😍 5/5 - A bit of the curate's egg

There is a bit of the curate's egg about Lympstone Manor. Overall, it certainly deserves its 5 star rating, but that is made up of 7 stars for the restaurant but rather less for the hotel. Michael Caines has certainly not lost his touch - the food is truly sensational. I first tasted his cuisine decades ago at Gidleigh Park and have been keen to experience it again ever since. It was worth waiting for. My wife and I both ordered the Estuary Menu and it was beyond comparison with anywhere other than Nathan Outlaw - and that is as good compliment as I can offer. The service also matched the high standards of the food. Highly recommended and well worth the not inconsiderable price. The hotel is also of a high standard, the staff are exceptional and a lot of money has clearly been spent on the refurbishment of the stately mansion. But sadly the decoration just does not quite work. The attempt to complement the traditional architecture with modern furnishings treads a fine line between being kitsch and just plain naff - and sadly it does not always stay on the right side. It is not helped by the inclusion of far too many sculptures being offered for sale virtually everywhere you look. I do not appreciate being sold to when I am spending a lot of money to stay in a luxury hotel. It might be that the 'look' at Lympstone Manor is just not to my taste, but it seems a huge missed opportunity to create something really special.
