Be careful because you can miss this place located on an alley downtown. You will regret not going in as it is one of the best restaurants to have opened in Manhattan in a long time. I can describe the food as a blend of Latin + Asian food + techniques. My Firefly Squid were unlike any squid I have ever had. Just superb. This Chilean chef is on her way so jump aboard. We had a wonderful server + had taken the time to pick out a great table. Though small it can be noisy during early dinner so go a little later.
Be the first to ReplyWas excited to try this place.
Even more so after having an amazing pre dinner cocktail and meeting the owner's delightful and proud Mother who was just in from Chile. The Gentleman in charge of the door was a real pro.Than the meal started.1) Spanish Lentils appeared to be from a can and were just mediocre.2) The mussels dish contained four mussels - that's right four - perhaps excusable except the owner was stationed at the kitchen and theoretically looking at every dish. The sauce was kind of blah.3) The Japanese sardine was quite good but not fantastic.4) Sommelier did not have a particularly good grasp of the wine list - the wine list is overpriced and not very deep.I loved the owner's work at Gotham B & G - I really hope she gets it together here
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, ambiance and service.
Highly recommended. The lentils were amazing and so were the clams. Nice generous pour of tequila on top of that!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible food and space.
Definitely worth it. Everything was so delicious. Can't recommend more!
Be the first to ReplyWe had a wonderful dining experience at Mena last night.
The ambiance, the serving staff and the food were all very special. The cocktails were spectacular (mezcal with Chartreuse and kiwi and Cachacas). All the dishes were unusual and delectable but we especially liked the clam appetizer and the scallop with cabbage. Someone had mentioned an issue with excessive use of salt...this was not the case at all!!Although pricey, we felt our dinner was well worth it....with one exception....THE TEA!!! Our waitress asked if we would like coffee or tea with our dessert. Since they did not have decaf coffee we chose herbal tea. We found it to be delicious (soba cha from Kettl)....but not worth the whopping $12 per cup !!! (Not pointed out to us when ordering....and not on the dinner menu)I should mention that felt even more insulting since we arrived at 5:20for our 5:30 res and the restaurant was locked...we waited outside in the rain and I finally called at 5:25. Someone came out a few minutes and walked us around to a lobby entrance around the corner where we waited another 10min. You'd think we would have been offered a drink on the house....or at least a cup of tea! That being said...we would return in a heartbeat (probably skip the tea ....which by the way is $1/bag at Kettl).

Our experience at Mena started out weird but got a lot better. I have high hopes for this restaurantWe arrived for a 6:30pm reservation on Saturday and were seated near the door. Lol. I hate sitting near the entrance, or bathrooms, or dish drop station. At least they gave us a large table and we sat on the same side facing the velvet curtain that separated the maitre d' and the dining room. It's a tiny restaurant laid out rather weirdly, with large empty space across from the bar that frankly could've been better used for diningThe menu is such that you order one from each of the 3 sections. For mains there were 4 options, and BOTH of the options we picked were already sold out! At 6:30pm on a Saturday! LOL. My companion was livid. We wanted pheasant and snow crabs and were stuck with blood sausage and mussels. Have you googled blood sausage? I suggest you don't. The menu was such that we couldn't even swap those for more of appetizers. Sigh. Starting out on the wrong foot, though our waitress did comp us a round of red wine However the food is truly great. The oysters & sardines were amazing. I have never had chou farci before but I now DREAM of that dish. It is that good. The mussels and blood sausage were also good though I can't say I would elect to eat blood sausage at these price points again. This was truly a memorable and unique culinary experience and we are a couple of mixed-heritage people who eat out every single weekend (and order takeout almost every single meal during the week), and therefore not easily impressed :)The drinks were phenomenal. That bartender needs a raise and we gave a generous tip. That was truly some of the best drinks I've had in Manhattan and the absolute best spicy margaritas (and I'm an enthusiast who makes my own!)We visited Gotham when Chef Blamey was at the helm and were not impressed, but are glad to see that she's hitting her strides at Mena making her own food and not someone else's. I love supporting female chefs and look forward to coming back
Be the first to ReplyVery good food and service, but not worth the prices.
Won't be going back. Yelp is trying hard to not let me post this review.

This restaurant's entrance is in a dark alley in Tribeca, which does a lot for setting the stage to your dinner. It's a 3-course prix fixe menu - with dishes that pull from the chef's latin American background. Although the culinary experience is top notch, it's a very unpretentious restaurant: no tablecloth, no coat check, nothing stuffy about the place. The wine list is as eclectic and forward as the food.

