I'm not sure if I came on an off day but this place is mediocre at best. I had the soup dumplings, Dan Dan noodles and sesame chicken and all of them were bland and just passable. The service was good and friendly but food was a miss. Disappointed as it's so close to my office
Be the first to ReplyGreat neighborhood gem.
no frills but very clean and modern space. Good prices + generous portions. Specifically I got the eggplant with garlic sauce, and a lamb (mutton) dry pot. Meat was tender, and the spice level was perfect (I asked for medium). I'm pretty sure I've ordered this via uber eats too. All the dishes are done well and authentic (there's also more Americanized dishes like general tso if that's up your alley but I always eat the more traditional Chinese dishes)
Be the first to ReplyI came here for a quick solo lunch on a weekday.
The lunch special is $12.95 or $13.95 depending on what you get. I got the fish fillet with black bean sauce which was $13.95 I appreciated that the dish came with onions and bell peppers for that full meal experience, though they were on the crunchier side. The fish was plentiful and tender, with good flavor from the black beans. I struggled to finish everything so the portion size is definitely good! The hot and sour soup was a bit more sour and less savory than I would've liked, but it was still good. Overall the service was quick and cordial. They have small tables for solo diners which is very nice! I would come here again if I'm in the area and need a quick bite to eat.

This place was okay, the dry pepper chicken was flavorful, I just didn't like the sichuan peppercorns numbing my mouth, (I'm not used to that) the steamed dumplings were good. Customer service was great, very attentive and nice, and the place looked very clean!

Solid food and really fast delivery time (probably 15 minutes from ordering to having it at our table). We got the fried vegetable dumplings, scallion pancakes, veg lo mein, pan fried string beans, and spicy eggplant. Everything was great. Recommended!

This is the most authentic Sichuan restaurant in this neighborhood. We will come back here and wont consider other nearby Sichuan restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyVery tasty and spicy! It's clean and flavorful.
Servers are nice. I would recommend it over so many other over priced restaurants! If you like spicy food def give it a try!

I went to Mala House on a random Wednesday for lunch and it was pretty much packed, and rightfully so. Whether it was people waiting for takeout orders or just dining in for a quick lunch, the staff at Mala House definitely accommodate everyone to the best of their abilities. I got the dry pot beef lunch special and it was very good. However, I have had better hence I gave it 4 stars. For the price and area, it is a solid option for lunch and I can see why it's so busy.

Solid mala place that didn't have any wait on a Friday night. Everything was delicious and affordable for NYC standards. Really recommend dropping by for a visit!
Be the first to ReplyWe'll, crap.
We've been sleeping on this joint. It's been around for over a year and I haven't even noticed it when searching for Szechuan in and around our neighborhoods. Regardless, I'm glad we finally stopped in, because it's an easy addition to our mala rotation. As others have noted, the service here is exceptional. We were promptly greeted and seated (which wasn't a problem, given the place was dead empty on a frigid late-February Monday evening). Everyone was super attentive and multiple servers checked in on us throughout our meal. Empty plates were whisked away within moments and my water glass never fell below half empty. I would've been concerned about potential overstaffing issues if not for the fact that--during our hour-ish meal--we probably saw two dozen takeout and delivery orders also get handled. Clearly, they're not slow on the to-go business. As far as cuisine goes, we never order Szechuan without trying the dan dan noodles and Mala House's are classic. Their price point is slightly lower than many of their competitors and the portion size is generous. In fact, the theme of our meal was unexpectedly sizable portions. The same held true of their wontons in chili oil and our scallion style beef. Between two sturdy six-foot (give or take a few inches) guys, we barely polished off those three dishes. Upon leaving, we were both heartily satisfied without feeling grossly full.Mala House isn't short on competitors within a 10- or 15-block radius; as a more casual cousin to the likes of CHILI, Café China, or Han Dynasty, it confidently holds its own.

I was looking up another spot on Google Maps and this place popped up. It has good ratings, so we thought we'd give it a shot. The restaurant was clean, airy and bright. We were seated right away around 8:00 which was nice. The food...well I didn't look up until I had finished half of my scallion chicken. It's supposed to be a sharing portion. Well, that didn't happen. Others in my party got the braised pork belly and Spicy Chicken with Flat Noodles. Bothe we're reported and excellent. This is definitely a place that I'll return to.

Pretty solid, service was very fast and the beef wrap was authentic and tasty! It was my first time having dry pot and I found it a bit salty but quantity was good. Overall worth a try
Be the first to Replyone of the best Sichuan experiences we have had in NYC.
the restaurant looks plain, clean and spartan. The food however was brilliant, spicy, delicious and aromatic. we had wonton soup, (the wontons were nice but soup a bit bland) Dan Dan noodle(very very yummy and delicious), chicken dry hotpot(very tasty and live that the chicken was not battered/deep fried) and fish in green Sichuan peppercorn(lovely aromatic and flavorful broth with slices of fish poached in the broth)Service was attentive and polite. We appreciated the hotpot recommendation. Loved it very much and would go back and highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyPretty good place for Chinese food.

This place doesn't look like much, but the food is pretty good.Stumbled into this place having just consumed ramen, pizza, and boba (long story), so we didn't order too much. What we got:Chili oil wontons- solid, though not standout. Not that spicy.La zi ji- very good fry job, with a nice crunch without feeling overly greasy.Shui zhu niu- Sichuan classic executed well. Meat was tender, no complaints here. The interior is quite plain and it was empty by the time we arrived Sunday night (I assume they do a lot of takeout business), but the food is legit!
Be the first to ReplyReally good.
General Tso's was outstanding. Dumpling appetizer even better. The dumplings in hot chili oil are excellent. Great Lo Mein also. A little pricy but that's Manhattan for ya!!
Be the first to ReplyBadass Chinese food.
Always piping hot and well made with generous serving size. The lunch specials and an incredible deal!

Ordered our food a couple hours ago, purposefully cancelled at the last minute. Could've cancelled hours ago and now I'm left without food since everything is closed.
Be the first to ReplyLucky for us, the appetite for and familiarity of Szechuan
Lucky for us, the appetite for and familiarity of Szechuan food is as strong as it was for Cantonese food in past decades such that everywhere you look in NY, a new Szechuan restaurant seems to open up. Mala House is a lot less glamorous than many of the buzzier ones opening in the city, but the flavors don't lie and they have a solid lunch special. That's important in Flatiron, where at least some percentage of office workers are back. It was during one of my days in the office that I stopped in for a quick lunch. The restaurant is somewhat small but it feels like a mostly takeout operation so we easily sat at one of their empty tables. Service was prompt and thankfully their kitchen is speedy. We enjoyed the fish fillet with silky tofu which had just a hint of spice and lots of flavor that went so well with a bowl of hot rice. Similarly the mapo tofu was the perfect complement to a bowl of white rice, this time with punchier, tongue numbing peppercorns. The food overall was tasty though oilier and saltier than I would've preferred. If you're in the area you could do worse than enjoying a hearty feast here.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend and I had a wonderful experience eating here
My friend and I had a wonderful experience eating here tonight and very much enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and delicious food. In the cold weather, I was craving beef noodle soup and Mala House absolutely delivered on its take of the dish with tender beef, rich soup, and thick noodles. My friend really liked the house special rice noodle dish she ordered as well. We're lastly very grateful for the waitress who took such good care of us.Looking forward to coming back for dinner soon!
