Mama Chang Fairfax Reviews from The Last Year
The food is really yummy; however, this place is pricy.
Be prepared to spend a lot of $$. Food came out fast and it is a clean restaurant with plenty of parking.
I ate dinner here last night with some friends.
All of our dishes looked delicious. I had chive and seafood dumplings with a spicy beef noodle soup. For me I think the soup could be more flavorful and spicy. However, I would go back again!

Really unhappy that the menu did not indicate that the Sichuan green pepper fish was a soup with glass noodles! I wouldn't have ordered it had I known! Service here has gone downhill. No smiles, no follow up to our table.

The place was pretty nice, quiet where you can talk to your friends without having to scream over loud music. Staff was attentive. We went there for my friend's birthday. They don't have special for the celebrations but they did give us the pineapple buns for free and added a candle which was nice. The food was good, too small of a portion. I'm used to traditional Chinese portion which are big and shareable.

I went to Mama Chang's for the dimsum brunch with my girl friends, and I was seriously impressed! It was packed - which was expected for a weekend, and we had a little bit of a wait time, but it was worth the wait. We ordered a lot of dimsum. I don't even remember the names of the dishes we ordered, and the dishes arrived quickly. By the time 5 of our orders arrived, we were already full, but we wanted to try more items, so we ordered a little bit more on their dimsum menu. Our server was really attentive and accommodating to us. The restaurant was spacious and can sit small groups and large groups. I wish they would make the dimsum menu available during some other weekdays as well. I really enjoyed my experience and I cannot wait to visit again soon!
Fabulous food! Dim sum on the weekends too.
I wanted every item on the menu. Diverse offerings.

I think the food was a solid 4, but service was a 1, hence my 3 star review. Stopped by for dinner with a group of 8 folks last night and service was honestly. We had to constantly flag down the server because she would listen to one thing out of 5 and disappear. It was frustrating and honestly made for a less than stellar experience. Half of the stuff we ordered didn't make it and we had to repeat our orders too. The place was definitely not busy and I don't think our server had another table. She just chose to spend her time conferring with other folks in a corner most of the time. Now for the food. We started with the scallion bubble pancake which was good, way too oily for me( a recurring theme with Mama Chang). The ganghood fried chicken was a huge hit - we reordered this dish too. The lamb skewers were also delicious - didn't taste meaty at all and very nicely flavored. The cauliflower was also another surprise hit - I had expected it to be flavorless for some reason but it was very well seasoned and the sichuan peppers made it absolutely delicious - again, very oily though. The lychee chicken was basically the same as the panda orange chicken - there was no lychee taste at all, I'd not order it again. The fried rice was kinda sad in my opinion. We did one with and one without meat and it was average at best. We skipped dessert. Drinks were also kinda a cluster* in my opinion - they were out of a few options and then the server kept confusing who ordered what. Overall, I may get takeout here again because the food was yummy. I don't want to deal with service again. However, I did notice they do Dimsum brunches over the weekend and I might want to try that.
Very attractive restaurant and the service is ok.
The food that we had on the other hand was very, very average. What is it with the really bad trend from trendy new Chinese places that DON'T serve rice with entrees, especially when you're spending $30+ a dish? It's borderline offensive in my book. We had some dim sum and a few large plates to share. I've had my share of dim sum over the years and I have to say what they serve here is priced a lot higher than just about every other place I've been to , the portions are smaller and they are majorly lacking in taste. Maybe it's a lack of MSG (or maybe not), but nothing I had tasted as good as countless places I've been to. Not trying to be a snob, just sharing my opinion on their dim sum offerings. Main dishes that we had were okay to almost forgettable. The seasonal "shrimp scallops with asparagus and snow peas" was edible but tasteless - definitely forgettable and did not show any special skill by a "chef" in making the dish. Sorry to say it but I was not impressed, although there are plenty of saps who seem to be, with Mama Chang despite its' pedigree.
4/5 Recently came with friends and we had so many
4/5 Recently came with friends and we had so many different small plates to share. My favorite is the scallion pancake. The presentation is fun as it comes puffed into a ball. The Grandma sizzling pork belly is a MUST. Service is great, ambiance is chill, food is great. Wait time can be long at times but call ahead and check before you make your way here.
I like the ambience of the restaurant.
Definitely somewhere where you can come for a date or a large group for a special occasion. We like praise pork belly and egg dish, the crispy fried cauliflower, and a beef chow fun. I don't think I've ever had something here that I don't like. There's plenty of parking available. Definitely pricier then your typical Chinese food restaurant but they make up for it in ambience and flavor.
MAMA’S BACK!
Several years ago, we visited Mama Chang’s just as the world was emerging from the COVID nightmare. We weren’t disappointed, but Mama didn’t shine the way she did during our first visit (see prior review). Well, we visited again last week, and it’s clear Mama is at the top her game. The food was original, served fresh, and with solid service. The place was packed, and people were happy. We’ll be back!
It’s OK
Food was variable. From good to mediocre. General Taos chicken was way over cooked with not much taste. Hot sour soup was good Spring rolls ok. Chicken with vegetables again just ok. For the price expected all dishes to be very good
Just OK
Came here for lunch after I read article just released proclaiming this to be a top premier restaurant in the DC area. Spring Rolls were delicious, pan fried seafood dumpling - ok, Ordered the combo Lo Mein and the noodles were quite tasty but protein left much to be desired. Ventilation does not seem to be great in the restaurant as there is a strong grease odor that permeates throughout. Service was decent but nothing that stands out. Of note, our dishes all came out within 3-5 minutes of ordering. From a efficiency perspective, that is great. From a freshly prepared perspective, not so much. All in all, food was overall good and we may return. Not sure it is DC’s finest.
Excellent food
We go to this restaurant pretty frequently because it’s one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. Some of our favorites include the bubble scallion pancake, pork soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, and the hand pulled noodles with beef . Service was a tiny bit slow though.

