Christmas magic
This is an architectural gem with spanish roots in Riverside. Walking in side the inn is like entering a labyrinth of spiral staircases, hidden hallways, and secret courtyards surrounded by lush landscaping, truly spectacular! if you're interested in a romantic getaway, look no further... Probably no surprise, that a place that looks like this has had it's share of famous people. From President Roosevelt to Clark Gable and many others. You can take guided tours (which I highly recommend). For me the best time to come is Christmas time, as the Inn becomes a breath-taking scene with 1000's of lights. However I should warn you with this also comes many many crowds.... but so worth it. Spend the night and see how the rich and famous live.

1) Aside from it being pretty, I have nothing good to say. My room was in a back corner and it sounded like a party was going on next door. It was so loud I knew I wasn't going to get any sleep. 2) They do not have a room service menu and do not advertise that they even have it. I discovered that they did and not only did I have to send the food back, but it was $10 more than what was listed on the menu. 3) The customer service was subpar and I get that this is a "historic" hotel, but we can close it down now. I managed my expectations and this was the worst hotel stay I've ever had. I checked out 3hrs after arrival. It wasnt worth anymore of my time or money.
Be the first to ReplyCancelling my reservation
I wish I could give this place a 0 zero. I booked 2 raincross rooms last summer for March 14 thru March 17 2024. This was for a family outing. We r from New Jersey. My nephew family and us are meeting my other nephew who lives in riverside California. I paid for our flights for a van and bought 10 tickets to Disney land. I get a call from mission inn 18 days before we r to fly out. I was told that the hotel was overbooked and could I change the dates that I was going to the mission. I told them absolutely not since everything was paid for. So I thought that was the end. 3 days later I get another call now telling me that I would not be able to check in on March 14 but would be able on March 15 due to maintenance issue. Liar liar. I told them that was unacceptable. But instead of trying to work with me I was told that either I check in on the 15th or she would cancel my entire reservation. I then told her that this was not due to maintenance but the hotel was overbooked. She told me that was not true. So I asked her I got a call 3 days earlier that told me that was the case. I have bee going to the mission inn since 2015. I go every year. But I guess this isn’t very important to management that they have loyal customers. Well not anymore. It’s unfortunate that the mission inn doesn’t care about their customers only about money. I have written them twice about this and I have yet to hear from them. So in my opinion book another hotel in riverside. Don’t bother booking at the mission inn since u won’t know if your reservation is cancelled. Thank goodness I was able to get rooms at courtyard by Marriott. My vacation won’t be ruined because of the rudeness and inconsiderate way the mission inn treated us. Stay away
Be the first to ReplyMission Inn Leaves You Without a Room If Someone Else Reserves at a Higher Room Rate
I made my reservation at the Mission Inn 2 months in advance to attend a conference in Riverside. I've been staying there for years when I travel to Riverside and always loved the hotel. This year, 2 weeks prior to the conference, the hotel canceled my reservation because they were able to book other conference attendees at a higher rate. To make it more insulting, they sent me an email stating that they canceled my reservation per my request. I made no such request and was not able to get any of the management to return my calls. If the Mission Inn has to cancel reservations due to overbooking, they should cancel a more recent reservation than mine, but clearly they don't care if they leave me without a room at the last minute, in favor of another guest willing to pay more as the event got closer in time. Bad business, regular customer lost!

Had a pretty rough stay. We purchased a RainCross room because they said they were out of the lower level rooms. this increased the price of our stay. When we got there, they said they were out of RainCross rooms and put us in a lower level room at the RainCross price. The room the first night was next to the street and the noise level was unbelievable through the whole night. After several attempts , they put us in another room the next day that was almost half the size with a broken refrigerator. We called everyday to get it replaced and they said they would be right up. We never received a working one. I said something to the manager at check out about our experience and she said she would take a look at our bill later in the day. After returning home...I called several times and left messages. No one has ever called me back nor was money refunded for staying in the lower level room.
