Hands down the best high end Indian food anywhere.
When we visit from California we look forward to an excellent meal and this is the place. First of all, the cauliflower is phenomenal! It was recommended with our samosa appetizer and it was so good I ordered another' for myself. I could have been very happy just eating it, the sauce was a touch spicy and just delicious. The tamarind sauce is so so good with samosas or on top of my chicken masala...also really good. Butter chicken was also very good. Someone got the lamb chops and was very happy with their choice. Dito for the tandoori chicken. My niece got the shrimp curry and loved her dish too. We were too full for dessert but couldn't stop raving our entire meal about how delicious it was. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyStaff were really friendly.
That is the best quality based on dining experience here. The original restaurant in India claims to be the original creator of butter chicken. Wall Street Journal pushed an article in 2/24 about the 1 original owners suing each other for the title. Anyway, if this is the quality of their butter chicken, I would not sue. Waste of legal fees as the chicken was ok. Not great. Dry and not flavourful. There are better butter chicken in NYC. Sorry, original does not mean the best.

After hearing this was a popular chain in India, I had visions of an Indian Din Tai Fung or Ootoya. And that's pretty much the experience we got: slightly upscale, good quality Indian food in an elegant setting where you would feel equally comfortable bring a first date or your mother. - Khasta Aloo Tikki: Scrumptious - crispy aloo patties, sweet yogurt, mint sauce - Gafari Shorba: Tastes more or less like cream of chicken soup with some diced apples for crunch. Could've been more interesting if they'd added some spices. - Murgh Makhani : Is this the best butter chicken I've had? No. But it's not bad. The curry was spot on; the chicken was overcooked. - MMD Signature Chicken: Got this by accident, but I wasn't sad about it. The chicken was super tender and the curry was complex. - Lobster Masala: Not bad, though it's hard to top Semma's lobster dish. - Shahi Tukda: Whatever you do, leave room for dessert. We loved this so much, we got it twice. Flavor profile: caramom, pistachios, cream (like many Indian desserts). Delish. If you're stuck on the Upper Boring Side, don't settle for one of the overpriced, generic Italian restaurants in the area. Come here. Experience flavor.
Be the first to ReplyI wanted to try more Indian places after getting some great
I wanted to try more Indian places after getting some great butter chicken at a resort in DR a few months ago. Came here with a friend, each of us ordered murgh makhani (Butter Chicken) and we split some goat biryani and some butter naan. The naan was fine, though not great. The flavor of the butter chicken was right but the chicken itself was either old or overcooked. While the goat in the biryani was a tiny bit dry I am not going to rate this too low because I forgot to make sure to ask if there was cilantro in it, there was, and i stopped eating it. I will add that, it wouldn't kill them to add ingredients to a menu. Speaking of menus, It has been 3 years since Covid. Time to bring back real menus. The place looked homey and inviting. Service was also fine.
Be the first to ReplyJust right from the start: The food is good, no problem
Just right from the start: The food is good, no problem with that. Service and ambiance also good. The issue of this place is that they try to suck the dollars out of your pocket at every corner. First, they put a bottle of water on the table that is not for free. Second, rice is not included in main dishes which are not cheap to begin with. They charge $6 for one portion of rice, which you only learn when you see the final bill. Simply outrageous. Third, the portions of main dishes are barely enough. If you come in really hungry, it will not be sufficient. Fourth, when you pay they don't do a paper check but bring a digital device to the table. They obviously use this method to try to rush the payment. First they show you the list of items on the bill and a total amount without tax. The prices look unsuspicious - aside from the fact that you were not expecting a charge for rice. Then the minimum default tip shown on the device is 20%. I know that many places start doing this. But what is completely inexcusable is that they calculate the 20% from the taxed total. That is fraud, plain and simple. In the end, a meal for two that you expected to be max $70 comes in at $92. That's no good. Any customer who realizes what's happening here is rightfully upset. We will not be returning. We don't like to be fooled
Be the first to ReplyMy dish was ready at the estimated time for pick-up.
The staff was polite during my quick exchange. The Rarha Gosht (minced lamb meat masala) was $28 (including tax) on Grubhub for a dish that was hardly 2 cups worth!! While the dish was filled entirely of meat, the portion to cost ratio was absurd. The dish was filled with flavor, spice, and complemented well with rice and naan.
