A trip to a Michelin-starred restaurant is a complete failure, a waste of money and time
Terrible place, after every dish, not counting fresh fruit and sashimi, I wanted to cry, take away a star from this restaurant
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Kaiseki in Gion!
Entire family got the 12 course meal (most expensive). Amazing dinner and amazing dessert. Sake was excellent quality. Ingredients fresh of course and service quintessential of a fine dining establishment. Even had bilingual speaking staff. Wholeheartedly recommend this special hidden gem!

My family and I visited this superb Michelin starred restaurant on our recent trip to Kyoto.
It was a pleasant 20 minute walk from our hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo.
The food was exquisite, refined Japanese cuisine.
In particular the sashimi was the finest I have ever had and the fish head was so delicate and crunchy.
Presentation is picture perfect of course.
The waitresses attend in authentic kimonos and kneel graciously before serving each course in the formal Japanese style.
We were in heaven.
A wonderful way to farewell our favourite city in the world
Read my review first... Amazing restaurant tucked away in the middle of Gion
To make things very clear, the other reviews are incredibly bigoted towards this place. This place was immaculate, clean, world class service and the food was unbelievable. If you are a tourist then you need to be patient with the waitress and chefs as they do not speak good English, if any.
You can sit down and point at a course and just enjoy an amazing meal prepared immaculately then come here. Do not expect someone to hold your hand and walk you through the meal. If that is what you are looking for, then do not eat here.
There are multiple course options ranging from ¥7,000 all the way up to ¥20,000 and can assure that they are all amazing (we went with the ¥16,000 one). This is Japan so some other reviews complaining about an itemized bill is a bit silly.
Michelin star place ? Please...
I cannot say anything about the food at Mashita, because we had to leave before having started our meal. But I have a lot to say about the atmosphere and the (lack of) service.
I have booked this place more than a month in advance. When we arrived, we were seated at a table located less than 1 m from a crowded bar. At the bar, there was a very noisy group of 7 people. For more than 10 minutes, none of the waiter ladies paid any attention to us. After a while, I went to the entrance and asked to be seated at a quieter table. I was told that our table was the only one available.
Then the only English speaking lady told us, after a lengthy and unpleasant discussion, in a fairly aggressive manner, that if we did not like our (noisy) table, we should leave. So... we left.
Judging from the other reviews, perhaps the quality of the food at this place is good, but in my opinion, the atmosphere and the service is less than what one expects at a McDonald, let alone at a Michelin star restaurant.
Good quality of the food, but need improvements on the service
Hi!
we are a couple that visited this restaurant on our last trip to Japan on December 2016.
We have tried a lot of michellin starred restaurants over the world and we must say we finnished a little bit disapointed with this one.
First the positive points: the food was great, good products and really good cooked. Nice presentation. But the menu was too basic.
But our bad critic is more related with the service. They were really nice, but they need to improve some aspects. We ate at the bar, really nice looking to the chefs. But the couple next to us finished eating five minutes after we arrived and no one took out their dirty dishes. So we had to eat all our lunch (1 hour and a half) with the dirty dishes of others next to us.
At least, the prices were correct, no too expensive considering other starred restaurants in Japan.
Excellent food and immaculate presentation
I came across this restaurant by accident as I was walking down Shijo in the Gion part of Kyoto.
The menu for a set course dinner was out the front and the restaurant was way down in the back of a well-lit alley way. I didn’t have a reservation but I was seated after I was shown the menu from which there were three courses to select from for dinner. A 10-course meal for 7000 yen and another for 10,000 yen. There was a 12-course option available for an even higher price. I asked what the difference was and the difference was in the quality of the ingredients.
The photos of each dish speak for themselves. The use of yuzu, a local ingredient for which Kyoto is famous for was immediately found in the welcome tea with a bit of plum flavour.
My favourite dish was rice in soup with chrysanthemum petals. It was so aromatic and delicious.
It’s a bit pricey but I think if you were going to do one fine meal in Kyoto, this is the place to do it in. It’s costs just as much as a dinner in a ryokan.
