Pennygate Lodge Isle of Mull Reviews from The Last Year
A delightful weekend stay
What a delightful guest house! We couldn’t have asked for more perfect accommodation for our three days/nights on Mull. We arrived by early morning ferry from Oban and were greeted by Tony & Fiona when we dropped off our luggage to make the most of our first day on the the island with a visit to Staffa & Iona - the highlight of our visit. We were intending to eat in the evening at Pennygate Lodge, after reading the fabulous restaurant reviews, but it was unexpectedly closed over the weekend while we were visiting. However, to avoid our disappointment, on the first night Matthew, the restaurant manager, went out of his way to prepare some cold platters of local produce with matched wines. So we basically had our own chef, waiter and sommelier along with great conversation - and we didn’t go to bed hungry! Thank you Matthew, we truely appreciated your kindness, to present us with a lovely meal. The property has been beautifully renovated and the attention to detail is evident everywhere. We stayed in Duart overlooking the garden and harbour beyond, with bonus evening sunsets. Good size bedroom with two arm chairs, a large chest of drawers and clothes hangers set against one wall. The bed was comfortable with lovely linen and pillows, and the ensuite, with shower and free standing bath, also has a view of the harbour. Fresh milk and chilled water was available in a fridge on the landing and we were able to brew tea and coffee in our room. We enjoyed breakfast, (7:30 to 10am), starting with a buffet, plus menu items cooked to order. There’s everything to like about Pennygate Lodge.
So Disappointing
We chose to stay at Pennygate Lodge because of the multitude of 5 star reviews and the description of the Lodge as "6 individually styled bedrooms offering beauty , elegance and 'space' - impressive in proportions designed with the ultimate level of comfort for a perfect nights sleep" Sounds impressive doesn't it but we did not find the Lodge met these descriptions. We stayed in Ulva which was very very small with no fridge, no ice, a very small TV and only one chair which meant that either myself or my wife had to sit or lie on the bed when we returned from a long day out which could not really be described as "the ultimate level of comfort"! The window looked out over the kitchen roof so we couldn't really see the woods The bathroom was also very very small but I gave an extra star for the shower which was as described and was excellent. The breakfast was good although when my wife asked for a poached egg she was told the chef was unable to cook one! Only scrambled or fried. On the trip we stayed in 3 other B & B's all of which had rooms, without exaggeration, at least twice the size of our room in Ulva and all of them had 4 chairs for our comfort and 2 of them also had roll top baths as well as a very nice shower and they were not as expensive as Pennygate Lodge
Excellent stay at Pennygate Lodge
We spent three days at Pennygate Lodge during our holiday to the Isle of Mull. The location is fantastic, just next to the ferry. The rooms were clean, spacious, nicely decorated and comfortable. We were made to feel very welcome. The food in the restaurant is of an exceptionally high standard and brilliantly showcases the islands local produce. Matthew provides excellent wine pairings if you ask and is great for a chat and ideas on what to do on the island. The breakfast is also very good. Mull itself is a great place to visit. We went to Tobermory, went one of the distillery tours and also climbed Ben More. There are lots of great walks and places to visit and we only wish we could have stayed longer. Overall, we would highly recommend a stay at the Pennygate Lodge. I can't remember having a B&B enjoyed more. The restaurant itself is a reason to stop by and I would say is a must-visit for anyone visiting the island. Thank you again. Alex & Katie.
Great Choice on Isle of Mull
We stayed 3 days at Pennygate Lodge at the end of our wonderful two week Scotland trip. This was my favorite lodging, an old manse that has been extensively renovated with modern comforts, but has kept historic details. Our room was Duart, tastefully decorated and comfortable, with garden and water view windows. Gorgeous! Everything is kept spotlessly clean and fresh. We ate at the restaurant on the ground floor all three nights, because Matthew’s friendly service and Pauline’s fantastic cooking made it irresistible. The Inn is conveniently located for myriad activities on the Isle of Mull, and Fiona and Tony were lovely hosts.
Pennygate is Mull at its best.
Pennygate is a beautiful place to stay. The rooms are spotless, the beds very comfortable, and the bathrooms excellent. We had Calgary and our daughter and husband had Iona; both were delightful. Breakfast is excellent, whether cooked by Pauline and Matthew or Tony and Fiona. Exquisite cooking for the evening meal, although the choices are limited. I doubt whether there is a better place to stay on Mull. It is quiet, convenient, and very friendly.
A charming inn on a beautiful island at the edge of the world!
My husband and I took our 5-month-old baby to the Isle of Mull and stayed at Pennygate Lodge for 3 nights. We had an amazing time and we felt so well taken care of! Tony, the owner, was wonderful and made sure we had a pack and play for the the baby to sleep in. Our room ("Iona") was clean and had lovely views of the bay. Because of the baby, we ate two nights in a row at the restaurant on the ground floor, which had excellent food. And it was close enough to our room that the baby monitor still worked! The manager/waiter/bartender/jack-of-all-trades at the restaurant, Matthew, was SO lovely - he was great to chat with, offered excellent service, and gave us some amazing recommendations for the next leg of our trip in Edinburgh. I would stay at Pennygate Lodge again in a heartbeat!