Be the first to ReplyGood, not great, and with the atmosphere and price, I had
Good, not great, and with the atmosphere and price, I had been hoping for more. Moti Mahal was recommended by a friend of mine as a good place to take some friends for a special occasion. On arrival, things were looking good. The table we had reserved was spacious, the atmosphere was cozy and quiet (conducive to catching up with friends). My only complaint out of the date, was that on a cool night, the interior was very very hot. I tend to run hot though, so I'm willing to give a pass on that. Given the heat, as soon as I sat down, I poured myself a glass of water from the bottle sitting on the table. We then scanned the QR code and started looking at the drinks menu. I understand that menus were hard to keep clean during Covid, but given that we are now all back to dining in a tight space, I'm not a fan of being asked to read a menu on my phone. Especially at a nice place. Having my phone out makes it feel like a work lunch, generally just makes it feel like fast food. When the server came by to take our drink orders, we were also informed that the bottle on the table wasn't just how they dispense water, it was optional and they charge for it. I HATE this kind of trick. If there is something on the table when I set down, sitting right next to the glasses, I'm going to assume it is there for me to drink. I want to give them a 1 star review I dislike this so much, but that would not be fair. After we ordered our bottle of wine, we caught up until the server came by to do the awkward dance around tasting the bottle. Not opposed to this, it's common practice, but it seems crazy to me that they still do this but can't be bothered to give us printed menus. We then ordered the food (with some confusion) and had our meal. The food itself was unremarkable. Not bad, but given the atmosphere and price, portions were small and flavor wasn't as strong as I would have liked. All in all, I would consider takeout from here but would not eat in person again.
Be the first to ReplyIf you want an authentic Indian restaurant in the city then
If you want an authentic Indian restaurant in the city then look no further. Literally one of the only few places that have locations in India and they are the proud inventors of butter chicken. If you don't know what that is. Walk in. Talk to a staff member. Order the dish. And prepare to have your world changed forever. The ambiance is very authentic as well and as are the servers and chef. Highly recommend.

Apparently this is a chain in India and London? Anyway, it certainly does not feel like a chain at all. Inside it is tastefully decorated, you can make reservations, and the setting is intimate. We tried the butter chicken, known as their signature dish, and the lobster masala. The chicken does not comes with rice and the lobster came with a tiny lump of jazzed up basmati rice (no idea else how to describe it)which was enough for me because I also had my meal with some garlic naan. Otherwise, an order of rice is good for 2 people, maybe three is your are not overdoing it with the rice. Both dishes were a little spicy, but not overwhelming. The lobster was served in the tail cut up into small chunks in its fragrant sauce. I would come here again if in the area.
Be the first to ReplyWe've been in this neighborhood for a bit more than 2 1/2
We've been in this neighborhood for a bit more than 2 1/2 years, and whenever we walk by this place, it's busy. We have a perfectly good Indian restaurant a block away from our home, but I've wanted to try this one. Saturday night, we wanted dinner and a walk, so without a res we decided to just go and take our chances. No problem, as t turned out! The ambiance is upscale, soft lighting, soft music, white tablecloths. There's a small dining room with a bar, but clever decor with mirrors makes it seem larger. Then there's an indoor/outdoor space that is indoors but like a glassed-in porch. Pretty, and comfortable. My only negative is that darn QR-code menu. Call me old-school, but I like a printed one. Perhaps if we'd asked, they have that, but we do have phones and we do know how to use them, so w rolled with it. I'd say vegetarian menu options are maybe a dollar or so more than usual, and they are a bit different than the usual, but the food is really really good! There are several appetizers. We often order a bhel puri chaat as a shared appetizer. Here it's quite different, called dahi puri chaat. It was 5 small filled shells, with yogurt and chickpeas and a few pomegranate seeds. They were delicious! When I told our server that we really liked it, she suggested that next time we try their palak patta chaat, so we will. My husband's entree was called subz panchmael, a "vegetable mรฉlange" in a garlic tomato masala. He's not a spice guy, and the server explained that everything is medium but could be adjusted, so he asked for and received a mild sauce. His go-to is usually chana saag but here they list only saag paneer, so he stepped out of his comfort zone and was very impressed! I often get baingan bharta but the eggplant dish here is called chatpate baingan. Rather than the usual mush, this has distinct chunks of soft, melt-y, eggplant in an excellent flavorful sauce. I like spicy and had told the server when she took our order, and my dish had a tingly kick to it. Yum! I'd overheard our server at another table talk about lemon rice, so we ordered that. Pricey, but really unique and tasty. We also had 1 order of roti, which was delivered warm and a bit crisp at the edges, just perfect Chose not to order any dessert (& only tap water), but we had a fantastic meal and lovely service, in a beautiful atmosphere. We'll definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyUpper End Indian restaurant with tasty dishes that are on
Upper End Indian restaurant with tasty dishes that are on the expensive side given the small quantities served. Although it is definitely worth going if in the mood, you can't expect to feast without running a large bill. $19 a dish. 4.5/5 stars as a dinner spot.
