This is one of my go to places for when people are visiting
This is one of my go to places for when people are visiting from out of town! I've had most of the vegetarian items on the menu and they are all great. My go to favorites are the bolani, the harissa aioli fries, the ashuk dumplings, and eggplant vegetarian entrée. Additionally, I have had the okra and pumpkin vegetarian entrees which are both great. My friends have enjoyed the chicken kebabs. Also the five lions is a really great cocktail -its nice and spiced but also light.

Incredible food! Everything was delicious and the service was wonderful. Definitely our favorite meal during our 5 days in DC- highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyI love Lapis, delicious food everytime.
That's not what this review is about. They are now doing 20% autogratuity and they aren't announcing it to people aside from the fine print on paper. Pay your workers fairly or explicitly tell me when there is a 20% fee. I am sick and tired of this deception. I tip 20% every damn time already. Pay your workers fairly. Pay your fairly. Pay your fairly. I will upgrade my review to the 5 stars that your food and location deserves if the auto-grat is removed.
Be the first to ReplyNear a lot in Admo, hard to find parking so walk.
Food was good but some dishes were dry. Maybe I ordered to much the last visit. Everyone was friendly but not in a rush to get back.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyed a delicious Afghani dinner at Lapis.
We started off our meal with the beef and lentil dumplings and sambosa trio which were delicious. For our entrees we ordered the Qabuli polow, mixed meat grill platter, and buranee bademjan. Finally for dessert we ordered the pistachio cake and rose and pistachio and ice cream which was divine. We also ordered some chai to end the meal. We we're definitely in a food coma after all that delicious food. The location, food, ambience, decor, and service were all impeccable. Really enjoyed our time here, and can't wait to come back and try more Afghan dishes.

We loved the aushak dumplings, kabuli pilao was so fragrant. The eggplant and spinach dishes were really good as well. I highly recommend this place! Definitely need to make a reservation though as they are really popular
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, atmosphere and service.
Highly recommend for any occasion. I recommend you make reservations as the place is usually very busy.

I'm slowly but surely making my way through the DC Bib Gourmands, and was delighted to try out brunch at Lapis today! They do have a deal where you pay $35 and can choose three different items but you can also order from the regular menu as well. Or, you can forgo the deal and order a la carte. The vibes are incredible, with beautiful rugs, vases, and large mirrors. The service was fine, but nothing spectacular. A lot of our food came out all at once, and I wish it was more staggered. The stars of my meal were the cafe con leche, the karayee (def add the seasoned beef) and the lapis pancakes. The mantoo classic dumplings are also spectacular, my absolute favorite thing I tried. We got a serving of four and treated it like an appetizer. I also tried the frittata, which was fine but tasted a little earthy. The butter croissant was also fine, although if it wasn't part of the brunch deal I'm not sure if I would get it again. I can't wait to come back for lunch or dinner!!
Be the first to ReplyI'm taking off one star for the noise.
It's one of those places where you have to yell to hear each other. The food, however, was excellent. My husband had the lamb shank and I had the quabilli palow, which is a mound of spiced rice with chunks of lamb covered in sauteed match stick carrots and raisins. I was disappointed in the bulani because it was tough. I've had so many good dishes of this that I was very disappointed. The service was fine, nothing exceptional. Take note that the gratuity is included in the bill. Make sure you don't get seated near the dish return. That couple looked miserable.
Be the first to Replycute restaurant in adams morgan.
quantity of food was pretty small but tasted great. would definitely recommend! i went for brunch and it was a good vibe.
Be the first to ReplyI always have an incredible experience at Lapis! I've been
I always have an incredible experience at Lapis! I've been here for big birthday meals and with a small group of friends. The customer service is on point. I also have a nut allergy and they are always super accommodating. Their rosewater pancakes never get old! This is definitely a DC staple for me.
Be the first to ReplySince many wrote about the bolani, I thought I'd try it too.
I tried it in all four flavors and thought it was okay and not my flavor profile. I found it to be bland and dry, like eating matzos. The cardamom pistachio pancakes were yummy. Some would add maple syrup, but I found the default sweetness just right. Portions wise, it looks small, but I think it is enough for one person to eat.The sheer chai was the best chai I've ever had and lives up to the raving reviews. I would have ordered a second if I wasn't already full.Take note that the beetroot taro latte does not contain coffee, so it's more like a taro flavored milk. I didn't finish it. While it was tasty, the thought of drinking a whole mug of milk kept me from finishing it. It's pretty and pink.If I return, it would be for the sheer chai and the service. Otherwise the food was just fine.Once ordered, the food comes out fairly quickly. The service is quite accommodating if you are uncomfortable as was our case sitting underneath direct sun during brunch. They brought over an extra umbrella to give us shade, which I greatly appreciated and made brunch significantly more enjoyable.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite restaurant in DC.
It is located in the heart of Adams Morgan. They have a huge space (outdoor, indoor, basement, etc). We came at lunch and the service was fast and friendly. If you want to come around dinner time, make your reservation a week in advance! The server gave us recommendations for what to order. We order a variety of dishes and shared everything.

