La Vie Washington Reviews from The Last Year
CE N'EST PAS LA VIE ("This is not life")
Despite the panoramic views of the Potomac River high atop the restaurant, La Vie was an expensive and utter disappointment. We were a party of four squeezed into one of the seemingly acrylic bubbles dining on a wannabe coffee table. This is place at best for drinks, but don't order the Gentlemen's cube unless you want to pay an extra $2.50 in addition to the drink itself. This was an insult given the per person minimum that had to be met. The food was ok but definitely had better. As a result, have to say this will be a ONE TIME VISIT!
La Vie Reservations Not Honored: Space and Menu Can Be Sold to a Higher Bidder!!!
As one who enjoys fine dining and is particular about exceptional customer service, I’ve always valued transparency and fairness, both in my reviews and from the establishments I choose to patronize. It is with great regret that I must recount a recent experience with La Vie Restaurant, an establishment I once held in high regard, that has compelled me to share a less than favorable review. Three weeks ago, I made a reservation for four to celebrate my wife's birthday, a decision influenced by the some of the positive critiques and recommendations La Vie has received. This was not just a dinner; it was a celebration of a momentous day, chosen with trust and high expectations placed on La Vie based on its reputed location, ambience, and culinary excellence. Imagine our dismay when, barely 24 hours before our scheduled celebration, I received a text from a La Vie manager stating our reservation was to be altered significantly. The reason? Accommodating a larger, presumably more profitable, group. Our option: relocate to an upstairs area with a “limited menu,” a far cry from the experience we were promised and anticipated. This eleventh-hour notification did not just disrupt a carefully planned event; it blatantly disregarded the reservation we made with La Vie, and more importantly, the commitment La Vie supposedly had to us. The decision to prioritize a last-minute larger party over a reservation made weeks in advance not only undermines the integrity of your reservation system but also displays a clear lack of respect for your patrons. Being left to scramble for alternatives a day before a significant celebration was not only inconvenient but distressing. This incident reflects poorly on La Vie’s management and its purported values. A restaurant’s reputation should stand on respect for its customers as much as it does on culinary excellence. Unfortunately, this experience has marred our perception of La Vie, revealing a disregard for individual patrons and a failure to uphold basic hospitality ethics. In sharing this review, I hope to illuminate not just our disappointment but the importance of valuing each patron’s experience. It’s a harsh reminder that no matter the accolades, the true measure of a restaurant’s quality is reflected in its respect and treatment of its customers. La Vie Management team, you must do better by your patrons! I for one, will not entrust you to any future events as you’ve demonstrated that La Vie “reservations” can be sold to a higher bidder!

La Vie has become a go-to destination for both drinks and group dinners, and for good reason. Whether you're stopping by for cocktails or enjoying a meal with friends, La Vie consistently delivers an exceptional experience. The food is fantastic, the drinks are top-notch, and the ambiance is simply unparalleled. With its stunning waterfront views and vibrant atmosphere, La Vie sets the stage for unforgettable dining experiences. If you're looking for a place that excels in every aspect, look no further than La Vie. The service is solid as well.
Ambiance: 5 Stars exceeds expectations.
Window seats are great in the winter. In the summer, I'd be scared to be by them. Food: Overall the food is good for the price. The steak was a bit chewy but I suppose it's the meat they use. I wish they'd offer an upgrade to a filet. I'd pay. Banana Pancakes tasted like alcohol, would have preferred it without that flavor. Mac and cheese was okay, needed more flavor. Salt and Pepper, maybe a sprinkle of a southern ancestor touch. Chicken and waffle was below average. They use dark meat and it was dry. They should def consider the typical breast. This was my least favorite. The price is average for the Wharf. There is an up charge to cover costs for tip, and other explained items so expect to pay at minimum $100 for one person. We were a table of two and the bill came out to $240 The table was not ready when I got there even with a reservation but they were extremely busy. Overall, it was fun and an excellent experience. Will definitely be back!

