The place was jammed. No wonder, the food is excellent.
Jose Andres has another winner at this spot in downtown DC. Just like his others up the street there is something wrong with you if you are unable to find something to tickle your fancy. Started with drinks and a wonderful guacamole followed with small plates. There were two vegetarians with in the group and they had no problem finding suitable choices. My wife was anxious to sample Chapulines, the legendary Oaxacan specialty of sautéed grasshoppers, and they did not have it. I recall drinking Michelada on a trip to Mexico in another life and alas, it was not available eiher. Dessert was good as well!
Be the first to ReplyClassic Jose Andres branded dining experience
Another solid Jose Andres experience in DC. Small plate selection is excellent, service was very good. Visited during Restaurant Week so there was a special selection which most at the table participated in and enjoyed very much. Something for everyone in a crowd which included vegetarians.
Be the first to ReplyFun festive and delicious
Enjoyed a margarita w chips and salsa. Then we shared a quesadilla and a few tacos. The fish taco was a favorite but pork good as well. Of course carne asada always meets the mark. Fun butterfly motif and attentive waitress. A fun experience and we’ll be back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat! Delicious Mexican dishes!
Visited here with a few friends for lunch during DC's Winter Restaurant Week. We had made a reservation in advance, and I recommend doing this; the place was packed. Service was prompt and attentive. Staff courteous. I ordered a few different tacos while others in my party ordered the restaurant week set menu. Everyone enjoyed their food. Nice twists to typical Mexican-style dishes, as well as some dishes not common in your standard Mexican restaurants. I loved the chips - thick, crunchy, flavorful. Even better was the handmade guacamole, made there on site. DELICIOUS. Recommended for sure!
Be the first to ReplyAttentive bar service inside a vibrant, hip space.
Good service, affordable happy hour prices. Vibrant atmosphere inside. Bar gets busy past 5:30, and bar space is limited for larger groups. Recommend bar seating for smaller groups looking for attentive bartending service.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service and food ok
We choice the tasting menu but I was disappointed because is more like sharing big plates of food some good like the appetizers but main course more on the heavy preparation and blend the dessert was good and the service one of the best in the city
Be the first to ReplyMargaritas and party scene!
First time here on a Monday evening. Wow!! Dining partner had been drinking and partied here in the past as part of an encounter. Really busy. Very trendy, loud and pretty young crowd. Absolutely not a place for a business meal. Margaritas seemed to be the primary reason folks were here. Eating clearly took a back seat to the drinking and partying (and general hook up) scene. Server was friendly and helpful. Had a reservation, but ended up with a pretty bad table. Very loud. Guacamole was excellent. Fresh and made to order. Margaritas were good, too. Small plates; some were good, some just okay. Some too hot spice for my tastes. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. No problem there at all,in case you actually want to eat here and not just drink (we did). Could easily take a vegan here for dinner. For sure part of a very trendy scene here! Skipped dessert and got amazing ice cream and sorbet 2 doors down.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, bad service
Great food, bad service. Could give them the benefit of the doubt because we were seated right before a very large, very high maintenance party that monopolized our server. Weren’t offered get any drink refills or second rounds, forgot one of our courses and had to be reminded. Made a reservation and still had to wait a while.
Be the first to ReplyVery solid meal
I enjoyed this spot. Good margaritas, excellent fresh made guac, and a nice menu with interesting choices. We enjoyed everything we ate here
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely recommend
We had time to kill in the rain before the theater around the block.what a find! Amazing octopus, cervice, and mojitos with foam salt..just a blast. We ended up coming back after the show and sat at the high tables because it was packed (at 4:30pm). We got scallops, tequila cocktails (so creative), and the Mexican national dish of a stuffed pepper, just fabulous. Not cheap, around $200 for all of it, but definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Food, Amazing Tequila + Mezcal List, Knowledgeable + Helpful Staff
The food was amazing. The staff was very kind and helpful. They have a super extensive tequila and mezcal menu with lots of info on all the choices. I really enjoyed the tequila flights. I have several dietary restrictions and was able to find lots of items that I could eat. My server was able to direct me toward everything that was safe for me to eat.
Be the first to ReplyGood food but very rude
The food and drinks were good, loved them. However, the server was not super friendly, which was not a big deal until it came to the bill. My girlfriend and I went during happy hour which on the front page of the website mentioned nothing about it only being at the bar. When the bill came and we asked about the pricing, our server rudely told us we should have asked him and then hastily gave us the happy hour price on just our drinks, not the food. I (a socially anxious and non-confrontational 21 year old) politely told the host that in the future they should inform the guests that happy hour only applies to bar patrons (or at least edit the website) when they preceded to argue with us and gestured us to move aside for the guests walking in. Again, the food and drinks were sadly delicious, I’m just extremely disappointed that a restaurant with such a highly regarded chef would be so rude when receiving constructive and polite negative feedback. Our server was Daniel, Im not sure who the hosts were.
Be the first to ReplyGood place for tapas
Noisy, crowded, unusual menu, good food. Waiter couldn't wait for us to order = quite annoying. Tables too close together. Ordered 2 street tacos = good amount for lunch. The pork one was the best but chicken also good. Good wine. Would definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyAverage
Ate here for lunch, this place is very popular as the restaurant was packed. Ordered 4 different types of their tacos, was not blown away by any of the flavors. Thought the food was average, service was average as well. If you want to come here make a reservation prior.
