Great food, lovely owner(s) ...
This was my second visit and Lynda's third. This is such an amazing find for a small venue. Run by a husband and wife (I believe) and exceptional food and service. Very surprisingly a Saturday afternoon was very quiet but the food was so so so good. One of the best meals we've had for quite some time, and it was up there with the best 3*. We realise that the star system has very many facets but as far as the food is concerned, Chef, take a bow. We shall be back in due course and look forward to the pleasant exchanges with staff as well as great food

I wanted to book an evening table but none were available. However they managed to give us a table at lunchtime. Wonderful. The flavours of every dish were mind-blowing. I suspect that every dish was classically French based. Is it expensive, sort of. Is it worth paying the money? Absolutely. Exceptional food never comes cheap. Do yourself a favour and awaken your taste buds with a visit here. It's an experience.

The food is outstanding and the restaurant relaxing and welcoming. Everything from starters to dessert was beautifully presented and extremely tasty. Definitely worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyWill see how I feel if/when I'm passing by next time .....
4 stars because the food preparation technique was excellent. But, based on this experience, I'm 50/50 as to if I would try again if passing by. This is just my personal option, and obviously based on my palate, but I found both of my dishes to be overly rich. My dishes would have also benefitted from some brighter/lighter colored ingredients, in terms of presentation. Service from the older lady was perfect, professional with the right balance of friendliness, but I found the younger server to be extremely cold, almost aloof ! The lunch special pricing is more than reasonable for the overall dining experience. I did have an early lunch appointment and with only two other tables occupied, it really did feel 'dead'. Once some other tables were occupied, the atmosphere improved.

Incredible food and service, thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Champignon Sauvage. Highlights for me were the hake starter and venison main course. The cheese board is also something to witness!

This was our third visit to our favourite UK restaurant. This time we came with friends. The food, service and timing are impeccable. We all enjoyed every course and all the amuse bouches. This is not a place to come to be wowed by smoke and foam and chefs showing off. Just perfect cooking by a master, served by a master of hospitality.
Be the first to ReplyLe Champignon Sauvage a quiet gem
Our traditional pre Christmas lunch with friends didn't disappoint. Interesting what people want, I'm of an age when a quiet restaurant where you can talk comfortably is a bonus, but maybe not for everyone who wants their wine glass filled rapidly. Food was very nice with lovely amuse bouche and the cost reasonable.

What a great place to fine dine. Beautiful food, thoroughly enjoyed every course. What a treat! Great price too! Many thanks for a lovely lunch.

It’s an austere atmosphere.Very few other diners on a Saturday lunchtime. The Romanian greeter was nice but we couldn’t understand her explanations. We all wondered why she was there. No warmth or welcome . We all had the set courses and the food was superb . We were surprised and pleased that the excellent wine list was not too expensive. We had two bottles of Morgan . It may have been the owner who brought the cheese . It was a brilliant selection and we asked her to choose for us . It was a great choice . We all enjoyed an excellent lunch , high quality food at a reasonable price. We will return .

Michelin star restaurant that has a quirky cottage industry vibe. Run by a husband and wife team who are truly passionate about their product. The menu is small but very well chosen. Each course was beautifully executed both in flavour and presentation. The decor could probably do with an update but the food could not be bettered.

Fantastic meal as always. Family lunch today with attentive service and delicious food. The scallop starter was divine! Will keep coming back!

First we came to the restaurant we loved it so much we wanted to come back for a very special occasion. Helen, I’ve emailed you to let you know how let down and disappointed I feel. We went to dine for a 60th birthday celebration and we had made our reservation having visited the restaurant previously. We travelled two and a half hours to Cheltenham and booked overnight accommodation with the sole purpose of coming to dine. We arrived at 7.15pm and spend 15mins at door (in the rain) waiting for the door to be opened. The restaurant was in darkness and I had to check that I had reserved the correct evening. Our reservation was made for 7.30pm and at no time were we told not to arrive early. The door was unlocked at 7.30pm precisely. Our initial greeting was less than friendly by the waitress. The restaurant was soulless, no ambiance, no music - (which would be fine if the restaurant wasn’t like a morgue!) We were the only two in the restaurant. On checking there were only two other couples booked we were informed the reason being “there was a restriction on diners as the chef was on his own”. I appreciate the awarded Michelin star is for the wonderful food served but the customer overall experience is surely an important aspect. I cannot tell you how very disappointed and let down I feel. We chose to leave as we did not want to spend an evening in a cold, soulless environment with no ambiance or people and a less than friendly greeting - not great for a 60th birthday celebration. I find the lack of reviews over the last few months very odd!!
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best value starred restaurant in the UK right now
Another flawless meal at Le Champignon Sauvage, with the highlights being the cheese selection and of course Helen’s wonderful service. A must visit when in Cheltenham!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great service in a library environment.
The quality of food was excellent and the service was attentive without being pretentious. My only disappointment relates to the atmosphere within the restaurant. It felt soulless and it was so quiet. On a positive note I’d highly recommend the dining experience, the chef is extremely talented.

