Mao Mao is a fun bar in Brooklyn that transports you to Thailand! From the decor to the smell, it felt authentic. I came here with a party of 6 and we squeezed into one of the corner tables downstairs. I loved the giant projector that played various vintage videos of Thailand and the music was on point. We only ordered drinks since we already had dinner down the street. We got the Ma Kratheup Long to share, which had about 10-12 shots worth of alcohol in the glass flask. The taste of that was a lot better than the smell! I also ordered myself a cocktail with soju, but can't remember the name of it. It was pretty good and I had a good buzz by the night we left. All in all, a fun bar to check out!

Broadway is one of the few truly interesting streets left in Brooklyn. I never fail to find surprises when I get off at a new station along the J-Z lines, it has brought me such finds as Masquerade, Santa Panza, and Ornithology. Add to that mix the vintage kitschy (perhaps gaudy) Thai restaurant-cum-club-cum-cinema you didn't know you needed in your life. I'm no expert on vintage Thai cinema, but the soundtrack appears to be the Thai equivalent of Nazia Hassan and 80s Lata Mangeshkar. The vegetarian options are not that plentiful. And you come here more for the vibes than the food. But I did enjoy the snacking peanuts, and the chive dumplings - for pak mor, one of my favorite sweet-savory Thai snacks, the version at Chiangmai Diner is more delicate.

Came on a Sunday evening around 6:45pm and the place was quite empty. Ambiance was pretty dim with a huge projector screen for movies. The movie theater seats were very uncomfortable where you had to sit on the edge of the seats to reach the table to eat, so your back would eventually ache by the time you're done. Food and drinks were served in plastic plates/cups. Drinks tasted like juice more than alcohol. Didn't stay long enough to watch a movie. The place is cool to checkout as there isn't many places like it and there's also a live dj playing music otherwise, not missing out on anything.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is truly awesome and authentic.
It's the vibe for me, we loved it. The food was super good. The appetizers were really really small but they were still delish. And the price for a 3.5 ounce bottle of soju is 16.99 which is a lot for something so tiny so your going to end up buying 3 or 4 which I'm sure is the point... anyways I digress.. the service was really good as well. I loved the movie projector on the wall and all the fun decor, they had a dj too which was nice, I wish he would of played some Thai music instead so we could of had the full experience but it's ok. We spent 185$ for 2 people. Like I said those bottles were small.
Be the first to ReplyMao Mao has a really cool atmosphere.
You walk through the door and down the stairs to be seated. The seating is eclectic and it is hit or miss if you get a comfortable seat or not. One time we were sat in the theater seats and those were comfortable but not within good reach distance to table for eating. The second time we were sat in uncomfortable metal chairs. The food isn't anything special to me but I think that might just be my personal preference. It is all cooked well and authentic - but I am not a seafood lover and most of their food tastes like it is cooked in fish oil or fat. The stars are mostly for atmosphere and the staff is super friendly and attentive. I don't plan to go back.

They don't always agree to offer takeout and the last-call times are inconsistent. Furthermore, if you're placing an order on the phone do not expect to get any questions nicely answered. They're rushed and it's loud...someone will likely hang up on you--it's happened to me more than once.

An opium den! Almost no light, greasy pricy food on cheap plastic plates. As a great foreign film fan, I found the movie shown here is completely lacks of artistry, even idiotic, to be frank. Space is interesting, but the execution is terrible terrible.
Be the first to ReplyReally good food and friendly service.
I've only ordered takeout from here, but enjoyed the dishes. Chicken with rice dish, the spicy pork dish, and the chicken in curry sauce.

When I heard there was a restaurant nearby with Thai street foods and movies playing, I knew I had to go. When we got there, we waited at the host booth upstairs for a while before realizing that nobody was coming so we went downstairs and were quickly seated. The seats were very low and leaned pretty far back which made it a bit difficult for conversation since we had to lean quite far forward to be able to hear each other. It also made it difficult to eat once we got the food, so I think I would have preferred a more normal table and chairs for eating, although the setup they have may be nice for just relaxing. I found the food quite pricey and to be honest the taste was a bit underwhelming to me as well. I had really looked forward to going here, but sadly I don't think I'll be back.

Coolest and most well decorated restaurant that I have been to. The seats are old movie theater chairs and it transports you to old times Thailand (i would imagine, idk bc I haven't been).Don't be fooled tho the cool aesthetic is paired with even more incredible food! The sauce that was on my dish was literally so delicious and the right amount of spicy.

Cool vibe, it's a nice social place to hang out and get some unique cocktails with some delightfully spicy food.
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to like this place.
Its a cool space and decorated well. The food was ok/good but a little on the pricey side for what it was. But by far it was the most uncomfortable dining experience I think I have ever had. My back, literally hurts from trying to position myself to eat the food in the peculiar dining set up they have. The chairs a very small, and not set up very well with tables. I had very little legroom, and I am pretty short myself. My friends were miserable because we couldn't relax and enjoy themselves.

