It is high time that exquisite, yet down-to-earth dining, wine pairing and chatting with the artists who make it happen, is now available to mere mortals. Berlin's Nobelhart and Schmutzig have created the wondrous world in which this happens. Their incredible dining experience starts from the moment one approaches the absolutely uninviting shuttered front visage of the restaurant on the street. Hesitantly, one tries the door - locked - then presses a lonely looking buzzer. It opens after a moment and, as if entering another dimension, guests are brought into one of the warmest and most inviting cooking and dining atmospheres ever created by a restaurant concept. While carefully selected, relaxing LPs spin away on a turntable, the diners sit at a finely finished, and adequately wide wood dining bar which frames the open kitchen activities. The lighting is perfect for seeing your food and otherwise the lighting is gentle and in the best sense, shadowy and intimate. The kitchen itself - which is only about ten feet away - is well lit and the focus of the night's entertainment. The food-smart, engaging and attentive staff artfully combine the best local herbs, fruits, vegetables, fish and meat of this earth. The guest is encouraged to review one of the most amazing wine and beer (and schnapps!) lists ever presented in a restaurant. But thankfully, diners can relax in the experienced hands of the staff's suggested wine pairings which strategically change with every course. The whole dining experience takes place in a nest of intimacy in which one can enjoy the evening with one's own dining partner(s), as well as share in the experience with other diners (as I did). The well-informed, amiable and hip staff are not intrusive, but always there to give you some interesting information about the origins of the food and recipes (they make their own butter). Each staff member contributes to the guest's appreciation of the thought and care put into the night's amazing food and wine offerings. All staff, including the cooks, pass by and have a quick chat, present a course or pour more wine, before the night is over. The quiet grace and humour with which these people entertain their guests made me feel like I was happily thrust into a world existing exclusively for sharing a passion for high standard, off beat and unusual food and wine. The aromatic and diverse ten courses unfold at a casual pace. The cool and unruffled cooks and servers never looked rushed or harassed and the guests merely wait for the next fabulousness to savor and swallow. It was almost heartbreaking to know the magic was about to end when the last dessert course was served. Words truly cannot capture the atmosphere, food, human groove - and above all - their understanding of the importance of dining as a work of art. Congratulations to them all!
