My favorite Mexican restaurant anywhere
I used to live in CU but have been gone for about 6 years. Was back for some family affairs and made sure to make this my dinner destination. Chalupas were just as delicious as I remembered and both the rice and beans were the most flavorful I’ve ever had in any Mexican restaurant. So glad this place has maintained the quality.

Very good location. Nice and chicky vibes. Food was fantastic, best birria ever had in my life. Service was a little bit slow but worth the wait. Cocktails are awesome. We had a very good meal with the family. If you want to beat the morning line get there when they open at 10AM otherwise there will be a waiting line :D

Our family and friends have always considered Maize at the Station one of if not the best Mexican venues in CU. I am saddened to not be able to make that claim at this time. We visited the restaurant for dinner on a Saturday evening. Maize was busy but no wait for a table. Of the 7 attending, four had a house margarita, two beers and one did not have any alcohol. Service was at the best fair. Food was overall good but not great. The house margarita was very poor. Much to sweet and no tequila flavor detectable. The real surprise was a added 25% gratuity. I typically leave from 20-25% for good service. We were forced to pay 25% even thought he menu listed 20%. Based on the service we received 15% would have been a stretch. Bill was $27/head and one person did not have a entree. and no appetizers.

This was our first experience at Maize and we can't wait to go back! We ate outside on the patio and although the kitchen exhaust fans were a little loud, we enjoyed the overall atmosphere. Most importantly, the food was outstanding! Everyone in our six-person party was blown away by their entrees and we heartily recommend the Carne Asada, Fajitas, Flautas and for sure the guacamole!

Don't trust the reviews here from people local to Champaign- they don't know what real Mexican food should be. Maize has the best, most authentic Mexican food in Champaign-Urbana, hands down. The variety is excellent, and they offer a number of great vegetarian options that are hard to find even outside the Midwest, such as squash blossoms and huitlacoche. My only issues with Maize are that they don't allow dogs on their patio, and that they don't make all of their vegetarian options clear on their menu, which particularly makes it hard to order for takeout. But it is undoubtedly one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, in Champaign or elsewhere.

Very good Mexican Restaurant and a local institution. We really liked the Chicken tostada and marinated pork Chalupas. Nice and ample outdoor seating respecting amply social distancing rules in IL
Be the first to ReplyBest tasting Mexican food in Champaign-Urbana (IMHO)!
Visited Maize At The Station very many times and as title says, I think it is the best tasting Mexican food in Champaign-Urbana! Dined in and takeout, all seasons of the year - I am writing this post for all these past experiences, all pre-COVID. Location is tucked in a busy food area of CU, with limited parking spaces, near the train station. Good dinining-in area with copper-accent tables, professional staff. Bathroom could be better maintained. Fast order turnaround even in busy times. Food is where is at (extra point from Average)! I (and friends/colleagues I know) love everything on their menu - my favourites are still the tacos (Mexican-style for me) but you cannot go wrong with anything. Even the chips and salsa are excellent tasting and just the right amount of crunchy and spicy! Other places might have more friendlier/curteous staff but they cannot beat Maize on the food :) Will always recommend and return for their excellent food! P.S. they have another location on Green Street near UIUC, same great food but less seating - more campus style. Check it out!
Be the first to ReplyFresh, great flavors (and gluten free)
We eat out a lot and are gluten free but we choose restaurants with many offerings (not just gluten free eating), so we aren’t so limited. This ended up being a great option just because they hand make their corn tortillas and only fry tortillas in the fryer. So many fresh meat and veggie options and well beyond the standard taco or enchilada choices (great gorditas!). We loved that we could mix and match whatever we were interested in and the prices were fair. Loved this place, and its charming casual space in the old station.
Be the first to ReplyLarger space, same good food
They opened this second spot some time ago. It’s much larger than the other place. Much better to dine in. Food is good as always. Try the tacos al pastor
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Mexican vacation
Had a quick trip back to Mexico and had a good meal while we were there. The food was like you would while visiting Mexico. The portion sizes were big enough to bring home food later, sorry puppy. I had a Russo Mexicano which is a White Russian with Tequila. The service was good, plus there is parking in the back but not a lot which could be a problem.
