Great Tuscan Food at great prices
This wonderful restaurant in Siena is a step back in history with incredibly old surroundings and a cellar that dates to BC days. This is one of my favorite lasagnas anywhere. The service is good, the food good and one can get in and out in a hurry to not miss any of the beauty of Siena.

Six years after the last visit, two Canadians had the very good fortune of obtaining a table at this fine restaurant. The food: a sparkling menu, a broad variety of dishes, and each item cooked to perfection. The people: wonderful. Excellent wines and a beautiful setting also. (Reservations definitely recommended.)

A lovely break from touring. The food was fresh and creative and the staff were friendly. I ordered the cheese soufflé which was as light as clouds. Superb. The chicken liver pate was substantial, well seasoned, and more like a mousse. A perfect lunch.

Amazing food, wines and even more amazing people. Went for every meal I could while in Siena 🤗 you’ll want to too. Great vibes 🙌
Be the first to ReplyDinner was extraordinary and the service was impeccable!
Traveling all of Italy and this was the best meal by far! Even if you’re not super hungry be sure to order each course so you can enjoy everything they offer. The service was impeccable! The location is very cool because you can see the old aqueduct/cave. We would eat dinner here every night if we could!

Wonderful meal with the family. Very popular with Americans and very busy. Lovely atmosphere of ancient brick cellar. Crostone with pear, lardo and Gorgonzola was simply divine. Husband and kids loved the steak. Extensive wine selection from all over Italy, multiple price points. Very good service. Pear poached in wine was a lovely dessert.

Our fantastic receptionist at Hotel Athena was able to secure a table for 3 in short notice for the first service at La Taverna di San Giuseppe. The service was exceptional and welcoming from the start and the food was worthy of their Michelin stars. If you are in Siena and do not eat here, you should be thrown over the wall!

We’ve visited this place just after opening for lunch. We’re lucky to get a table without a reservation. We’ve ordered some starters and pasta. Everything was delicious and service was excellent. I would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent bistecca fiorentina, we missed Antinori wines
We were invited by our business partner. Food was very good, especially bistecca fiorentina. Warm and cosy place. Only thing we missed is Antinori wine. I hope they will have it next time, when we come back.

One of the best meals we had in a 2 1/2 trip through Tuscany and easily the best and warmest service we have received at a restaurant. So many great small touches but one that really stood out was giving us glasses of prosecco while our wine decanted so that we could fully enjoy it. Highly recommend the chocolate pasta with wild boar. The dish really blew our minds and was not all what we were expecting. We loved dinner here so much that we came back for lunch again a day later.

We read reviews from websites that said this restaurant was a “can’t miss” in Siena, and reservations were strongly recommended, and only by phone. Due to time difference and my work schedule, I tried to book dinner for 2 by email about a month in advance. Fortunately, Lorella was able to make that booking via email a reality and we were looking forward to the meal ever since. Let’s just say it DID NOT disappoint!! Upon entering the restaurant and giving our name, Lorella greeted us warmly and enthusiastically, knowing exactly who we were due to our emails back and forth. The entire staff were extremely pleasant and friendly, and my lack of Italian was not an issue as our servers spoke English. We were seated in a cozy back corner and quickly provided with complimentary bowls of hot potato soup, the perfect thing to warm us up after the chilly night’s walk from our hotel. We had an eggplant appetizer with ham, cheese, and mushrooms that was absolutely delicious! I’m not a big fan of eggplant, but I would eat this dish anytime. Kudos to my wife for selecting it as our starter. She also selected our next course, lasagna with pork and beef in a béchamel sauce that was the best piece of lasagna I’ve ever had. The pasta was so light and fluffy, it allowed the flavors of the rest of the ingredients to stand out. For our mains, my wife had the grilled chicken and I had the beef filet with mushrooms. Again, two absolute winners on the menu. We each had a glass of wine with our meal, and felt fully satisfied by the end. Then we were offered dessert … Two words. Crème brûlée. Delightfully tasty, we made short work with two spoons to the end of this wonderful meal. We agreed it was the best dinner we’ve had since arriving in Italy 4 days ago, and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the restaurant to anyone traveling to or near Siena.
Be the first to ReplyMagnificent - the building, the staff, and the food.
Even the smell radiating onto the street is exquisite - I loved this place before I walked through the door. The staff know and clearly love what they do, with a passion for food and drink that manages to be both stylish and approachable. The triangoli appetiser and the cannelloni first dish were our high points (the cannelloni is outrageously, almost offensively good), but the service was also immaculate - kind, funny, efficient and interesting in equal parts. Thank you for making my birthday so memorable!

