Bad service for delicious food
While the food was delicious, the service left a lot to be desired. The place was mostly empty on a slow Tuesday night, but the waiter rushed us to order within 2 minutes of sitting, and another member of the service team tried to clear our plates 10 minutes after we were served -- touching our plates without even asking us! Really disappointing service. That said, the spicy noodles were delicious.

Our waiter, Mohamed, made our dinner a night to remember. Suggestions of traditional dishes were just what we wanted for our first tastes of Malaysian cuisine. Spicy Hakka Noodles and Penang Street Noodles were our favorites. Michelin-starred 2023.

Came here for Friday dinner—made reservations at a high top, and were seated right away. The place was fairly packed and had an energetic vibe. Food was good—although we did enjoy the food, I didn’t find anything particularly special. My top favorites were the Ayam Goreng (Fried chicken with salted duck yolk), Char Kway Teow (Penang Street Noodle—but overloaded with Chinese sausage vs. shrimp) and the Baby Bok Choy (the gravy is really good). For appetizer, the Chicken Sate was only decent if you ate it with the peanut sauce otherwise it’s bland—the Kerabu Mangga (Mango Salad) was okay, spicy kick, but an unnecessary big portion for an appetizer, that ended up going to waste. Cocktails were okay—I liked the Halia & Serai (Malaysian gimlet). Service was amazing—our server Caitlin was great—friendly and attentive. Note, this place does add an automatic 22% service fee that goes to all the staff.
Be the first to ReplyGood Dinner with Automatic Gratuity
It was a good experience at this Malaysian restaurant. They have outdoor seating and parking is on the street. We ordered beer, wine, a Chicken Curry dish, a noodle dish that was pretty spicy and a Tapioca pudding. Service was decent, there was enough attention. The Chicken Curry had the right amount of spices. Prices were a bit on the higher end for the quality of the decor and food. Be aware that it is restaurant policy to charge an automatic service charge of 22 percent. The good thing about it is the bill does not come with an additional tip line. Neighborhood is the fast changing upper northwest 14st area.
Be the first to ReplyAutomatic 22 Percent Gratuity Charge
My $22 plate of shrimp included 6 small shrimp and a few green beans as they dumped the red chili paste/Sambal jar into the bowl and called it homemade sauce. That was it.Usually, that portion is representative of a mezze plate or tapas of ajillos gambas--which are not considered entree size. I was still hungry. Be aware the they include an automatic 22 percent service charge. This increasingly annoying practice is becoming more common in DMV area. Not only is it presumptuous, but the receipt specifies that they are trying to pay higher wages to their wait staff. So rather than taking responsibility and increasing their salaries along with the food menu prices, they dump it on the role of "gratuity". That's a false flag for addressing wage equity. Will never recommend this place to anyone--which is said since there aren't many Malaysian places.
Be the first to ReplyClose to being in South East Asia
Our family dined here for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised our kids loved the food, especially the desert. They've never really had Malaysian food before but it worked out well. It was quite delicious, and almost everything was close to how I remembered it in South East Asia. Almost. Only negative was that when we walked in we were immediately reminded we only had 2 hours for the table that we got. Still a nice meal.

We made a special effort to eat here - we booked a table online and reserved the patio experience - ha ha what a joke - the patio is the sidewalk with an ugly gas pipe for company. The server Julio came to take our order when we ordered he said have another try because she has ordered the same dish, I think we know what we would like to eat. They had ran out of the wine that I ordered but gave me 2 half glasses and didn't charge so I was happy with that gesture. The food came but we had to ask for a knife and fork and we didn't get any napkins. When Julio came to clear the table he asked if we wanted a box so he brought the box but we had to fill the box and ask for a spoon to do it with. The eye watering $34 dollar service charge was the deal breaker where do these restaurants get off on expecting customers to pay the staff's wages is a liberty. Even if the service was first class 22% is taking the Mickey. Diner beware it's not that great so don't do it to yourselves. Julio never even acknowledged the tip or bid us good night. Good Night Makan we won't return

