Lackluster
We booked dinner here 3 months in advance via email from Australia. The email exchange was unusually bland and quite impersonal. We arrived on time for our 6.15pm dinner slot , and were seated at our table. Drinks service was very slow. We ordered our selection of starters and mains. My wife selected the John Dory, and I the (local) lamb. I took two bites of my lamb, and couldn’t swallow either mouthful! I haven’t sent a meal back to a kitchen for as long as I can remember, but this was far too chewy and indigestible. How could a New Zealander (worlds best lamb) in the kitchen serve such a dish? That said, my meal was swiftly replaced with the fish dish. The fish was well prepared and presented, but was swimming in too much aioli for my taste. Having dined at many of the world top 50 San Pellegrino restaurants, we are sorry to say that Kai’s Michelin star seemed irrelevant to us. We left fed, but disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyBusiness relies on a positive customer experience. This was far from that, dreadful attitude by the owner.
I have eaten in restaurants all over the world. This experience was by far the worst, dreadful condescending attitude.

This is a lovely restaurant food was very good we really enjoyed it but for one small incident when we finished our main course the waitress spilled the wine & water over my friend by accident she was a very nice waitress & accidents happen so they mopped up my friend & what I was surprised at was that they didn’t give us a glass of wine to compensate for loss of wine our wine cost 50 euro & it was red wine that was my only complaint the young staff were lovely & very good at their job
Be the first to ReplyFamous fish fingers
Kai in Galway truly exceeded my expectations with their fish fingers. Perfectly crispy on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside – they were simply exceptional. The cozy ambiance and friendly service added to the delightful Lunch experience. While I wished for a slightly larger portion size, the quality more than made up for it. Without a doubt, Kai is a top choice for anyone craving delicious Lunch in Galway. Five stars all the way!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food in long established Galway restaurant with New Zealand connections
A range of great local fish and meat and vegetables cooked with a twist of spices. A very popular small and intimate restaurant so always heavily booked. The chef has New Zealand heritage and reflects such in her cooking but using local Irish products. A great fusion. I also liked the loo which had a soap stick for hand washing! Keep up the good work and high standards. The tables are close together so be careful if discussing gossip that your fellow diners may overhear as Galway is a small town really !

Absolutely the best meal my wife and I have ever had! This was our second visit, and it was great both times. For this meal, my wife had the strip steak and I had the Lamb. Everything on the plate was delicious. Our starter was the Coppa ham, also very tasty. The wine and spirits list is very good as well, with an excellent variety of options. Servers were very good and prompt, and the atmosphere is lovely. While the food is certainly fine dining, the mood is pretty low key and relaxed. Well worth the money!
Be the first to ReplyA good restaurant in Galway
Without being cheap, the dishes are made with quality products and have enough quantity to dine with a single dish. The wine and beer list is short but interesting. The atmosphere of middle-aged people wanting to enjoy good food.
Be the first to ReplyReally terrific experience
Everything you would want from a Michelin starred restaurant. There is a very bohemian, family feel to the interior design. The energy is very low-key, and this is a real strength given the buzz of its location in Galway. Staff is congenial and intuitive. The menu has really diverse offerings without being precious and fussy. It's very vegetable forward, and with good cause, so all of the other proteins were prepared beautifully. You will have a very memorable meal here.

