Horrible service and food was bland for what you're paying for. Definitely overhyped.

LA is poppin' right now in regards to hot new restaurants springing up from the ground on just about every block, and one that should definitely be on your radar is @kinn.la, located in Koreatown (Los Angeles). Chef Ki Kim, previously of Jungsik and Atomix in New York City, and former chef of Naemo in Los Angeles, recently teamed up with the owners of Hanchic to open Kinn, an intimate 20-seat restaurant serving a low key five-course seasonal tasting menu meant to showcase familiar Korean dishes and flavors in reimagined formats. The tasting menu starts at $79 per person, which is one of the most cost-effective tasting menus in LA, with an option to add an octopus supplement for $21. In all reality, you don't want to miss the crispy octopus dish (it's soooooo good), so you can go ahead and assume your tasting will be $100 even. Still, definitely an amazing price for the excellent flavors, amazing service (the manager came from n/Naka so we were well taken care of) and overall great experience. Is Kinn worth the hype? Yes, most definitely.
Be the first to ReplyGood tasting menu.
Reasonable price and good service. Place is kind of small so make your reservation early

Came here based on a recommendation from a friend! I thought the food was quite tasty and a fun spin on some traditional Korean dishes. My favorite was the pork belly and the crispy octopus. Would recommend!

The ambience is a cute little place with only few selected tables to sit and with counter tops. We sat at the countertop, and started with a few glasses of wine. The selection is wine, sake, and I believe beer. Each course was delicious! Given it's LA and the provide for the tasting was $79 is awesome. We do not eat pork and they were able to accommodate us since we emailed them in advance. We added the octopus and it was one of the best octopuses we've had! The gochujang sauce was so good and paired really well with the octopus. Each dish was good in flavor. Though my bourbon tres leeches was too strong in flavor of the bourbon tasted like they poured a shot in my cake though that wasn't the case for my partner. So seemed to be inconsistent.

Best dish from here was the Bourbon Tres Leches--flavorful with a hint of bourbon with just enough sweetness and contrasted by the kumquat. Overall all the dishes fell short of expectations. They were either too one noted with not enough separation of flavors or one component of the dish was too salty. For $79/pp with a $21 supplement, I would've expected a bit more. Seems like the dishes could never find the balance it sought to achieve with barely any hints of striking Korean flavors I've become accustomed to. This place is trying to be low key and it under-delivers on that as well. With a price like that it's hard to justify...as infatuation said "a massive candlelit sauna."Servers were great though! Attentive, fast, and can explain each dish in great detail. Also, what's with the presentation of the pork jowl? lol

. the waitress... jay? She was so short with me when I asked for a different table. It's not that big of a deal..Service is robotic.Small place with a weird smell.Food was okay . was eating tapas where your friend picks out the items.. Don't know what the hype was about.
Be the first to ReplyNot sure what the hype is about.
I think everything was pretty mediocre aside from their Kurodai Mulhwe! Their beef tartare is unique however, I think is a one try thing and I would never crave it again. They're octopus was so salty - I gave it a second bite and had it down 2 cups of water. Their winter squash over rice was good - I liked the crispiness of whatever was inside. They're bourbon dessert was a no go. How are they going to serve that to customers that don't drink alcohol, or do not like the taste of alcohol?I would recommend going to Gish in Santa Clara if you're ever there! Cheaper price and it's way better - they change their menu every month and I've gone 6 consecutive months, and everything was delicious! Ambience is nice though! The servers were great and attentive :) I wish I wasn't so harsh on this review, but I really was not impressed - I truly feel sorry

