Langbaan Portland Reviews from The Last Year

Welp, I was expecting more for "the best restaurant in America." LOVED the starters (shrimp, scallop, mussel) Went down hill after that. And the food came out SOOO painfully slowly (45 min between courses). The entree was 2 shrimp and 2 thin, small slices of Thai pork. We ended with a beautiful dessert, but did not feel that meal was worth $125.
An unbelievable experience with superb food and excellent
An unbelievable experience with superb food and excellent service. And... we enjoyed many dishes that celebrated their 10 years as well as their well deserved James Beard award for Best Restaurant of the Year.

Would get a 5 stars but automatically adding 20% gratuity then asking for more says they don't trust the diners. I never add extra money when there is an autograt. Otherwise 30% is my standard... I think autograts are RUDE.
Amazing combination of flavors.
A visual and gastronomic delight. Prix fixe menu of 12 items with multiple appetizers to desserts.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating! They were well versed with painting the story of their menu and wine pairings. The ambiance was dimly lit with a nice intimate feel. The food was absolutely incredible! The amount of flavor put together was simply amazing! We came during their 10 year anniversary and their tasting menu was their greatest hits over that span. Every single dish that came was beautifully presented and the taste to match. I would 1000% come back to this place and couldn't recommend it enough to others!

I went to Phuket Cafe and which is the outside area in front of Langbaan with my teenage daughter on Saturday, April 13 around 6 PM. I know they would be busy but thought we'd try anyway. We saw some open tables outside so I thought we'd go inside to ask if there was any opening. I smiled at the hostess to say hi but before I could even opened my mouth, I am dead serious here, she rolled her eyes at us. I tried to ignore that and politely asked if there happened to be any open table. She said that the first opening would be at 9PM. I just wanted to make sure that she knew I talked about the outside tables for Phuket Cafe, and she lost patience with us even more (she didn't have any to begin with). She was very short with us. We were quite shocked and weren't sure what was going on and decided to leave. The first thing my poor daughter asked me once we stepped outside was, "Mom, why did that lady talk to us like that?" I told her I had no idea. I was polite the whole time. We ended up walking across the street to eat at Pixiu Mala Hongtang. Sure it wasn't as fancy but the food was good and everyone in there was nice to us which saved us from the evening that Langbaan's hostess almost ruined.
Langbaan 3.
5 stars A special tasting menu at select times inside Phucket Cafe. Inspired by Issan Let me start by saying everything on the menu was good but the main dishes didn't really agree with my palate so for the price I'll take Phucket Cafe. The appetizers and desserts I would fight a pack of wild Yorkies for on a daily basis! Service, atmosphere and portions were perfect. Kanom Krock (scallops in lemongrass coconut cream) is something I've never experienced but wish I could every day of my life. Simply amazing Rice Khao Lam (sticky rice pudding with strawberries) was the perfect blend of savory and sweet and added a refreshing end to a perfectly portioned meal. Also they were so accommodating for food allergies (you HAVE to let them know a few days in advance) Overall (and a half) Service Atmosphere @langbaanpdx #travelportland #pdxeater #pdx #portland #restauranteurexplorators #eats #pdxfoodbloggers #portlandoregon
Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly
Langban was pretty good and the service was very friendly and down to earth. Me and my partner did the tasting menu and I thought that Kanom Krok with the scallops was easily the best dish of the night. It was so flavorful and creamy that I regretted that I finished the bite so fast. I think that the appetizers were the star of the menu and that all the other dishes were quite forgettable. Not bad, but not phenomenal as I didn't really feel that there were any particular stand outs. For the final main dish, there was a curry for "family style" but while it was nicely presented, I just didn't think there was anything special or out of the ordinary for something that commanded the price of a tasting menu. It was also a bit too spicy for my own palette. Regardless, it was a fun experience and might be worth it if you are a fan of Thai food in a slightly elevated context.

