Tasty and friendly
We booked a table at this restaurant for a treat and did not regret it. First, I felt a bit uncomfortable as the place is not large and we were sitting right nest to the bar and it was rather loud and crammed. But, without me having to ask, the waiter realized that there was a problem and offered to get us a quieter table. The food was delicious and well prepared. Altogether, this was a great evening in a very relaxed atmosphere for a very reasonable price.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Dinner, but something was missing...
We began our evening by being seated outside in their little patio hut, but it was a cold and rainy night in November, and the fire heaters they had weren't quite enough to do the job, so we were a little chilled all evening long. We're not sure why we were sat outside since we had made the reservations probably a few weeks in advance and hadn't indicated we wanted to sit outside, but it must have been the only place left for us. We were the only ones to be sat outside for probably the next 30 minutes, so it also felt sort of isolating. The food was wonderful. I would encourage everyone in the party to get a different dish off the menu so everyone can try everything. That's what our small group did and we were happy to try everything. The service was fine. Since it was raining, it seemed like the waiters didn't want to come out unless they had to (and I don't blame them), so it felt like we were forgotten some of the time. But we didn't let that stop us from having a good time. We would be happy to return - we would just request an indoor spot, especially if traveling in the colder months!
Be the first to ReplyThe best deal in SF!
These short form tasting menus at Marlena are absolutely the best deal in the entire city and maybe even in the state! I seriously paid more for parking in the middle of a homeless encampment downtown one night than I did for this delicious meal. Every course was excellent; the Black Cod, a roasted beet and permissions salad, and a homemade pasta were huge highlights. Best of all -- the staff and the owners are constantly ensuring you are achieving maximum enjoyment at all times. These people truly care about their business and their food. In terms of overall value, Marlena gets six stars from this satisfied customer!
Be the first to ReplyA rude, rushed and uninviting experience
Not a good dining experience for catching up with people. You must go expecting to eat pay and get out. Truly an awful service. They aren’t joking around about their 2 hour time limit. 2 mins before the 2 hour mark, the manager asked us to leave. From beginning to end, the service was rushed and the server was pushy. We bought a bottle of wine and had their four course tasting. I’m not sure what patron will be able to eat and drink and digest that quickly. Food wise, they had an Alaskan black cod on the menu. Which is a head scratcher as there are local black cods that could have been easily featured. The risotto felt premade and not fresh. I made a comment to the manager on the way out and he just asked me to leave ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Unclear how they earned a Michelin star but it was certainly not up to par with other amazing restaurants in the city. $65 not including a 20% gratuity for small portions and an incredibly rushed, unsettled and rude experience.

We had a terrific dinner at Marlena "summer camp". We had the seven course meal, which was delicious; each innovative mouthful was full of flavor and texture. The waiter recommended some wines by the glass that my husband and I shared - each really complemented the food. We would definitely recommend Marlena and look forward to dining in their renovated home space.
Be the first to ReplySome excellent and some good dishes
Our first visit to Marlena. We tried the 4 course tasting menu: caviar, orichietta, beets, fish (main), and pork. Caviar, orichietta, and beets were all excellent—inspired flavor combinations and great balance. The pork dish needs more onions and mushrooms as they enhanced the pork tremendously. The first fish course was good but we felt that it lacked something. Desserts were inventive and good but not inspired. The wine list was refreshingly approachable in terms of cost and provided great variety of grapes and regions. Excellent service. They need to put a drape in front of the door when the weather outside is cold. Every time the door it opened, one side of the restaurant 7 of the 12 tables) gets bathed in cold air. Customers at a Neighboring table had to wear coats throughout their dinner.

I am thrilled to have found Marlena’s. The restaurant boasts a daily 4-course menu and I was lucky to dine on an evening when they were also offering a 7-course menu. The chef did a phenomenal effort navigating my aversions and continued to surprise my palate from dish to dish. The sommelier was simply delightful and put together a creative and fun pairing. Looking forward to returning over and over again.

We were 15 mins early. They made us wait till the appointed time even though there are cleaned and empty tables in the restaurant. The assigned waiter clearly has no idea what to do. He did not engage us or have any suggestion. A dumb waiter would have done better. The trout as the first dish came from the supermarket with a sprinkle of lemongrass oil. All finished in one mouthful. A super noisy restaurant, saw someone asking them to tone down the music so that patrons can talk. Thank goodness. Totally underwhelmed. Left the restaurant hungry. What made it even more irritating is that they added 20 percent as tip without any option from me. With service at such sub-par standard, they don’t deserve any. Perhaps this automatic addition of service fee explains their disinterested attitude. Quite appalling. I will not be back. They do not deserve a M star or any mention at all. I would have given them a one star review here if not for for one small saving grace- the black cod and the pork collar were better than average.

This has to be one of the most heartwarming meals I've had in 5+ years. Every interaction, from the knowledgeable staff, to my adjacent diners, to the friendly, smiling chefs who waved goodbye to me on my way out, made me feel completely at ease and at home. It is clear how much the owners care about what they do, and I have an inkling that they will not stop pushing until they get one or even two stars (the food, by the way, is as good if not better than a lot of 2-star meals I've had over the course of my life). Bravo and thank you to the Marlena team! If you didn't know it before, I hope it's clear to you that people are behind you and want you to succeed!

It takes a combination of guts and a great chef to open during the Pandemic. Our dinner was fantastic. A great prix fixe menu with a good variety of selections. The mushroom ravioli was by far the highlight of the dinner. We were a party of six and we had every choice all were sublime. The only downside for the evening was the Waygu beef entree. The flavor and quality was fabulous, but the quantity of food was a bit sparse given the $45 up charge for the item. All in all a great dining experience. We will be back.
