San Diego's Best Hotels that are most frequently booked by customers of Pendry San Diego
😒 3/5 - Greedy hotel

After staying out in Coronado or La Jolla on previous visits to San Diego, we decided to stay right in the city for this trip and selected the Pendry in preference to the Hyatt/Hilton/Marriott options. We booked a corner view room adding a specific request that we be allocated a room away from any noise sources. It was the noise, and the Pendry’s handling of it, that tainted our stay. At check-in there was mention we might encounter some noise on that side of the hotel. Sure enough as early as 6pm the noise from the street was cranking up and we called down with our concerns about being able to sleep. We were told all the corner view rooms were on that side. I reiterated our request for a quiet room and the fact we’d flagged it when booking. It became clear that the hotel should have advised us against a corner view room when we booked, so we could have selected a different room type (or hotel …) We began to feel we were being blamed for booking a corner view room! We were told the hotel was full and they couldn’t offer any other room, so we said we’d have to check out. Then we were told if we checked out we’d be liable for the full cost of our six night stay. A disagreement ensued as the hotel could and should have done more, both when we booked and at this point. Then we were offered the opportunity to see a suite which would cost us nearly double with no break on the extra, or a potentially quieter room for the following night, which we couldn’t see. We were not happy. We’ve visited 40 countries all over the world over many years and never been threatened with such draconian nonsense. Thankfully the staff member came after about ten minutes and took us to the equivalent room on the quieter side of the hotel, saying they’d done some checking and could move us straight away. We went with that option and the room had a vista of the bay across the rooftops which was nice. And it was quieter - we were woken up one night, but just that once. The rooms have a glass box containing the shower actually IN the bedroom. The glass does reflect light giving a feeling of space although the room is small and the bathroom is very tight. We’ve not encountered such cheap, thin toilet paper for years. The furnishings make no sense - an 8’ desk with a heavy almost immovable chair, yet nowhere for two to eat, e.g. for breakfast; a large rather tacky dresser housing a fridge full of revenue generating drink options with more on top. We never use a mini bar and would have preferred the space. The hotel has delusions of grandeur and charges accordingly. We weren’t impressed to be charged $5.50 a cup for basic brown liquid branded as coffee with our $80 breakfast, so had breakfast elsewhere the rest of our stay. In fact we made a point of dining elsewhere rather than patronizing the hotels offerings. On the last day we asked for a 1.5 hour extension on check-out and were told that could be done for $100. On escalating that, we were granted an hour free, but nickel and diming on the first AND last day isn’t good. The pool area is very cramped with far too many "Reserved" signs, which went unused for the entirety of our stay with guests squeezed on top of each other on the "allowed" sunbeds. With some exceptions, the staff are pretty up themselves - the culture in’t right and they seem trained to hide behind policy, rather than help, so we rarely felt like valued guests and the experience overall was disappointing. The exceptions are Devonte, who had to handle the ridiculous money-grabbing cancellation policy and did solve the room issue on day 1, Roman, Vito, Chris and all the delightful housekeeping crew - our thanks to them.
