Underwhelmed by lack of service
Michelin it maybe but service was distinctly lacking. No greeting on arrival just menus dumped on the bar, find yourself a seat. Here some canapés, oh are there any allergies? Let me just walk your cqnapes back to the kitchen and let them go cold whilst I check what's in them. Once at the table ... Would you expect to pour your own wine in a Michelin establishment let alone any decent restaurant? Check back on starters non existent, good job the food tasted good. Mains were good, but again service lacking, lovely bottle of pinotage, left on the table for us to deal with ourselves. There was at least a check back this time but the most basic of closed questions from the service team, when you'd expect an open question to stimulate the interaction with your guests. Overall an extremely under whelming experience.

We went to the Pipe & Glass for a silver wedding anniversary lunch and had a wonderful time. The staff were so pleasant and very efficient. The food was absolutely amazing. In fact we couldn’t fault any part of our dining experience. We will definitely be going back again and highly recommend it.

Took my partner for an overnight stay & dining for his birthday…. The accommodation was excellent, large en-suite room , furnishings & fittings were beautiful… we had a warm welcome on arrival & helped with luggage to our room ….. The evening meal was amazing from starters through to dessert & the recommended wine complemented the meal well …. The service throughout was very good & the morning breakfast just finished the experience off with plenty of choice …..Would highly recommend …

Amazing service, outstanding food. Highly highly recommend!!! Ryan our server works so hard and made sure we have everything we needed and constantly checked we were happy. Our wine was poured for us as and when our glass was low. Ryan was impeccable and definitely a valued member of staff.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great place to eat
Been before and the food is just as good as last time. Really liked they’d added new seasonal dishes to the menu but client some of the classics like the stick toffee pudding

We often go to the Pipe and Glass, the food and service is always excellent. Unfortunately on this occasion the service was somewhat wanting. Maybe because it was a very busy Sunday Lunchtime. However, if Customers are neglected and have to wait while all around come and go and receive prompt service, their experience will be tarnished by that. - Very disappointing.

Very nice restaurant with great quality food at very reasonable prices. Very warm welcome by the staff, drinks in the bar before we were lead to our table. Food came very quick and felt rather rushed by staff who were removing unused wine glasses in middle of our main course. Found this not very professional, staff attentive and keen for us to have more wine despite us telling previous waitress we didn’t need anymore. Overall a good experience.

We have been here a few times now and never fails to impress! Delicious food and impeccable service! Wonderful fine dining, can’t fault it!!!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, great ambience
This is a lovely restaurant which offers a calm and enjoyable environment along with delicious food. Despite the relatively high price, we had a lovely meal and would definitely return for special occasions.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Mother's Day Lunch!
We are so incredibly lucky to live in close proximity to 'The Pipe And Glass' and are able to enjoy its fabulous hospitality on a very regular basis. Today we visited for a Mothers Day Sunday Lunch with two lovely friends. The food was, as always, simply outstanding. From the Waldorf Crab Tartlet, Salt Beef Hash Cake and Pate starters to the sublime Roast Beef and the Monkfish starter which we had as a main dish... it all was absolutely incredible. As always whilst the food is always amazing, equally the service from all the Pipe and Glass team is second to none. Thank you Pipe and Glass - we had a wonderful Mothers Day topped off with our wonderful complimentary Chocolate Truffle treats!

Our first time here and our first time at a michelin star restaurant and can honestly say we were not disappointed. The staff were so attentive and happy to advise and guide us the food well were do we start was awesome everything was nicely presented hot and tasty. We both had the Sunday beef dinner it was more like having a steak and not at all put out when we asked for any leftovers for our dog. Desert the 5 reasons to love chocolate beat me but wow I think I've had my chocolate fix for a month now it beat me but what I could manage was delicious. I will be going again as we were pleasantly surprised by the bill too and want to share this gem with friends

We've eaten here several times, and it's always been lovely. Sunday lunch is amazing. We went recently and it wasn't quite as good as previous visits. But would still go back.

Took my mum for an early Mother’s Day dinner and the whole experience was wonderful. My mum described it as a food sensation. The staff and service were superb and we were made to feel so welcome. A beautiful location and looking forward to returning.

Always feels a real treat visiting P&G, therefore saved for special occasions! Visited last night and everything was perfect! Food, setting & service! Can’t wait for the next visit!

Excellent Sunday Dinner. We both had a starter and main. Absolutely faultless! Beautiful location and exceptional service. We look forward to visiting again soon!

Thank you Pipe and Glass and especially Louise for making our visit so special. We booked the Hotham room for a special birthday treat for my Wife. From start to finish everything was superb. From the relaxed start with pre lunch drinks in the library to the exceptional food served in the Hotham room. You catered for our needs with ease making sure dietary requirements of the party were met when needed. This particular celebration was delayed by three years due to Covid and then rearranging a suitable date so we could all get together. All with no problems from the Pipe and Glass. Highly recommend booking the Hotham room for that special occasion.

