A great tempura resturant
Much more affordable than the ultra-famous 7 chome Kyoboshi in Tokyo, this small familiar restaurant (the chef is 7 chome's nephew) still guarantees a wonderful tempura experience. Lots of wonderful vegatables (lotus root, green beans, local green pepper to name only a few), fish and mussels (even abalon) of the highest quality. Tempura covering is perfect, dry, not oily, no oil smell in the (very very small) restaurant. My best tempura experience in Japan so far.

Masterful! Tempura at its purest and best. Every single serving done to perfection and served with pride. An dining experience that highlights a single style of cooking - nothing more and nothing less. Wonderful! (Difficult to find...but worth it!)

Must make reservation which we did through our hotel concierge. We were a party of 5 and though there were still available seats (maybe 3-4), 2 walk-in guests were turned. I suspect he only cooked for one party, or at least people in the same seating, at a time as the small restaurant was only serviced by our chef and his wife. Our dinner cost ยฅ13,200 (all-in) for about 18 courses; sake separately priced and the food was delicious - the batter light and food fresh. Chef was innovative too; it wasnโt just about simply coating the food in batter - for eg we had fish wrapped in shiso leaf, crab legs in avocado, fish wrapped in seaweed...yummy. The dips of lemon juice and home-made (such fine) salt was supplemented by grated daikon. Lovely and yet simple condiments. One of us did not take shellfish and was given a wide selection of fish instead. A must-go.
Be the first to ReplyBEST meal we had in Japan. Perfection
It does not get better than this. I made reservation with help of Tokyo friend and concierge. I have had many Michelin and 5 Star dinners, and I wondered how a tempura dinner would compare without all the other components, and I am happy to say it was incredible and amazing. I was full after the meal. I savored every moment.
I did not know Kyoto is known for tempura. My friend instructed me to eat very soon after chef serves me, so I did. I wanted to be respectful. I think I ate so fast that he sped ip our pace. Every single piece was delectable. Everything had a balanced and simple yet full flavor. It was an amazing meal. I am so glad we had a chance to eat here. The dry sake pairs wonderfully with the meal, and I recommend it.
tempura is dead
The way we have eaten tempura is dead. This place is unique. Perfect. The chef really enjoy cooking tempura and he exalts the food thru the most elegant tempura technique
Its a pleasure.
Perfect! (But read that to find it!)
First things first: hereโs some useful indications to go there (it definitely worth the efforts).
First ask you hotelโs concierge to make the reservation. The place is very small and I donโt think they allow people without reservation because the products are so fresh that they probably buy them each day.
When you want to get there TAKE CARE: THE PLACE INDICATED ON TRIPADVISOR IS WRONG (at least at the time Iโm writing this review). Take hanamikojidori NORTH from shijo gion. Turn second right (just after the Lawson konbini) and just after crossing a narrow alley, look on the left side for the blue curtain with ไบฌๆwritten on it on your left.
The place is very beautiful and the chef and his assistant are very kind: explaining everything in English and making you comfortable. The food is simply marvellous. The batter is wonderfully light, everything is perfectly cooked, fresh, inventive and delicious.
I canโt imagine going back to Kyoto without a reservation there.
Great tempura and shabu shabu
This place is absolutely flooded by tourists you have to come by 5:30 to get a seat! There are just bus loads of Chinese and there are long lines waiting at all restaurants! Really makes this dining experience a bad one no matter how good it is.
Be the first to ReplyTwo dozen culinary delights
When I think of tempura, large chunky pieces of vegetables or shrimp dipped in thick greasy batter come to mind. Perfectly fine with a big cold beer, but normally it is not what would consider sophisticated dining. Well, once one experiences the offerings at Kyoboshi, oneโs opinion of tempura will surely change forever.
Kyoboshi is operated by a two person team consisting of Chef Sakakibara Toshinori, a third generation master of culinary creations, and his lovely wife. The restaurant seats a maximum of ten guests at an L-shaped bar facing the cooking station. Sakakibara prepares individual pieces of tempura for each guest as part of a pre-set menu of 15 to 20 items, ranging from various vegetables such as local potato, ginger, asparagus and peppers, to various pieces of tender, delicious fish, and some unusual creations such as tempura fish sandwich, the latter being immensely creative and delicious. Larger pieces such as lotus root are sliced into bite size pieces in front of the guest to aid the dining experience. Lemon juice, house made slat and marinated daikon are provided to accentuate the flavors of the various items. So what is so special about Kyoboshi?
It really comes down to a combination of the ultrathin batter and the flavors of the secret frying oil, coupled with impeccable cooking technique. The essence and freshness of the ingredients are perfectly preserved inside the tempura casing, and there is not a hint of grease in the perfectly cooked pieces. Items are cooked individually and placed before the diner, with a suggestion of how to bring out additional flavor with the condiments that are provided. The chef manages to present the items in a delicate manner that in some cases is completely unexpected. Overall, the tasting experience is top notch and cannot be adequately described in words. It is not surprising that this establishment bears a Michelin star. To accompany the food, there is a nice selection of local sake, plus champagne, along with beer, wine and tea. Service is attentive, warm, and friendly.
The restaurant itself is not so easy to locate within the larger Gion area and a detailed street map is recommended. Moreover, given the small numbers of seats, a reservation is highly recommended.
In summary, I do not think I will ever be able to go back to standard North American tempura fare. My tempura palate has been changed for all eternity.
Beautiful
The food here was stunning. Wonderfully presented and prepared.
Relaxed but formal atmosphere and reasonably priced for Michelin dining.
I enjoyed every aspect of this restaurant.
We had to ask some locals how to find it however as it was down a small narrow street and we couldn't find it at all.
