Don't go if you aren't Italian unless you want to be
Don't go if you aren't Italian unless you want to be treated as a second class guest. The food was very good but the service was horrible. Giuseppe, the maitre d', was rude and totally not professional. Another guest got up from her table and was having a cell phone call for several minutes a foot from where I was sitting. We asked if he could ask her to take her call in another place and he said no, he could not do anything about it. I asked her if she could continue her call somewhere else, she immediately apologized and finished her call in the lobby. Giuseppe was rude and unfriendly from that point forward.
Be the first to ReplyThis is easily the best 3 star Michelin restaurant and most
This is easily the best 3 star Michelin restaurant and most extraordinary culinary experience of my ENTIRE LIFE! Let's start with the ambiance. This is a fairly intimate fine dining establishment that intentionally seats between 4-6 tables at a time. The overall noise level is quiet and there were approximately 5 different waiters that served my table alone! The waiters actually payed attention to and observed my facial expressions/gestures in response to the food and gave me some extra servings of wine (on the house) in response to my reactions. There was a sommelier who generously explained to us the history and origin of each of the Barolo wines that we had for the night. Now onto the food- we did the If you get the chance to dine at this fine establishment, I highly recommend the Barolo menu option, which includes 6 wine pairings (with May be accompanied by some potential extra generous servings from the chef himself).
Be the first to ReplyIt was a good experience but very pricey.
We had the Barolo Tasting Menu and it was fine, nothing to write home about. Here are some of the dishes we had:- The Aperitif of Turin- Winegrover's Salad- L'Albese- Snails and Polenta- Risotto Rooibos- Cardoncello Mushroom- Podolica- Pumpkin Seeds and Malghesino- Profiteroles- Cavour Biscuit & Zabaione

Our expectations were high and the chef and staff met them. Very creative combinations in the menu, exceptional creativity in presentation, and, the wine selections were spot on. It comes at a price but it met our expectations.
Be the first to ReplyFor my first Italy trip, there are only two star
For my first Italy trip, there are only two star restaurants I wanted to try, one in Alba and one in Modena. Once I have my flight booked, it's not too difficult to get a reservation at Piazza Duomo, although I still booked it as soon as the reservation opened. Dining at PB was more of a fun experience than a wow experience. Each course came in multiple small dishes that offered quite a visual. It was fun to eat from each plate/bowl. Food was tasty though I felt it emphasized more on the freshness of the ingredients than trying to wow the customers on the tasting level. The restaurant is located across from the right SIDE of the Cathedral in the main square in an alley way. It's easily missed so look carefully.
Be the first to ReplyThis Michelin three star is worth a visit.
First of all, the number of amuse bouche dishes was incredible. I counted about 10, at the beginning of the meal and four at the end of the meal. The only disappointment was the 100 leaf salad. They were almost better than what came later, though that was good as well. Service is excellent. Lots of space between tables. There are two rooms, one with three tables. The door to the restaurant is not on the square but on a side street
Be the first to ReplyWe've dined at a few 3 Michelin starred restaurants and
We've dined at a few 3 Michelin starred restaurants and they're always a lot of fun, so when vacationing in Northern Italy, we made reservations to dine at Piazza Duomo.Located in the birthplace of Barolo, Piazza Duomo has a super extensive wine list. Like children in a candy store, we could not decide which wine to have with dinner. We finally decided on a bottle of Ceretto to pair with the 9 course tasting menu. There were 9 courses to La Degustazione, but before the meal even began, our server brought us an amuse bouche course comprised of several little plates, that wasn't even part of the 9 course tasting. The most memorable part of the amuse bouche was this mini cup of steamed egg, that was warm and delicious and left us wanting more.Next, was The beginning - this was a collection of 8 little plates, each with something different and all to be eaten in one bite. They were all delicious and cool.Salad 21...31...41...51 - this course