I truly recommend this as a must visit if you are in Siena. Beautiful osteria- traditionally Italian and tuscan food. All freshly prepared and very delicious with wine to match 😋 The staff speak very good English, and respectively attentive. The tiramisu was sensational!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, unique experience
Best food we had in all of Tuscany. The menu has so many unique dishes. We shared a crema di patate as a starter and I've never tasted anything like it before. The mains were equally tasty. The atmosphere is perfect, there are loads of nice little touches (special mention to the small chairs to put purses on). A fantastic experience.
Be the first to ReplyThe best Siena dining experience, with above and beyond service!
La Taverna di San Giuseppe (Attach pictures) This was the best and most memorable dinner I've ever had anywhere in the world. We were a group of Americans and Australians visiting Siena via train (this is an important detail for later) for the day from Florence with a group of 14 people (12 adults, 1 toddler, and 1 infant) August 1, 2022. We found La Taverna di San Giuseppe via the Michelin Guide and about 6 weeks prior to our arrival, contacted the restaurant to make a reservation. Luckily August 1st was the restaurant's first day back from a July holiday closure. Be aware of this if you are traveling in the summer. Honestly, I would arrange your vacation schedule around this restaurant's availability - it really is that spectacular. After calling the restaurant for a large reservation, the person on the phone recommended emailing the manager. After a quick email exchange in English, Lorella (the most wonderful and accommodating manager you'll ever meet) was able to fit our group at a table of 6 and 8 for a 7:00 pm reservation. Recommendation: Call more than 6 weeks in advance especially if you have a large group and do not want to be split up. Within our email exchange, I mentioned three important details: 1. We were celebrating an engagement, 2. We had to catch the 9:40 train back to Florence, 3. Some members of our group had allergies. If you are new to Italy, dinner may take a while so be sure to inform the staff if you need to leave by a certain time. Lorella said that because of our group's size, we had to select from 1 of two degustation menus. We selected menu #1 which consisted of wine, appetizers, pasta, meat, dessert, and coffee. The afternoon of our dinner, Lorella emailed me to confirm that we were still arriving. At that time we informed her that our list of allergies had to be updated and she was happy to accommodate different people's nut, gluten, dairy allergies. She also created a meal for the toddler that was separate from the degustation menu. Upon our arrival at 7:00, we were greeted by friendly wait staff as well as Lorella. I felt as though I had already known her because we had exchanged almost 20 emails about this dinner. She pulled me aside and asked who the engaged couple was and said there would be a surprise at dessert. I had expected the Olive Garden (American chain restaurant) birthday song equivalent - oh no, that was not at all what we received. She also asked if we were still taking the 9:40 train. I asked if taxis were easily attainable at that time of night and in this vicinity. Since taxis were not typically driving in the area, Lorella said that she would call the taxi company for us and arrange for 3 taxis to pickup and take us to the train station around 10 mins before a 9:00 pickup. Now the food. Every item was excellent. Served by multiple wait staff, our wine glasses were never empty, our courses were perfectly timed. The presentation was photogenic. The taste was impeccable. Every element of the food was better than the previous item. The portion sizes were appropriate and the dessert was a large slice of melt in your mouth chocolate cake. Right before dessert, we tried to buy Siena to Florence train tickets online and discovered no tickets were available. Would we be sleeping in a park for the night? Lorella to the rescue. But first, the engagement celebration. The dining atmosphere was in a style of typical Italian restaurant ambiance, but inside a 3rd century BC Etruscan cave. The restaurant was well air-conditioned, which was a much needed respite from the summer heat wave. Then suddenly, all of the main lights went out, disco lights flashed to the beat of Italian house music, and we were transformed into a modern nightclub. Wait staff came out clapping, the entire restaurant joined in the clapping, and the newly engaged couple was presented with a special candlelit cake. This was above and beyond all expectations of any surprise celebration. Back to the taxi/train issue, we now had to ask Lorella to call the taxi company again and see if they could have 3 taxis drive us back to Florence (60 mins car ride as opposed to the 10 minute local car ride). Having Lorella speaking Italian to the taxi company, as opposed to us trying to explain the situation in English to the taxi company, was a blessing. Lorella arranged for taxis at a flat rate of 150 Euros each, which we gladly took considering the alternative. Side note: train riders, save yourself some money and panic by purchasing your return train ticket in advance! Finally, the dining experience was incredibly affordable at 120 Euros per adult. Even though Italian culture does not expect tipping, we tipped the wait staff and Lorella well to compensate for their exceptional food, ambiance, engagement surprise, taxi concierge service, and service/hospitality. Although we did not want to leave, our taxis had arrived, and before we headed back to Florence Lorella gifted us two bottles of wine. It was like saying goodbye to family after a holiday. We all hope to return to Siena one day and experience La Taverna di San Giuseppe once again. We will be telling all of our friends to make a point to dine at this fabulous restaurant. Thank you to the entire restaurant staff for the incredible lifelong memories!