The place to stay on Mull
This was definitely our favorite lodgings from our 2 week trip. What a beautiful and charming place. The location right next to the ferry is perfect. The room and bathroom on the top floor were amazing. The bed was so comfortable and the shower was luxurious. The hosts were lovely people who made sure all our needs were met. The water and fresh milk in the refrigerator were a special touch as was the fresh coffee and French press in the room. Every detail was noted. We can’t say enough about the restaurant downstairs. Matthew and Pauline are amazing as host and chef. You don’t want to miss them. Matthew knows his wines and will chose your pairings if you ask him. Pauline’s cooking will blow you away. Stay here if you can
Beautiful comfortable rooms and delicious local cuisine!
Pennygate won "Best Bath" of our 2+ week Scotland vacation! Our most friendly host, Fiona, and her staff were kind, lovely, attentive and helpful. We were two older couples touring Scotland together. Our rooms, and the Lodge itself, were beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, with very comfortable beds. So, important after a day of walking, hiking, biking and sightseeing. Breakfasts were delicious, plentiful and fresh! Our one mistake was not having dinner at Pennygate, instead we headed to the music festival in Tobermorey! Believe me we regretted it! Don't make the same mistake! Thank you for a lovely stay!
Mull Haven
This is a wonderfully comfortable place to make as your base if you are visiting Mull. It's extremely convenient for the Craignure ferry to/from Oban The rooms are tastefully decorated, extremely comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Our hosts, Tony and Fiona, were friendly, informative, and extremely professional. They have converted a wreck of a Scottish manse into a beautiful house, paying attention to period detail, but ensuring it feels, - and is, - modern. Lots of plans afoot in the garden. The restaurant is run separately, and breakfast is what you might expect - fruit, cereal, and a choice of cooked dishes. The food at dinner was delicious, but service on the slow side. This was early in the season, so I have no doubt it will speed up. Anyway, it was worth the wait, especially the local version of Surf 'n' Turf, - Langoustines and roast venison. Highly recommend. And thank you for a fabulous stay.
Lovely house, well run, good food, beautiful garden and great location.
We had a great start to our holiday in Mull at Pennygate Lodge. It’s a lovely characterful house located very conveniently for the Craignure Ferry which pootles in and out as you watch the sun go down over the Sound of Mull from the cosy lounge. The views from the beach back over to the Highlands on the mainland are stunning. Pennygate is a well run, welcoming and friendly place to stay and has the added bonus of an excellent restaurant on site, with excellent wine list and attentive staff. The beds were particularly comforatble! We’d definitely return.
Superb place!!
Just returned from a wonderful stay here. The staff were exceptional. Accommodation and dining superb. Lovely setting overlooking the Sound and the ferry terminal. Highly recommend!
A wee gem on Mull
I had the most wonderful weekend at Pennygate Lodge! We stayed in the Calgary room, which was warm and inviting, making us feel right at home. The food in their restaurant was delicious, bursting with flavour and full of fresh, local produce. And I can't forget about the owners, Fiona and Tony, who were incredibly welcoming and helped make our stay all the more enjoyable. Can't wait to come back for another stay! Highly recommend Pennygate Lodge for a cozy wee getaway on the Isle of Mull.
Pennygate Lodge - exceptional.....
We had a wonderful couple of days on the Isle of Mull, made all the better for staying at the sensational Pennygate Lodge. Fiona and Tony were outstanding hosts, and provided us with magnification hospitality. A clean, tidy and comfy suite with a large warm bed and soft dreamy pillows. Very tasty warm breakfast, and lovely informative chats about what and where to explore on the island. I can highly recommend the Pennygate Lodge....
Helpful Host!
Freshly renovated, Pennygate House is conveniently located close to the ferry. Rooms are bright, warm and comfortable. A good option for a night in Craignure. Food could not be assessed as the restaurant is not open on a Sunday evening and we left too early for breakfast. We make special mention of Tony, our host, who offered excellent advice on how to get to the front of the stand-by queue for the fully booked ferry, and who also got up at 0600 to give us a lift to the ferry during a local power cut, all very much appreciated
Small, beautiful and personal
Our hosts have lovingly restored an old manse on the rugged and beautiful Isle of Mull. The grounds and furnishings are handsome and the rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. Breakfast is delicious in the lovely dining room and the option to book an elegant dinner is a real treat. I cannot wait to return.
Amazing stay
Easy check in, Tony was able to be reached via phone and helped with luggage. The room itself is beautiful, clean, and comfortable with a lovely view of the front garden and bay. We had dinner at downstairs restaurant and could not have been more pleased. It was seriously one of the best meals thus far in Scotland. The lounge is nicely decorated and location can't be beat staying right in Craignure.
A small basic room, but my fault for choosing it over the larger rooms with viewss
This is a small inn that is within walking distance from the ferry. Our room (Ulva) was adequate, but small. We faced the back of the house and our window overlooked the roof of the kitchen so we really couldn't see the ocean or the woods. The sea facing rooms are larger and offer the view so if I visited again I'd spring for the larger/nicer rooms out front. The services are quaint and limited - no refrigerator, no ice, tiny wall mounted TV (at least in our room). The doors to the rooms around us closed with a thud that would wake a later sleeper. The grounds are lovely and the on-site restaurant (not run by the inn keeper) that provides breakfast and is open most evenings (check to be sure they will be open on your arrival, because other options nearby are extremely limited) is run by a very nice couple that cooks delicious meals. Tobermory is a slightly larger, pretty, and more active seacoast town on Mull that is about a 30 minute drive from the ferry. If I were to visit Mull again, in addition to the Pennygate Lodge, I might also look at accommodations in Tobermory. We enjoyed the drive and the visit to Tobermory during our stay at the Pennygate Lodge.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
