overpriced, overrated, and not a good value at all, considering we had no starters, just a main course with one drink each, and one desert each for a total of 150 Euros. I wish I knew how to write "buyer beware" in German. I would never recommend this establishment, will never go back, and adamantly warn others, especially visitors and travelers, to stay away. There any very many other BETTER restaurants which offer a better value and a better experience in Vienna. Would never recommend and will never come back.
This was one of the most disappointing and embarrassing
This was one of the most disappointing and embarrassing interactions we've ever had. We brought a group of international business people here for a dinner during our stop in Wien. After confirming our reservation by phone, we showed up only to be turned away and told we did not have a "confirmation code". This was a detail that was left out during our call with the restaurant and not something we knew to look for. As we tried to discuss our situation, we were aggressively interrupted by the rude and angry hostess. We were welcomed at Restaurant Meissl & Schadn Wien which is a short trip down the street and a fantastic meal. We were fortunate to have a contact that got us into Meissl & Schadn on short notice. Shame on Plachutta for their disrespectful and rude behavior. My strongest recommendation is to avoid this place. There are many wonderful restaurants in Wien with great cuisine and who treat people with dignity and respect.

Such a lovely meal here, be sure to make a reservation in advance as it seemed walking in was quite difficult.I ordered the infamous Tafelspitz, a typical Austrian beef stew served with creamed spinach and hash browned potatoes. It was so delicious, although they didn't explain how to properly eat it a diagram was provided. First you drink the soup, then you spread the bone marrow onto the bread, then you take the beef out and eat it alongside your spinach and potatoes. I added pancakes to the stew which served as a kind of noodle. I would definitely come back here and recommend sharing the stew as it's a large portion!
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.
I have always enjoyed eating at Plachutta and have dined at several of their locations. (I prefer the "gasthaus zur opera" while my daughter in law prefers this one.)As always, the food was great. The Wiener Schnitzel was perfect - a large portion, perfectly seasoned and breaded and tender; and the accompanying potato salad was the perfect pairing. The Tafelspitz (an Austrian dish of boiled beef) was great - the broth rich and tasty and the beef tender. The beef tips over noodles was not quite up to the others; the beef was not tender, but still tasty. Most of our (large) party were too full for desert, but the crème brûlée was to die for good. The "house brew" Ottakringer Beer is my favorite - and didn't disappoint. There is a good selection of wines as well. So, with all of that "good," what was bad? The service! Vienna restaurants are not known for great service, but this was outright horrible. The manager didn't seat us for 15 minutes notwithstanding an advance reservation for a large table - which was set and open the entire time. Our waiter took the drink order and then forgot to bring the drinks and the head server took forever to take our order. So, after dinner took too long - entirely their fault, we got the "bums rush" to leave. Nein, nein, nein!
Best to avoid this trap.
So sad because it was highly rated but clearly not deserving. Boiled meat was of low quality and stringy. Side dishes were good. We had reservations but were informed that gave us exactly 1 hour to eat and leave regardless of the speed of service or how many courses we may want. The focus was to get us in & out as quickly as possible. They said it was because they were going to be busy but the entire time we were there lots of empty tables surrounded us. We skipped ordering an additional round of drinks and dessert because the place was so unwelcoming. We were so excited to have traditional Austrian cuisine but there are certainly other places that will welcome you cheerfully.
