Expensive but worth it.
Every time I come here it's such great food!!!! The ambiance and staff are great ....as a local this is a spot I will always go to!
Be the first to ReplyI take my mom here every so often.
The food is very good and the price is higher-end but reasonable. The decor is nice and it's a generally comfortable place. The service, however, is not the best. "Condescending" comes to mind. I can make my way through much more exotic menus and I have a decent competency in wine, but my mom likes things explained, which perhaps is the issue. Maybe their recent reviews have gone to their heads but I don't go into a place like this to be treated like a farmer straight off the turnip truck.

Went in to check out the Happy hour/Dinner from a suggestion from my huge foodie group. What a horrible experience, first we sit at the bar and this bartender with blue hair is completely overwhelmed with 2 people sitting at the bar and maybe a server asking for a few drinks. We could hear her complaining about management. So we order 2 Vodka tonics with a splash of cranberry. The bartender tells us she can't make those drinks because she does not have "Well Vodka" so she says "I can only go by my computer for "well drinks " it says Rum or tequila. So we ordered 2 tequila sunrises and she puts tequila on ice and walks away? So we are waiting for 2-5min with these 2 cups of tequila and ice in front of us. So we leave. What a weirdo restaurant. The bartender made a point to tell us this Happy hour is ending soon and that it's been a nightmare because the management does not give her the information she needs to do her job. I will let my foodie group this is definitely a pass when in Monterey!! Please give her some vodka WTF?

Service was excellent, the atmosphere is spectacular and the food is phenomenal. If you don't get the Budino for dessert you will regret it for the rest of your life. This is our first time here...... it won't be our last.

It's a nice environment with an elegant setting, and the food is good, but don't plan on making it a regular place because the menu can get stale
Be the first to ReplyFood was okay.
Not worth the wait. Staff was friendly. They sat us outside. Next to a dumpster. They never brought our drinks and still tried charging us for them. The manager was no where to be found. Never again.

As a local this is one of my favorite restaurants!! The scallops are to die for. The service is fantastic with the kindest people working there. The first time I ate there was after the renovation and it looks great. Can't recommend this place enough.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible.
Our server (I can't remember his name) was so fun and charismatic; passionate people truly do make the dining experience more enjoyable. The owner was also there helping out and hosting. Wonderful lady! The food was delicious. The cocktails were on point. We tried a little of everything and all of it was perfection. Highly recommend any of the steaks and the scallops. Thank you, Montrio, for a beautiful meal across the board!