I really love coming to this restaurant however, today just wasn't it. I went to brunch earlier this afternoon and it was packed. Luckily, we got seated right away. We chose the "ALL YOU CARE TO ENJOY SMALL PLATES" which was $65 each. This does not include drinks. Unfortunately, brunch was very mediocre especially for the amount we're paying. It seems like we're just paying for the aesthetics. Our server was okay but why try hard when there's already gratuity included on the bill. I really love this establishment and don't really know what's happening it's just not the same anymore. I noticed 10 minutes before brunch ends our server starts wandering around so we don't put in another order. This has happened to me twice and it's becoming a pattern. Not sure if they are being told to do so. I'll give this restaurant another chance and see.
The manager was so rude and wouldn't seat us.
We left and went to ilili next door and had an amazing experience. Some of my party stayed said the food and service was mediocre.

I went to La Vie for my girlfriend's birthday last week and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The view from our table was really nice, with a stunning panoramic of the city skyline that added to the ambiance of the evening. As for the food, I would say it was just okay. The menu offered a decent selection of dishes, but nothing particularly stood out as extraordinary. We both ordered different entrees and while they were tasty enough, they didn't necessarily blow us away. However, the service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy and intimate which made it a great spot for a special occasion like a birthday celebration. Overall, I would recommend La Vie for its lovely views and casual dining experience.

This was my second time patronizing La Vie and so far they are two for two. The first time I went was during Covid in the igloos. Both times the food and drinks were good and the customer service makes you feel like family. I felt like each time the servers were personable however they hold the level of respect to not cross any inappropriate lines. This particular time we visited in March of 2023 for my mothers birthday. Everyone, of our party of 4, ordered an entree and the table had at least 2 appetizers. We did not have any complaints. The atmosphere was comfortable and spaced out and had a beautiful view of the wharf. I feel that this establish gets negative feedback for the price but in the end you get what you pay for. They provide an immaculate service and experience.
Really great experience for us visiting DC.
Loved the location, the ambiance, the service. We went for the Saturday brunch special and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely will be going back.
Food: There were plenty of options for vegetarians.
I came here for brunch on a Sunday with a party of 7. We got everything from the brunch menu. Our server brought out everything we wanted to order broken down by portions for 7 people. Favorites: Out of everything we tried, I enjoyed the arancini, caesar salad, black truffle mac & cheese, potato & pepper hash, banana pancake, tiramisu french toast, and dark chocolate mousse parfait. The black truffle mac & cheese was a bit bland in terms of spice for my South Asian taste buds, but otherwise flavorful. Ambiance: I loved the open layout and the glass walls that allowed in natural light with the ability to also marvel at the outside view. The decor was elegant and the tables were comfortably spread out to allow for privacy. Service: All the staff including the front desk, management, and servers were extremely professional and friendly. Less than half of our party had arrived for our reservation time, and the front desk staff were so gracious to hold our reservation and table for up to 25 minutes until the rest of our party arrived. Price: Considering the beautiful waterfront location at the Wharf in DC, variety/quality of the bottomless brunch options, and upscale nature of the restaurant, the price was fair, but not budget friendly.

If you want to impress a first date, impress your mate, or celebrate a birthday, it's La Vie! The food is fresh and seasoned to highlight the natural flavors.