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but Mena fell short of expectations given the recent NYT article of its opening as well as Chef Blamey's background (Chilean born and alum of both Gotham Bar & Grill and Chumley's). We came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. The outside is unassuming but not hard to find. Once we walked in, the interior is simple, classy, and welcoming. Service was top notch and on par with any Michelin stared restaurants. Our waitress explained the menu items one by one as there were a lot of unfamiliar ingredients. Among four of us, we pretty much got all the items on the menu, plus the squab to share. What we liked: - Oysters and Cherrystone (clam with Yuzu sauerkraut and avocado puree): both were refreshing and had unique flavor combos that we haven't tasted elsewhere. - Chou Farci: another unique dish that had the perfect balance of flavors and textures. What we did not like: - Japanese Sardine: it's overly mushy, lacking contrast in texture. Even with the cucumber (I think?) on top, the whole dish felt weighed down. Also didn't think the sardine flavor worked well with potatoes in mayo at the bottom at all. - Spanish Lentils: I'm torn on this one - the shiitake mushroom chips on top was delicious standalone, but once I ate it with the lentils, the whole thing became overly salty. I probably chugged a whole glass of water from just eating half of this dish. What we REEEALLY did not like: the squab - at a whopping tag of $58, it's about 70% inedible bones, 20% skin, 10% edible meat. Our whole party felt being robbed. Maybe we got an extra skinny bird? I don't know. What we REEEALLY liked: the dessert Winter pavlova. Another unique dish with citrus curd, squash, lemon, it had the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. The tasting menu is $110 per person, not including the squab. We shared one bottle of wine, and one cocktail each, and left with $880+ less in bank account. Given the inconsistency in dishes, and the high price tag, I'm not sure if Mena is worth the hype (yet). Maybe I will be back in a year to give it another try.
Be the first to ReplyThis new kid on the alley (opposite Au Cheval) is a gem.
The decor is casually elegant, the staff is expert without being cloying, and the food is distinctive, delicious and beautifully presented. The contrast from the unkempt, graffiti scarred Cortlandt Alley to the scrupulously designed Mena is all New York.
Be the first to ReplyTop notch service, ambiance, presentation, and food.
Would dine here again to try the dishes we didn't pick the first time.
Be the first to ReplyNew spot in Tribeca, we had prefix for $115/ person.
Everything was delicious and staffs were friendly, our waiter was very sweet and attentive. I m glad I had tryout this place.
Be the first to ReplyChef Victoria Blamey finally gets to say what she wants to
Chef Victoria Blamey finally gets to say what she wants to say here. This is a wonderful restaurant which has a few procedural kinks that need to be worked out. They will be. It's not the easiest task in the world to find the restaurant. After you get to Cortland Alley, the entrance is far from clear, and we wandered into two different spots (including a speakeasy) before we finally found the entrance. Once you're in, though, what is wonderful starts with the staff, all of whom are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Ask them anything. They'll do it. They'll even try to accommodate special requests (although, really, read the menu beforehand and either call or live with it). The menu is one of the places where kinks need to be worked out. As our server (the wonderful Corey) explained, "it's sort of a tastings menu with choices." In other words, there are categories, and you choose one from each category. There's only one dessert which is fine. We drank cocktails but a few people told us the wine list is quite interesting, different, and well priced. Food? Ok. We had the oysters and the scallops. The scallops had been rolled in a smoky pepper mixture and then sliced. To me, they could have passed for ham if I were blindfolded. Corey asked "is that a good thing?" It's a thing. They're wonderful. This was my second favorite dish of the night. So are the oysters. Clearly, they were opened when we ordered them. Get them. You'll be glad you did. For the second course we had the Kyoto carrots and the Spanish lentils. The lentils were my favorite dish of the evening, without question. They came with a pile of mushroom chips (like potato chips only better) but the lentils were so good... I could have eaten a bowl of them and called it a meal. THEY ARE SO GOOD . GET THE LENTILS. I was "meh" about the carrots, but I loved the chicory that came with them, and their dressing. They were out of one of the main courses (the squab: a dish we wanted), but we had the cholgas cabbage and the potato. Now, the potato comes with morcilla, and if you don't know what that is, look it up. It's not for everyone's taste. Mixed in with the potato, it was amazing. So, too, was the cabbage with mussels. Our server told us that Chilean cuisine dries mushrooms and then reconstitutes them, and that's what Chef did in this dish. You'll wonder why no one ever combined mussels with cabbage. It's genius. Since we couldn't get the squab, they brought us the stuffed cabbage and the verona radicchio on the house. The stuffed cabbage is a very gentle, very soft dish. Have it if you're also having something with some strong flavors, like the potato/morcilla combination. The verona radicchio: did I write the lentils were my favorite dish? Well, maybe the radicchio was. Sweet, rich, bitter, crispy and soft. I had to share the dish. I didn't want to. Dessert will be something you've never had before. It's a foam, over a chocolate and seaweed ganache, with some hazelnuts. It went down real easy, but I had the taste of seaweed in my mouth for a few hours after. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you. Just realize you won't know it's seaweed when you're eating it, but you will later. The best food in the world doesn't taste good if the service is bad. It's great here. Corey and Eli (spelling?) are the names I remember, but they and every single person who poured water, cleared plates, and took care of us that night, were exemplary. Chef has a reputation for insisting on the best, and it's evident in the restaurant. So, go. It isn't inexpensive, but if you know food, you'll know right away that this wonderful food is so thought out, so careful and so new, it's worth it. Go. Please go. Try it. If you're lucky, you'll see Chef smile as you leave. That smile is worth the whole evening.