Annoying that they never answer the phone and their cancellation policy. Not too impressed. Couldn't even eat 2 of the courses cause it was so salty. Although they mentioned some Korean ingredients I could barely taste it. Service was good but nothing too special.
Be the first to ReplyI loveeee KINN .
This is def one of my favorite restaurants in Ktown. Highly recommend trying out this restaurant. I also made an amateur review of this restaurant on my youtube channel. Check it out and show some love. Thank you! Really beautiful presentation yet delicious. I highly recommend the tasting menu here.
Be the first to ReplyKinn is like a hole in a wall kind of place.
If you blink you might miss it. However, don't be fooled by how small the restaurant is because it delivers big on flavor, presentation and service. Came across Kinn from a list of best new restaurants in Los Angeles Forbes published recently. It is tasting menu only. Menu changes periodically. $79 per person. You can add the crispy octopus for an additional $21 (as of 1/17/2023). We love sitting at the chef's counter just watching the magic happen. Plates that stood out are the kurodai mulhwe, crispy octopus and pork jowl. The smoked roes in kurodai mulhwe added such umami to the dish. So good!! The crispy octopus is probably the best octopus I have ever tasted. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water and it's worth the extra charge. The only dish that did not tickle my fancy was the winter squash. The texture of crispy quinoa was fun, but the whole thing was rather bland. Service was very attentive and food came out in a timely manner. I wouldn't be surprised if Kinn gets a Michelin star the next time they make their rounds in Los Angeles. It certainly has the potential and I hope Chef Kim keeps up the good work!

The BBQ octopus is the best preparation of this I have every had. Can't wait to dine here again. I wasn't very impressed by the wine list, might see what their corkage policy is and bring a bottle next time. The entire prix fixe was delicious, and as stated earlier, the octopus was the highlight!

Came here for as it is the new hot and popular restaurant in ktown LA. Have to say friends were right probably should come here with a not very hungry stomach as the food portion was small. Most memorable dish was probably the octopus as it was so well made and crispy. The steamed egg with veggies were also very good. Also really liked the ice cream with slush at the end a lot. The black cod was a bit salty though. Parking: - There is Valet parking at the corner for $8
Be the first to ReplyKorean fine dining in ktown was a bold move.
Koreans in LA have a high bar for Korean food because of the history of 1st gen restauranteurs. For the price paid, I can think of other spots in ktown that would've been less nice atmosphere wise but so much better food wise. I think if Kinn opened in a different town like Culver City or Silver Lake, I wouldn't judge it as harshly. As a NYC transplant, I thought their menu in December would work in NYC better than LA (ktown). If your first dish is a taco, it should be at least as good as the avg taco in LA. That said, I liked some of the dishes and appreciated their decor - I'm grateful I had a chance to dine here since it is a unique spot. It will just be a while before I come back.
Be the first to ReplyThe wait was extremely long.
They took away the regular menu and had a prefix and was happy with what they brought out but they brought out the first course 20 minutes after we sat to the couple next to us first and had to wait 10 minutes for the first course was pretty unorganized. 75$ was the cost for 5 courses or 95 if you want the extra entree. I see the concept they were going for but there was only one seating to see the experience of seeing the chef prep and present the meal.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best value tasting menus in LA.
Don't come super hungry because the plates are small, but every dish is exciting and complex. Friendly staff and food came out at a good pace despite it being busy. If the crispy octopus is on the menu as an add-on absolutely get it.

Ok I don't typically leave yelp reviews but I feel one is due here.Food 5/5 the food was phenomenal. Traditional Korean flavours with impeccable execution. What really got me was the combination of textures, ingredients and the colours and tastes of each dish that made them stand out in their own right. Service 5/5 amazing. It was a busy night and while it took a while for our food to come out, our server comped our drinks then ended up comping our entire meal. Once the last dish came, they then apologized again for the delay and comped the entire meal, inclusive of all 4 glasses of wine. I was completely in awe. My guest and I were having a good time and didn't even complain and they still took the initiative to make sure we had a good evening.I will absolutely be back and will refer this place to all my friends. Great food. Better service and a memorable experience x

I give props to Kinn because they're trying to bring fine dining into to Ktown5 Stars for service3 Stars for Food -- Presentation was subpar and no dish left a mark as there was no advanced craftsmanship to the dish. Felt like I could cook almost everything there besides the dessert and I'm by no means am I a pro. There was one exceptionally bad dish -- The Black Cod (Server called it Monkfish so could be Monkfish?), sauce tasted like it was from a premade packet. It's a new restaurant in town, so has room for much improvement. They change their menu each quarter so let's see if they can step it up next time.Servers/staff were extremely kind and attentive

Ate here a few weeks ago with some friends, trendy new restaurant I've been wanting to check out. Nice space with minimalistic decor, friendly staff. The dishes were all fine yet none too exceptional except for the octopus, probably one of the best octopus dishes I've had and well worth the extra cost. I wish they had a formal wine pairing that might help elevate the meal as well. I think it's a good start and I'm sure the menu will become more refined with time hope to come back again down the road.

