Owamni by The Sioux Chef Minneapolis Reviews from The Last Year
Interesting Ingredients with a Great Mission
I enjoyed my meal at Owamni! I'm vegetarian and had a number of options to choose from the seasonal menu - two "small plates" ended up being the right amount for me to eat. If they're available, I definitely recommend the teas. Location is small so definitely make sure to make a reservation in advance.

Before dining at Owamni, I hadn't given much thought to indigenous cuisine, but this experience completely changed my perspective. From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the warm and inviting atmosphere, which perfectly complements the incredible food. The menu is a beautiful celebration of indigenous ingredients and flavors. Each dish was a delightful journey that showcased the richness of the culture and the creativity of the Soyuz Chef. I was blown away by the freshness and the unique combinations--every bite was a revelation! Not only was the food some of the best I've ever had, but the staff was also friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share the stories behind the dishes. If you're looking to expand your culinary horizons or simply enjoy a fantastic meal, I can't recommend Owamni enough. It's a must-visit for everyone! I personally cannot wait to try out some of the recipes in their cookbook, "The Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen".

Food presentation is amazing, decor is simple but elegant, location is beautiful and service is great. The actual food is ok. Nothing impressive beyond the fact that the restaurant boasts the concept of removing all colonial ingredients from the menu in favor of an indigenous cuisine elaborated exclusively with North American products.
I had one of my favorite meals ever here at Owamni.
It was truly incredible to taste new flavors I've never had before along with dishes that tasted like perfection. The rotating menu of Indigenous food all sounded delicious (including the teas and desserts), and it was hard to just pick a few for our meal. Some particular standouts to me were the (very generous portion of) grilled sweet potato. These char-grilled sweet potato wedges were so flavorful, and the ample chili oil they added on top were a delicious touch. I also loved the bison taco--it was braised so well, and then the sweet, fruit sauce paired so nicely with the gaminess of the bison meat. Our server was also very kind and walked us through the menu before we ordered. The views of the Mississippi River from the restaurant were also very nice and relaxing, which rounded out a great meal. Definitely come to Owamni if you have a chance! And be sure to make a reservation!
This place was amazing and I love the concept.
Absolutely worth the money and a wonderful experience. The birria taco was hands down the best thing I've ever ate in my life!!!
Lived up to all expectations.
Truly a special and memorable meal. I had the bison birria taco, sweet potato, and corn cookie. All wonderful
Nice Dinner
The food was very expensive but very good. We wished there would have been information available about the food. For example the sweet potato was white, not yellow. Why? Was it a variety that was heirloom? Was it wild sweet potato? Was it a variety specifically used by the Sioux? There was nothing on the menu about it and the wait staff did not know. All of the dishes it was the that way. So it was a very nice experience, but we left with no additional knowledge about the Sioux food culture.
We ate at Owamni on 7/13/24.
After reading the menu, full of locally sourced unusual fare, four of us agreed to eat family style so we could sample more dishes. Corn chowder, carrot tartar, pickles, and sweet potatoes came out first, followed by smoked bison and gumbo. To be honest, the main seasonings were vinegar and hot peppers. We were assured the "heat" was adjusted to Minnesota tastes. They lied. Our mouths were aflame before we got to the smoked bison, which was the highlight of our meal. The desserts were flavorless. Sad $325 meal. One of our party was hungry when we left and another had to buy TUMS.
We think this may be the top restaurant we've ever been!
We think this may be the top restaurant we've ever been! Wow. This is a one of a kind place providing a decolonized food selection and a menu in English and Dakota online that changes seasonally. I do recommend you make reservations 2+ weeks in advance to get an ideal time, but otherwise walk up and lunch times are very open it seemed. Reservations may place you at a "community table" so you may share a table with another couple. We saw a range of dress but mainly casual and some formal. As for the food, it is very hard to narrow down. We thought 4 dishes (2 plant and 2 game) was the perfect amount. The trout and bean dip still has my mouth watering, so definitely get that. The squash is super filling. The elk skewers were perfectly grilled. The corn taco was sweet. At the end a charge a bit above 10% is added to help pay waiters/waitresses well. You can still tip and we liked that we knew this beforehand and appreciate that they do this. We would love to be back in another season!
It was fine but not even close to great.
They have a unique cocktail menu and there are dishes on the menu you probably can't get at any other restaurant, but the food wasn't very flavorful, and they messed up our order in multiple ways. The prices are way too high for what we got. Overhyped.