I think this was my third time dining at Mama Chang and it just gets better every time. I came here with a group of 6 girls and we got 6 dishes, two being sides and we had to take leftovers home. Service here is extremely efficient and the food comes out very quickly. This is kind of the closest thing to din tai fung for me LOL
Worth the hype and great ambiance.
Mama Chang us located in a huge shopping center with ample parking. The restaurant itself was pretty big with ample seating but service was a bit slow on a Wednesday evening. We got the rib soup, pepper beef tenderloin, three cup chicken, snow pea tips, and pork belly with tea egg with were all very tasty. We especially liked the snow pea tip and the beef tenderloin which was both cooked and seasoned very well. We ended the meal with the citrus coconut pudding that was light and tasty--a good way to end the meal. A bit pricey but acceptable. Would definitely come again!
While dining at Mama Chang, we ordered the half Peking
While dining at Mama Chang, we ordered the half Peking duck, but it resembled more of a roast duck. Upon comparing our dish to various images of Peking duck, it appeared they might have substituted a cheaper duck but charged us the Peking duck price. It would have been preferable if they informed us if they ran out of the specific duck. Additionally, the service was slightly abrupt; despite having ample food remaining, we were asked in a hurried manner if we intended to order anything else. Upon further review of various other Peter Chang restaurants and events, it appears that such deception is not uncommon, as they have been known to replace items without informing the customer. This lack of transparency regarding substitutions is disappointing and diminishes the overall dining experience

Between 3 and 4 stars but lean towards 4 cause the food was not bad. Ordered fried rice combination, seafood stone pot, Bao bbq dumplings, crab& pork soup dumplings. The price was not cheap but the food was not bad. I didn't feel completely ripped off, since the environment was nice and the food was decent. The thing that bothered me though was the seafood stone pot is kind of like a soup thing, there were no spoons except for a serving spoon. Maybe a bit awkward if sharing. Fried rice was good, but while I don't mind using chopsticks, I'm annoyed of having to use chopsticks for rice on a plate....Did ask for a spoon but wished I had maybe a bowl instead of a plate. Anyway, the dining experience could have been better with slightly better tools to eat with. Would expect a little better on that for the price paid but was not a big deal. It was not bad, I would go back with a friend that wanted to try the place; however, I would probably not be going back anytime soon. The food was not bad but it was not wow and it was on the expensive side.
Went for the Peking Duck! So good! Crispy scallion bubble!
Went for the Peking Duck! So good! Crispy scallion bubble! What the heck? Break that dude open! Like Chinese nachos! Service wad outstanding! Attentive but not overbearing. Very quiet inside. Modern chines modern. Thin woods snd sharp lines. Very nice!