Be the first to ReplyCharming as a museum, terrible as a hotel
This is basically a beautiful old museum trying to function as a hotel. Its architecture is something to behold, so fascinating especially during the Festival of Lights. The hotel aspect of it (amenities, servíce, etc), however, is much less impressive. The rooms are due for a refresh, wear and tear are visible everywhere, musty odors, leaky roofs (buckets in hallway to catch drips!) etc, all expected from an old and poorly maintained hotel. All that may be tolerable if only the service was good and paid attention to meeting customers needs instead of relying on just the charm of the hotel to keep customers happy. The charm wore off quickly for me when I settled in my room and realized there was no hairdryer in our room, only one bathrobe, paltry toiletries, leaky faucets, no sheer drapes over our windows just blackout drapes, housekeeping seems to be by request they never came to clean/tidy up our room during our two nights stay even though we requested it. Then they charge $9.95 for Wi-Fi when it’s free in most hotels. The staff were mostly indifferent, tired, didn’t look engaged doing their job, maybe they’re understaffed. Overall, it’s a fascinating historical place, lovely architecture and museum but as a hotel it’s a major fail. They need to pay attention to that part of it. It’s sad how this charming hotel is like an old pretty lady hanging on to its beauty through lots of make up but inside it’s withering. Certainly not good value for the money. Visit the hotel, admire the architecture then stay elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyThe Hotel of Deferred Maintenance!
I'm sure at one time this hotel was lovely, charming, and unique. In 2024, it is in such need of repair and attention that it is really not worth staying at. My daughter and I spent one night there in mid February. We arrived at 4:30 and the line for check-in was at least 45 people deep. We went out, returned at 7pm, and the line was about 10 deep. But that's not the point of my poor review (although they really should deal with that check-in line!). The point is that they upgraded us because they'd given away our reserved room (a Mission King). The new room was a "Presidential Suite." We were excited! Until we exited the elevator on the fourth floor (the suites are in a strange part of the hotel...outside and surrounding the courtyard). Everything up there looked so rickety and broken-down (one staircase leading to a sort of terrace area has a sign: DO NOT USE STAIRCASE!), we were afraid to walk too close to the edge. Our room absolutely reeked of damp--from either a leak or the previous weekend's rains? To compensate, they'd left the AC on 60 degrees. (Even though it was cold--like 43 degrees-- outside!) I turned off the AC, and hoped to open a window. But all the windows are painted shut. The room itself was bizarre: a strange locked-off staircase led to a balcony and tiny room (within our own room!), an odd mildewy seating area with a very ancient gas fireplace, two doors that were locked (who knows where they led?), and a bathroom that hadn't been touched since 1987. The furniture is haphazard and mismatched (I'm sure they just cobbled together whatever they had lying about in storage) and the drapes were heavy satin. It was so hodge-podge and old and just TIRED....When I looked out the window and saw the soulless Marriott across the way, all I could think of was how for the first time in my life, I'd rather be at the soulless corporate hotel! The poor Mission Inn is in such need of love and attention, but I'm not sure their pockets are big enough to fix it. This hotel needs a LOT of work!
Be the first to ReplyTHE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!
This was one of the worst experiences of my life… booked the hotel… payed in advance. Looking to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary. Show up and they tell me they have no clean rooms available… after confirming 2 hours earlier that we were coming… had to drive back to San Diego in the pouring rain.. I called the hotel for the next 4 days( over 60 times) everyone from the general manager down… nobody even had the courtesy to call me back… what a poorly run hotel. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT NO ONE EVER STAY THERE!!!
Be the first to ReplyMust visit specially in Christmas.
Great last Christmas weekend. We had to move to another room r/t wet carpet. Our room was had a beautiful courtyard view. It was the last Christmas wkn so it was magical. We had some drinks at the bar. It’s really not too much to do inside the hotel other than have some drinks and walk around. We had a weird encounter with probably a ghost in our room but it a was funny encounter. Anyways we don’t believe in ghost. There is a lot of bars and restaurants around the hotel. I felt safe for probably 2 blocks around the hotel walking really late, during day time it’s very safe. We will definitely come back. I had a great exploring the amazing old hotel and the Christmas lights are just breathtaking.