So impressed with the plating of the restaurant that the food was almost ignore. Each dish was very beautifully presented and introduced. However that was all. Only the 1st dish was memorable. The others were a bit too salty or plain. One was just a confusion of flavors.

Everything was presented really well and well paced throughout. The octopus was worth the extra add. For 7 dishes overall I think you get a ton of value for what they charge. Would come back again to try their spring menu too. Great ambiance!
Be the first to ReplyCute restaurant concept, but food didn't really match
Cute restaurant concept, but food didn't really match expectations particularly at price point. Some of the course portions were minuscule, which was confusing because it wasn't as if the ingredients were costly. Seriously, the "truffle" tacos shown in pics are zoomed in and in reality the size of a thumbnail. Some disappointment with service as well; we asked for wine recommendations and went with server suggestions, but didn't like the wine at all after tasting it. The server asked how it was and I said, "it's OK but not great" and she suggested I could try something else with the next drink. I didn't have much confidence with other suggestions or options on drink list so didn't order anything else, which was a minor disappointment since we spent $25 each way to Uber from/to home and came prepared to drink more. Overall, it was good to try for ourselves but there are better dinners to be had for $270 for two.
Be the first to Replysadly, it was a very let down experience for me.
everything was very mediocre - the truffle taco was underwhelmed, the sauce was too heavy for my taste; the branzino mulweh was pretty good, although the raw piece of sweet potato was a little odd; I did mention no mustard/wasabi for me at the very beginning to the waitress, but I guess I didn't include horseradish... so when the mackerel came and it was covered underneath a bed of fresh horseradish... I only had myself to blame - the mushrooms were great though; beet kalbi was pretty interesting - I did enjoy the beet being the center instead of the beef, and they were both pretty yummy. the star had to be the crispy octopus ($20 supplement) - I finished every bite and I am glad that my piece was bigger than my friend's! in the end, I still don't understand the meaning of a pretty standard desert - a normal scoop of ice cream with some stale pig-shaped cookie on top... for the price and the amount of food, I do not think it's worth the hype, but you gotta try to really know, right? the servers probably need more training - they seem to be just repeating what the dishes are consisted of, and then quickly leave the tables... there was also no napkin or paper napkin given - in the middle of the course the waitress picked up my utensils and took my sharing plate away, then just sit my utensils down on the table...

I love a lot of things about Kinn - the warm staff, engaging chefs, classy but cozy ambiance. As a lover of Korean food I really want this restaurant to succeed, but I feel that they still have a little bit of work before the food is truly 5 stars. There were some awesome highlights, like the truffle taco starter on a beautiful super-thin crispy taco shell, and the gorgeous crispy octopus which was full of flavor and perfectly tender with a light breading to contrast. Each dish on the set menu offered unique flavors and plating that really showed impressive creative expression and innovation.I did feel like they missed the mark on a few dishes, and generally missed out on bringing punchier flavors and contrast in the way you would expect Korean food (perhaps my expectations were wrong here). For example, the Mackerel dish (which I believe they said was their signature) had some really amazing subtle flavors going with the dandelion and perfectly cooked fish -- however I couldn't help but crave more saltiness to bring out the fish flavor. There was one tiny pickle to add saltiness and I remember wishing I had 3-4 more.Another case was the spinach ssambap, which again suffered from lack of punchier seasoning or salt to enhance the rest of the flavors -- which would've been fine if the kimchi radish were saltier. Unfortunately the kimchi radish was all pepper and no salt, which felt very unsatisfying. In the end, I still am happy to give the overall 5 stars as Kinn is a place I want to support and see grow, but I think there still needs to be refinement of several dishes and better balancing of flavors and seasoning. I'm confident they'll improve and am excited to come back in a few months to try the set again!