was served with a green envelope/card, entailing all 51 ingredients used in the salad. This salad started with 21 ingredients years back, but the Chef has been adding more and more to it, arriving at the current 51 ingredients. Unlike your typical salad, this salad has ingredients you've never heard before and was pretty fun to eat.Scallops, Sea Urchins and Pecorino - thinly sliced scallops laid atop a sea urchin and pecorino cheese sauce, with some green mustards and some leaves strewn across the plate. Codfish - 3 large chunks of cod, underneath it, a pumpkin sauce. It was also served with, are you ready for it? Another mini cup of steamed egg! This one had dots of sea urchin cream on the surface. We just can't get enough of it. Fassona Garibaldi - A carpaccio made from the local cattle with a sauce served over it. A nod to the typical Northern Italian fare of braised beef in the local wine sauce.Potato Cream, Lapsa Souchong - One of two courses in the tasting menu where you had the option of adding the white truffle to it, so we did, and it complemented the soup pretty nicely. Risotto Piedmonte - the risotto had been ladled flat onto a flat wavy plate, dusted with a brown powder prior before being put into the oven and baked. A pretty refreshing and innovative presentation and quite tasty too!Lamb and Chamomile - lamb topped with some vegetables and a little flower. Under the lamb was a brown sauce and little dots made with chamomile. An interesting dish, but the chamomile tasted a little herbal and medicinal. Gourmandise - this last course was served with what resembled a chocolate covered pretzel stick, but was super moist and soft, like a bread pudding, drizzled with chocolate and probably gianduja.Perhaps that wasn't the end of it, as more food were being brought out! This must be dessert dessert then. The waiters placed chocolate truffle balls, a Piedmontese cake, two large dates that were very sweet, two more pieces of chocolates, two mini cups of sorbet, two tiny bottles of milk and two individual plates of Piedmontese treats in front of my husband and I. At the end of the meal, we were presented with a little gift bag from the chef! Inside the gift bag, there was a little envelope of seeds you can plant, and a bottle of hazelnut oil!
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant is located at the heart of the city right by
The restaurant is located at the heart of the city right by the Piazza Duomo, owned by the local wine powerhouse Ceretto. Michelin starred (3), reservation is highly recommended, we made ours one month ahead. It was our last day in Piedmont, and the reservation was for lunch. Even with the help of google map, the entrance was still a bit tricky to find. The restaurant occupied the second floor of the building and the entrance is not located from the Piazza, rather, off a side street. The door is locked and you have to use the intercom to call the reception and then be buzzed in.The restaurant is beautifully decorated, in pink color with wall art, staff is impeccable and attentive. Big book wine list that can give you a concussion if the waiter missed the table and landed it on your head. If you have a window seat, you have the view of the Piazza bellow, the inside seats have a gorgeous view of the Duomo, nice ambience. There are a few set menus choices, the good thing is they do not mandate all parties have to order the exact same set, you are also allowed to order a la cart. Knowing the set menu would demand a serious stretch of time and we had to check in at our next location by Lake Maggiore before 6:00 pm, we opted for the a la carte option and the sommelier recommended an excellent Barolo that can be ordered by the glass. The cooking is definitely in fusion style, there are quite a bit of Japanese ingredients being introduced and the dishes are delicious. We were particularly impressed with the micro vegetables salad, which is the signature dish. You will be presented with a tri-folded card first, when you open it, the card listed over 100 micro vegetables that goes into the salad. The dressing is made with Japanese styled dashi. The dish is presented in a glass bowl with a separate dish under the bowl which has holes in the bottom. After you finish the delicious salad, you are encouraged to also drink the dashi dressing. We had ordered a gelato dessert that is made with a particular plant from the mint family, exquisite texture with complex flavor and just the right amount of sweetness. It was glorious. Highly recommend reserving more time to either lunch or dine here.