It certainly deserves each Michelin indication. Besides having such an exceptional cuisine, it was quite an experience. Visiting the adega, an small ancient roman chapel, and pairing wine with delicious pecorino was an amazing surprise. Try the Brassato, paired with a Supertoscano! Our warmest thanks to Francesco, who took care of us and made this a night to be remembered!

Food was good, as was the service. Very nice atmosphere. We thought it was good value for the money. I think this place was a very nice balance between "fancy" and not too serious.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal I have had in Italy this trip!
This place was old school charm, from the exposed brick walls and ceiling to the wine and cheese cellar that is open to view. The staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and attentive. They gave us some amazing suggestions for both food and wine and it all exceeded our expectations. The souffle appetizer was a stand out amongst an amazing menu and the duck was phenomenal. The whole experience was a feast for the senses and the food at this restaurant reminded me why Italy is one of my favorite food destinations in the world.

AMAZING meal. Their truffle gnocchi was out of this world - probably some of the best pasta we’ve ever had. It’s definitely a spot for visitors and locals. They have a really impressive wine cellar, as well! Definitely worth a visit when in Siena. Try to call to get a reservation if possible
Be the first to ReplyGood mass market restaurant
We were excited to go despite the only time available for a reservation at 7pm. We arrived on time and were seated immediately. The restaurant is beautiful, staff is very friendly and attentive. Despite the food being good and prices reasonable, the general feeling was we felt rushed. For example before we could even sit down, we were served a sampling of pea soup. As we were taking our jackets off, the waiter was asking if we wanted water. We had antipasto and primo and we were done by 7.45. Perhaps because it's such a touristy town and popular place, they need to her super organized and fast. Perhaps they do 2 shifts of dinner? It has more of a 'mass market' feel vs Michelin guide.
Be the first to ReplyA great dinner with friends
We had a group dinner with friends here while travelling in Tuscany. The service was excellent, the food was really tasty, the environment very cozy and the staff super friendly. It was my brothers birthday that day and they even made a mini surprise to him by turning the lights off, putting on loud musing and brining a glass of champagne while singing to him. Leaving an excelllent review as they made our night!
Be the first to ReplySuperb Evening
We had the most memorable evening in la Taverna di San Giuseppe. The location is amazing, in the heart of Siena and in such a unique and beautiful building. The atmosphere is also incredible, very relaxed, the accent is on the food and enjoying the food! The food itself was absolutely magnificent and was matched by the wonderfully friendly service. We couldn't recommend La Taverna highly enough, it is an absolute gem and we hope to return one day!