I was invited to give a talk at UCR. The hotel appears to be pleasant; however, I noticed that approximately half of the rooms are situated along noisy streets. You will be very likely assigned to one of the rooms. In my case, I was given a room in a corner, making it impossible to get a good night's sleep. I requested a room change at the front desk, but they informed me that there were no available rooms, which I find hard to believe. The front desk suggested that a room change could be arranged for the following day, but their attitude made it seem like I had no choice but to accept the room that was assigned to me.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible Customer Service
They accepted a reservation and confirmed it. Then, a week later, after non-refundable air travel and rental cars were booked, they sent an email saying they were "sorry our plans had changed and they would cancel our booking at no charge." Our plans HADN"T changed. We had planned a full weekend including airfare and rental car based upon their confirmation of our room reservation. I called and was told there was nothing they could do because they had a system glitch and after asking if there was any other option for us I was told no, due to "inclement weather." What??? My reservation was more than 3 weeks out. That doesn't even make sense. They clearly made a mistake but would not and will not own up to it. I have called and tried to email the manager but have received no response. Even tried a fax. Still nothing. So disappointing. Never again...
Be the first to ReplyArchitectural Treasure! Spanish Historic Detail near John Wayne Internat'l Airport
Gorgeous Historic Detail!!! We went there for a wedding, and I can't believe, as a photographer, the fabulous ways to make memorable photographs, from the gilded chapel where the ceremony was held, to the balcony and courtyard. They had a Sunday champagne brunch, and the Reception Hall where the reception was held was beautiful with its carved wood doors, stairway down, and rich ceiling drapery, not to mention the architectural work on the walls. If you're looking for a unique event space with a rich historical flair, close to John Wayne International Airport (so you can avoid LAX), with a huge mall complex not far away, and views driving with the rolling green hills on one side and the ocean on the other, this is a great place to go. Look at the photos on Google Maps and you can see for yourself. A few photos there are good ones that show I've been meaning to do this review for years, but April 2022 was the earliest I could use.
Be the first to ReplyHas seen better Days
I will start with the good: -Check in was easy and we were able to check in super early with no fuss -Our room was lovely and airy. We had a pool facing, room on the second floor. The light was pretty and the room was spacious and clean. Our robes and slippers were very comfortable The bad: -The woman checking us in acted like we were inconveniencing her by checking in…The desk was not busy and she just could not be bothered to care even a little. She gave us no map, no information on the hotel, no suggestion to make a spa appointment since the pool was closed -The pool is closed for month long maintenance and this was not mentioned anywhere on their site or confirmation emails. Losing a big amenity like that during our stay was frustrating. -The walls are super thin. Our next door neighbors were frankly THE WORST and we had to turn on the tv at 4am just to not hear their performative …expressions. A simple set of earplugs in the toiletry kit would have prevented this. -The sheets they use are some kind of crazy polyester. We were overheated all night even with ac.

The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Checking in was easy and the rooms are beautiful. Thanks to Travis in valet for helping me keep our stay a surprise for my wife. We will definitely stay again.

How to express the way the hotel security made me feel is unacceptable and hard to even think of. I travel alot but mostly stay at Hyatt affiliated Hotels as I am a globalist. The reason I chose this hotel was because of the history behind it and the culture. Unfortunately to my stay I felt harassed and Discriminated horribly! I was told security gotta call that someone was running up-and-down the staircase, possibly skateboarders and also assumed that it was me and my significant other. Granted in the staircase I was a bit lost And we went to the bathroom and not even 10 seconds later we had a big Bang on the door, They rushed us out the bathroom and immediately, in a hard tone asked for a room key as if we weren't allowed or acceptable in the hotel. When I came out I asked why tge questions and that we also were lost? He turned and walked away rudely. Then I asked for his name he gave me his 1st name proceeded to walk away, then I am I asked for his last name he said in a strong tone, Dura and proceeded to walk away without acknowledging that I felt attacked sad and lost in the building. The rest of the afternoon I spent in the hotel lobby crying for over 2 hours waiting for management to listen and help with my concerns. I felt overwhelmed as I have never been treated this way in a hotel before as if I didn't belong. The only security guy that was very humble and saw that I was sad was Jeremy and I greatly greatly appreciate his kindness as that is the only thing that I expect as a guest coming from 3000 miles away. I must admit the hotel is Unique yes, just be aware that you will not be recognized if you do not fit their profile as a guest. I attached pictures as I do not feel I should have been approached this way neither one of us. Not to mention I cannot run up and downstairs at all because I am legally handicap because I need to Double knee replacements and I've had 7 cranionomies for my Chiari Malformation of the Brain. DONT judge a book by its cover! just because someone don't look the part should mean they are perfect. The whole fact was he could have came and talk to us in a nice manner and just said there was a disturbance and not assume We were the disturbance and ruin my whole night and stay at the mission inn. I understand there is surveillance but there is also boundaries and ways to approach people in a nice way To make sure that they're 1st experience at your hotel is the best.. Especially with the history of the mission inn. I hope no one has to encounter what I have went through And an advice for those with bad knees be careful for there is a lot of stairways and in one of the pictures it shows the elevators are Very very tiny Not recommended for children as a stay. And I do not recommended at all in the future for anyone with any disabilities unless you have good assistance. Which you will not find here. In conclusion they offered us a meal for the inconvenience and would speak to the security about his manners. I have not yet received an email of apology. Also the meal they had me take that I truly didn't want was still charged to me. I don't care if I payed my night nor my meal, it's nit about that, it's about taking care of your guest when mistreated not to mention a first time guest! But if I knew they would lie about the meal, I would of not eaten it as I didn't feel well. I was trying to calm down relax because even if I was given a refund for the night, there was a wet snow storm that night. So unfortunately I had to buckle down my pride and feelings and pray noone gets discriminated as we have ever!
