Best southern food I've ever had and I've been to great
Best southern food I've ever had and I've been to great places in the south. The chef and staff are a must to come see. You feel at home and the tastes and smells are devine. You must make this a go to when in Chicago, if you don't, you are doing it wrong!

This was some of the best comfort I've had the pleasure of tasting! The chef makes most things to order and you can taste the authenticity of the recipes that clearly come from someone's kitchen. I'm actually glad I don't live closer because I'd want this weekly! Be patient with the wait time because there is a few people in the back and one in the front!
Be the first to ReplyI understand the hype.
I really do. I understand why this place is so busy and the food takes forever. The food here is incredible. From the chicken to the mac n cheese to the french toast. Everything was so damn good. I got the Nashville Chicken and Waffles and they accidentally gave me the wrong thing so they gave me a waffle on the side free of charge. Very nice folks who work there. I will be back. The food is too good not to be. This place is busy so if you are willing to wait an hour for food, I would say it is worth it.
Be the first to ReplyHad dinner last evening at this wonderful restaurant.
The staff couldn't have been more friendly and the food was excellent! Some of the best fried chicken I have ever had and the mac and cheese...outstanding! Too bad they are leaving Lincoln Square this fall, I'll sure be back before they move.
Be the first to ReplyEverything about this place was great.
The food was amazing. We got a little bit of everything and I feel like I'm back in my grandmothers kitchen. The service is filled with young spirit who are trying to help your every needs and are very polite. The ambience of this place is very rustic and feels homey.
Be the first to ReplyHad the shrimp and grits.
They were waaaay too greasy. I mean just filled with grease and butter. You could see the pool of grease/oil/butter underneath. The taste was good but it was just overloaded with oil. I also had a desert but for some reason they didn't bring it out with my main course? I would expect it to be brought out at the same time or close to it. I had to tell someone that I had them. I'm not sure if they planned on giving them to me later but that was the impression I got. I might be back to try some of the other dishes. Service was ok, but be aware that the place is really small and you may be better off with take out.

Wow. A time was had. This was so so so soooooo good!! We arrived around 5/6 pm on a Friday and tables were almost all full. We both ordered the fried chicken, one with yams and the other with collard greens and a side of mac and cheese. We also got a cornbread to share. It does take a while for the food to come but it was so worth it. The fried church was perfectly crispy and the portions were huge. I tried the yams which were yummy! Mac and cheese was okay the cornbread was just chefs kiss!!! Will definitely return.

Its very busy during lunch so you might want to go either very early or very late. I left my name at the front however they never called me to let me know that my table was ready, I had to follow up. The food is OK, the chicken doesn't have any flavor, no spices are added whatsoever. The Mac N Cheese is fantastic!!! Probably the best I've ever had.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best Mac and cheese ever, and their chicken
Probably the best Mac and cheese ever, and their chicken and waffles were pretty immaculate too!

The shrimp and grits blew my mind and had so much more/different flavors than I was expecting! Mac and cheese is amazing too! You can tell the Chef/Owner really cares about the food and loves what he does through the quality of the food and the service. Can't wait to try more menu items in the future!

Came here on a rainy Sunday excited to experience this restaurant everybody had been talking about. Unfortunately, I had a not so great experience. We waited for about 45 minutes to hear that the food was not ready and that the "owner" was sorry for the delay after I asked why a table (a white couple) had been served before us. After stating my concerns and frustrations, the owner cursed and caused a scene at the back of the restaurant (where I could hear him) and told me I was the problem for feeling some type of way. In my years of also being a business owner, have never experienced something like this. Maybe he was triggered but the apology was not accepted - as that is unacceptable behavior from an "owner". Never will I ever give my money to such an establishment.

Over all food was good, but the wait was crazy and the place wasn't that busy I waited 45mins to an hour for some chicken and waffles and Mac and cheese which I don't think I should've been waiting that long for, customer service was on point and they always walked by to check on me.

I've been going to Luella's for at least 5 years or more and it is my own personal belief that it has officially blossomed into all it should be. There is southern comfort ambiance, fellowship, spirit, the staff and patrons bubble together perfectly, mood, sway, great music OH AND THE FOOOODDDDD!!!! The food makes me wanna slap my mama. I'm not trying to die so I am leaving this great review.

Luella's is locate on the north side of Chicago and I live on the south side. I went to a play in the area and researched black owned business in the area to have dinner thereafter. Since this is black history month I have been trying different establishment to support black owned business. I was greeted by a man young and asked how many in my party. I was seated immediately and told he would be right back with my silverware and some water. After about 15 minutes I got his attention and reminded him that I had place my order thru the QR code and was still waiting on my water. I ordered the chicken and waffle. My food was not hot and the chicken was greasy and the waffle was extra crispy. I was disappointed and would not recommend this place if you're looking for fine dining.