If there is one thing defines me, it is my love for the Afghan people and culture. I spent a lot of time in the country on multiple deployments, and I was recently a part of the Afghan Evacuation Mission. My affinity for Afghanistan and its people means that I need a partner who understands this, and who can enjoy this beautiful culture as much as I do. As such, I strategic have brought many first dates here, and I wanted to write an update because of how much I adore this place. Although it is not as metro-accessible as other restaurants in the area, that fact is not meant to be a ding on this establishment. In a city full of Ubers and Lyfts, one can hardly punish a restaurant for where it is located. What stands out with Lapis is that it has great outdoors seating, which is helpful for those who are still concerned about COVID. Even if you're not concerned about COVID, I still recommend outdoors seating because it can be quite noisy inside, which isn't ideal for conversations. If you haven't been here in a while, the owners have switched around the insides. The bar is no longer available for seating. But the strong and unique drinks are still plentiful. If you're not sure what to get, just ask one of the very helpful servers, who will point you in the right direction. As for the food, it remains some of the most authentic I have ever had and is certainly better an option than the average cuisines in the area. I definitely recommend the kabuli palow, which comes with fluffy rice and tender meats. The meatballs are also moist and nicely spiced. The last time I was there with a friend, out-of-town visitors next to us asked me for recommendations, and they were extremely happy with both dishes. But don't settle on one or two dishes, order something different each time you come here to experience the full depth and breadth of what Afghan cuisine has to offer. I've not had a bad experience there yet, and I trust you won't, either.

As a big fan of Afghan food, I was extremely excited to come and try Lapis. My friends and I stopped by around 5:45pm on a Saturday with an outdoor reservation. There was a huge chance of rain that day and they asked if we would like to be seated inside so I was very grateful we were able to snag an indoor table. We stared with drinks--my friend ordered the sheer chai and I ordered the rumi mocktail. The sheer chai was excellent--there was a strong flavor of cardamom which we all loved. The rumi was more of a savory drink--the ingredients looked like a recipe for tzaziki sauce and it's honestly what it tasted like. It was savory and yogurty, which was fine, but also a little too watery for my vibe.As for food, we ordered the aushak and mantoo shrimp dumplings, the qabuli palow, the buranee bademjan, and side of the lamb kabobs. Afghan dumplings are always by far what I look forward to most on a menu and the shrimp mantoo lived up. There was a rich and creamy turmeric sauce that paired perfectly with the shrimp. The aushak was also pretty good and is a really great option for people who have never had Afghan food before. Although, I enjoyed the aushak, I've had better once in the DC area. As for the other entree dishes, the qabuli palow was very good. Perfectly savory and perfectly sweet with tender bites of the lamb. The buranee bademjan was also excellent--this was more of a half sized entree, but this is one of my favorite afghan dishes to order when I'm not eating meat. Lastly, the lamb kabobs were pretty good--I particularly loved the spicy red sauce that they came with. I wish they were a little more tender and fatty, but overall, they weren't too gamey and were well seasoned. As for our service, this was very disappointing. Our server did not frequent our table for water refills. He also began walking away before we finished giving him our order--since he had assumed we were done ordering. Typically, I've had waiters at least confirm the order before walking away or at least asking if that's everything. The other thing that really bother me was that my friend ordered an Aperol Spritz, and before saying anything else, the waiter asked if that was on the menu. Since it was not on the menu, he immediately said that it could not be made--despite that we could see the aperol behind the bar.Overall, the food was not as mind-blowing as I've had at other Afghan restaurants in the area and the service was quite disappointing. I do appreciate that Lapis was actively helping refugees, but that isn't enough to entice me to come back.