Everything was very good! Parking was a pain but that is not their fault. We waited for our friends (they require 3/4 of the party to be there to be seated) and were seated promptly once they arrived. Service is friendly and helpful. Food was great but... really it was not worth the price. It is just not that level of food. No regrets. A fun night. Probably won't go back.
Gratifying dining experience filled with extraordinary ambiance
My wife and I were first time patrons at La VIe to celebrate my birthday brunch on Christmas day and weren't disappointed. To set the mood, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of waterfront DC from a penthouse igloo. Our server, Denise, was knowledgeable, warm and very attentive to our requests. The food and drinks were delightful! We've already planned our return in the coming weeks. Kevin & Dawn C.
Rip off
Not worth it at all. Too pricey. Be aware of %2 and %20 of surcharges. I don’t mind paying this much if the service was good. Food wasn’t any special. Like breakfast type. Paying $400 for 3 ppl for breakfast type food not worth it. Non alcoholic drink was $12 each. They validated our parking ticket. We said at-least we don’t have to pay $23 parking fee. When we got to the gate they told us. We have nothing to do with parking. This is private parking. I wouldn’t recommend. Rip off
Way over priced/Ok food
We went to La Vie for my wife’s birthday brunch. The menu indicated an extra 24% will be added for service charge and “surcharges” to your final bill (very disappointing). We saw the waiter 4 time total. We actually waited for about 20 minutes before we were able to place our last order of food. Food was ok, nothing truly special. Drinks are very over priced as well. I’d say, you can certainly go to elsewhere for a bottomless brunch for better quality food and much more reasonable prices. The icing on the cake was that they told us that the parking ticket could be validated (and was validated through a machine) however, when leaving, we were told that the validation is not valid since “colonial parking” doesn’t have any agreements with any of the restaurants. I would not go back here. Giving it two stars for the view…
Skip it!
Mediocre food, pricey and painfully noisy. There was a 4% surcharge which we found outrageous. The surcharge is probably a cash cow. A 20% percent tip was automatically charged and not appreciated. We will not return.
Amazing place! Worth the visit, great location
What a lovely place, by the wharf, by the river. The food was lovely, hot, fresh, tasted delicious! The pancakes were everything!!😍😍
Highlight was Natalie - thank you!
Natalie was wonderful - she recommended all the best dishes (gnocchi, caesar salad, purple cocktail) and was responsive & friendly. Kudos! She was truly the highlight of the evening. The unexpected 4% surcharge left a sour taste in my mouth, which is regrettable, because I would have definitely come back. I have no qualms about the 20% mandatory service charge, and certainly the service was exceptional, but the rest of the bill made me feel shaken down.
DC Wharf
The ambiance of this restaurant was very nice, but in my opinion, the food and drinks were average. I didn't feel that the food and drinks were worth their cost. Worth the experience and to check it off my list, but I wouldn't say that I need to experience it again.
Outstanding Meal, Service amd Atmosphere
First time at this restaurant and we are so glad that we kept our reservation. We were running late and thought they would not be able to seat us. So glad we took a chance.
Good Food and Good Service, but Way Too Pricey
Having just arrived in D.C., we chose La Vie on short notice based on the good reviews it had for nearby restaurants and for a price range shown of $$-$$$. I certainly wish we had read the other reviews first, because although the food and service was quite good, it wasn’t worth the inflated prices or 20% gratuity (plus 4% surcharge for whatever) that ran our bill up to $200 for a family of three. No appetizers, no drinks (besides one beer), no sides, and no dessert - only entrees and a nice view of the Potomac. All this to say, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t.
Delicious Food - Very Pricey with other caveats
I have to divide this review into 2 parts the food and the business side of the restaurant. From a straight food perspective, this restaurant was very good. Our server was also excellent. The atmosphere and vibe were great and the food came out in a timely fashion. We had the Lamb Shawarma Hummus - Great, Highly Recommended. My wife had the market fish with vegetables also very good I had Seafood Tagliatelle which had a good amount of seafood and was very tasty. Even though it was in a cream sauce, it didn't feel heavy Food wise - a must to try. Special Occasions - Great Choice The business. Food is VERY pricey and would say overpriced. Drinks other than beer will run you about $23.00+ on average. Glass of wine is about $20.00 per glass. The wine was good. Reservations require a credit card, which is not an issue, but it was not noted when I booked it. I got an email the next day that I needed to supply a credit card. Note: I booked my reservation of Opentable but seven seas booking does require a credit card. Cancellation Policy You must cancel within 48 hrs beforehand or get charged $19.00 per person Mon-Thurs or $39.00 other days for late cancel or no shows. Next time I will try and make my reservation the day before when I am sure I am going. A 20% gratuity, and 4% surcharge are automatically added to your bill. Love the restaurant vibe and food but not sure I will go back
