Supreme Tempura!
From beginning to end this was a wonderful experience in a beautiful setting. A word of caution to non-Japanese speakers, this restaurant isn’t well signposted and it is on the 3rd floor of a block. I found it by comparing the symbols on the sign to the website. The welcome is very warm. The staff are attentive and they will tell you if your approach to the consumption of food isn’t correct-don’t be upset-they are there to maximise the experience. The raw food is on display before the meal. And you can see you’re going to have the finest ingredients. Master Motoyoshi and his staff are very friendly and the food is awesome. Go with an empty stomach and be prepared for incredible food preparation and experience

Amazing, elegant, memorable dinner! Food was excellent, service was top notch, just totally redefined the tempura dining experience!

We booked through a Japanese online restaurant reservation service to get the reservation here, pretty well in advance of our trip. It is easy to think of fried food as being heavy and greasy but the preparation of the tempura batter, freshness of the ingredients, and presentation of the food made this a delicious, special evening. The restaurant is in the Shibuya district, on the 3rd floor of an unassuming building. The signage out front is only in Japanese. On getting off the elevator, there is a small waiting area and the chef will lead you into the restaurant at your seating time (guessing there are only 2 seatings/night). The restaurant was adorned with beautiful cherry blossom branches. A little bit of fresh snapper nigiri started the meal and the rest was tempura style. Our highlights were the shrimp heads, scallops, and onion though everything was just delicious. We do not speak Japanese and the chefs had some to little English so I missed the discussion and questions that are a part of these kind of meals but the service and staff was lovely. The food alone, however, is totally worth it.

This was such an enjoyable meal. Only 8 seats so book one month in advance. It was expensive, but it was worth it. Lovely service. Amazingly fresh produce. Highly highly highly recommend. We went to celebrate our anniversary and it was very special.
Be the first to ReplyThe best Tempura I ever had!
Probably the best Tempura I've ever eaten. Period. To be honest I was never a fan of Tempura because I thought they alwasy taste almost the same, just seafood / vegetables coated with the batter and deep fried so u get to eat the "crispy-fied" version of the food.
.
But Chef Motoyoshi redefines how Tempura should be made. His batter was really light, just enough to add a little crisp to the ingredients. It wasn't oily or greasy. It was very light, just enough to enhance the the freshness of the ingredients without masking their original flavours. I thought I could eat the tempura french beans forever, it tasted just like (or better than) fries!
.
Chef Motoyoshi is a really humble person. He would also interact with the guests and for every dish he'd advise you how to eat it (with salt / shouyu/ wasabi / have it plain).
.
We really lucky to get the 9pm sitting at Motoyoshi (booked 2 months prior to the trip) and by the time we were done, it was slightly past 11pm. Even though it was really late, we left with our stomach and hearts contented.
If you can get a reservation here, do it.
Fantastic restaurant. If you are American you probably think of tempura as some second class cuisine. This restaurant will dispel you of that thought. The food here is outstanding and inventive. We had fun going through the 20 course menu, with the chef indicating what condiments to use for each piece (often nothing). Only 8 seats and one seating per night. I reserved about a month or two in advance form the states using TableAll. Well worth the added expense. We have eaten at many fine restaurants (like The French Laundry in Yountville). This is right up there with them. I hope you get a seat!
Be the first to ReplyStar studded Tempura, flawlessly prepared! One of Tokyo's top!
This meal was undoubtedly hands-down, the eating highlight of my entire trip. Thank you once again to my Foodie friend who used his connection in securing a tough reservation for us…….albeit a late 9.00pm seating.
The ‘star quality’ tempura, prepared by this ever improving chef, encompassed all of the following attributes: eye opening, educational, delicious, fun!....and oh! lots of food!!
We knew for sure we will be in for a treat when upon entering the restaurant, we saw one of Tokyo’s most famous sushi chef – Sawada san and his wife sitting at the same counter as us?! For our Master Tempura Chef to have such an elite fellow compatriot chef as a patron would mean only one thing, he will have to go out of his way to create a flawless meal for his patrons and friends! Well, our prediction and observation was spot-on. The meal was indeed border line on perfection. Seldom have I heard so many Oohs, Aahs and Oishis uttered by fellow patrons!
From the initial dainty offering of a minuscule edible foliage leaf, to the never ending offerings of pristine fresh seafood and wide array of organic vegetables….all cooked and covered expertly by just a kiss of crispy, non-greasy batter, to the final offering of the rice dish…. whereby customers have the options of picking a bowl the size of a half orange to that of a giant bike helmet. Every morsel that was delicately placed on our plate was flawlessly crafted and marvelous to eat. The only downside was the slightly smallish size of the fresh prawns. If only they could be bigger or the chef would offer us a few more?! Ha!
We left the restaurant together with Sawada san and wife, absolutely stuffed and satisfied! Unfortunately, the day long rain was still pouring. To our total surprise, Sawada san offered and insisted that we take their taxi! What a fine and classy gentleman. For good or bad, for sure he will remember us the next time we dine at his place! Ha! :D
Best tempura
it is a very small place with a cozy interior, 2 chefs/staff serve u right in front of you at the counter.
20 courses of Tempura, each piece fried in a different ways, chef explaining u how to eat, what to dip for each... without alcohol it was 20000yen it’s definitely a reasonable price with amazing experience.
Gastronomic tempura journey
A very small restaurant with only 8 seats, therefore booking is necessary. We were looking forward to a gastronomic journey - tempura style. Expensive and a good delightful experience to taste. The chef makes the batter and fry it in front of us, and very deftly plate it at the same time. The dipping sauce is delicately flavored. Our variation of tempura consists of:
-Gingko nut which is eaten with fine salt
-Crunchy prawn legs
-Prawns
-Asparagus
-Whiting fish
-Mushroom
-Shitake mushroom
-Baby Tuna
-Green pepper
-Egg plant with dressing
-Lotus roots
-Ginger flower with leek
-Anago
-Sweet potato
-Rice with prawn fritters (you can select the bowl size and there was about 8 different
bowl sizes)
-Dessert
Seems a lot but everything was in small bite pieces, therefore you would not feel too full. Towards the end, if you are still hungry, you can always select the large bowls which will definitely fill you up.
Chef Motoyoshi is friendly and works skillfully. His English is very minimal but he was able to explain each dish. After our meal, he walked us out and personally thanked us for coming.
Transcendant
While I'll admit this is the first proper tempura place I have ever been to, I can't imagine another one being any better. The chef is a marvel to watch and the atmosphere is so intimate and warm. The sound of the cooking oil crackling as the battered pieces fall in is pure zen. And the batter is so crispy and light, 'like buttah'. Personal favorites were the prawns and shrimp, and the scallop. Definitely go for the full omakase - i'm sure uni lovers will die for the cherry blossom leave deep fried with uni on top - i'm not a big fan personally but even I must admit it was divine. Definitely worth a michelin star, and probably 2 at some point - a great start to my food mecca to Tokyo.