I have coeliac disease so require a gluten free diet, I also have another serious food allergy, I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Kai. Great atmosphere in a lovely setting, staff took care to ensure my food was safe, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious.
Be the first to ReplyAppalling Service and Response to a Very Serious Food Allergy Issue
I ate in Kai last night with four friends. It was a truly terrible experience from start to finish which ended in me having an allergic reaction due to the carelessness, arrogance and complete lack of awareness or training of the staff. I have a serious food allergy to eggs and peanuts. I informed the waitress of this before I ordered as I always do. She then presented me with a menu with the items scratched off that I could not eat. I ordered a starter and a main which had no eggs or peanuts. Four of us at the table ordered Monkfish with cauliflower purée for our main dish. The waitress had clarified that this dish did not contain eggs. When this dish came out we all agreed that the Monkfish had so much salt in it it was inedible. We told the waitress this and she replaced the monkfish. When this second monkfish (which had no less salt) came out it was resting on a white sauce which we incorrectly assumed was the cauliflower purée it had originally been served with. However, the monkfish had instead been placed on a aioli that contained eggs. I ate the monkfish as the staff had not made us aware of this change to the dish and proceeded to be violently sick immediately. The staff informed us that the replacement fish had been given to us with the aioli. Mistakes happen on the restaurant industry and while it can be extremely frustrating, the manner in which this issue was dealt with by our waitress was appalling. She proceeded to place the blame on me as I had not informed the restaurant about the allergy prior to my arrival (this is not required by allergen law and I had not made the booking). I had made the situation clear before I ordered. She was rude, confrontational and unprofessional about a very serious issue that required a comprehensive response. I later spoke to a manager who unreservedly apologised about the incident and took responsibility. This however came far too late. The whole incident ruined our evening out as I had to return home immediately after due to how ill I was. Outside of this horrendous experience the food was extremely poor across the board. An absolutely awful experience.

We had the Kai Fish Fingers & the Lamb dish. The fish was slightly overcooked but both dishes were very good. There was a great depth to each of the dishes with little bursts of flavor throughout due to the variety of ingredients and sauces. We finished with a chocolate cake and coffees. The cake was very rich and tasty. The coffee was a little bitter for my taste but that's purely personal preference, my partner said it was great. Overall its was a lovely experience and I've always enjoyed eating there. Its a little pricy and it was a tad cold in the room but the staff were very friendly and informative and there was a nice atmosphere. I look forward to returning.

Food was amazing. Apps, mains, deserts, drinks and even coffee were top notch. Nice portion size for the the level of food offered. I love it when a meal is top notch but enough to leave full and a smile on your face. Service was very good. One of the best meal had in several years.
Be the first to ReplyHuge disappointment
First visit to Kai, came on high recommendation so I decided to bring my mother for her birthday. I went for the vegetarian main course option, totally underwhelmed, it was inedible and the few bites I did have were dense and nauseating. To add insult to injury, there was no comment or acknowledgment from the waitress when she came to clear the indigestible log. By far the worse meal I’ve had, I am unimpressed by the service and the staffs pure disregard for customer satisfaction.
Be the first to ReplyVery good
We had a very good experience in this restaurant. No issues with our reservation and easy to book a table. The restaurant itself has a quirky almost cave like feel (maybe cave isn’t the right word to describe it, but it definitely has an almost underground rustic vibe, it’s hard to describe)… maybe like having dinner in a restaurant in a hobbit shire house ? The atmosphere was cool and definitely different from other restaurants. The mixed drinks were really tasty. Loved my soup starter, my entree was pretty good but I wasn’t obsessed with it. My issue was for the menu that night it was kind of fish heavy and the few other meat options didn’t really jump out at me the way I wanted them to and the entree selection that night was a bit limited. Dessert was pretty good. We had a good experience here and would definitely return for another dining experience.

We came by this wonderful little restaurant in the Heart of Galway. Busy, busy but worth the wait. Pleasant staff, wonderful food. Earthy, tasty, made with care. Definitely going back soon. The fish fingers are not your Birds Eye ones for sure. No loud music or loud conversations, nice and mellow.
Be the first to ReplyBest lunch in Galway, ever changing menu!
This is the best lunch spot in Galway City! Consistently delicious with a different menu everytime I've gone. Food is a little on the pricy side for lunch but worth every penny. Honestly can't recommend it enough.

A truly lovely meal full of really interesting tastes and combinations. The restaurant is small and intimate, but has been thoughtfully constructed and planned. The food is creative and exceptional, including the drinks. We had one of the most interesting gin and tonics I've ever had-- rose and elderflower with tayberries. The crab starter included kohlrabi, which isn't my favorite vegetable, but it was wonderful. My meal had an amazing roast cauliflower. All in all, if you can this is definitely a place to go!