As someone who hails from the south, this is truly a hidden gem in Chicago-land! Although a little pricey, the food and the service can't be beat and I will be returning again and again for their biscuits, butter, and fried chicken! We have also had the gumbo and the mac and cheese, neither of which are dishes you should miss out on.
Be the first to ReplyCome out to support this restaurant during Black restaurant
Come out to support this restaurant during Black restaurant week, we are the first ones in restaurant it's cold. We ask about the restaurant week and the cashier told us they sold out the day before. We order and wait, while two white customers come in a male black manager comes out greets them asked them is there first time here, mind you my wife and I are across the table from them no greeting.
Be the first to ReplyMy Goddaughter and I dine once a year for her birthday.
We always seek out different Black owned restaurants. This year we decided on Luella's Southern Kitchen. Neither of us had dined here before so it was a good start. Her Grandmother joined us this year, it was good to see Ms. Ethel out.Getting to the reason for my post.I didn't know there were separate dining hours; 10:00A-3:00P and 5:00p-9:00. We dined during the brunch hour on a Saturday afternoon. We each had separate meals, chicken & waffles, Mac & cheese and Shrimp & grits. The Mac & cheese was cheesy, the waffles were soft & moist and the grits were very creamy with the shrimp being a little spicy. However, everything was delicious. I also ordered chicken & collard greens to go for my hubby. The chicken was good, however, the collard greens were too oily. Not sure if it was due to them being last in the pot or how they are prepared. There is quite a wait because each meal is cooked to order. I will say it is worth the wait. I would recommend this quaint eatery but I don't think it could host large parties unless they make it a private party. Reservations are not accepted unless there is a party of 10 or more. The downside of the restaurant is you order off the tables QR code and you pay & tip before your meal is brought to you. I understand if you are ordering to go but we dined inside and had to pay before our meal was served. I'm guessing this was lowers the overhead cost but to include a tip when the only service you receive is someone bringing your plate to the table. If you are North of the City and would like some southern style cooking try this place; I am certain you will return. We were so excited to get our meal we forgot to take pictures. I can say that the pictures on the website are pretty accurate.
Be the first to ReplyOh Luella's, you really know what your doing! My daughter
Oh Luella's, you really know what your doing! My daughter and I came in on a Friday evening around 6pm. We were able to get a seat, small home feeling vibe. We knew from the ambience that we were going to like our food. It smelled heavenly. We ordered a lot of food, lol. We ordered the hot chicken and waffles, the salmon crockets, greens, Mac and cheese and biscuits. The greens we amazing! Finally, someone that makes greens the right way, so flavorful, Mac and cheese, forget about it, out of This world!!! Hot chicken so darn juicy! Oh wait the jam with the biscuits, so yummy!! The service, be prepared to be patient it will absolutely worth the wait. Everyone was very nice. Will definitely be back and will definitely recommend! Trust me food come is an understatement!

10/10! My cousin who never has good southern comfort food from where she's at really wanted to try this place out, this too was also my first time and wow staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu. We got there chicken and waffles, corn bread skillet, Luella's ice tea, and chicken biscuits and gravy.
Be the first to ReplyMy thoughts on this place have changed.
After a few short visits to Luella, it quickly became one of my favorite spots in Chicago. With the variety of restaurants in the city, it takes a lot to land in my top 5. We'll today, that changed. I treated my sister for a birthday brunch and we both left somewhat disappointed. My sister and I arrived around 10:45, sat ourselves and ordered at our table using their online method (which might've been a mistake). I paid $90.00 up front. We waited for over an hour and some change, with no confirmation or follow up from the "waiter" or any other staff member for that matter. We eventually decided to flag him down after he avoided our table for some time and his only comments were "I know y'all are hungry, we're working on yours. You're next." No apologies for the wait. We were in fact hungry. We received our food at lukewarm temperature and it was good but not worth the trouble! The French toast wasn't nearly as tasty as it was in the past. It was somewhat dry and brittle. Quality has changed. The restaurant staff seemed to be overwhelmed with the business today. Not sure if they have the capacity to sustain it. I hate to have these kinds of experiences at minority owned businesses. Unfortunately, I will likely not return.
Be the first to ReplyI wanted to love Luella's.
I came for Sunday brunch with a friend and everything on the menu looked amazing. But their service was disappointing. Our server was very attentive but the kitchen service was lacking. After ordering, it took about 10 minutes to get our coffees and then an additional 35 minutes to get the first dish we ordered. Yep. 45 minutes for the first plate. And then 5 more minutes for the rest of our meal. The food was amazing. We got a biscuit with gravy and chicken and jalaepenos and then a french toast dish. I forget the names of both and their online menu doesn't list their brunch menu unless you're looking during brunch hours.Their ordering system is kind of annoying. You order from your phone but it doesn't seem to be an efficient ordering system because it required a decent amount of instruction on how to use and pay.Overall, I want to say I'll be back but honestly I'm not sure. I normally don't spend more than an hour at brunch (unless it's boozy) and the fact that it takes almost an hour to get your food almost ruined the entire experience.

Updating my review from 2 years ago and this place is still ridiculous. The chicken is unbelievable, definitely my favorite in the city and honestly possibly better than any I've had in the south. Lobster Mac is no longer on the menu which is unfortunate but it's replaced by baked Mac which is awesome. The shrimp and grits are incredible. Top notch corn bread with honey butter. I still wish Luella was my mom.

What can I say? Between them making you to pay first or the comedic 35-45 min wait for just simple chicken and waffles, I was underwhelmed. While the chicken itself was good, the waffles left a lot to be desired. They were soggy and filled with crystallized sugar bits. Although I will say that they had good shrimp and grits but will never be visiting this place again when I'm back in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is amazing and I can't wait to come back.
I had the buttermilk fried chicken with the Incredibly flavorful and tender greens. I also ordered the max & cheese. Don't hesitate to order it! My only regret was I was too full to order another serving! I'll be back soon and I'll be recommending Luella's to all my friends.

We couldn't decide what NOT to get after looking around at other tables, so we splurged on sharing three entrees and happy we did. I can't exclaim enough how much I loved the chicken and waffle--best I've had. (And I'd like to say I've tried many around the city) Very friendly staff. Ordering and payment is a little unorthodox via QR code, then food is brought to your table. It gets busy so plan for that