Well I've waited a long time to finally eat at Langbaan and it definitely lived up to the hype. The food was fabulous, they change the menu every couple months but you can read about it online at their website. It was too complicated for me to remember the names of what I ate, but each dish was better than the last. First time I've eaten octopus and it was wonderful. There wasn't a single mediocre plate. The servers were also great, took their time to explain every dish fully and they're wine selection for me was great. I'm also very impressed that during our terrible ice storm last week they cooked meals for the homeless rather than throw away the food they couldn't use since no one could get in to eat.
It's no wonder they just got a James Beard nomination.
The space, service, and food were top notch! From the first course to the last, every bite was a party in your mouth. If I had to choose a favorite it would, without question, be the lamb belly curry! O. M. G. Melt in your mouth. They also run two restaurants out of the same space on weekends and they were so on top of everything, you would never know. Cannot wait to visit their sister restaurant Phuket Kitchen.
Langbaan: Blown away by this experience and the omakase,
Langbaan: Blown away by this experience and the omakase, attention and care put together by this team. Entering Langbaan is like journeying to a traditional Thai home. The dimly lit greens and wood beams provide an intimate setting for your meal experience. The staff is attentive and wonderful; they take care to explain the menu and enjoy the experience. Each course is inspired by Thai cuisine and local ingredients. You will have a hard time deciding which standout plate tops them all. Thai food to me is very flavorful: coconut milk, nuts, spices. I particularly enjoyed the "Jook" - an amazing multi-textured, multi-flavored dish using octopus and pomegranate. It was an experience I'd never tasted before. It's not strictly Thai, but honors the innovation and palette of Thai culture. It's a sensory feast. Langbaan is a can't miss, if you're in Portland and want to taste something unique, but familiar- and yet, distinctly Portland. Food: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Experience: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Good for: Fancy dinner. Celebrating. Authenticity: 4/5 Recommends: Giving yourself over to the experience. Notes:
I was not a fan, at all.
I will add the caveat of, when it comes to Thai food, I'm no expert, but my favorite dishes are larb, and pad kee mao. I am really not fond of foods that are both sweet and savory, peanut used in a savory context, sesame, fish sauce, and lemongrass. So, don't let this dissuade you if you like these things. Besides the fact that the menu nearly entirely featured flavor profiles that I dislike, almost everything was super gelatinous and goopy, with no textural variation. The Kanom Krak, which they claimed was a beloved dish amongst their customers, was a mucosal catastrophe. Perhaps I am a philistine for my inability to enjoy homogeneous and slimy foods, but I found myself leaving both nauseous and ravenous. The only thing I actually liked was the yum mama neua yang (the wagyu flank steak salad) One of my dining companions, who enjoys Thai food as a whole, also noted that the textures were too gloopy. The service was weird and kind of punk, for lack of a better term. The better the food is at a restaurant, the less I factor in service. If they are serving me the best food I've ever had in my life, I don't care if they spit on me or kick me or something. But, the less impressive the food is, the more noticeable bad service becomes. And the food was not good enough for the service to be that weird and punk.
Food was more on the spicy side even if they tell you
Food was more on the spicy side even if they tell you upfront it's NOT spicy at all. For the price, I'd rather have some of the appetizers as the main meal rather than the whole 12? Course meal. Halfway thru the meal I stopped eating because it was way too spicy for me. I got so full drinking water. The service was great and quick. The little plates were plenty and they were cleared accordingly. The narrative of each meal was perfect but if it's not going to agree with one's tastebuds then only the ears got satisfied. It was incredibly dark inside too so you could barely appreciate the presentation. Sorry NOT for me.
Very original.
The flavor combinations were outstanding especially with the sole main dinner and sides. I'm taking one star away. I know it's cliche to say fancy restaurants have small portions, but it's really true here. If you have a big appetite, don't expect to leave full. The last two items were a ginger ice cream that was about one tablespoon worth and a coconut flan that was about 1.5"x1.5". Why is dessert a one biter? Give me more. Especially for $125.
Christmas shopping with Katie in PDX for the day.
We have spent time in Thailand, dear reader, so it's fair to say that we know authentic when we taste it. Langbaan promotes, "Thai-style dining experience inspired by century-old traditions." Promotes, okay, but certainly does not deliver. *Reservations are not easy to get, and it's all hype, we assure you *Parking is impossible in this part of DT Portland *Venue looks like a summer camp mess hall *Bathrooms look like a demilitarized zone *Our server didn't have any when we asked for menu suggestions *Our server kept bringing us food that other patrons/tables had ordered *The Miang Soup was served with a human fingernail in it *The Nahm Tok was served on an obviously cracked and broken plate *When we asked for our coats the staff could not find them (WTF?!) *When we left no tip, a manager followed us to our car for a 20% gratuity If you have never been to Thailand please don't use this restaurant as a measuring stick for authentic food. A Thai frozen dinner from 7-11 would top this place any day of the week. Since we didn't eat much, we're stopping off at a local taco truck before heading back to the Cessna. Portland, you're getting worse and worse.
Came here for a special occasion.
It is a fixed menu. And no modifications and 20% gratuity is added. We arrived right at 8:30pm, we got seated right away at the bar. We did have 2 different servers help and they were both great! Very knowledgeable about each item in the menu and the ingredients. The ambiance was very chill and casual. It was a bit dark and really hard to read the menu ingredients (luckily we had a small light at the bar). It wasn't highly decorated but a great mood overall. Food tasted good with a few hits and misses but we tried some things that we never tried before. Definitely come with people who have been to tasting menus before and won't complain about the price!

We went for the pre-fixed 11 small course tasting menu for $125 per person that they do twice nightly. While the food was quite excellent, although highly likely geared towards the non Asian patron, the space is not at all romantic. The three 2-top tables are very close together so that your servers bumm is right against your table when they are serving the table next to you, and all of those tables face the two bars that seat patrons for walk ins for their sister restaurant Phuket Cafe. High foot traffic. We went for a special occasion but received no acknowledgment or any thoughtful seating because of that. It felt rushed (because they were trying to get through 11 courses quickly). And the wine paring price (additional cost) was not disclosed upfront so when the bill came and it was twice the amount of the tasting menu, it was a bit of a shock. There was a added 2 oysters (delicious) for $8 or $10 and an added sliced wagu beef that was a 3 tiny slices (.075 oz) for $40. After $500, I went home still hungry and made myself a 3 egg omelet with a crab cake. I guess I felt like it wasn't worth the price. Tasted great and staff was knowledgable and efficient. But overall, Im not rich and I probably won't go there again unfortunately.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