Be the first to ReplyWonderfully unique experience !
We have stayed nearly every month at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa for the last year. It is such a beautiful property. We love the history and checking out new rooms each time we visit as they are all fabulously unique ! The valet staff (Jacob Taylor) and hospitality staff (Aleia Flora) are exceptional - making us feel particularly welcome !
Be the first to ReplyDon't say you haven't been warned: sadly, maintenance and hospitality are both things of the past.
While still an amazing property to see, it's now way short of amazing to actually stay here. At check-in, we were offered a balcony room -- but once we got there, the doors to the balcony were screwed shut and the paint on those doors was peeling -- as was the paint on the ceiling of the shower. Then we found out why: once it started raining, water started pouring through that ceiling. Despite the inconvenience of having to change rooms after having settled in, the hotel's response was to move us into a much smaller room -- no upgrade, no accommodation of any kind. Even worse was the reason we were given for the downgrade by the desk clerk: he insisted it was an "act of God" -- even though it was clearly obvious the original room had not been maintained. Then we went to the bar, ordering a couple of margaritas made with silver Patron tequila. We just about fell over once we got the check: over $30 per drink, including tax and tip! It's the single highest price we've been charged for a drink, anywhere in the world. Finally, at the hotel restaurant we asked the hostess if we'd be able to split our plate (my wife and I are not big eaters). The hostess said "yes" -- but after being seated and waiting for our server, we were told that we *both* had to order the prix fixe dinner ($125pp). They had been specifically instructed by management that, in effect, maximizing profit was all that mattered -- and what the customers actually wanted definitely did not. As it was Valentine's Day, we knew that we'd never get in anywhere else -- so even though the hotel's restaurant was half empty throughout our entire meal, we had no choice but to stay. Yes, the meal was excellent -- but it's now two days later and we are *still* eating leftovers from the extra meal we we forced to order and never even wanted. I know we sound like whiners here, but we've been coming to the Mission Inn for decades -- and after this experience, will absolutely never go there again. My family has been in the hospitality business since the 60's, and unfortunately whoever's running this place no longer seems to understand the concept of "hospitality" or customer service.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful visit.
We had a wonderful stay at the Mission Inn. Beautiful place. All the staff were very helpful and polite. We took a tour of the inn which told the history of the inn and took us to parts we could not have seen on our own like the Ballroom and Chapel. Also the towels were so soft and the sheets were luxurious. All wonderful experience!
Be the first to ReplyReally lovely old hotel in downtown Riverside
Really lovely old hotel. There isn't a whole lot going on around it, but plenty going on in the hotel itself to make it worthwhile. It was a bit cold in January to indulge in the pool, but looked like a lot of fun when it gets a bit warmer. There are some really nice restaurants on site to choose from. We'll be back!

I live in Washington State and drive down to Riverside, CA to take my adult children and grand children to spend quality time at Mission Inn every December to enjoy the Festival of Lights and the beauty of this historic hotel. The restaurants are upscale and delicious, the pool is warm and amazing, and the scents drifting from the spa transport you to a majestic realm of relaxation. The rooms are so beautiful with additional charm and comfort. And there is a labyrinth of exquisite craftsmanship to view and take your breath away such as the patios, the internal venues, the spiral staircase and beautiful views. My soul fell in love as this isn’t just a place to stay, it is an amazing experience.