Awesome service and great ambiance/ location right on the
Awesome service and great ambiance/ location right on the river. Had the smoke trout dip which was fantastic with all the flavors. Tried to squash and that was ok but wouldn't get again. Kind of plain. Got the bison taco which had a great combo of flavors. Lastly we shared the scallops which were delicious and loveeeed the spoon cake with egg yolk but overpriced for 5 scallops. ** had ordered the elk skewers and carrot appetizer but they had ran out for the day which was strange because our reservation was earlyish at 5:30... and be ware of 13% surcharge
Must Try Restaurant in Minneapolis
What can I say? One of my favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities. Original concept executed brilliantly. The food never disappoints, always creative. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful, but they have to be because most people won't be familiar with the menu. Great views overlooking the Mississippi River. This is from my latest visit in June 24 Server: Joseth T 5/5 on knowledge, helpfulness, and patience Homemade Soda with Maple, Vanilla, and Sarsaparilla 4.5/5 CORN TACO * Corn Jam * Corn Fritter * Sumac Popcorn 4/5 SWEET POTATO MASH * Mushroom Gravy * Seed Mix 4/5 DUCK PUPUSA * Braised Duck * Mole Amarillo 4/5 ELK SKEWERS * Turnip + Carrot Slaw * Garlic Squash Aioli * Onion 5/5 My favorite dish of this visit. Just by the smell wafting from the plate I knew it was going to be good, but I was wrong. It was Excellent!! Tender, flavorful, and perfect. SQUASH CUSTARD * Meringue * Bison Fat Caramel 4/5 Once again a very good visit. Some of my previous visits include the following highlights: PAWPAW CUSTARD * Squash Caramel * Fermented Berry Dust * Nuts 10/5 The best dish I have eaten at Owamni!! They even made crickets taste good!
We celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary at Owamni, after dropping off our daughter at summer camp. The setting is lovely, the food was delicious and the staff bent over backward to ensure we were comfortable and had a nice time. We loved the location by the river, overlooking the falls. I insisted on ordering the crickets, and even my reluctant husband enjoyed them. Such a great night!
great concept, but some drawbacks
I wish there was a 3 1/2 star rating. Best things: -unique experience -kind servers -delicious bison taco Less than great: -rushed plates. Came out so fast, there really wasn't time to properly enjoy. I felt they were trying to turn the table as quickly as possible. -portion size was really small for the price, especially the elk entree (just six smaller bites of elk for $38) I am glad that I tried Owamni; I sincerely appreciate the concept and the attention it is getting. I just felt it was quite pricey and rushed.
A Unique, Well Curated and Delicious Dining Experience
Not to show off but I’ve eaten at some of the finest restaurants around the world, laden with Michelin stars and I honestly believe this a e can hold its own with most of them. Why? Well the concept behind the place goes a very long way, it chimes well with modern concerns and at the same time celebrates previously undervalued cultural cuisine. But that would be a mere gimmick if not backed up with exceptional cooking and it is indeed exceptional. It is perhaps the unique ingredients and their masterful pairings that elevate most of the dishes to the very highest standard. For example in Europe a tartare of beef is often paired with pickled veg to cut through the richness of the meat but here, blue berries were used to wonderful effect. Crucially a vegetarian can also get a grand meal here and because no colonial ingredients are used, those with gluten or diary intolerances can have a meal of a life time. Which is what I did. I simply cannot recommend this restaurant enough for a unique and stimulating culinary experience.
Delicious Offerings but Pricey
We all agree that the items we chose were prepared well and had fantastic flavor. However, the portions are on the small side and they add a 13% service fee (which is noted on their webpage). Definitely worth the experience if you love to have dining adventures but I doubt I'd go back.
Wonderful and unique restaurant
This restaurant is amazing. Beautiful views, attentive staff, excellent food. We had wild rice, bison and elk tacos, duck breast, and squash custard. The duck was honestly the best I’ve ever eaten. I highly recommend eating here.
Never again
My family recently ate at Owamni, in Minneapolis. We had been trying to have a table for a long time, and were very excited. Our reservation was for the last shift, at 7:30 pm. We arrived at 7:35. The first item on the menu of 13 items was a tea that was distributed in the hallway, while we still had our coats on. The second, smoked berries on a tostada the size of quarter, was served on a plater while we were entering the room. When we arrived at our table, the third was already on the table and the fourth, a corn soup, arrived about two minutes later, starting to create a confusion of plates on our table. We ordered the wine pairing, but it only added to the confusion: what was supposed to go with what? I asked the waitress to stop bringing plates to the table to give us a chance to focus on one dish and quietly enjoy it but it never happened. A waisted evening just because of the crazy rush. Chef Sean Sherman had left out of his restaurant the most important of native ingredients: hospitality, conviviality.
Wait a little before tossing the leftovers!
The lunch we ordered was delicious without a doubt. I was not able to finish the Sweet Potato Maple Chili Crisp at the price of $15. I asked for a go box and boxed up the leftovers. As many people do, I forgot to pick up the box upon leaving. I wasn't gone any more than 5 minutes, or less, and remembered my box. I went back in the restaurant, and was told that they had thrown away my box. I was surprised by the response, and thought how wasteful, a restaurant that prides itself on conserving water, and serving a unique and healthy food that should never be thrown away. The leftovers were perfectly good, and only touched by a serving spoon, and about half of the whole order was left. A very good lunch ended with a not so good impression. I realize many people do not come back for a forgotten box of food, but what about those of us who do?
Really lovely location and wonderful experience.
The food was amazing and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. Have recommended to others many times.
