Karma Modern Indian Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Started at bar with Edward and Emilio.
Fantastic service from both and they made us feel so welcomed at the bar that we didn't take our reserved seats at the counter. Edward mentioned a Silk Route. Pineapple drink with tequila, turmeric, and basil. Yum! I forced myself to try another drink because that one was so good. My cousin had a French 95 which she enjoyed very much. We shared the Kerala fish curry. Very flavorful and great for dipping garlic naan. We also shared charred broccolini. Can't go wrong. The tamarind chutney potatoes spheres were little, delicious works of art. Soft on inside. Full of flavors. Other drinks we enjoyed were a spicy margarita (happy hour special) and the French 75.

I'll start with the service which was top notch, superior attention to detail. The was food really good! While one cook grinds the spices and the your nose starts catching flares the other starts the lamb meat in the grill and then move it to the spear that will hold your seekh kebabs in the tandoori oven. One more cook starts rolling the mushroom dough and placing it into the pillow to stick it to the oven walls. The branzino and the duck very well prepared spiced and interesting! Well recommended!

From the moment we walked in with a toddler we knew this was a special place. We were greeted warmly and given a great table in the window. Edward our server was fantastic and so patient and helpful with helping us negotiate the menu. The food was all delicious. The cocktails were special and delicious. And when we ordered a second cocktail and said we'd split it, they split it at the bar. Nice touch. The staff was very attentive but not intrusive. The place is gorgeous. I'd be back soon if we didn't live in Philadelphia.
Service was great, food was delicious.
45 minutes and $30 for a great lunch. Limited options on the lunch menu but very flavorful.

Overall, I think the restaurant was a bit over priced and overrated. The butter chicken was sweet, and honestly quite mediocre. The service was incredibly disappointing. The server messed up our naan order, fixing the order took so long that we had finished our food by the time the naan arrived. When asked to reduce the number of naan's, given that we had finished our food, the serve made it seem like a big deal. Ambiance is nice, but the food was lackluster and service was underwhelming. Would recommend Rasika over Karma any day.
Great food, great service.
Their Lachcha Paratha and Dal Makhani were superb. the pricing is on a higher side, but it's worth it

This restaurant is simply magnificent! The Indian cuisine is spot on. I hope highly recommended the Chicken Chettinab as well as any naan. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. A must!

Went here for my fiancé's birthday dinner after getting an email about a new tasting menu. We had already been here multiple times and love it--he is an Indian immigrant and was extremely excited about the food we received, especially one of the courses that we have yet to be able to find in this country. For starters, they had set the table up with a birthday card and happy birthday sign, which was very cute. The bartender, Edward, was also lovely and highlighted a new drink, the silk route--tequila, pineapple, basil, and turmeric, which happens to be our favorite. We also had several other cocktails throughout the meal, that were timed very well with the food. There were a lot of coastal states highlighted during this 6 course meal, which we were delighted about because of the uniquely flavored seafood. I have seen some other reviews stating that the portions were small, but I would say they were reasonable--if your plate is piled high with creamy sauces or dishes like mattar paneer, you'll get stuffed very quickly and not be able to try anything else. I was happy to leave satisfied without needing to lie down from being uncomfortably full. Two touches to the experience were really nice: firstly, we got shown a topographical map of India to show where what we were eating was from, and having the topographical picture really explained why dishes and ingredients were chosen (and thank you to our server Maritza for being so attentive). Secondly, the chef came out at the end and we got to meet him, while my fiancé got a candle to blow out on his dessert plate. Finally, to highlight one of the dessert courses itself--I had never seen or eaten the betelnut itself. It is hard enough to find fresh paan leaves in the US, so this was a wonderful surprise! My fiancé (from Maharashtra) said that it tasted just like being home. Thank you for a wonderful birthday experience!
Dined for my husband's birthday on March 31st.
I spent nearly $600 on what I thought would be an experience for all but it fell woefully short. No one greet us at the door. We had to stop someone to ask about our reservation. We arrived 15 min early and were seated 10 minutes late. The bartender was nicest person we met but never asked us if we wanted drinks while we waited (which we did!). When we were sat we were only given 2 menus for 5 people. I had to go back to host to ask for more. We were told they would Look to see if more were available. What?? They don't have menus for everyone? At least they could have said we will bring you a few more in a minute and thank you for your patience. I think our server was in the weeds because I think a manager took our order? We had multiple people at different point but no one introduced themselves. The manager did explain menu but went fast and I had trouble hearing her. We had one person who is heat-adverse so we asked which dishes were mild. When the food came the "mild" dishes were the most spicy and those marked on the menu with a chili were the least spicy. So was this a cooking problem?? Why was the spice not what was described. Some of the food was wonderful but it was uneven. For example, I had the duck. The presentation looked like a garden. The duck was beautifully cooked but overpowered by the sauce. The sauce was good though but the duck was a vehicle for sauce. The broccoli rice that took up half the plate was awful. Literally steamed, riced broccoli with absolutely no seasoning including salt. It was bland and not good. We had to flag someone down to get a second round of drinks. When delivered they brought the wrong drink. At other fine dining restaurants when a mistake like that that happens they usually tell you to keep the wrong drink and bring you the right one and do not charge you for the mistake since they cannot serve it to anyone else anyway. In this case my husband said why don't you leave that one and bring the right one. They charged us for both drinks. We did drink the drink so its not wrong that they charged us but that is not how I am used to fine dining establishments handling mistakes. Our server never even apologized for this mistake. I am not sure if this was just a bad service for the restaurant or if it is in decline but based on reputation and what I spent I expected much, much more from this restaurant!!! Spend elsewhere in my opinion!!

After reading reviews, I decided on Karma over Rasika on my DC trip. I think Karma is an overpriced & overrated Indian spot with decent service, tasty select items and elegant ambiance. We really liked their Cocktails, Dal Makhni, Breads and Chicken tikka the most. Rest items like Butter chicken were average. Appetizers like Tamarind potato spheres, Paneer pesto were underwhelming. They are presented creatively but quite meagre for sharing. Get this - They basically serve 2 small dahi puris for $11 and call it Tamarind Potato Spheres- frankly it's a joke! Paneer Pesto- Again just 2 pieces of paneer coated in basil pesto for $12! Daal halwa for dessert wasn't bad, not quite outstanding. My advice is to stick with main course only. Good luck.

Hi @ExhaustiveMilk80, to be able to hold a bid you must have either the key holder medal or concierge medal. Holding bids allows you to work on trying to secure the reservation without someone else getting it before you and filling it