Be the first to ReplyCalling a customer a liar is a bad business practice
My wife and I have been customers of Oyamel since it was in Crystal City, in 2004. That ended today. Over the years I've organized events here with my colleagues from the George Washington University. That ended today too. And I will ask my colleagues to hold their events elsewhere. We had a 3:00pm reservation today, 1/14/23. Our server was Rafael. He was nice enough but indifferent. If he was busy that was an issue for him and management, not us as customers. We continuously had to wave him down to take our order, clear our table, and answer our questions. But Oyamel lost our business when I asked Rafael if the coffee was fresh, he said yes, I ordered coffee, he brought me espresso, I said I ordered coffee, and he said I ordered espresso. Calling a customer a liar is a bad business practice. He then brought me coffee but it was old. On our way out the door I reported Rafael to one of the managers, Silvia. Other than her name she said nothing. Literally. Restaurants ask dissatisfied customers to speak with managers before they leave. I did but Silvia did nothing. That's another bad business practice. Our food and drinks were delicious. But we can get that at many restaurants. Good service is what keeps customers coming back. Oyamel lost at least two customers today.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and disappointing
Dined here after reading reviews and was looking forward to good and different Mexican cuisine. The food was okay to disappointing. The special of the day was a duck confit, which was bland and dry. The pork and beef tacos were a bit better, but not outstanding. Be aware that this is a tapas restaurant so if you order the guacamole and chips you probably don’t need to order more than 2 tapas plates. Our waiter wasn’t all that helpful in answering questions. I would categorize this place as pricey. It’s loud too, and attracts a young, professional crowd.
Be the first to ReplyVery good but noisy
This restaurant was very good, but conversation was almost impossible due to the noise. The margaritas were great as was the food.
Be the first to ReplyLucky find near the National Mall in DC
Had no idea what we were in for, but our car was parked underground nearby and we rode our electric Lime bike/scooter to the closest drop off point and then realized we were famished. Walked around the corner and spotted Oyamel Cocina Mexicana! They had availability on the sidewalk bistro style seating and we took it. We had no idea they were listed in the MICHELIN Guide! I love guacamole (my own is probably my favorite), so when we saw the tableside prepped guacamole option we started with that. YUM. Great spot close to the national mall if you are in town exploring, put this on your list for wonderful Mexican food.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, slow service
My family came here for dinner on a weeknight with a reservation. The place was packed. The food was delicious and I’d recommend the food for sure. However, our service was painstakingly slow. We were not in a rush and are used to long, slow dinners. However, we stopped ordering drinks and refrained from trying dessert because we couldn’t wait at the table any longer. It was too bad because we really enjoyed the food.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, service, and margarita's
I had been out all day sightseeing and happened across Oyamel. I was directed to the bar for seating and found and promptly found an empty seat. I started with the Serrano margarita and was not disappointed. I quickly was served chips and salsa and then placed an order for the chicken enchilada. After the chicken enchilada, I ordered a fish taco. The food was just amazing! So fresh and flavorful. I also tried the Oyamel margarita (the one with the salt foam) it was good, but I preferred the Serrano margarita and went back to that one. The service was great as well. The bar area was very busy, but the bartender stayed attentive to my needs, asking if I needed more food/drinks. I highly recommend Oyamel and will definitely return when I'm in the area again!
Be the first to ReplyJose Andres scores rave reviews again!
We have consistently visited Jose Andres restaurants wherever we travel and have yet to be disappointed. After repeat visits to several of our DC favs (all surprisingly located within a walking vicinity near the Capitol One Arena) we went to Oyamel for lunch. Everything was outstanding - margaritas, blood orange mimosas, guacamole & chips, cerviche, tacos, and hearts of palm salad. Service was great and food delish.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal, cannot wait to go back
Excellent Mexican meal - I loved this place. Visited with my niece who had been before and we had a great meal from the tortilla chips (which along with the salsa are the best I've ever had) to the tapas dishes we shared. Great mix of dishes - meat, veggie and vegan. All served promptly with friendly service. We had wine but the restaurant recommends the Margarita which is apparently a specialty.
Cannot wait to visit again. Very buzzy and busy on a Friday night - great vibe.
Bad service today
Update of a formerly-5-star review.
Waited 20 minutes at my table without being acknowledged.
I've been here many times during my trips to DC. It's the one restaurant I always look forward to.
After 2 years without visiting, I finally had a chance to come to DC and I was very excited. Made a reservation on OpenTable, which says there's a 15 minute grace period. Got there on time, got a table quickly. And then 20 minutes went by and nobody even came by to say hello, much less take a drink order.
They've also taken my two favorite dishes off the menu (Chapulines and Chiles en Nogada), although that's likely due to sourcing.
I walked over to Jaleo, solely because I respect Jose Andres too much not to spend with his restaurants. I hope my next time in Oyamel isn't like this
Pricey but tasty and trendy option in DC
Our family were lucky to get a table here on a week night while visiting DC. My non-Mexican-food loving family was able to find a few dishes to try that they liked. Most of the menu are small tapas plates for sharing with some Taco offerings.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal at the bar
Sat at the bar while grabbing dinner after meetings nearby. They take care of you at the bar quite well. Got to try the tequila and mezcal festival event special menu and had duck confit taquitos smothered in mole. Yes, that sounds over the top, but sometimes you just have to go over the top. As always, great guacamole and chips. This is good, flavorful, quality Mexican food done. Big new experience this time was having the tres leches cake for dessert with fresh whipped cream, caramel ice cream, and fresh strawberries. I seriously wanted to lick the plate. Always a good time for a later meal since they don't roll up the sidewalks too early here.