This is my first ever yelp review and this place is the only reason I wanted to write one. We got two drinks, and order of the curry puffs, which we totally had to get another order of. The best staff, amazing ambiance, and the music really impressed me. Me and my friend felt totally welcomed and comfortable the whole time and decided it's an absolute return. The staff also brought out an order of chive dumplings on the house. Love you guys so much. Truly a sweet staff
Be the first to ReplyFood was ok but service was even worse.
Had a birthday dinner with a large party and the host took my bottle of rum which was a birthday gift. We had no intention of opening the bottle and was going to put away since we understood that no alcoholic beverages were allowed. Staff was rude and shouldn't be in the hospitality business with that type of attitude. My friends and I had such a horrific experience and NEVER going back. There's many other places worth going to with good service.

Super cool vibes, that transports you to an evening in Bangkok - in a run down theater type space. It's dark, moody and the seating is literally movie theater style (red scratchy material) seats. I would suggest to come for drinks and some apps - enjoy your time and go for dinner elsewhere. There just isn't enough room (physical table space) to really enjoy your meal. But it's certainly a cool experience - if your in the neighborhood, go!
Be the first to ReplyA very unique spot.
Coming here feels like stepping into a different version of reality for a bit. It's moody, there are movies playing silently while the Beatles play out loud, and the decor is part movie theater, part street market. We didn't realize 2 hours had passed. The food felt simple yet authentic, and I appreciated that this wasn't the same Thai food you can get at the many other Thai spots around. We got the veggie curry puffs, laab talay, and khao mun gai, which were all great! I'd never had medicinal libations, which we split between the 2 of us and had 4-5 shots each. They went down smooth! The only things that can be hit or miss are 1) the seating, we were seated next to each other facing the projector, 2) it took time for the food to cook so this prob isn't the best spot if you're in a rush, 3) they can invest in tableware besides paper plates
Be the first to ReplyCustomer service was horrible.
We were 5 minutes late for our reservation and the person there was cursing me out in my birthday

Every single seat in this place is no higher than 16 inches off the ground. It's like they raided a kindergarten classroom when they set up the place. I was looking forward to trying the food here, but we left immediately after the server informed us there were no seating alternatives even remotely comfortable for fully-grown adults. I don't know anyone who wants to eat curry in a dark, dirty room in the fetal position. Another commenter described the place as "Chuck E Cheese for hipsters" and that nails it. Bushwick deserves better.

Food was great, service was good and the atmosphere was amazing. Would definitely recommend and revisit this spot again. Friday night around 6pm for a group of 5 and we were seated right away without reservations.
Be the first to ReplyCame here twice for the vibes, snacks, and drinks.
I wouldn't come here for dinner food as much
Be the first to ReplyOn the recommendation of a friend who shall remain
On the recommendation of a friend who shall remain nameless, :cough: Louis, my friends and I, minus ironically Louis, came to Mao Mao after a rather rude Uber ride. The place is sort of hidden around the corner of desolate and graffiti riddled storefronts. Word of warning: it's a super dark place like literally. It's like they haven't paid their light bill and are relying on dim candlelight. It's a lot like in the movies where the main character visits an opium den. It's the Thai restaurant version of a movie opium den. The interior was what I can only describe as eclectic eccentricity. The seats were a mix of bar stools, darkly painted children's chairs, and plush movie seats. The tables are so low, there is basically no space between it and the floor. Our group was originally 10 but only 5 came. Perhaps those 5 knew the real deal about Mao Mao.We kind of had 2 servers, a male and female, both faux friendly and full of polite and insulting condensation. Props to authenticity because the menu was in Thai, the descriptions were in English, and there were no pictures. Actually, the descriptions and no pictures were all rendered moot because there was NO LIGHT to read it properly! To the food, we all had various plates of white rice and pork. I had minced pork with basil sauce and rice. I asked them to make it spicy, they didn't. Also, I barely tasted any of the sauce. Then again, I probably couldn't see it because, you know, no light! The plate was small for a "large" plate and my other friend, who only got a "small" plate, was very surprised when she got hers on a plate usually reserved to be placed on the bottom of teacups. It cost $11. Mine cost $15.Perhaps this a Thai thing or maybe they're afraid of a violent uprising because of the miniscule amount of food and their abhorrent behavior but what the hell is up with the plastic plates and forks with no knives? Like, dudes, I'm in a damn restaurant not a backyard barbecue! Wait, let me take it back, in every backyard barbecue I've been to, I was given a plastic fork AND a KNIFE. It wasn't worth it. My food was very lackluster. As of right now, about an hour and a half later, I'm hungry. I wish I gotten pizza. To make matters worse, they added gratuity for our group of 5. According to the cold and condescending waitress, they do that with everyone including solo diners. Really? For one person? To get charged 20% gratuity? And have the audacity to ask for an additional tip? Sorry, I'm not about that life and neither are my friends. Overall, I think this place gets cred for being authentic Thai and gets to treat its patrons however the hell it wants. Mao Mao isn't worth the trip, isn't worth the money, and isn't worth the time.
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a Sunday night and the ambience was so awesome.
Nicely themed with a vintage Thai cinema vibe, the food, drinks, and friendly staff really made my last night in Brooklyn memorable. I would recommend coming here to start your night off with some great food and cocktails. Definitely coming back the next time I'm in town

amazing place with, in my opinion, the best dumplings i've ever had, period! staff here is really friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. these items are quite unique compared to other thai restaurants i've ever been to. most importantly, this is one of the most thematically sound places i've been too-- vintage everything with lots of traditional thai elements. and their alcohol selection is fabulous!