For all sorts of reasons it’s a few years since we last visited the Pipe and Glass, happy to say that the standards are still as good as ever. Our lunch was excellent in all respects, super food, well served in a nice environment, there’s really nothing more to say, a great place to eat.

Exceptional customer service by the staff which didn’t feel rushed. Food was delicious and every course was a treat. Will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplySadly didn’t live up to expectations
For a Michelin star restaurant we expected more. Annoyingly on arrival the nice sitting area was full so we had to go in the bar. We asked questions about certain items on the menu which the member of staff didn’t know much about. The prawn cocktail was huge and looked ridiculous. The Barnsley chop wasn’t hot, luke warm at best. The Rib eye was awfully fatty. The other dishes we ate were all pretty good. I always expect a waiter to make a note of each guest and their specific order, but when the food came out they asked us which dish was for who. Sorry to say but it lacked high service, and was more like a regular pub restaurant.

We weren't able to book a restaurant table but elected to arrive early one Saturday evening to see if we could find a table in the bar. We were fortunate and were seated at a great table. Menu choices amazing and the standard of the food was exceptional. We loved our visit and it has made us want to come and stay, so enticing was it. A fabulous car park too, such a bonus when an establishment has thought about parking and made it work. Great stuff, thank you.
Be the first to ReplyA nice meal in the heart of Yorkshire!
We were greeted and shown to our table which had a lovely atmosphere. Staff were friendly. I ordered the monkfish scampi for starters which was lovely, however it needed a little salt to bring the flavours alive. For mains my partner and I had the deer which was out of this world amazing!!! Highly recommend this dish. I ordered mine with some skinny chips which unfortunately arrived cold so I sent them back. For dessert we had '5 reasons to love chocolate' which was a great experience. The creme brulee was our favourite part of it. My partner found a pastry bristle brush in one part of the dessert so we told staff and they were apologetic. Overall a lovely meal in a beautiful part of Yorkshire!
Be the first to Replywonderful food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere
consistently good good - lovely atmosphere which is busy but still enjoyable - the food quality and portions were outstanding. A friendly reception made this a wonderful evening meal - highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyGood but not Great.
Nice food well cooked & presented but for me lacked a WOW factor. Served on tepid plates which doesn’t help.
Accommodation was very good ; great space.
Excellent service all round.
Great pity
We have been regulars at the Pipe and Glass for over 10 years and have always rated it an emphatic 5. Our last two visits were unfortunately disappointing. The place really seems to have lost its mojo post pandemic. The first of these visits was shortly after the reopening. We put the rather lukewarm experience down to a post covid glitch, but things were little better last week. The usual staff were conspicuous by their absence and the service lacked its normal polish. The menu was limited and frankly boring. The ‘specials’ on the menu were anything but. It may have been rather different in the execution, but sausages and bubble and squeak is something we knock up for a mid week supper.
The food we had was well cooked and tasty…but whole experience was a bit flat and at the prices charged it wasn’t value for money. Pity.
The First and Last Visit
We have always wanted to try the Pipe and Glass especially with it being a Michelin Star restaurant and loving good food. The booking process was easy (although the best option meant waiting 3 months) for the accommodation and a table.
On arrival, we had very friendly service and were guided to the accommodation which is a 5-10 min walk from the restaurant. The lambing sheds are beautifully appointed with all the amenities you could ask for, so the accommodation was spot on.
On then to the restaurant, nice greeting, very friendly and all told a nice open space with large tables, so this was looking hopeful. On the the menu, which was a bit of a disappointment, with a limited selection of items in comparison to other restaurants. We tried the crab salad £14.50 (which comes in a small glass) and oysters which were £3 each and one slice of bread each at £3.75. The starters were nice but realistically a little pricey for what you actually get
The mains again had a limited selection, with deer at £32 and fillet steak £36 chosen, with a single side of veg at £4.50. The deer tasted nice, however the fillet was slightly cool, slightly bland and nothing special unfortunately. At over £70 fro two meals, this was not quality or value for money. At no point did anyone bother coming back to check the food was satisfactory. We passed on desserts which again had a small selection of items and instead decided to retire to the accommodation. We sat waiting to grab a waiter to get the bill, but after 10 minutes we were told this would just be added to the room and we could go any time.
Visiting the restrooms, the ladies toilet seats appeared to be hanging off, in the gents, the tap water was freezing and all but a tiny trickle of water, which didn’t inspire you to wash your hands.
On then to better things and breakfast in the morning which had been selected the night before and some of the selection had been ignored, unfortunately again the bacon and sausage were slightly cool, with stacks of salt on the bacon, mushroom (yes one mushroom) and scrambled egg, far too much salt, this really needs to be reduced for health reasons.
In closing while the accommodation is really nice, the food was less than expected and really not Michelin Star quality. To be honest you could get the same quality of food in almost any gastro pub in the area. Based on this we couldn’t recommend the restaurant and unfortunately will not be returning.
