Mr Chow East 57th Street New York Reviews from The Last Year

A group of 8 of us went to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a family friend. First of all, the restaurant is very small and there are not too many options to seat a large group so that was awkward. Next, the menu is pre fixe which was different than I expected. It's 120$/person and depending on the size of your party, you choose 1st and 2nd course dishes to share. Our group of 8 was told to choose 4 1st course dishes and 4 2nd course dishes. We chose lobster shumai, water dumplings, pot stickers, and the noodles. I will say that the 1st course dishes were fairly good ( I'd say 3 of 5 stars). For the 2nd courses we ordered chicken Joanne, sweet and sour pork, fireworks beef, and the chicken and walnut dish (I forgot the name). The second course also came with mixed vegetables and veggie rice. The rice smelled funny and was so bland! The veggies were cooked nicely, but no flavor at all! The chicken and walnut, firery beef, and sweet and sour pork were decent but could have had it at panda express for about the same flavor and waaaayyy less expensive! The chicken Joanne was one of the worst things I've ever eaten! It should be taken off the menu completely! Do not waste your time or money eating here....the food is unseasoned and basic. I hated spending 1200$ on the worst meal we had on our week long trip to NYC. We had much better meals for 1/4 of the price.
Average food.
Uncomfortable seating. Unreasonably overpriced Good service. Can't figure out why people go there
Overall: Amazing food.
We went with a super large group (14 people) and they were very helpful in ensuring everyone got to try everything. I'd certainly recommend for a special experience or a large group party, but wouldn't say it's somewhere I'd go to often. It's a place for an occasion - as it is very expensive. It seems to have a lot of bad reviews, which I don't agree with. Reservation: Invited by a friend, so I'm not sure how easy or difficult it was. Service: Very fun! The staff were very kind and entertaining. Ambiance: We sat inside and it's a nice restaurant. A bit loud but overall solid experience. Food: Amazing! Every bite was great and they were very accommodating to the group with various dietary restrictions. There was a ton leftover, so we luckily got to eat it for a few days!
I went to Mr Chows on Tuesday night.
I had my daughters graduation during the day. We came back to my apartment and had some appetizers since our dinner was in the evening. We were a party of seven. We arrived on time for our reservation. We were promptly seated next to Marth Stewart. The waiter gave us all menus, and it had a pre fix portion and a regular menu (same page) as an option, with appetizers, main dishes and sides. Since some of us were not that hungry we decided to order six main dish's, and four sides. When I gave the waiter the order, he stated that he would suggest and "insisted" that we order from the prefix menu, which was $115.00 per person. I told him we were not that hungry and we would stay with the order I was going to give him. He said, I need to talk to the manager. He came back and said he would take our order this time but next time if we don't order the prefix, we should not eat here. Understand, the restaurant was 50% empty. Our table would never have been filled that night. We all wanted to leave, but since we were there, lets just place our order. The food came out. It was very good. Very small portions. It was a sufficient amount for all of us. The bill was $400.00 as opposed to what the waiter wanted it to be at $800.00. When he gave me the check, I told him, the way he presented himself with my ordering, I found disgusting. I told him I have been to every restaurant, including Mr Chows in Miami. We were a family that was very dressed appropriately for the restaurant. I also told, you would never see me in his restaurant again, including everyone I know. Besides it's a very outdated restaurant, unfriendly staff. Their goal is to get you to spend a lot of money so the tip is double what it should be. We have many choices where to eat. If your goal is to rack up a large bill, with small dishes, this is your place. I do NOT recommend this place even for a special occasion. The guy selling hot dogs on the corner will give you more respect. If you don't care about decor, save your money and go to Wo Hop (China Town) by Limo. You will save a fortune and have had better food and service! We should have been welcomed into Mr Chows considering they were empty. Very empty! Instead, they left a bad taste in my mouth. Their attitudes were from a City, long ago. This City (NYC) doesn't warrant restaurants with attitudes. Those days ended ten years ago. They probably won't sign their next lease renewal because they are not doing the business they use to do. Gee. I wonder why??. Go elsewhere.

Great experience! The food is pricey but loved the experience & the wait staff was very attentive & spot on with the recommendations.
Delicious, very tasty meal, charming drinks and great service.
We had a wonderful experience from cocktails at the bar on arrival to all the delicious food and drinks during dinner. Our favourite thing was the noodles and the prawns. Really had a wonderful evening in very special surroundings. We'd highly recommend.
You gotta try Mr. Chow
The food is good but very expensive. My son took me here for my birthday. Nice atmosphere and great service. The staff were very attentive and they sang happy birthday eloquently. Great for celebrating special occasions.
Not as innovative and cutting edge as it once was, Mr.
Chow is solid, consistent and very good. Always great hospitality and service. The cocktails are excellent. The vibe is always great, particularly on Friday and Saturday evening. Not winning any prizes, always pricey, but still a treat.
Don't go to this place.
We had dinner at this restaurant with my friends. In the guides it is listed among the best in NY for Chinese cuisine. Our experience was very bad; poor quality food, we opted for a tasting menu for 4 even though we were 8 recommended by the waiter, but in the end there were 7 menus charged on the bill. The dishes were basic like in any Chinese restaurant in the world, poor quality and a very high bill (160 dollars each) - among the dishes there was a fish and in the end they brought us another type, justifying it by saying that they don't work fresh food. The service was also of a poor standard (they literally took the plate away from us even though some of us were still eating, they poured water, filling the glass to the brim and then charged 8 bottles to the bill). Furthermore, the place claims to be elegant but instead it is old and in very poor condition - the chairs and table were wobbly. In short, I don't recommend it. The current management is probably different than in the past considering the positive reviews, but currently it is not a place worthy of its fame.
Amazing food.
Crispy beef my favorite along with bok Choy. 10 for service. Everyone goes out of their way to accommodate all customers. As clean a restaurant as you will ever see. A little pricey, but this isn't bodega Chinese food. If you're ever in Vegas, try their location there. It's beautiful.
the horrible reviews foreshadow exactly how you'd expect
the horrible reviews foreshadow exactly how you'd expect this restaurant to be -- tacky, overpriced, outdated, and distasteful. food was okay but so scarcely portioned out and expensive ambiance was nice but tables were squished together in a confusing array. furniture is all quite old and falling apart especially in the bathroom the waiter kept pressuring us to do the tasting menu even though we wanted to go a la carte we were also asked to put down a credit card in the middle of the meal before being offered the chèque
The food was less than good but edible.
Nothing stood out. But for a place that expensive, there should be a dress code. There were children there with their feet on the seats, laying down, on iPads, and people in sweatsuits and sneakers. The fact that waiters had tuxes but the guests can wear anything brought down the ambiance for me. I cannot spend that kind of money for ok food and feeling like I'm eating in a food court.
Food is great here but pricy.
Worth the try. The service is good here. I will go back.
Never again
Although the food and drinks were good, the service was terrible. The wait staff doesn’t explain the menu, refuses to let you order single items, and pressures into the price fix overpriced menu leaving you with so much food leftover. Gluttony at its finest. They bully and intimidate you and I’m disappointed I gave them my money. We should have left after the first sign of it. Not worth it and there are plenty of other restaurants to enjoy in Manhattan without being treated that way. Stay away.
To flee
Terrible dinner. Arriving by chance in front of the restaurant on a Saturday evening, there were still free places on the terrace... we should have been careful. Super expensive dishes, extremely fatty, drowned in sweet sauce and chili certainly to mask the taste. Very very poor value for money for us. However, crowded restaurant, they must like it.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