Be the first to ReplyI have dined in a few times and gotten take out a few times.
This has previously been my go to neighborhood spot but the last few times I have been I noticed the portions are getting smaller and the prices are going up! I ordered a tandoori chicken yesterday for takeout and they gave me 3 small pieces! Mostly bone, for nearly $20. The food is good, yes, but in my opinion not worth the expense. I will be looking elsewhere next time I'm craving Indian food.

This place is PHENOMENAL! The lamb appetizer, the butter chicken, the naan (any flavor)-- all delicious! The service is just as great. Cannot wait to go back to this place.
Be the first to ReplyFood was great.
Portion sizes were a bit small - could have been better. Also the tables for 2 were extremely cramped. There is no way 2 people can dine in comfort with their entrees and plates in those micro sized tables. Menu is difficult to read. Not well structured. Service was great. Probably will return for the food taste.
Be the first to ReplyThis is hard to write, but after almost a decade, it seems
This is hard to write, but after almost a decade, it seems the sheen is finally wearing off from Moti Mahal. I don't know if it's the pandemic or the fact that Gaurav Anand has a new baby in Baazi, but the quality of food has gone down and it doesn't seem to be bouncing back. The dal is now absolute garbage. The recipe is different, with chana dal thrown in and barely any simmering to get the right texture. The signature dish is a shell of its former self, and the interior of the restaurant also looks like it was abandoned a few years ago. I loved this place more than literally any other restaurant in the country and have spent thousands of dollars here over the past decade, which is why no one is sorrier than me to see it for what it is these days. If you're looking for good dal makhani, go somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyFour star food, standard Indian.
Beware, they present Square online payment tablet with tips suggestions calculated including tax. I'm happy to tip on the bill but tipping on NY taxes is wrong.
Be the first to ReplyBeen looking for an Indian restaurant here that can live up
Been looking for an Indian restaurant here that can live up to the standards of Indian restaurants I've had before. Have to say Moti Mahal Delux surpassed expectations and has definitely met the standards. Golgappa shots are definitely fun and worth getting. Butter chicken really lived up to the hype, and lamb chops are tender and well seasoned. Aloo gobi was wonderfully done and a much needed addition to all the other meat dishes.
Be the first to ReplyThe lamb biryani was amazing, perfectly spiced.
Saag creamy and unique flavors. Very pleased!
Be the first to ReplyWalked in without a reservation and we're seated right away.
Waiting staff was very friendly. Beautiful ambience and the food was delicious. I recommend the subz panchmael and the paneer makhani. I think this place is, without a doubt, the best Indian food on the upper east side (and I have tried everywhere around the area)!
Be the first to ReplyBest Indian food on the UES.
Excellent staff, extremely taste food. And even a very nice ambiance inside. This is my go-to spot.
Be the first to ReplyOrdered takeout since we are down the block.
.. the pick up was a bit confusing since you actually go outside the business to the back and walk into the kitchen. Whatever they are doing their best I guess, but it took a few minutes for someone to even notice I was waiting? Maybe they were just busy, it happens... (-1/2 star)Roti bread was getting cold when I got home. (Literally 1 block away, and I picked up within 5 minutes of getting the "food is ready" notice). (-1/2 star) Then we found a long black hair in the saag dish, though we did get a refund from Grubhub, found that fairly disgusting. I get it, hair happens, but it was VERY long and noticeable. (-2-3 stars)I will say overall dishes are on the expensive side and have quite small portions as well... three very small samosas are 11$? Side of rice, 5$? Crazy. (Also note, samosas lack flavor overall and rice needed salt to bring out any flavor). I will say I did find cardamom pods in the rice, which is actually a good sign of closer to authentic cooking...Two hours later, having major stomach problems and nausea. I didn't even eat the saag dish but had a bit of the Chana Ma and the daal and still had major issues. (-2 stars)TLDR: I would skip this place and opt for another cuisine. Your mind, bathroom, and wallet will thank you.
Be the first to ReplyCame here with my boyfriend last night.
It was my first time eating Indian food that wasn't just Indian takeout and my boyfriend had never had Indian food before. It was AMAZING! Everything we got was so flavorful and delicious from apps to dessert. We got a cute little corner seat and were able to get in without a reservation which we were so thankful for. Will be back
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service and food exceptional! Relaxing atmosphere.
Also felt safe to dine here in these pandemic times.

I haven't had too much experience with Indian food and my friend recommended this place. ย She ordered everything...and I was along for the ride. ย The shooters at the start were good with some being spicier than others...I do zero spice, like hot, mouth on fire, so I was glad to have other people try before diving in. ย I don't recall what we ordered for food, but it was all delicious. ย Even the desserts were good. ย I'll be back for sure!