Be the first to ReplyI've been to a handful of two-to three-star Michelin star
I've been to a handful of two-to three-star Michelin star restaurants worldwide and Piazza Duomo is currently my favorite. They had a few set menus that you can choose from as well as a la carte. They're also very accommodating to food allergies as well as the type of food that you do not prefer when it comes to the tasting menu. The servers were very tentative and explained each of the dishes really well. One of the workers even gave us a quick tour of the restaurant! The presentation and taste of the dishes were excellent. I loved being surprised by what I ate because the taste and texture were not what I expected. My favorite dish was probably the salad. Never in my life have I tried so many wild flowers or imagined how well they go together. They also provided complimentary appetizers and dessert which I haven't seen at other restaurants. The one thing that I didn't like was that they charged for bottled water. This is a three star Michelin restaurant. The least they could do is provide water at no cost. Other than that, it was a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin 3 star rating and #15 on the best restaurant list
Michelin 3 star rating and #15 on the best restaurant list for 2018. Without a doubt, this place has a lot of hype and with that comes a lot of expectations. I was thrilled I could get a reservation and didn't mind the $100 cab ride from a neighboring town just to get the opportunity to eat here. I'll admit that it was good but to my dismay, it just wasn't THAT good. I had much better experiences at Alinea, Restaurant at Meadowood, French Laundry, Libreje's, Tickets, Joel Robuchon and Grace (just to name a few that would be on par with this place). True, the food was colorful, artistic and inventive but not innovative in a sense where a single bite changes your perception of food. I had the tasting menu and there were some interesting dishes (like the famous 100+ element salad) but in the end a true dining experience is more than just some colorful dishes. And this place fell short in a few important ways. First, the dining room. Yes, it's small, it's pink and it looks whimsical in the pictures but it just plain sucks in my opinion. The acoustics don't allow for more than 2 conversations at a time and I couldn't hear any of the descriptions of the food when the waiter was describing them to us. Also, it got hot. Really hot. Like unbearably hot. Nothing like sweating your ass off while you are trying to enjoy a $500 pp meal. One of the neighboring tables took it upon themselves to open a window and it was the best thing that happened all night. On that note, the service was also subpar for a restaurant of this caliber. Stuffy and offputting I can deal with, but to not notice that more than half of the clients have sweaty pits and are struggling to stay comfortable lacks insight to the very nature of their job. Also, given the numerous plates served from amuse bouche through the tasting menu, there was a constant stream of people coming over your shoulder to grab an empty dish. This place seemed to have so much service that you couldn't relax and just enjoy your meal without somebody swooping in. It made for a disjointed and uncoordinated experience. They could take a lesson from Robuchon in Vegas, where they serve dishes in sets of threes, so you can enjoy the food in a predictable sequence. Or perhaps, they can visit Libreje's; where a maitre d can helps coordinate pacing and service of the meal. Also, we asked for still water and they brought sparkling. So, I asked them to change it. No problem - but they charged us for the sparkling water. Not a big issue to pay when you consider the total bill (I didn't make a fuss), but also not cool to make the customer pay for your error. Finally, the bread. Yes, the bread. Italian bread can knock your socks off and can be the perfect mop for any sauce. Yet, this place missed the mark again. Hazelnut rolls were dry and hard. The white and whole wheat was also uninspired. So, I left them alone and it seamed a shame to eat an Italian meal without the bread. On a positive note, I did enjoy the wine pairing. They have 6 different wine pairing options and that is a great way to do it. Also, we left with a parting gift bag, with the menu and some oil. This seams to be customary in such an establishment, so again, nothing revolutionary here. However, Chef Crippa was there to say goodbye, which was a pleasant gesture, one that I truly respect.
Be the first to ReplyRemarkable three star Michelin restaurant in the heart of
Remarkable three star Michelin restaurant in the heart of Alba. The chef is incredibly creative. We started eating lunch at 12:30 and finished at 4:30 PM. We didn't mean for it to take four hours, but the food just kept coming on the degustation menu. Beware that there is something of a dress code, especially for men who must wear long pants and closed shoes. I guess they assume the women will dress up appropriately without any rules. As mentioned in other reviews, the wine list is intimidating. However, there are quite a number of good wines by the glass and also the sommelier helped us pick them out to appropriately accompany our various courses. I won't attempt to cover the entire menu, but our favorite courses were the salad 21 - 31 - 41-51, the white cod, and the Aubergine parmigiana. The last of those three was probably the most unique and unusual. The final four courses were also good but by that time we were starting to feel uncomfortably Full and also we started to get worried that too much time was passing by, as we had other engagements. Wines are not included in the price of the tasting menu, nor is the gratuity. The final bill was a high number, but probably would have been even higher for a three star restaurant in the USA in New York City. We made a reservation months prior to our visit. We looked at it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I've had so many lunches in my life that I wolfed down in about 10 minutes --I guess this balances things out to some degree. To be honest, we were uncomfortably full by the time we left and actually relieved that the meal was finally over. You might consider not eating for 12-24 hours before showing up here.
Be the first to ReplyProbably 4.
5 stars. Great, somewhat stuffy service. The amouse-bouches were plentiful, interesting and for most part delicious. We were a group of 3 and ordered ala carte Highlights were the famous salad, gnocchi, and shrimp carbanara, and pork main courseMisses were cacio pepe, and vitello tonnato We didn't have truffles which were double the price per gram elsewhere, and food didn't seem particularly suited for tartufi bianchi.Wine list was deep but expensive. Possible to find a couple relative values if you dig deeply.