Jess serves up the most magnificent fresh, local produce and can make anything taste delicious. Michelin star experience without the pomp or the price tag. It never disappoints. Book it now you won't regret it!

Called in for lunch whilst visiting Galway City on an extremely wet day. Warm and welcoming, the food was wholesome and delicious and the whole experience was just perfect.
Be the first to ReplyInventive, beautiful food
I had some delicious fish fingers with a carrot and greens slaw salad. It was so pretty with nasturtiums and pansies on it. A small place with excellent food
Be the first to ReplyNot great value for money
The service and was good, friendly and polite. The starter was amazing, we had a peach and courgette flower. For mains we both ordered the steak, as i dont eat lamb and didnt fancy fish, so that was the only other option. the meat was cooked appropriately but it didnt mealt in your mouth and we have had nicer steaks. while the sauce and onions were very nice the meat was very disappointing. For weren't drawn to any of the desert options but went with the pavlova as it was recommended to us. It was okay, but the lemon curd made it a but too sweet. Over all we felt that it feel a little bit short from what we were expecting considering the cost.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely Shocking and Extremely Upsetting!
After 3 years keeping my family apart due to Covid my son and daughter and myself traveled to Ireland from the US, Germany and England to meet up and have a special holiday. We choose Kai for a special Michelin Dinner, one that we were quite excited for. However we were given only 1 option a 6:30pm time on May 20th. When we arrived we were greeted quite abruptly with attitude and told there was a time slot for us up to 9pm which was fine. We ordered a variety of appetizers and mains as well as 2 bottles of lovely wine. But suddenly a elderly man next to us had a serious health incident which was quite upsetting for his family as well as ourselves. The staff made no attempt to assist, it was down to the daughter to contact the ambulance service. In the meanwhile I was trapped at the table having to experience the shock of this man on the ground right next to me and worrying for him. My daughter and son were able to free themselves from the table but I was not and no attention was given to how upsetting that was for me to have to see and hear all that was going on! My daughter asked the male waiter if possible to get me a drink, as she could see I was clearly quite upset. He brought it to me and never did he ask if I was ok?!!! What took up quite a bit of time before the ambulance arrived and took care to get the man in the ambulance was then met with our waiter advising us that our table was almost up! We had just been put through a traumatic experience and all he was concerned about was the table and the next seatings! We asked if we could have a coffee and a desert and he replied I think we have closed the orders , but let me check! I was completely taken back at how rude he was and insensitive to what we / I had just experienced. Having had a father in law die of a heart attack right in front of me this was as close a memory to that and it would have been far better to have shown some concern then wanting the table. And then to pay the very expensive bill that I did I noted he even charged me for the drink! Shocking ! The food was lovely but the rudeness and the experience tainted the meal in total! I have been to many Michelin Star Restaurants and this by far was the worst with staff very abrupt and hardly you would expect from front facing hospitality staff! So be warned it may not live up to your expectations!

Great experience from the outset. Lovely ambience and friendly front of house staff. Each meal was so flavorsome. The food combinations were delicious. We had a vegan with us who was accommodated for without issue. The cocktails were delightful too.

My wife and I had a superb meal here on a busy Friday night in April. Service was A one. Food over the moon. This was the best meal we've had in a very long time. Each course was better than the prior one. We had steak and the flavor was out of this world. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. They wouldn't tell us the secret ingredients. A very relaxed atmosphere for a Michelin rated restaurant. Did not feel rushed. Would go back in a second if we ever get back to Galway!

Having received a gift voucher, my husband and I decided to have lunch at Kai today. The restaurant was very busy, lots of lively chat. The girl at reception was extremely nice and managed to get us a table with very short notice. The staff are very efficient and so friendly. While the place is small there is a very happy atmosphere and this is infectious. The food, well what can I say?.. the Hake fingers are to die for and my husband loved the trout. Will be recommending to friends and family. Well done to a great team.