My wife and I stopped by on a Thursday night right at 4:30 when they're starting their open. The bar is the only spot available for service between 4:30-5 as the rest of the kitchen and restaurant are still getting up and running. Fabio, the bartender, was excellent. He's super knowledgeable about each cocktail and was a wealth of knowledge around all things mixology. The special 1890 cocktail was called Agua de Flores which really reminds me of a riff on an Aperol spritz but the base is a hibiscus syrup which reminds me of Agua de Jamaica which I'm a big fan of. It was just the right balance of tart, tangy, and sweet. A beautifully crafted cocktail and a STEAL at $1.89. Yes, you read that right. Less than 2 bucks! We also tried a Pistachio Horchata cocktail which was also "good" but not amazing in my opinion ($10 during happy hour). A bit too sweet for my liking but still an objectively good cocktail. The 1890 featured appetizer was a Housemade Shrimp Eggroll. The outside shell was super light and crispy, almost TOO crispy, but the shrimp inside was still tender and not over cooked. The orange sauce that is drizzled on it is awesome. Some sort of mayo based aioli. Multiple guests asked for more of the sauce to add to their other appetizers because it was so good. The Braised Short Rib Sliders were EXCELLENT. The brioche bun is fresh, soft, light, and airy, while still having a good chew to it. The meat itself was juicy and tender and the slaw added that needed touch of acidity to balance out the richness. The mussels and frittes (yes, fries), were solid and the broth they were in was decadent. The mussels were tender and melted in your mouth which I really applaud because so many places overcook them and turn them into little balls of rubber. Putting the fries on top of the dish may make for a nice presentation but is an odd choice because they'll inadvertently get soggy from the steam coming up from the mussel broth. They'd be better presented on the side in one of those small serving cups. For dessert, we tried the bread pudding which was on top of a rich butterscotch sauce with shaved white chocolate and served with a scoop of passion fruit ice cream on top. I initially scoffed at a bread pudding being served at a "higher end" restaurant but I'm glad my wife decided to go with this dessert because I was thoroughly impressed. Soft and chewy at the center but those toasted / burnt edges on top added some nice texture contrast. The passion fruit ice cream was a great compliment to how rich the pudding and sauce were and it was also nice on its own. Montrio bistro is truly too notch from service, ambience, and food and I'm excited to come again soon.
Be the first to ReplyThe Whole experience was weird.
My kids were treating me to a birthday dinner. We were there on 1/13/2024. We had no reservations but were seated quickly. Unfortunately, I don't have the names of anyone. Our server came - she seemed friendly enough at first. I asked her a question about the special fish - She said Salmon and I asked her how was it cooked. She said she would like the 3rd person of our party to come back (my son was using the restroom). So that she would not have to explain the process again. I said we could tell him when he came back and I was pretty sure he would not order the salmon. Anyway food-wise - my son ordered the Venison Osso Buco ( Which was pretty decent). My daughter ordered the Short ribs - which was also not bad. My salmon the so called special was just ok. The beans and spinach had a real tart taste but ok not bad. The salmon itself to me did not appear fresh - the flesh was not firm and kind of had a loose mushy texture. The appetizers - crab cakes also were just ok. The presentation was good with microgreens but it had an aftertaste of whatever oil they had fried it in. The beet salad had 4 pieces of mixed golden and red beets with micro greens. We also ordered a bottle of Malbec. Ok, it was not the most expensive wine but it was $50. Most Malbecs we have had are great. We took a sip of it and it tasted like Barnyard Manure. Literally, if we held our breath and did not exhale after sipping it - then we could swallow. We gave the benefit of the doubt and thought it required breathing. No change! So we called the server and said we did not like the wine. So she called the General Manager (GM). He politely heard our problem - swilled it around expertly took a sip and said the wine was tasting as intended - since it was an organic wine - it was heavy; had the taste of forest floor and had some other descriptions - which to me was just like sheep smell the barnyard smell. He suggested decanting it- which we did and it was as bad. THen they asked if we wanted something else but did not bother to bring the menu back. The server came and told us she loved that wine - so I invited her to drink it after work because we did not want to touch it. We were so disgusted by this time we did not order dessert and even though they knew it was my birthday - they brought nothing out and to add insult to injury they did not take out the charge for the wine even though the entire decanted wine was on the table. It's not like we were consuming it. My kids were paying and they felt bad not to leave any tip. To me, the wine was my tip but they still left something. I can say this much - IT WAS NOT A FINE DINING EXPERIENCE. The server was friendly superficially but she was speaking slowly and showed her annoyance at us. On our way out the GM had the audacity to wish me a happy Birthday. WOW Never going back here. Go only if you like OK food at high prices and bad tasting MAlbecs.

A very special night thanks to Don and Snow! A trio of oysters with compressed cucumber and salmon roe was the first stop on an unforgettable food journey! Monterey's finest Salmon on a bed of roasted corn, butternut squash, bacon and early harvest fava beans earned its chef's special status! A trio of raspberry sorbet and vanilla and strawberry gelato sent us off on a sweet note to celebrate our 40th anniversary! We will definitely return!

Very clean beautiful elegant restaurant with great service and very good food I suggest on a busy night to make reservations

Great setting and food. I would have liked a little more duck but it is hard to complain when yo realize what Covid did to restaurants

