Kantjil & De Tijger Amsterdam Reviews from The Last Year
Love Ristaffel!
Wonderful Indonesian restaurant, conveniently located in Centrum, Amsterdam. The rijstaffel is not to be missed. Reservations a must--it gets really busy with locals as well as tourists.
Stay away
Did not feel welcome here. We were rushed in and out in no time. Food quality, service and presentation went from an 8 five years ago to a 3 now. On top they charged us for tap water, disguised as bottled water and charged for items we ordered but we're not served. After complaining, staff was embarrassed and quickly paid the difference back in cash. Very sad to see a once great restaurant go down like this
I do not recommend this restaurant at all! There are much
I do not recommend this restaurant at all! There are much better Indonesian restaurants out there in Amsterdam. Please don't go here. This restaurant has many flaws. First, they are way over priced for what you are getting. Portion is very very small. Too pricey with very small portion of food. For example, cassava crackers cost 5.50 euros and there were only 10 pieces of crackers. Another example, their sayur lodeh costs 9.50 euros and comes in a very small bowl with mostly cabbages. It didn't even taste like sayur lodeh. That's just insane and robbery. Second, the quality of food is very average. I have an Indonesian palate and I know what excellent Indonesian food should taste like. This restaurant is far from being good. Definitely not authentic Indonesian. I alluded to the example of sayur lodeh previously. The taste was just horrible. Third, the service was very sub-par. It took a long time for food and the check to come. Overall, I do not recommend this restaurant. Not worth it. You will get disappointed after you dinner. Guaranteed.
Total lack of notion of what the word SERVICE means.
More than terrible, it is totally a restaurant without a minimum notion of what service means. (Only one boy, really young, which unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to ask his name, but came to the table to take our order, he was amazing, he is using braces. If you read this, please go teach your managers what service means). It was our first time experience in an Indonesian restaurant. We ordered a couple of things for a start. 5, not much I would say. We would order more, eventually. From 8pm until almost 9pm, only one soup, 5 chicken kind of nuggets, and a small bowl of rice (simple rice) came. When we finished eating the soup and after getting out of the table already 2 times to ask if something else was coming, we realised that the already cold bowl of rice is supposed to put inside of the soup we ate 20 minutes ago… NOTHING at all was told… they just come, put the dishes in the table, and go away. Are we, as a first time experiencing Indonesian food, supposed to know by ourselves that we should put the rice inside of the soup??? I mean… NO SERVICE AT ALL. Terrible terrible terrible. Not to talk about the manager tonight. Always without a smile in the face, walking around the restaurant as if he is a king or the owner of the place, only going to receive the money from the clients, while this boys are running like chickens around with a full restaurant. How can there exist service??? I would like to give an advice to the higher management of this place. If you don’t know what service is, first don’t open a restaurant, and second, if you don’t have enough people/organisation, don’t have 30 tables, make it half. A restaurant is not supposed to be used only for make it full and for receiving money. It should be used to see the smile on the faces of all the people that are filling in your chairs while they enjoy the food you prepared. This is service from the heart. Have a look on what Omotenashi means, a Japanese word and definition… maybe you will have a better notion of service, Specially if you are an Asian restaurant in Europe and not a lot of people have tried Indonesian food. Everyone, please be careful… If you are having a first time experience with Indonesian, you should definitely go somewhere else. We ended up at dam with some Italian pizza.
Service was crap.
Waited 50 minutes for rice and noodle. Was cold and no flavor. Go anywhere else!!!
Service was great.
The food was delicious. They were good about making reservations over email and accommodating a last minute reservation for 9. Everyone was great. The recommendations were superb. All the things we ate were really good. I would definitely eat here again and recommend anyone going to Ams to check it out too.
If you like cold canteen food this place is perfect for you!
Amsterdam was heaving over Christmas so I feel some places are just catering to tourist...mass quantity food, at maximum price, minimum quality, as you'll never see them (the tourist) again. The food was pricey and the quality was disgusting. I know for a fact the food was mass produced way before and served from canteen style containers. It all came out in about 5 minutes and was lukewarm. Reading past reviews it seems like it used to be a good place but has lost its integrity and has got lazy / greedy.
Bad
Sauce was desesperatly missing Really dry and not good We were not advised correctly and the result bad
Cosy atmosphere, good food and big portions at a great price
While in Amsterdam, you have to try some rijstaffel - it's just a thing you have to do. Unfortunately for this visit I was there solo and it can be hard to find a place that caters to rijstaffel for solo adventurers. This place was recommended by hotel and it did not disappoint. Located at the edge of the city centre, it is easy to reach and find. They always keep a percentage of their tables open to walk ins which was great as I had not booked! I was immediately seated in a cosy nook, the lighting was dim and it gave slightly pub vibes which was exactly what I was in the mood for. The menu is fairly simple, a nice selection of starters and then a choice of rijstaffel. I went with the Kantjil sedap to start, this was like a mini indonesian tapas selection of bites. A nice variety, lightly spiced served with a choice of dipping sauces - see photo. Presentation was a bit lacking but that isn't why I was there ;) For the main I had the Nasi Rames, a combo of rice meat and veg dishes. It arrived in front of me and I was delighted - a seriously heaped dish of food, I don't remember all the names, but there was rendang, a beef stew, cucumber salad, stir fried veg, delicious crackers, satay (of course) and a portion of serundeng which I had never had before and noted the name. The serundeng is spiced, grated and cooked coconut which you can use to add flavour and texture to each of your bites of food. Heavenly. The starter was 15 which for what I got was a little bit steep, however the main was 20 and is a great value meal. If I am in the city centre again and need filling up on tasty food at a reasonable price, I will be back!
Slow service, lackluster food
If you want to wait 1.5 hours for overpriced bowl of boiled cabbage, white rice and two Buttcheeks of chicken on a stick, this is the place for you.
very friendly and super quick.
good quality dishes and the Rendang was the fave. A fun stop full of locals who know the real Indonesian flavors. The service was courteous and quick. The house cocktails were tasty and we made another quick stop for some takeaway a day later. Should be on your Amsterdam list of places to eat.