Came for a Valentine's dinner on a weekday night, and it was quite busy. Thankfully we made a reservation so we got seated quickly, highly recommend making a reservation beforehand to skip the busy queue. The inside of the restaurant was decorated with Chinese New Year decorations and was well-lit. We ordered the scallion bubble pancake which came with a curry sauce. The pancake was hot and crispy - I recommend ordering this if you want a light appetizer before the rest of your meal. The pork soup dumplings were full of flavorful broth, and the dumpling skin was thin yet didn't break easily. The dumplings were delicious on their own and even better paired with the sauce! We wanted to order a vegetable so we went with spicy garlic eggplant. Not too spicy but very flavorful - would recommend ordering a side of rice to accompany this dish. The beef rice noodles took a while to come out but I loved the bounciness of the noodles and the beef was nice and tender. I wish the noodles came with bean sprouts and more scallions, but I still recommend this dish! There are a lot more dishes on the menu and I will definitely be returning to try more!
Be ready for a wait if you don't have reservations.
But it goes pretty quickly. Food portions are good. It's good, I wouldn't say great. But given the slim true authentic Cantonese choices around the area & close to home, I'll definitely go here.
The food here is very good.
The prices are not cheap but reasonable. Some things we didn't like: 1. Kitchen closes an hour before their closing time which is very odd. We came in at 845on a day where they close at 10pm. We ordered our food and it came out slightly before 9pm. We were asked to put in our dessert order because the kitchen is closing but we just barely started eating out entrees 2. They don't have good ventilation so you will end up smelling like food 3. The bubble pancake was interesting but quickly becomes stale if you don't eat it fast enough. The sauce served with it has an odd flavor and is served cold which we didn't care for What we ordered that we really enjoyed: 1. Dry fried cauliflower. This was my favorite dish. They are very generous with the Szechuan peppers so be prepared to have your whole mouth numb. A must order 2. Gamghood Friend chicken - light battering and very crispy 3. Hand pulled noodles - they really do a very nice job with this. The noodles are the perfect texture.
When we first entered Mama Chang's restaurant we couldn't
When we first entered Mama Chang's restaurant we couldn't get over how loud it was. They need something on the ceiling to deaden the loud noise. No ambiance AT ALL. It felt like a high school cafeteria. We ordered two dishes that we thought were pretty safe, mine was beef tenderloin with broccoli and my husband got the pork belly. I did not get beef tenderloin. The beef was fatty and chewy. I don't know if they know this but there is hardly any fat whatsoever in a beef tenderloin. My husband's pork belly was breaded and then had a soggy sauce on it. Both dishes were overly salty. We were given a large dish with only a bread dish size plate to work with. I asked for a cup of tea but was told they did not have tea. We only saw the waitress when she took our order and when she brought the check. We were asked if we wanted a container and we said "no thanks". All of the above for a grand total of $80. Needless to say, we won't be back.''

AMAZING! Best Chinese food you've ever had! Wait staff are wonderful. Our family loves the food and we come quite often.
Quality Chinese in Fairfax
This restaurant has many authentic Chinese dishes as well as the fare you would expect to see at an American Chinese restaurant. The service is always fast and efficient and everything is always well executed. Recommend the duck egg roll appetizer.
BEST CHINESE ever!!
Second time eating here and it’s the best Chinese food I’ve EVER had. The first time was with 5 people and we shared numerous dishes and all were delicious. Today, I took a friend and he and I split Lychee Pepper Chicken (saw a plate go by and had to ask what it was!!) and combination fried rice. Friend also got Sweet Sour soup and said “best ever.” I ordered a fried rice to go and my wife and daughter agreed—best ever. It’s a bit pricey at $18 but it must be two pounds of food!!! They both ate two bowls and there’s still a ton left for later! I can’t wait to return!!
Different Dim Sum experience
Spacious restaurant in Fairfax that features an extensive dim sum menu. I would describe it as a slight upgrade to the typical dim sum fare in terms of presentation but at a slightly higher price point. There are no dim sum carts here and there is a big team of waiters who bring the food out to the tables. Some of the dim sum orders come with fresh and tasty bok choy on the side. Soup pork dumplings ($8) and pork & shrimp shumai ($7) were good. The turnip cake with XO paste was ok. Beef chow fun ($16) is tasty but a bit pricy. Pork and century egg porridge was quite tasty. The Yangzhou meatball stew ($18) can be skipped as it was essentially 3 giant meatballs but bunch of filing and crunchy stuff inside each one that didn’t quite accentuate the enjoyment factor. We didn’t order the scallion bubble pancake but saw others enjoy this unique appetizer. If you like the more traditional dim sum places with the carts, at a lower price point. then this may not be your place.

Unsold listings bug?

Idk if this is related to the unsold listing % rule but I have listed 6 reservations and sold 5 of them and my unsold listing percentage is ~45%. For some reason the unsold listings have not been converted into sold ones. Does this happen only after the payment is released following the booking or is it an issue that needs to be addressed?