The staff was very friendly and accommodated us with no reservations. Restaurant was very busy but the service was top notch. Appetizers, salad and main course all perfectly spaced time wise. Both the Pork Chop an d Braised Short Ribs were as good as they can be. Looking for a date night or just an enjoyable evening. Great place.
Be the first to ReplyI dined here for Valentine's dinner.
I was excited to eat here since it was under new ownership and the chef had a great resume. Well let's just say that $597 later I was laughing. This was one of the worst meals I have ever had. Especially for a restaurant in the Michelin guide.First off we ordered 2 cocktails which were excellent. The Cara Cara Collins and I do not remember the second. We also ordered a bottle of wine .Sea Smoke Ten Pinot Noir. I asked the server to let it breathe. I was not given a taste to see if I liked it or not. So once the server left. I poured a taste. It was beautiful. The best part of the meal .My girlfriend ordered the Onion Soup GratineeIt was okay at best. I ordered the risotto. Let's just say that there was no flavor, very flat. I asked our server for some salt. I tried to salt it for more flavor but nothing. I think they used dishwater instead of stock. So just to make it quick I ordered Onion Soup Gratinee. The wine we ordered made it that much betterThe server did not pour any wine. I had to myself. Also he kept calling me BOSS. At a restaurant of this caliber I would not expect that. The service needs some serious work. Our entrees finally arrived after about 25 minutes between courses. We had the Sea Scallops and replaced the cous cous with the risotto(before knowing how inedible it was) my girlfriend is gluten free. The scallops came out with the beards attached which should be the first thing to be cleaned off the scallop( not sure how the chef let that go out of the kitchen like that) the dish was okay at best. I ordered the C.A.B 14 oz NY Strip medium rare, it came out medium. The pressed Gruyรจre potato was flavorless and under cooked the potatoes still almost raw. The garlic spinach was flavorless as well. The sauce Bordelaise was not even close to one it was more like a generic Demi-glacรฉ.The manager walked by and asked how everything was. We had just received our entrees . I said okay but the beards were attached to the scallops. I had them on a b&b. He rushed off with them and said oh that's a rookie move or something to that effect.I didn't want to bother him because I could see how busy he was and I didn't want to waste his. I figured I would call them on Wednesday to have a talk with him. ( I called Wednesday and left a message and still not have had a response. Today is Friday. He could have avoided this 1 star review by returning my call)We had dessert. 2 glasses of tawny 20 yr old port which were yummy. Also ordered the flourless chocolate cake and the bread pudding. They were good.I would say stay away from this place. Not much has changed except for the prices.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful dining experience.
The upgraded upstairs is comfortable. Our server was Cali who was very attentive and helpful. The food and drinks were also great. Such a perfect night!
Be the first to ReplyNot sure if it was Valentine's day being a busy day or what
Not sure if it was Valentine's day being a busy day or what it may have been but our experience was extremely disappointing. My partner treated us to dinner at this restaurant, thinking it'd be a worth-it valentine's dinner - it definitely wasn't. We were both starving so we were eager to have a delicious dinner, instead we had a bland one. From the $25 for two minuscule crab cakes, to a bland chicken & beef entrees/sides. All of which was definitely not worth the pricey tab. We left early to make it to Revival ice cream nearby that made up for the lack of flavor here. Extremely disappointed, that 1 star can go to our nice waitress.
Be the first to ReplySave yourself! We made reservations for a milestone
Save yourself! We made reservations for a milestone birthday and it sucked. We used to love this place and who knows what happened. Food... if you could call it that...started off with bad bread that fell apart when you buttered it. The chicken came out still clucking raw in the middle. When it came back from the kitchen it was the same chicken breast and we are unsure if the raw juice remained underneath with the gnocchi and carrots. The field greens side salad, that we were told were the same as the small plate was nothing but 5 pieces of fancy lettuce with a side of olive oil. Nothing was discounted from our tab and no dessert for the birthday! WTH!

Our friends invited us to have dinner and what a surprise! From the appetizers to the dessert this was such a pleasant and tasty experience.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was fantastic.
I had one of the best swordfish meals of my life. Our toddler devoured the arctic char. The wait staff was super attentive and friendly. I can't say enough about this dining experience. We've been driving up the coast from Los Angeles and this restaurant makes up for all the nonsense tourist seafood restaurants this town offers. This is real deal seafood in Monterey. Highly recommend it!

This place is AMAZING! Perfect for a date, anniversary, visit with old friends, cocktails on a Friday night. Everything is delicious here. We had the wood-fired octopus, the seared sea scallops and the seared fillet mignon and we couldn't stop talking about how good it was. This is a moan-worthy restaurant. The sea scallops were cooked to perfection. The filet mignon is the best I have had in years! I didn't mention the cocktails, but they were also perfect: we had a boulevardier and an old fashioned. Please bring your friends and family here--they will be so happy you did!
Be the first to ReplyWent there for our special anniversary dinner.
Ordered the crab cake for appetizer. Full of crab. Husband had the wagyu ribeye and I ordered the filet mignon. ย Mine was slightly overcooked ( ordered medium rare) but was still tender. All the food was good along with the service. House made desserts came with candles to celebrate the occasion.
