Excellent omakase at great price!
Excellent, fresh sushi, with efficient and smiling service in a lovely little space. No frills omakase 10 piece only $66? Amazing!
Be the first to ReplyOk, but not a place we would revisit
We have had many people rave about this place so we had to try it. The raving reviews probably set high expectations, but we were not impressed. We (3 adults) ordered quite a bit of sushi/sashimi-the servings were two pieces or handrolls. They season or process the sushi/sashimi in a way that removes all texture from the food-if you like a soft buttery texture you will love it. All the sushi/sashimi had a slight saltiness(not ocean salty) but more of a briny taste. The sushi/sashimi may be fresh but it was hard to tell because of the briny taste. The staff seemed insulted when we(as well as other diners) wanted ginger or wasabi(no soy sauce on the tables-you have to request that too) with our order and it took a while to bring those items-I am guessing the chefs wants you experience the sushi as presented. I understand that when you order Omakase style, you do eat the food as presented-we did not order Omakase style. The cost (expensive) of the sushi/sashimi, in my opinion, did not meet the quality/flavor of the food. We only had the sushi/sashimi so please don't apply this review to the other areas of their menu. We are always in search of a good or great sushi place...sadly,this will not be on our list.
Be the first to ReplyTransport Yourself to the Ginza District in Japan
Let me preface my review by revealing that I am an older Caucasian who has never really mastered chopsticks. That said, I have close neighbor friends who are from Taiwan, one of whom speaks Japanese, and for the last 40 years, they have taken me to every notable sushi restaurant in Southern California. I can remember the days before sushi was popular and was inexpensive, and when real crab showed up in California rolls and bluefin tuna was easy to find and cheap.
Getting a reservation at this small popular restaurant is a challenge, to say the least. Do not even think about trying to show up without a reservation. You must call between 10 and 10:30 am up to a week ahead of time for lunch and between 5:00 and 5:30 a week ahead of time for dinner. The line is always busy when you try to call so say your prayers ahead of time and you just might get through. That said, this restaurant is worth the trouble. Closed Sun and Mon.
Ohshima is a tiny restaurant in a nondescript strip mall on Tustin Ave set back from the street. Look for Darya Restaurant nearby that is on the street and in the same mall. Plenty of parking.
Show up on time or you will not be accommodated. Your reservation (at least ours for a party of 4 on a Sat night) was 2 hours and you and your party are expected to leave at the 2-hour mark. There are only 2 tables for 4 and about 5 tables for 2. The sushi bar seats about 10 people and can only be reserved for parties of 2.
4 sushi chefs, younger and older, work the sushi bar. Inside the restaurant is quite dark and somewhat noisy. The chefs are all business and you will not receive a corny welcome in Japanese. The environment feels like a tiny sushi restaurant in the Ginza District of Japan and you can imagine yourself dining on sushi with Anthony Bourdain, bless his soul.
Sit at the sushi bar if you want sushi only and omakase as none of the cold and hot dishes is served at the bar. At the tables, you can choose from an extensive assortment of outstanding dishes as well as sushi. You must ask for soy sauce but you definitely don't want to or need it. Service is all business, but polite, and fast.
Everything we ordered was oishii. Foie gras salad, foie gras nigiri, cherry salmon nigiri (the best sushi I have ever had), black cod nigiri, shrimp tempura, calamari tempura, garlic edamame, uni spaghetti, beef tongue and a steamed shitake mushroom custard (Chawanmushi) that has no English name but is so delicious you will want to order two. It is said that the quality of this custard is a sign of excellence in a Japanese restaurant and this restaurant's version was top notch. I am told that the pork belly and lamb chop with miso is to die for also. Forego rolls as they will just fill you up with rice carbs.
All in all, this was one of my most memorable experiences dining at a sushi restaurant over the past 40 years. Despite the hassle of securing a reservation, I will return again soon.
Best VALUE Omakase Sushi Course in Southern California.
The title says it all. Best VALUE. Most omakase-style courses in the LA/Orange County area range from $80~$120 per person, starting. At Ohshima, it starts at $45 for the initial 8 pieces. Adding for extra pieces for a total of 12 courses of sushi put the bill at $75 per person, including 20% tip.
I glossed over some of the other reviews posted here on tripadvisor, complaining the "lack of this-fish-or-that-fish-on-the-menu." One thing a person should realize is that Ohshima looks to stock fish based on quality, not availability. That means certain fish will not make it onto the menu; perhaps the fish isn't in season, or the quality was not worthy enough to serve to customers. Good sushi starts with fresh fish. A sushi chef worth his salt knows which fish at the market will bring out the best flavors.