Husband booked this restaurant as a treat for a special birthday Daughter is vegetarian and we'd called ahead to request vegetarian meal for her...it certainly went beyond our expectations. Welcomed by a very friendly & polite host who took our coats and invited us to take seats in the seating area or in the dining room, we chose to go straight to our table. The restaurant is very quiet despite being on a main road (parking is available on side streets nearby) Offered delicious canapés (incl vegetarian choice) and amazing fresh-baked breads incl one with bacon that was more like a cake (absolutely fantastic) The service, the food (husband and son especially liked the cheese course, of which there was an enormous choice), and the surroundings were great. I had the lamb as a main course and was advised it is sourced via a butcher very local to the restaurant and from a farm only a few miles away. The only thing I would have liked was some gentle/quiet background music (understand that there is a need for a licence to play music in public places, but it may have added to the ambience) but this did not detract from the overall experience which my husband our young adult offspring and I experienced. It was so good that our daughter, who graduates university this year has even said she may like to have her celebratory meal there after grad ceremony Highly recommend

Really enjoyed our meal, the food was absolutely delicious & beautifully presented. The pre dessert was was probably my favourite, this along with an amuse bouche made the whole meal excellent value for money. The only negative was the atmosphere, it was definitely lacking. Much too quiet & a little stiff. Would still go back just for the food!!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful, traditional MIchelin Star food
Lovely welcome and ambience. The food was absolutely delicious. Fantastic value for money as well. Reasonably priced wine list and excellent service delivered with kindness, professionalism and care. No fancy dried ice, smoke or tricks, just beautifully prepared and presented food.

Fantastic meal, lovely succulent, sweet scallops, followed by excellent venison finished with chocolate delice. Delicious, thanks .

We have just ventured here for the first time. The welcome was warm and the wonderful cooking was punctuated by tiny bursts of unexpected flavours. The experience was perfect in every way. We can't wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyFaultless food and always a warm welcome
I have had the pleasure of eating at le champignon sauvage several times over the years and it has maintained its impeccable standards throughout. It is fine dining but at a really very reasonable price, and the experience comes without the stuffiness that sometimes can be found at restaurants of this quality. Brilliant food executed superbly. The hake, venison and lemon meringue dessert today were delicious, and the little extra touches added wonderful layers to a faultless meal. And quite simply the cheese selection is one of the best I have ever seen! The warm welcome from Helen also made it such a special lunch. I will continue to return as often as I am able and know I will never be disappointed.

Have always wanted to go to this restaurant and never had. Was always a bit daunted that it would be a bit ‘posh’ over the years, but we shouldn’t have worried. Service was really helpful, very attentive. Food-wise, everything brilliant but the cheese board was THE best cheese board we have ever had. And we’ve had a few over the years…

Wow, what a superb experience! Came for dinner on my 40th birthday to le champignon sauvage. The wife had asked if I wanted to go to Venice or Rome, "no", I said "let's go to Cheltenham!". I have long been a fan of David and Helen's from a far with their experience and work ethic really striking chords as to "how it should be" to run a high end restaurant. And, boy, they did not disappoint! Helen was the most charming hostess and a stalwart professional in her conduct at the table. So very efficient and hard working, managing the floor like a Strictly Come Dancing 10/10. Everything was so smooth. The dining room itself is warm and inviting with comfortable layout and calm ambience. David and the team exceeded all my expectations on the food. The quality at every turn was faultless with stunning flavour and texture combinations. Everything from the home made bread selection, the whole meal through to the petit fours just oozed quality. The little surprises, like the amuse bouche and pre-dessert, were incredible. Thank you so much for the most wonderful experience that will stay with me and I will definitely return. I cannot recommend Le Champignon Sauvage enough.

Remains superb and a real delight to return . The menu is consistently exceptional and there was nothing to fault . Helen is a delight , running the front of house and David works his magic behind the scenes. The cheeseboard is worth going for alone . Excellent value for a special night.