We were warmly greeted for our lunch reservation and
We were warmly greeted for our lunch reservation and quickly seated. Our server gave us a quick explanation of the menu and left to get our cocktails and water. Upon her return. We ordered the cricket and seed mix(quite tasty) and the red cliff lake trout + white bean spread(so good you could spread it on a flip flop and eat it). We followed this up with the tartare( again excellent the pickled mushrooms were a great addition to the dish) and the corn taco (good, but we felt an order should have 2). We ended with the the blue corn mush(this seemed a little like a wet bread pudding and could have used a little texture and the stuffed poblanos which was a little pricey at $30, but when the plate came it seemed fair as it was two large stuffed peppers...it was a huge entree and just fabulous. All in all very good, it was just so hyped up before we went it seemed like it didn't live uo to expectations and it is a fabulous concept.
Clean and cozy dining area.
The food was unique and tasty. The service was constant and knowledgeable
This restaurant is in beautiful location and the atmosphere
This restaurant is in beautiful location and the atmosphere is great. Our server didn't know anything about the actual spring menu items as she said this was her first day back after being gone a month. We were not very adventurous with what we tried but what we had was good. Was it worth the high prices, I would say no? Was it good and somewhere to try, yes.
The food had a unique blend of flavors that I never tasted
The food had a unique blend of flavors that I never tasted before such as elk that is corn-crusted and served with garlic squash aioli. Also, the squash custard served with meringue and bison fat caramel adds an elevated touch to a flan-like dessert. The tea was also pretty good. However, it was pretty expensive but that is to be expected with fine dining. The inside is nice and modern.
If you google this place, lots of articles will come up
If you google this place, lots of articles will come up describing how the entire restaurant honors the native people who originally lived on the land the restaurant is on. Server attentive and super knowledgeable. Every dish was superb. Interior is understated but beautiful with a view of the river and bridge. Go if you can!
What a cool restaurant! The food here is super unique.
I've never had anything like it. The tea is delicious. Servers are super helpful with explaining menu options and answer any questions you may have.
It's the simplicity of the ingredients that make this
It's the simplicity of the ingredients that make this restaurant shine. Looking forward to the seasonal menu rotation.
Owamni is a unique restaurant that everyone should try at
Owamni is a unique restaurant that everyone should try at least once. Not only will you enjoy delicious food, you will be immersed into a cultural and learning experience. Owamni only uses foods native to the area during the different seasons. The service is incredible. Each time we have gone the servers are happy to answer any questions about the menu. The food comes in small plates, and we have found it best to order a few items to share. Make a reservation further in advance because spots fill up quickly. There is a pay parking lot across the street as well.
The food is terrible.
Plain and simple. Pheasant was dry as can be and the blueberries didn't make it better. Over priced to claim to be "indigenous" to the area. Doubt it. regardless. It's not good. Zero flavor. Service was what you expect from a high end and reputable restaurant. Parking is non-existent. Good luck. The view is the best part. I can't believe it won beat restaurant in MN. Weird.
One of the best meals I’ve ever had
One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten—the staff were gracious, the food was remarkable. I highly recommend the Marichou, Shaved Bison Picanha, and Wild Rice Pudding. These are haunting flavors, a wonderful and inspiring meal in a beautiful setting.
Good and fun to say was there but not sure I would go again
I have let too much time pass to give a detailed review. Everyone else in our group of 4 raved about the food. I liked it ok but I did not think it was worth the wait to get a reservation or the price. I would rather put my time into some other restaurant. But that is me. I did really like the duck purple corn mash. Very different and very good. I like duck. At this time I can’t remember any of the other food. I know it was good but … The dessert was not very sweet as you would expect. Again cannot recall what it was. Service was good. Sorry for the poor quality of this review.
Underwhelming, overpriced and pretentious
We were in town for a wedding. Hotel offered this restaurant as an option. Since we were just a group of three, we were able to get a seat at this restaurant. Upon entering the building and being seated, the staff, the actual menu, the aura were all preachy and arrogant. We chose to stay and give it a try. We won’t make that mistake again. The prices were astronomical and the portions were bite-sized. On top of it, they add all these fees on top of the listed menu price bc their employees deserve a certain quality of life. Really? Then price the menu accordingly and spare me the self-righteousness. We have a business and we provide a great service at a reasonable price AND we pay our employees very well (with benefits too). I’m open to a meal that comes with learning/education, but don’t expect me to pay a small fortune for an even smaller meal and get lectured on top of it.
Reservation issue
So my mom went to check.in while I parked. When I came in she seemed stressed and said there was an issue with our reservation. I went to desk and they first claimed my reservation wasn't for another 90 minutes. She had been looking up the wrong name...same first name but assumed I was the other person with different last name due later. I explained when my reservation was for and she then found it but refused to honor it and said we could sit on patio instead but that was all she could.offer. it was in the high 90s outside so I definitely would have preferred indoor table for the experience we had booked but there was no accommodation whatsoever. It was below expectations for what we paid. Another time when we came they found our reservation but we still had to wait over 30 minutes.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