Be the first to ReplyWe came to Alba/Piedmonte for truffle season.
Reservations book about 4 months out.The chef and this restaurant are the pride and joy of Alba since there aren't any other 3 star places here. Incidentally, he was leading the Italian bocuse d'or and had an event at the truffle fair, but we didn't get a chance to catch him. The restaurant is right off the Duomo plaza, hidden in an alley. Once you walk in and go up the stairs, the main dining room is a surprising pink room, which it turns out you can see from outside in the plaza. It had interesting drawings on the wall and ceiling, and I loved the non traditional setting. There were 4 different tasting options, including one with specially selected items that would be a good base for the truffles. We opted for the La Degustazione menu and had the option of adding truffles to specific courses. We started off with an extra Brut champagne at just €12 a glass. This went great with the amuses. Amuses: 1. Amaretti cookie 2. Puffed cracker3. Special cabbage with furikake and bonito (unexpected, great umami flavor) 4. Chickpea and buckwheat rice crackers: these tasted like mild shrimp chips - very savory 5. Chawanmushi: miso based, warm smooth custard, great flavor, perfect with champagne 6. Olives: both tasted like olives but weren't actually olives. The green one had a veal tartare inside, and the black one had langoustine 7. Seaweed chips 8. Olive cannoli with ricotta and mackarel 9. Green sponge cake with Swiss chard with tuna sauce 10. Avocado with spices (special for me since I don't like foie gras); the other amuse was a foie gras foam with some liqueur base - interesting in flavor 11. Paper thin potato chips 12. GrissiniThe wine list is huge and a little daunting. Pairings range from €100-400, but we went with a bottle of Barolo. The actual menu: 1. Anchovy with green sauce over a yellow pepper tartare: not overly salty or fishy2. Salad 21, 31, 41, 51: the number of ingredients based on the season. I love the little green folded card they give you listing all the ingredients. Lucky for us, there happened to be about 90 different ingredients in season for ours (surprising for November). Most interesting was the stevia leaf. Underneath the beautiful bowl was a dashi broth with orange zest to drink at the end. This is probably one of the best salads I've ever had 3. Bread: made in house - white, brown, and hazelnut4. Cod and porcini: tons of fresh porcinis shaved over sous vide cod with a porcini and cod cream sauce. The porcinis and cod are both on the lighter side and went together well 5. Cardoons: they're hard to find in the US! They're little like celery but more tender and different in flavor. These were cooked down and served with an anchovy and milk mousse, cardoon cream, and hazelnuts 6. Potato cream and lapsong suchong: with poached quail egg. We added white truffles to this, and it was amazing! The potatoes were super smooth and creamy, the egg yolk was runny, and it was the perfect base for the aromatic truffles. It was a super rich and intense dish - probably my favorite from this entire trip.7. Lentil and cotechino: half spheres of sausage with a fragrant broth and lentils 8. Risotto piedmonte: an interesting take on risotto with candied lemon, chocolate, hazelnut 9. Lamb and camomile: I tried only a bit of it - the meat itself was pretty solid but a little gamey for me, but the accompaniments were great. I substituted mine with a squid dish. It was squid, potatoes, and squid ink - similar to a dimsum shrimp dumpling inside10. Hazelnut monviso: a coffee caramel sandwich with an aromatic infusion - I don't like desserts much but really liked this To finish: 1. Muscat grapes 2. Chocolates with local hazelnuts3. Strawberry and passion fruit on a stick (my favorite) 4. Mini tart with vanilla and persimmon (in season) 5. "Hedonous cake" with banana and hazelnut - I really liked this one, too 6. Crunch of chocolate, cacao nib, and crisp of coconut 7. Espresso marshmallow Overall, it was a wonderful experience with nice food surprises and lots of attention to detail. The menus range from €200-240, with additional cost for truffles charged by the gram unless you get the truffle dinner. It more expensive this year since it was a bad season for white truffles - I think €9 per gram or so? We thought it was still worth it, though. Again, their truffles were much better quality than the other white truffles we had in Alba on this trip. I loved the use of unique Alba ingredients, and I'm a sucker for all the amuses. Wines were great, and by American standards, the price was pretty reasonable, especially for a 3 star Michelin / world's top 50 list restaurant. If you're in Cuneo or Alba, you should definitely try to get a reservation (book months in advance!)