I ordered take-out this morning, I got there and they were having some trouble with their online server so I had to wait an extra 15 minutes, but the staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating! The restaurant itself was beautiful and the scenery and vibes made it no problem for me to sit and wait, plus they offered me a free drink for the trouble! (I got the chai, it was delish!) the beef mantoo and the pallow were incredible, beautifully spiced, and delicious!! Totally worth the wait, and totally deserving of 5 stars! Great food, great atmosphere, great staff! :)
Be the first to ReplyFood, drinks, and service are always great.
Don't think that I could pick a favorite. The last couple times we ordered the combo platter, which was really good and definitely a better deal than trying to order everything a la carte.
Be the first to Replyoverpriced food that is mediocre and service was not great.
waiter forgot about our table for 30 minutes, did not bring silverware or water for a while also.

I have been wanting to try Lapis FOREVER! It's so hard to get a reservation, but by a stroke of luck I was able to walk up today and be seated! Wow! The food was amazing. Deliciously sesobed food with wonderful service means that I hope to return again soon!!!

Great vegan/vegetarian options, subtle seasonings, healthy menu.
Be the first to ReplyI came to Lapis for brunch with friends who had been for
I came to Lapis for brunch with friends who had been for dinner and loved it. After our brunch, their ruling was that in the future they'd rather come back for dinner, simply because of how awesome Lapis's dinner is, but I was pretty pleased with the brunch! I am generally a brunch hater--I hate waiting in line, I hate paying tons of money for items I could make for myself at home for like three dollars. Lapis brunch poses neither of these problems. You can make a reservation! Their menu items are unique! If you hate brunch, and you have to go to brunch, go to brunch at Lapis. The brunch menu is not huge. They have some standards (a croissant! a scramble!) and some more unique things. We each got a drink and then ordered three items to share amongst ourselves. I had the triple citrus, which shockingly is the only time I've seen a hot citrus drink on a menu. More people should be offering hot citrus! It's tart but the honey cuts the sourness, and it is exactly what I would want if I were feeling under the weather. It is comfort in a mug. My brunch buddies had the golden milk latte (love) and cuban coffee (solid). We shared the Kabul frittata, the rosewater pancakes, and the brunch bolani. All were delicious, and I'm so glad we shared so we could each taste them all. The standouts for me were the frittata, and the spicy chutney that came with the brunch bolani. I'm also usually a savory breakfast person but found the pancakes surprisingly pleasant. Not too sweet!Service is excellent. Vibes are excellent. Will definitely come back for dinner next time I'm in DC.
Be the first to ReplyMy friend had made a reservation at this place for brunch.
We had to move our reservation an hour later which they accommodated but when we got there it was a long wait. We were not seated until 10-15 minutes before the kitchen closed for dinner prep. We were offered a table in the basement away from the main dining area. We had said yes originally to the table because the kitchen was closing so soon but realized that sitting in the basement really took away from the dining experience. Food was pretty good but the seating arrangement really took away from the experience. The service was fine. The decor was beautiful.
Be the first to ReplyOur experience today was not what we had hoped for.
The food was average at best. The qorma wasn't bad, but I thought charging $5 for pre made bread sticks that they describe as "naan" was highway robbery. Similarly, when we ordered the sheer yakh ("Afghan" vanilla ice cream) tasted remarkably similar to store bought ice cream in a shallow layer of dilute rose water. The tables were cramped and you're on an hour long time limit for you meals. Unless there are drastic changes in the quality of the food and service, Im not going back anytime soon.

We had a 5 PM reservation and were promptly allowed into the store at 5:15. The shrimp manti had an interesting sauce, but too much salt for my taste. The buranee kadoo was well-made but certainly not outstanding relative to other Afghani restaurants where I have eaten. Similarly, the chicken korma was average to slightly above average, but by no means outstanding in terms of taste or presentation. We ordered naan, Which I understood to be an on love and bread baked fresh in a clay oven, but clearly there had been a misunderstanding, because we received what appeared to be lukewarm breadsticks instead. The meal concluded with " Rosewater ice cream." I expected rose and cardamom flavored ice cream as is typically served and Afghani and Iranian restaurants. Instead, we received a scoop of vanilla ice cream of uncertain provenance in a shallow bowl of watery rosewater with a few pistachios as a garnish.