I've eaten at Ohshima through the years, and the quality is quite consistent. Each piece of sushi is treated with care, artfully scored, seasoned, plated, dressed. Placed before you when ready. Sumptuous, and rich. Mildly sweet, supple in texture. A marriage of flavors that dance along the palate as you chew. Sometimes you'll get fare so fresh, it is still live. Such as live spot prawns that get their heads ripped off before your eyes at the bar, peeled, slit, placed on a bed of vinegared rice. The heads get taken off for a secondary serving of prawn head miso soup.
Some pieces are mildly dressed in a particular soy sauce, to let the natural sweet brine of a particular fish cut through. Some pieces are accentuated with yuzu kosho for a touch of spice, and pungent acidity.
One night, you may get Bluefin tuna, Buri/Yellowtail, Hotategai/Scallops, Uni/Sea Urchin Roe, Amaebi/Santa Barbara Spot Prawns, Sake/Cherry Salmon, Tai/Sea Bream, and Kanpachi/Amberjack.
Another night, you may see some pieces represented with Tsubugai/Neptune, Mekajiki/Marlin, Hirame/Flounder, Saba/Mackerel. There's even foie gras and Japan-imported wagyu beef. It's astounding to me how much the menu can change from week-to-week.
There are not many sushi bars, if at all, that can offer this experience at this price point.
One thing to note, you should get a reservation. Call in between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM. If you don't get the first seating at the sushi bar, you'll wait a good hour ~ hour and a half. I can't say if omakase is offered if you get seated at the table. The space is small. Better to make eating here a couples date night, with a party of 4 maximum. Besides sushi, they do offer a contemporary Japanese menu worth trying as well.
Vasty Overrated
I get really upset when I spend far too much money on average or sub-par food. Been to Ohshima 6 or 8 times in recent years. Used to think it was *4 star* sushi. No more. Done/ not going back.
Most offensive. Yellowtail and scallions roll. Frozen yellowtail. What?
Yuck! Yesterday's choppings. You could taste it. Vastly sub-par. Should have sent it back. Minus 1 star.
Bigger issue is- the fish is not exceptional. Just the opposite. I ordered a vast selection today and I was underwhelmed. Fresh, yes. But I've had world -class sushi for decades and - Ohshima ain't. Nothing stood out as exceptionally flavorful. Baby yellowtail? Meh. Bluefin tuna? C+ grade.
Their omacase? Each offering is slathered in a too- salty sauce.
It's the king's new clothes. They run an arrogant restaurant (lots of rules) so you think they must "have it going on". Placed often packed. Lots of Asians. Don't buy the hype.
Try Sushiland in Hacenda Heights. It's the real deal.
Ohshima will having you saying: "Oh" that was good
Highly touted Ohshima is on Tustin, just North of Taft in Orange.
We ordered the omakase (8 pieces inc seabream, cherry salmon, hotate, amberjack, seabass, bonito, black cod & big yellowtail belly). We also added uni, unagi and beef cheeks off the daily special. To wash it all down we had Rokkasen sake (a light, dry sake) and Asahi.
First of all, almost all the fish in the omakase was very fresh and expertly cut. Its what you would expect from this highly touted place. However, there was no creativity with the dishes. Most places offer a couple of items to showcase the sushi chef's artistic abilities. Lastly, the uni was rotten, and the unagi & beef cheeks were pretty pedestrian: 4 Stars.
Regarding the ambiance, its a small place with about 12 seats at the sushi bar. Getting a res is very difficult, so we opted to come @ 5:30 when it opened (I arrived early and was first in line for non-reservation customers). Nonetheless, we were seated right in front of our chef, who was nice, but didn't have much personality: 4 Stars.
I liked the service, esp when I had a party foul and broke my beer glass - LOL. However, my friend felt it was a little cold. Nonetheless, they comped my bday dessert: 4 Stars.
All in all, a very good experience. However, Ohshima has been touted as the best sushi in OC. I can think of at least two places I would prefer over Ohshima IMHO.
Great sushi
Excellent sushi and friendly staff .
The sushi was pre seasoned to perfection.
Marlin was seated.
I would definitely recommend this place.
Hole in the wall GEM!
I've spent twice as much for much less quality fare. Prepare to be amazed by this place. Don't be fooled by the location. Quality sakes! Quality sashimi! We tried 12 different dishes and none of them disappointed.

This is pretty close to authentic Japanese sushi. The atmosphere is very similar as well. With that being said, there is one crucial thing that separates Japanese and Californian sushi - proportions. In Japan, sushi has perfect proportion of rice and fish, in California so far every place we went to overloads rice with huge fish piece which throws of that balance. Same goes for this place, smaller fish piece and this sushi would be perfect! Sometimes less is more.

Very good and fresh traditional sushi joint. All fish is fresh and lots of selection. Love the fried octopus suckers (special) . The place is very small and in order to book a table or at sushi bar you need to call between 5-5:30 pm , or you have to wait in line to be seated (long line!!!!)