We tried Makan because the restaurant we had reservations for through open table was closed. Its only a few blocks from our house so we have been wanting to try it for a while. The inside of the restaurant is open, clean looking, and the seating is very comfortable. The menu is fairly small, but provides a good variety of appetizers and main meals to try. The food itself was ok (not great, not poor) compared to other restaurants in the area. Little things started to poke up though. When I unrolled my fork and knife from the napkin, there was a piece of old rice wedged between the prongs of the fork. Server took it and brought a new one. No big deal. There was also a weird odor from the drinking glass - I don't know if it was chemicals from being washed. Upon receiving the check, we saw that a 22% gratuity was automatically added....again no big deal but the server probably should have told us that the tip was already added in. At the end of the meal, 2 entrees, 1 appetizer, and 2 drinks (plus taxes and tips) came out to more than $100 for 2. For that, we would expect a more wow factor with the food. But, if you have never had Malay food, check it out. For us, this was a one and done experience and probably won't go back.

The food here is amazing! We had some starters and then I had the aubergine entrée. Delicious! Servers are not incredibly friendly, but very fast and precise. Prices are in the dc range

Went with my wife and our daughter+fiancee. Really, a lovely meal from start to finish. Loved the Paneer appetizer, and the peanut sauce was perfect. Fried yucca was cooked well, solid if not outstanding. For my main I had the Penang Noodle, and for my taste it was spot on. Delicate sausage and shrimp and wide rice noodles in a flavorful and spicy sauce. I'm not someone who likes very hot food, but this was right at my limit, in a good way. My wife's mango salad was perhaps a bit too spicy for her, but very refreshing. Would definitely go again.
Be the first to ReplyGreat brunch of delicious Malaysian and fusion food
Our party of 6 dined outdoors. We received good service throughout the meal - taking order, re-filling water, offering suggestions. We ordered a wide variety of items, covering more than half the menu. Everything was delicious - especially loved the mango salad, Penang street noodles and the mee goreng. Fun cocktails.
Be the first to ReplyA fair attempt, but failed on a few levels
My husband and I were very much looking forward to our dinner here this evening, I having lived in KL for a few years and he being born and raised in Malaysia. I knew to check my expectations. One cannot expect exact replication from a far-off land due to the availability of exact ingredients and expertly trained staff. However, the execution tonight was poor. We were greeted by hurried door staff who were not rude, but not pleasant. Our only option was to sit at the bar. I was happy too, but my husband questioned why we were not seated at one of the many opened tables, inside or out. Possibly staffing shortages? It was not explained nor did we ask. The bar server was quick to assist and asked if we needed help with the menu, we did not [our mistake]. The plain roti was brought first. What was served was a roti drenched in butter. Had we asked for a roti bomb and they added sugar to this dish it would have been perfect, but for plain roti, it had far too much butter, no flavor of the bread could come thru. The Satay was very good. The peanut sauce was not what I was used to, but it went very well with the chicken. This was the best dish of the night. For the main course, we both ordered Pan Mee. I knew it would be spicy. In tonight's dish, we suspected they used too much of the oil from the chill oil pot. My mouth was so hot I had to ask for milk, which they did not have to serve. My husband's eyes were red and tearing. He was able to eat 75% of his. I only 25% of mine. I then ordered the coconut and pandan rice as a side hoping it would help absorb the chili oil. The flavor was fine, I could not taste any pandan. I suspect this should be expected because we cannot get pandan leaves here in the US and they must have used extract. We boxed the leftovers and brought them home hoping we can find a way to serve them for lunch tomorrow. Oh, the pulled tea with milk. It was actually the first thing served to us. We ordered it hot. It is close to authentic. We surmised that this restaurant uses evaporated milk and not condensed milk because the sweetness was lacking. When the bill came I was surprised to see a 22% service fee added. I thought it, well presumptuous to demand a tip. The tipping amount is for the customer to decide. I would have not given this amount of my own accord. I think 18% would have been my choice. As far as the service, once our server took our order, we did not see her again until we had to waiver her down for additional drinks, the ordering of the coconut and panda rice, the boxes to go, and the check. I don't know if she was afraid I was going to be upset over the fire in the bowl that was served to us or if that was her usual skill set. $99.18 for an incorrectly prepared meal and minimal service that included a forced 22% tip/service fee leads me to think that we may try this location again, but I won't be suggesting it. If my husband wants round two we will go. I am left...unimpressed.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Malaysian cuisine featured in Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand
This restaurant has been on my list for quite some time now especially since its been added to Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand for 2021. The DMV has been missing a quality Malaysian place since Penang closed in Bethesda years ago. I made reservations earlier in the week for a large party. Due to the new DC covid restrictions you do have to show your ID and vaccine card when dining here. Some of the dishes we ordered were Char Kway Teow, eggplant, chicken/tofu satay, Nasi Lemak, spicy hakka noodles, and the beef rendang. Wow flavors here were on point! My favorite was the rendang. Slow roasted meat, tender cuts and plenty of spices featured in this dish. Even after taking this home and eating it as a leftover there was still so much flavor left. The skewers are a must order with their peanut sauce. Definitely order any of the chicken dishes. The huge piece that we had reminded me of the amusement park turkey leg. Plenty of food for 4 people. The noodles were perfect. I loved the Char Kway because you get great cuts of the Chinese pork sausage, flat noodles and the flavors from the oyster sauce were delicious.
The hakka noodles is great dish if you love textures. You can't go wrong with a runny egg, fried shallows, minced beef and cabbage all over a bowl of fresh noodles. The Michelin guide definitely got their list right with Makan. There is an automatic charge of 22 % and even with that for +6 dishes my meal came out to under $40. Portion side here is no joke. Usually restaurants are stingy with their rice, but we got large portions of rice per entree. Service here is a great as our server knew all of the speciality items and spice levels. You get high food quality, service and at a great value here. I'll definitely be back to try their roti canai and desserts!
Disappointed & pissed!
Very tasty food and I would likely give them 5 stars on that but that is it...rest was less than mediocre;
- Poor service as they rarely showed up if at all
- They expect you to order on your phone life your at a fastfood but charged 22% for service. Shameful!!!
- Delivered food when it was ready vs. sequencing it like it should be in any decent restaurant
- we celebrated a friends birthday & they indicated they would comp the desert and charged us for it...silly
So if this place thinks it will graduate to Michelin, I am afraid it is beyond fantasy. So those planning to visit, do a take-away and save yourself from the angst of poor service.
Disappointing for all the buzz and despite a great server
Our server was excellent. He explained both the food and drink well, needed for a menu that mixed Bahasa with brief English explanations. We did not resent the automatic 20% gratuity added to our bill.
A problem with our reservation was handled very poorly, and no one seemed to take responsibility for fixing it. Moreover, there was no gracious attempt to do service recovery since the “manager” was making drinks, too. Finally we were given a regular table after a couple who had their doggie bags when we arrived was given their bill 15 minutes later and left 5 minutes after that.
The “food comes when it’s ready” is an unfortunate habit from tapas restaurants, and it’s not assumed in Malaysia you’ll share smallish main courses, unlike In China where things are shared. For the profusion of plates, the restaurant should have bought bigger tables.
The food was ok, but disappointing in quantity (you’d better like rice!), and not photogenic at all. My Penang street noodles, our party’s favorite, might as well have been vegan: one small shrimp and no sausage any of us detected. The chicken (leg) special had good side spices and a flavorful crust, but was hard to share. There were five yucca fries with a spicy chutney, which was hard to share. The pineapple curry was tasty, as the local food critic had advised.
Disappointing.
Best Malaysian Food Ever!
There is no indoor seating during COVID 19. The service was fast and attentive. The food cam right after we finished one plate. We had the anchovies, spicy noodles, roti, and a few other things. The kids loved it and the dress code was casual. No need to dress up! We all loved it! Great meal!

Creative, perfectly prepared food and cocktails. We had a shredded mango salad, succulent skewered pork, and flavorful rice noodles with shrimp. The outdoor and indoor spaces are both comfortable and attractive. Highly recommended.

We had a fabulous dinner at this new Malaysian restaurant in Washington DC I have no idea what the food was called but it was delicious the dessert was spectacular and all of our entrées and we sampled almost everything on the menu was just bursting with flavor. We can’t wait to return it was a real experience. We had a great waitress and the staff all look like they really enjoyed being there, not stuffy like so many new restaurants in DC
